Solution Brief Integrated SDN-Enabled Packet-Optical Solution: BTI & Juniper Networks Jointly Validated Interoperability and Unified Provisioning, Control and Management Overview opportunity. Tying together diverse network elements can be operationally complex consuming valuable time and money. Provisioning and troubleshooting services across layers, vendors, and technologies can be labor-intensive and error-prone creating frustration for end customers. BTI Systems and Juniper Networks have teamed up to deliver a tightly integrated packet-optical networking solution that accelerates service deployments, simplifies operations, and improves economics. By combining best-of-breed platforms, the solution ensures seamless interoperability while providing unified management across a common SDN architecture. This solution brief reviews the capabilities and benefits of the integrated solution. Unified Solution Accelerates Deployment and Simplifies Operations BTI Systems has collaborated with Juniper Networks to deliver a fully integrated packet-optical solution that eliminates deployment barriers and simplifies ongoing operations. The versatile solution helps providers accelerate service deployments by simplifying provisioning and streamlining network deployment and capacity expansion efforts. The joint solution minimizes operational expenses by unifying provisioning and management across BTI and Juniper platforms. It also fosters programmability and simplifies OSS and BSS integration by exploiting a common software-defined networking (SDN) architecture. The unified solution is ideal for Juniper Networks customers who are implementing dynamic 10G or 100G metro optical networks to expand capacity, address new markets, or support new services. Challenges: Multivendor Management & Service Agility Barriers Service Providers and Cloud Providers are continuously expanding packet-optical networks to boost capacity and support new business initiatives. Multivendor interoperability and management issues can lead to project delays, added operational complexity, and performance issues, which can delay revenues from new services. Conventional packet-optical networks are typically based on separate layers of discrete routing and optical networking equipment that are independently managed and offer limited programmability and optimization 3rd Party SDN Applications OSS/BSS BTI Applications BTI proNX Dashboard BTI proNX Service Manager REST/SNMP Juniper Management BTI proNX Control Software SDN Controllers IP/MPLSView REST NorthStar Controller Junos Space REST BTI proNX Other SDN Controller Unified Packet-Optical Management for Juniper and BTI SNMP /NETCONF Junos Junos LER ICC Juniper MX BTI 7800 ICC LSR BTI 7800 Juniper PTX 10G/100G Figure 1: Integrated BTI and Juniper Networks Solution Features Unified Management and a Common SDN Architecture Key elements of the integrated solution include: • A unified optical layer comprised of BTI 7800/7000 Series Packet Optical Transport systems, BTI 800/700 Series Carrier Ethernet platforms, Juniper Networks PTX Series Packet Transport Routers, and Juniper Networks MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers with 10G or 100G optical interfaces (grey and colored interfaces). BTI Systems and Juniper Networks have jointly verified seamless interoperability across the photonic, IP and Ethernet layers. • Common provisioning and management with BTI proNX Control Software. The software monitors and controls BTI and Juniper Networks elements to enable a common adaptive optical layer tightly integrated with IP services. It eliminates swivel-chair management, providing a single view and a common administrative user experience for BTI and Juniper Networks devices. • Comprehensive inventory, topology, configuration, fault, and performance management across BTI and Juniper Networks elements through BTI proNX Control Software and associated applications. BTI proNX supports end-to-end optical-layer provisioning (enable/configure channels, wavelengths, etc.) and services (MEF 2.0) across a multivendor environment. And it provides unified administration (network backup/restore, upgrade, security monitoring, reporting, etc.) for both BTI and Juniper Networks devices. • Abstract northbound REST APIs via BTI proNX for integration with Juniper’s NorthStar SDN Controller or other standards-based SDN controllers such as OpenDaylight. The REST APIs enable straightforward integration with emerging SDN/NFV management architectures and simplify integration with external BSS and OSS applications, including Juniper Networks’ WANDL traffic management solution. Deliver more competitive and profitable services >> Seamless interoperability minimizes qualification and training efforts to accelerate time-to-market >> Unified management simplifies administration, reduces operating expenses, increases services agility, and improves customer satisfaction >> End-to-end optical provisioning increases staff productivity and streamlines customer turn-up using less trained staff leveraging intuitive tools and processes >> REST APIs and SDN architecture simplify OSS and BSS integration and unleash innovation Boost Margins and Service Agility with BTI and Juniper Networks Extend your Juniper Networks deployment to enable new services or reach new markets. Eliminate multivendor interoperability challenges and management hassles with a unified SDN-enabled packet-optical network. BTI Systems’ and Juniper Networks’ integrated solution can help accelerate time-to-market and reduce OPEX to deliver more competitive and profitable services.
