Advances in Breast Care at Nuffield Health
When breast cancer is suspected, women find
waiting the most difficult thing. Women presenting
with a breast symptom or concern can be seen
at Nuffield Health Tunbridge Wells Hospital
within a couple of days and sometimes same day
appointments are available.
We run a multidisciplinary one-stop clinic and
biopsies are taken the same day. The results can
be obtained rapidly for discussion in the weekly
MDT. Should a breast cancer be diagnosed, then
appropriate treatment can be planned with biweekly operating sessions allowing minimal waiting
times.
Mrs Chalmers Breast and
Oncoplastic Surgeon
Working with the same close knit team of consultant radiologists, surgeons,
pathologists and oncologists across both NHS and private sectors provides a
continuity of care and decision-making for breast cancer patients and allows
rapid access to these specialist services.
Pre-operative diagnosis of node positive disease has been revolutionised by
using ultrasonic contrast (microbubbles) to facilitate percutaneous biopsy of
the sentinel node, reducing the risk of requiring a second operation to clear
the axilla. This facility is now available at the Nuffield Health Tunbridge Wells
Hospital, usually within days of diagnosis. Advanced surgical techniques are
employed to conserve the breast where at all possible and provide nipplesparing approaches to mastectomy through small and hidden incisions when
appropriate.
Support and access to information at this difficult
time are vital and we are delighted to announce
the appointment of our new MacMillan Clinical
Nurse Specialist,Kirstin Poole, right. Direct access
to specialist nurse support is available from
diagnosis throughout oncological treatment and
chemotherapy and during the follow-up period
along with access to specialist psychological
support services when required.
For further information please contact Mrs
Chalmers secretary at Nuffield Health Tunbridge
Wells Hospital on 01892 530305.
