Healthful eating can be challenging due to many temptations and our over-extended
schedules. Michele Hiatt, RD, LD, will share tips on foods to eat more regularly and how
to make healthy eating taste good. She’ll share information to help you make better choices
when cooking or eating out. And, she’ll cover smart snacking substitutions, how to satisfy
certain food cravings, food choices that are lower on the glycemic index, and tips on

SJMC Breast Health Program
The St. John Medical Center Breast Health Program offers a variety of comprehensive
services. Whether a patient is healthy or has been diagnosed with a breast abnormality
or breast cancer, she can receive the resources and education needed to promote and
maintain breast health. Through this program, patients of all ages can turn to our highly
qualified and compassionate Breast Health Coordinator, Joyce Forristell, CBPN-IC, for

STAR (Survivorship Training and Rehab) Cancer Rehab Program
Only 30 percent of cancer survivors get the rehabilitation services they need after treatment.
Diane Washburn, PT, and Christine Zitello, OTR/L, certified lymphedema therapist, are
certified by the STAR program and can treat pain, fatigue and weakness that may occur with

This class will cover a variety of birthing options, including an introduction to our
Holistic Birth Center program. We will share topics surrounding natural childbirth options,
including the use of hydrotherapy during labor and birth, aromatherapy, therapeutic use of
music, and relaxation techniques in an effort to achieve a satisfying birth experience. Also,
during the class you will be introduced to the services offered by a midwife or doula.

For dads only, come to this informative class on helping fathers for their new roles as

The Bradley Method focuses on a natural, unmedicated childbirth in the absence of medical
complications. This class stresses the importance of a healthy baby, healthy mom and

DIABETES SERVICES
2015 Diabetes Education
Working together to improve the wellness of people with diabetes and prevent
diabetes in those at risk. Diabetes is a serious, lifelong disease. We are here to partner
with you to reduce your risk for complications and effectively self-manage diabetes.
Pre-diabetes is serious as well. We can assist you in learning how to reduce your risk for
progression to type 2 diabetes. Group classes and one-on-one education are available.
Group classes (four-class series) are designed to provide basic and advanced education on
diabetes self-management. One-on-one education is for individualized diet and meal
planning instruction, blood glucose monitoring (proper technique ensures accuracy of
results and using the results to adjust lifestyle as appropriate) and insulin administration.
Counseling for weight loss and lifestyle modification also available. Diabetes class topics
include:
• Understanding what diabetes is and how it is diagnosed
• Making healthy food choices and meal planning
• Safely incorporating physical activity to improve blood sugar control
• Blood sugar monitoring, what causes blood sugars to rise and fall, and how to
manage fluctuations
• Protecting eyes, heart, blood vessels, nerves, kidneys and feet

Basic Skills Class
Do you have diabetes, but lack coverage for diabetes education? Do you have pre-diabetes
and want to reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes? If you answered yes to either question
then you may be appropriate for our Basic Diabetes Skills (three-class series). This series
provides an affordable way to gain very basic, but important “survival-level” information
that can be useful as an introduction to pre-diabetes, diabetes self-care, or as a review. This
program is designed for those who do not have insurance benefits that cover education

Medical Nutrition Therapy is a program that features a registered dietitian teaching
individuals how to improve their health and manage certain diseases through healthy eating.
Michele Hiatt, RD, LD, can help you manage conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, obesity, cardiovascular disease, food allergies and eating disorders. You must

DAP promotes and teaches deaf people self-advocacy skills to improve both access and
quality of their health care. DAP provides an on-site deaf advocate and American Sign

CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM FOR STUDENT ATHLETES
If your child suffers a head injury playing sports, you want to make sure he or she is safe
before returning to play. St. John Medical Center offers student-athletes the opportunity
to establish balance and cognition baselines with free tests. Taking this step before injury
creates an invaluable reference point for measuring injury impact, resulting in a faster and
more successful rehabilitation, and provides objective information to help clinicians make

Anyone over the age of 60 years can apply for a “Senior Supper Club Card.” Seniors can
pick up a Senior Supper Club Card from Westlake Center for Community Services or the

St. John Medical Center and receive a 40 percent discount on all food except bottled
beverages and “Simply to Go” items. There is a $10.00 limit per customer for the discount,
