ADMITTANCE POLICIES
The Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center (SRAC) intends to ensure access to recreational and aquatics programs and does not
discriminate on the basis of age, gender, ethnic origin or ability.
Children of SRAC members 11 years of age and under must be accompanied and supervised by a parent, grandparent or legal guardian at
all times while utilizing the SRAC.
All members must present their membership key tags for daily admittance into the SRAC. Have you lost your scan tag? Replacement
tags are $5.
All non-members may enter the SRAC by purchasing a punch card or by paying the daily admission fee. ID is required.
All recreation and program participants, spectators of Smithfield Parks & Recreation (SPRD) sponsored athletic leagues, support staff or
facility renters along with invited guests may enter the SRAC facility free of charge. However, these individuals are restricted to the area of
the facility associated with their attendance.
LOCKERS
All lockers are available for daily use. Members and guests must provide their own lock. Locks and items in lockers must be removed by
closing. If locks remain at close, they will be removed and all items in locker will be removed.
CODES OF CONDUCT
Profanity, abuse of equipment, unsportsmanlike conduct or failure to comply with the rules and regulations of the SRAC or Parks and Recreation may result in suspension from the facility or grounds.
ATTIRE
Proper athletic attire and closed toed shoes must be worn in the fitness area. Wet bathing suits, sandals, flip flops, loose clothing, work boots,
etc. are not allowed in the fitness room. BATHING SUITS ARE REQUIRED IN THE POOL.
FITNESS ROOM
Must be 12 or older to enter the fitness room.
No open toed shoes allowed in the fitness room.
It is expected that all fitness room users clean up after themselves. Please put weights back in their proper storage space. Wipe down
equipment after you have used it, place trash and recyclables in the proper receptacles. Do not forget your personal belongings!
You are exercising at your own risk.
Please be courteous of other people. Allow access to weight machines and limit cardio use to 30 minutes if people are waiting.
POOL and SPLASH PARK
Children 48 inches and shorter must be accompanied by an adult (18 or older) while in the main pool. (Effective 5/1/14)
Children 3 and under must be accompanied by an adult while in the splash park.
ALL children must be supervised by an adult.
Appropriate swimwear (bathing suit) is required in both pool and splash park. No street clothes allowed. Babies must wear a swim diaper
when in the water. If your child has an accident, please report it to pool staff immediately.
All swimmers who wear approved lifesaving devices must have adult in the main pool. (Effective 5/1/14)
TOWELS and MISC. EQUIPMENT
The SRAC provides towels and access to basketballs and racquetball equipment for use. Keys or scan tags are traded for use of towels
and equipment and will be returned when the borrowed items are turned back in.
No outside basketballs are allowed in the facility beyond the reception desk.

PLAYROOM
SRAC provides a FREE playroom service up to 1.5 hours per day for children 6 months to 11 years of age for its members so they
may utilize the facility. Members may use the playroom facilities during operating hours which are defined as:

*Paying guests wanting to utilize the playroom must pay $5/child and must present receipt to playroom staff
RESIDENT/NON-RESIDENT POLICY
Residents are those individuals who live in the Town of Smithfield and pay Town of Smithfield taxes. We reserve the right to
require proof of residency.
REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT OF FEES
Registration for membership, services and programs may be made in person at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center.
Payments must be presented at time of registration. The SRAC accepts cash, checks, MasterCard and Visa. If you have
extenuating circumstances which may affect your ability to pay for membership, programs and services, please see the SRAC
Director or the Recreation Center Supervisor about our scholarship opportunities.
SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Scholarships and fee reductions are available for those who meet established income criteria. Please contact the SRAC Director,
Dale Ham, about our scholarship opportunities.
WEATHER POLICY
The Town of Smithfield, SPRD and SRAC reserves the right to cancel or delay programs and services due to inclement weather.
Area radio and TV stations will be contacted and SRAC’s website and Facebook will be updated.
PHOTO POLICY
SPRD and SRAC reserve the right to photograph program participants for publicity purposes.
LOST AND FOUND:
The Town of Smithfield and SRAC are not responsible for any lost or stolen items. Each member/guest takes full responsibility of
securing items either in or around SRAC facilities. All items turned in to the lost and found at the Reception Desk will be held for a
maximum of two weeks. After such time they will be removed.
SPECIAL NEEDS
Individuals with special needs are encouraged to utilize programs and services. Please let us know of any assistance you may need in
advance of participation. Contact the Recreation Center Supervisor at (919) 934-1408.
GYMNASIUM AND WEIGHT ROOM
Smithfield-Selma High School has priority of the Gymnasium and Strength Training Room during normal school operating hours of
7:30 am to 5:00 pm. Open gym times are anytime outside of those times.
Open gym times may be interrupted occasionally due to recreation leagues or special events.
REFUNDS
In the event the Town of Smithfield, SPRD or SRAC cancels or adjusts a program as to time, date, or place, a credit will be issued
for future use, or you may request a refund in writing. Requests for refunds on programs and services must be submitted to the
Recreation Center Supervisor at a minimum of 5 days prior to program/service beginning unless otherwise stated. If requests are
submitted after 5 days prior to programs/service beginning, the Recreation Center Supervisor at sole discretion may issue a credit or
registration transfer for future programs and services. A $10 administrative fee is retained for all participants/renter cancellations.
Refunds take approximately 2 weeks to process.
RETURNED CHECK POLICY
A service charge of $25.00 will be applied for each check or returned EFT transaction for insufficient funds or closed accounts.
Payment for returned checks or EFT payments will be accepted in cash only. Members and/or guests utilizing the SRAC with
outstanding balances due to returned check or EFT transactions will be prohibited from renting facilities and participating or
registering for SPRD and SRAC programs and services.

