Growing in God
Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
Most of the foul play we wreak on one another
takes place when it’s dark outside. No doubt, we
can lie, cheat, rob and murder in the daytime.
But that raises the odds on our being caught. In
Jesus’ world, lit at night only by candles, the
darkness must have been nearly palpable. It
meant a lot for Jesus’ contemporaries when He
compared sin to the darkness of the night.
When Judas left the Last Supper “it was night.”
Like someone who runs from a searchlight, we
sinners often flee God. Not in a noticeable way,
of course. We may even come to Mass ready to
respond to the prayers and go through all the
motions. But deep down we know we’re being
hypocritical. Something haunts us deep inside.
None of our smiles can fool an all-seeing God.
There is a sacrament that offers a cure, and the
chance for a whole new life – Reconciliation,
also known as Confession. “Reconciliation”
underscores the beautiful reunion of ourselves
with a loving and forgiving God. He takes us by
the hand and walks us gently out from under the
shadows of the night into the light of Easter.
The confession element of the sacramental
experience is the hardest part for most people.
We have grown accustomed to think with the
world of relativism, which holds that there are no
objective standards by which to measure
behavior. Whatever you think is good is good.
Whatever you take to be bad is bad. Forget the
Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the
Mount. Be your own judge and jury, and keep
the Church out of it.
What is so ironic in that attitude is that the
Founder of the Church told His first apostles
“Whose sins you forgive are forgiven; whose
sins you retain are retained.” Obviously Jesus
believed in objective standards to measure
behavior. Proponents of moral relativism rob
people of the incomparable peace that comes
after one makes a good confession.
Perhaps the greatest mystery story of all is why
a person would ever deny their sins and then
never experience that peace. Its source is a
smiling Christ who would rather die than lose
them to darkness.
Pastor Retires
Monsignor Dubell recently received a letter from
Bishop O’Connell stating that, because he had
reached the age of seventy-five, he must retire
as pastor this coming June 30th. Monsignor will
reside in his personal residence in Burlington
Township, and he will celebrate Mass and the
Sacraments wherever he is needed. This year
Monsignor Dubell is celebrating fifty years as a
priest. He will reflect on his life as a priest at a
later time. Stay tuned.

all parishioners on Friday, March 20 at 6:00 p.m.
in the Emmaus Center. Bring your appetite for
soup, bread, and refreshments. Stations of the
Cross follow at 7:30 p.m. in the Church.
Easter Egg Hunt – March 28th
St. Mary of the Lakes Knights of Columbus
Council 6520 is hosting a free Easter Egg Hunt
for children ages 8 years old and younger on
Sat., March 28 in the Parish Meeting Room
(next to the gymnasium) at the school. Doors
open at 9:30 a.m. The Easter Egg Hunt starts at
10:00 a.m. If it rains, the hunt will be held inside.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is in need of
food and special items for their Easter Gifting
Program.
Please drop off the items by
Sunday, March 22.
Needed items include: Canned vegetables,
sweet potatoes, fruit cocktails, jelly beans,
chocolate bunnies, Easter basket grass, Easter
egg coloring kits, Peeps, assorted Easter candy,
and small stuffed animals (Beanie Baby size).
Donations can be put in the containers in the
church or delivered to the Msgr. James H.
Dubell Caring Center on Jones Road.
As you donate, know that you are a sign of
God’s love to those who are suffering and you
give them Easter hope and joy. Thank you for
your support.

Altar Server Meeting
The Daughters of St. Thérèse
Monday, March 16th at 7:00 pm there will be a
meeting of the Daughters. As the first flowers
break through snow dusted flower beds, with
hope, we wait for fresh buds of spirit to sprout
in our winter worn hearts. All women and girls
of the parish are welcome to join in our prayers
before the Eucharist. Our intercessory prayers
will culminate in Benediction. A brief meeting
will follow.
Any young person who is in 4th grade or higher
is invited to attend training. All current altar
servers are requested to also be present in
order to learn of changes being made, as well
as to be refreshed on the proper way to serve at
Mass. We request that parents also attend for
the first portion as it is a commitment being
made by the family as well as the altar
server. This meeting will take place Friday,
March 20 at 6pm in the Church.

Prize Winners: Amanda McNally was
awareded second place in our Diocesan Right
to Life Poster contest. Lexie Croge, Megan
Panter, Mary Lambrechts, and Riley Phipps won
third place.
The JV Boys Basketball Team won the
Championship game in our leage and placed 2nd
in the Diocesan Tournament.
The Girls Varsity Basketball Team took
second place in the League Championship
game and the Diocecan Tournament.

Icons – More than a Picture
Monday, March 23 at 7:00PM or

in the Emmaus Center
Have you ever looked at an icon and wondered
why some of the features looked distorted or
pronounced, or what the symbols mean? An
Icon is more than a picture, Each one is a story.
They are one more way God is reaching out to
us, wanting to remind us of His great love for us.
Lent gives us an opportunity to reflect on God's
love and remember His selfless life given to
restore and renew us, and bring us to the joy of
the Resurrection. In Him, we can find, our lives
renewed and filled with His gifts of love, joy and
peace even in the midst of darkness.
On Monday, March 23 at 7:00PM and again on
Wednesday, March 25 at 10:15AM we will have
an opportunity to learn how God reveals Himself
to us through icons. Nadine Haines will share
with us how to read Icons and present two –
Mary Magdalene and Extreme Humility. Nadine
has studied with master Iconographer and
founder of the Prospon School of Iconology,
Vladislav Andrejev.
As our Lenten journey towards joy begins to rev
up, bring a friend and learn what is being
revealed in the symbolic language of Icons.
Casseroles for Camden
We are once again accepting frozen casseroles
for Francis House, an AIDS-HIV Resource
Center in Camden. Frozen casseroles can be
dropped off in the parish office during regular
business hours. Service hours will be given to
those students who provide home- made food
only. Students can record up to 3 hours of
service per month. For more information

Challenge yourself this year to go beyond
giving up something. Take stock of your
spiritual life and grow in it.
Is there a habit or sin in your life that
repeatedly gets in the way of loving God
or your neighbor? How can you address
that habit over the next 40 days?
Is there anyone in your life from whom
you need to ask forgiveness or pursue
reconciliation?
God so loved the world that He gave His only
Son, so everyone who believes in Him might
have eternal life. – John 3:16
What practical steps can you take to
carve out time for daily prayer and
contemplation?
Use what you give up as an opportunity
to draw closer to God.
A Lenten Idea for Children and the Whole Famiy
This Lent, decorate a “Jesus Tree” and take your family on a journey through the Gospels – The Jesus
Tree is a Lenten Bible study of 'the life and teachings of Jesus from His Presentation in the Temple to His
death and Resurrection. On a poster board draw the trunk and branches of a tree. You can also do this
with felt. Don’t add leaves. Cut leaves out of green paper (felt) and set them aside.
Throughout lent read a Bible story with your family about an event or teaching during Jesus' life. After each
story glue a leaf on one of the branches. You can follow the daily readings
http://www.usccb.org/nab/index.shtml or set up your own schedule.
The Jesus Tree is a great way to reflect on the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus with your children.
Just as the barren branch blossoms through Jesus' life, we also grow from the emptiness of Lent to the
new life of Easter.
