A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY
READINGS HIS WORD TODAY
by Rev. William J. Reilly
The Baptism of the Lord -January 11, 2015
“Thus says the Lord! Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I
have put my spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice
heard in the street… you know what happened… after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of
Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good…”
Reading the Old Testament prophet and listening to the exciting sermon of Peter, we focus on the person of Jesus
Christ. Whether we place ourselves on the bank of the Jordan and listen intently as part of Peter’s audience, we are
able to recount the events in detail.
Maybe today we can use the scripture words and ask who mirrors them for us. Pope Francis, or his recently proclaimed saint predecessors come to mind. A local priest, or outstanding lay person might well reflect the words as
they go about doing good. We cannot stop looking at others.
Turn the mirror to yourself and admit that you have been chosen, anointed and sent to do good. As we begin a new
year, it is the right time to stop and ask to live the spirit of our baptism. There is a lot of room for doing good.
Can you help...
The Advisory Board of Catholic Charities
of Northern Fairfield County is seeking a
representative from Sacred Heart Church to join
the Board. Catholic Charities has served people
of all faiths in the greater Danbury area since
1939. Services provided at little or no cost
include behavioral health counseling, family
preservation and parent education programs,
Morning Glory breakfast program, adoption, a
family loan program and homeless outreach.
The board actively supports Catholic Charities
through its annual fundraisers– the Celebrity
Breakfast and the Spring Gala. Please contact

March for Life -Some exciting news is
happening with March for Life transportation!
We have been approached by an independent service
called Rally Bus, that will assist with bus transportation for those who would like to attend the March for
Life 2015 event. It is a service that provides a way
to self-organize and create trips to the March for
Life! Simply visit the site, select a stop near you, and
reserve your seat on the bus. Spread the link to other
supporters in your area, and once you have enough
reservations made, you’re on your way to DC! If you
don’t see a stop near you, add one and you can even
set the location of where it picks up. Payment is
made directly to Rally Bus.
Buses are for ADULTS ONLY.
For questions contact the Respect Life Ministry at

FAITH AND YOUR FAMILY – Baptism of the
Lord
The day of our baptism is the day we become a Child
of God – truly an occasion worth celebrating more
than just once! Mark the baptism of each member of
your family in a special way each year (if you don’t
remember the exact date, contact the parish of
baptism). Light their baptismal candle; make them a
special meal or dessert; go to Mass (even better,
schedule the Mass intention for them); start a novena
(perhaps to their patron saint); pray the rosary as a
family; write cards or letters to them, encouraging
them in their Christian life.
Most importantly, talk about what it means to be a
Child of God and how we are called to live our lives
as disciples of Jesus Christ.