Membership Rates:
All SRAC memberships are based on annual agreements. Members receive discounts on services and programs.
An annual amenities fee of $9.00 covers use of bath towels, sweat towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotions, dryers, etc.
Fee billed on annual enrollment date, by draft or upon membership renewal. Smithfield Residents are defined as paying Town

Membership Terms Defined:
Enrollment Fee: One-time non-refundable, as you remain a continuous member.
Individual: Member must be 14 years to 58 years of age at time of enrollment to qualify for individual membership.
(Members 14 years of age to 17 years of age must have a legal guardian responsible for enrollment and membership).
Family (max 2): A family is defined as individual, spouse and/or dependent children that can be claimed on taxes. Step
children, foster children and adopted children qualify. Court documentation is required to include foster children on family
membership. (Children must be 12 years of age and older at time of enrollment to qualify for membership).
Family (max 4): Minimum of three dependent family members on same membership as defined as individual, spouse and/or
dependent children that can be claimed on taxes. Step children, foster children and adopted children qualify. Court

Senior (Individual): One person age 59 and over at time of enrollment.

Family Add-on (per): If family consists of 5 or more people, a charge of $10.00 per month per additional person will be added
to the Family (max 4) membership rate.
Anyone age 23 years or older, engaged couples, couples living together, older siblings, aunts, uncles,
cousins or grandchildren DO NOT qualify for the family rates. Individual memberships would apply.

FREE fitness classes are offered to members throughout the week. Aerobics,
Cycling, Tai Chi, Yoga and Zumba are available. The schedule is distributed
monthly and can be picked up in the lobby area, the front desk, or viewed
online at www.sraconline.com. If you are not a member and wish to attend a
fitness class, a day pass can be purchased.
The Aquatic Center is now accepting membership through the Silver Sneakers
program. Please check with your insurance provider to see if you qualify.

SMITHFIELD STERLING SILVER SENIORS CLUB
Join us for a morning of activities and fellowship! Sponsored by Parks and Recreation, the club meets the second
Wednesday of every month at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center. Club members have the opportunity to go
on fun day trips and over night field trips, as well as participate in other activities outside of regular meeting days.
Ages: 55+

SILVER AEROBICS CLASS
On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays join other seniors for some walking and low impact exercise led by a qualified
instructor. This class is FREE to members of the SRAC. If you are not a member, daily passes can be purchased in
order to participate in this class. Check the group fitness schedule located in the lobby or online at www.sraconline.com
for times.
SENIOR COFFEE CORNER
Every Tuesday & Thursday morning from 8:30am-10:30am we will have FREE coffee available to all 55 and older adults.
There will be occasional breakfast treats and brain teasers. You do not have to be a member of SRAC to hang out with

Due to budget restraints and field availability, we can only accept the first 24 teams to
register. To be registered, a team must turn in the Team Registration form and pay the
fee. Due to limited space, spots cannot be held. A coach’s meeting will be held the last
week of March with league play beginning in April. Teams should expect to play two
games per week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and/or Fridays depending on field
availability. For further information, call 934-2148, or pick up a packet at SPRD.

Our Kinder programs only meet 4 times, and it is basically an introduction to the sport
of basketball. Actual play dates are Mondays & Tuesdays, March 2nd, 3rd, 9th and
10th. We will have two sessions per night – Session 1 from 6pm-6:45pm; and Session
2 from 6:45-7:30pm. Each session can take 15 kids, and once the first session is full
you will be in Session 2.

2015 DADDY-DAUGHTER DANCE
Daughter and father are cordially invited to the 18th Annual Daddy-Daughter Dance! Dads
and their daughters will enjoy musical entertainment, appetizers and a special daddy-daughter
photo to remember the evening by.

St Patty’s Day Pool Party
We don’t want you to be green with envy. We want you to come out and bring a friend
to the party. We’re hunting Leprechauns. Those pesky magical creatures

found all over and who knows…maybe you will find their pot of gold!!!! SRAC will be
charging half off day passes.

All 55 and older adults can participate. Sports: basketball shooting, shuffleboard, horseshoes, cycling, tennis, table

The Easter Bunny is Coming! Bring out the kids to collect Easter eggs and meet and greet the Easter Bunny. We will give

Looking to the summer...
Date: June 13, 2015
Sponsored by Chick-fil-a. Race begins at 7:30am. The race is a 250
yard swim, a 15 mile bike and a 5k run. The swim will take place inside
the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatic Center (SRAC) pool. The bike
ride will take you from SRAC into rural Johnston County, on a scenic
but flat course. The 5k run is an out and back run down the Buffalo
Creek Greenway and ends at SRAC.
All proceeds raised from the event go towards the Friends of the Park and the Smithfield Rotary Club of Central Johnston County, both of which help with events and programs through Parks and Recreation and SRAC. All registrations are

DOODLEBUGS
Dates: Every Friday
Time: 10:00-10:45am
Ages: 18 mos-3yrs
Dribble, drip, squish and squeeze. Delight in watching your child as together you get messy while
creating and experimenting with different materials. Experiment with dough, pudding, gelatin,
crayons, watercolors and more. Watch your young artist blossom! One child per adult please!
You can sign up for one class at a time or for a 4 week session. PRE-REGISTRATION IS
REQUIRED by the Wednesday before each class so that accurate supplies are provided.

This hands on class will focus on one specific theme for the day. Spiders, clouds, plants, wildlife
and so much more of the natural world will be discovered as participants hike, create, experiment
and LEARN about the natural world around them.

SRAC KIDS NIGHT

Ages: 5-10 years
When SRAC closes, the fun begins! Drop your kids off in a safe, supervised environment that is
kid friendly and parent free. Swimming, gym time, snack and other organized activities are
offered throughout the night. Please contact the center to find out the activities for each night.
Activities will vary.
WONDERLAND TEA PARTY
Date: February 7, 2015

Ages: 4-10yrs old
All princesses and Alice’s out there who don’t want to be late for a very important date need to
show up at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center. Come dressed as your favorite
princess or your favorite Alice in Wonderland character and fun will be had by all. We will have
tea, crafts and games. Pre-registration required by Jan 30, 2015.

WINDCHIME WORKSHOP
Date: March 7, 2015

Ages: 7-12yrs
March blows in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. In this workshop children will make clay
windchimes that will be musical to the ear. Pre-registration required by February 28, 2015
GNOME DOOR WORKSHOP
Date: March 28, 2015
Time: 10am-11:30am
Ages: 7-12yrs
Bring a little whimsy to your porch or garden. Children will put their creativity to the test and
create a gnome or fairy door that can be inside or outside.

SRAC Summer Camp
Where kids come to have the most fun! At SRAC they will swim, play, do arts and crafts, get outside! We start
our summer fun June 15th and will end Aug 14, 2015. Come 1 week or come all. Ages 5-12 yrs old. No camp
the week of June 29-July 3, 2015.
Full Camp information will be available in April, registration begins in May.

Adult Art Classes
POTTERY: BEGINNING HANDBUILDING
This class is designed for students interested in creating pottery without using the wheel. Through a combination of
demonstrations and individual work time, students will develop their handbuilding skills while making distinctive pieces
such as plates, vases, and bowls. The variety of construction techniques include stiff slab and soft slab. During the 6
week class session, students may come in during open studio times to work freely on projects. An instructor will be
available to answer questions. Clay can be purchased @ SRAC for $20/25lb bag. Class max: 5 people

POTTERY: WHEEL THROWING
Just beginning or a little rusty, students will be introduced to the pottery wheel, pottery equipment and how to create
mugs, vases, and other vessels. Because of limited wheels, student to teacher ratio is very good and students will have
a very personal learning experience. Clay can be purchased @ SRAC for $20/25lb bag. Class max: 4 students

OPEN STUDIO FOR POTTERY
Need a place to create? Want to network with other artists or just have a quiet, yet social art time? The pottery studio
will be open for all potters participating in classes to come in and work on their creations at their own pace. Anyone not
taking a class and would like to get a studio pass will need to get approval from the pottery studio director. There is a
$10 studio tour fee. All supplies are brought in by the participant and all projects will need to be taken home.
Studio is open during regular SRAC operating hours, except when a class is in session.
Fee: $100 for 6 months of studio time. Members get a 10% discount.
FUN WITH ACRYLICS FOR ADULTS
Beginning Painting:
Materials provided unless you have your own paints, brushes, etc. and want to bring your own.
Students will learn acrylic paint techniques and color blending while painting canvases worthy of
framing.
Dates: Monday nights (Classes are on going and anyone can join anytime)
Time: 6:30-8:00pm
Fee: $125/person/6 months
Advanced Painting/Open Studio:
Students will use this class as time to collaborate with peers while working on their own acrylic painting
projects. Students must provide their own painting materials. Must have completed a beginning painting class
to participate in the open studio time.
Dates: Tuesday mornings (Classes are on going and anyone can join anytime)
Time: 9:30-11:30am
Fee: $100/person/6 months
Instructor Judy Boyette has 25 years art experience teaching at Princeton HS and is the current president of the
Johnston County Arts Council. She has been painting murals for 35 years.

Tadpoles
BE A TADPOLE! A Smithfield Recreation & Aquatic Center one, that is. Moms and dads, bring out your little tadpoles and
swim in the splash park. We will have some additional activities for the kiddos to do. Play groups are welcome.

Swim Lessons
The Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center offers individualized swim lessons. Each participant will have a specific

LIFEGUARD TRAINING
*Must be at least 15 in order to take this class
* Must pass Pre-Course Swim Test in order to continue in class.
*You MUST attend 100% of all classes.
Fee: $175.00/Smithfield Residents

Registration: $25 non-refundable deposit
If you pass the Pre-Course, this deposit will be applied to your balance.
Upon passing Pre-Course, you will pay the remainder of the fee at the first class.
Registration begins February 1, 2015
Pre-course swim test includes:
1) A 300 yard swim with rhythmic breathing and breath control. You may use the following strokes
all or in combination: freestyle and breaststroke. You may NOT swim on your back.
2) You must tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs, with your hands placed under your
armpits.
3) You must swim 20 yards to retrieve a brick in 9 feet of water, then swim the brick back 20 yards
to the wall, using only your legs. All this must be done in a time limit under 1 minute and
40 seconds. You may NOT use goggles for #2 & #3.
You MUST complete all of the above requirements in order to continue in the class.

Smithfield Community Park Track Trail:
The Kids in Parks-Track Trail is open! Brochures are out! The Track Trail is incorporated into the mile
loop walking trail of Community Park. Register on-line at www.kidsinparks.com to track the trails you
hike and earn prizes! Track Trails are found in North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland,
Washington DC, and South Dakota.

The greenway trail entrance is located at the back of Smithfield Community Park and runs 2.94 miles along the
Spring Branch to the Neuse River Walk at Smithfield Town Commons and is part of the Mountains to Sea
Trail. The ten foot wide, paved path accommodates hikers, runners and bikers.
Buffalo Creek Greenway Facts:
The Buffalo Creek Greenway is 2.94 miles in length and is part of the Mountains to Sea Trail.
10 ft wide pavement section with 2 ft stone shoulders.
4 pre-engineered steel bridges and 250 feet of boardwalk.
Easements and/or land donations for construction were given at no cost.
Links Historic Downtown Business District to the northern and southern historic residential neighborhoods.
The greenway links four Town parks together and links two schools.
The entire 2.94 miles of greenway has no "at grade crossings" of roadways.
Less than an acre of wetlands was impacted, that required mitigation.
Allows pedestrian access to the $11M community/aquatics center.
The greenway has 5 trail head parking lots.
Approx. 1800 ft. of greenway constructed with State Trails Funds (NCDENR).
