New Year’s
Resolution
Clean Out Your Clutter!
St. John Medical Center’s New President & CEO William A. Young, Jr.
“I Want to Hit the Ground Running and Make a True Difference”
William A. Young, Jr. is embracing his
new role as President and CEO of St. John
Medical Center with enthusiasm, passion,
energy and commitment.
“St. John Medical Center has been making a difference in the community for 30
years now, and I am proud to be a member
of such a strong organization that is filled
with first rate individuals who come together
in fulfilling the mission and serving those in
need,” says William A. Young, Jr. “Our physicians, volunteers and employees are doing
that every day. They come together to make a
true difference in the delivery of health care.”
The announcement of Young’s appointment to his new position as president and
CEO was made in early December. He began
to report for work right away, even though
his official start-up date was Dec. 31. “I wanted to hit the ground running when I officially began on January 1, 2012,” Young says. “By
starting early, I have already met some amazing people at SJMC, and I look forward to
meeting the entire staff soon. At SJMC, there
are great people, doing great things. The entire community is fortunate to have such an
amazing team of health care professionals in
their own neighborhood.”
According to the latest financials, quality
outcomes and patient volume reports, SJMC
is doing extremely well --- better than many
other local community hospitals. “The numbers show that more and more individuals are
choosing the hospital for their care. And this
speaks volumes to our high quality of patient
care as well as our outstanding patient satisfaction scores --- people are telling us they would
return because of the superior care provided,”
Young says. “It is that high standard of service
we dedicate ourselves to, each and every day.”
As President and CEO, Young oversees

the daily operations and the
medical center’s growth and
service expansion plans as it
continues to meet the health
care needs of the West Side
community.
Specifically, he will
manage the medical center’s five-year, $100-million strategic plan, which
includes modernization,
renovations and adding
specialty services and programs. Over the past year,
several strategic initiatives
have been implemented
such as opening of the UH
Neurological Institute at
SJMC; expanding and relocating the SJMC Pain Management Center; installing
2-D digital mammography
technology as well as add-
ing a state-of-the-art special procedures room.
“Thanks to this investment made by our
partners the Sisters of
Charity Health System
and University Hospitals,
we are experiencing tremendous upgrades to the
facilities as well as adding new services and programs,” Young says.
In a few weeks, SJMC
will open the SJMC Breast
Health Center. Early this
year, the campus will welcome a satellite location of
the University Hospitals
Seidman Cancer Center,
as well as the completion
of a renovated entrance
and front lobby. The medical center has also added
two new OB/GYNs to
its West Shore Women’s
Health program.
“This is a very exciting time for SJMC,”
Young adds. “We are undergoing a transformation that will further enhance our reputation as
the health care leader on
Cleveland’s West Side.”
Prior to his appointment at SJMC, Young spent
more than five years as COO
for South Pointe and Marymount hospitals. He also
worked at Humility of Mary
Health Partners where he
served four years as president of St. Joseph Health
Center in Warren, Ohio.
“I am very pleased to
be back working in Catholic health care. I had that

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is hosting a special exhibit featuring select
pieces from the 2011 EXPLORERS and eXpressions
programs, including a piece from 2011 WHS graduate
Janey Eager.
The official opening of the exhibit will be from 3
to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22. The exhibit will be on
display on the ticketing level next to the Delta Airlines
counter, opposite the skyway that connects the parking garages to the airport. The exhibition runs through
March 1.
Eager won a blue ribbon for her piece, “Waiting On
Fate,” in the 2011 eXpressions art program.
EXPLORERS is a program that uses creativity to engage kindergarten through eighth grade students in the
study of health and wellness. Cleveland Clinic medical
professionals speak to area art classes on important health
issues and the students use creative interpretation to create
pieces of art related to the topics discussed.
The eXpressions art program utilizes the arts to engage high school students in the world of scientific research. Through project-based, peer-to-peer learning,
students produce creative interpretations of research
conducted by Cleveland Clinic summer interns. The program gives participants a deeper, real-world understanding of art and science while promoting creativity, communication, critical thinking and teamwork.

in Toledo. I look forward
to fulfilling the mission of
the medical center,” Young
says, a CPA who also holds a
Masters of Business Administration from the University of Toledo, and a Bachelor
of Science degree from Ohio
Northern University.
While at St. Joseph
Hospital, he oversaw an
extensive renovation program. “At St. Joseph Hospital, we had a major expansion project that replaced
all the operating rooms
and the related support
space. Of course the project
at SJMC is a much larger
scale, being a $100 million
reinvestment,” he says of
the current SJMC strategic/
modernization plans. “We
have some excellent people
who are already leading the
process, and doing a fine
job, and I look forward to
joining the work team as we
move ahead with plans.”
Before joining SJMC,
Young states that he
knew about the success
the medical center was
experiencing. “It was fortunate for me to come
into an organization that
is performing at such a
high level,” Young says. “I
have to ask myself, ‘What
are the things I can do to
support the staff and the
physicians to reach even
higher levels of success?’”
Young says he eagerly anticipates working
with the organization’s
two partners. “It is great
to have two leading health
care partners, The Sisters
of Charity Health System
and University Hospitals,
committed to this medical center,” Young adds.
“Through their reinvestment, it says a lot about
their commitment to the
organization, and to the
people in this area.”
With so much going on at SJMC, Young
agrees he must keep the
medical center’s mission
at the forefront as well as
acknowledging its Catholic roots. “I vow to make
a difference at SJMC, and
continue to take this organization on its path of
success and excellence as a
premier medical center.”

2011’s Story of the Year
A Win in the Fight Against Hunger
later. By summer’s end, the
campaign had exceeded all
expectations.
“We received word the
wonderful news that our
grant helped to raise an
amazing $760,950 to help
feed our hungry neighbors,”
said Dr. Ted Castele, Chair
Emeritus Community West
Foundation, as the campaign concluded last fall.
“What is even more
amazing is that over 5,000
people contributed to this
campaign!
“This has been the
highlight of the year!”
The Challenge Grant
offered tremendous testimony to the generosity of
the human spirit when harnessed by Community West
Foundation, the West Side’s
nonprofit leader.
Hunger calls for bold
action. So respondents to
the Challenge Grant acted
boldly when they learned
of the local need for feeding
children through the summer months when reduced
price school breakfasts and
lunches are unavailable.
“The gifts came in
faster than we could ever
have imagined,” said

President

Northborough: A Leader in the New Home Market
continued from page 1
Northborough is an active adult community combining upscale amenities just
steps away from personal,
brand new residences.
Northborough is located at the corner of Rt. 83 and
Mills Rd.
Floor plans for the new
cluster homes start at just
$164,900. They include instant upgrades like stainless
steel appliances and granite
counter tops.
With a 2200 square foot
clubhouse now open, buyers
are finding Northborough
just the place to call home!
Just yards from your front
door, the clubhouse features
a large gathering room with
stone fireplace and a 55” flat
screen TV. It also offers a
fully equipped kitchen for
celebrations and parties,
swimming in the outdoor
pool over the summer, or
work outs in the exercise
room, with a mix of weight
equipment and cardio machines, all year around.
“All of the homes have
open floor plan living with
spacious kitchens and plenty
of storage,” said Project Manager Tim Hinkle. “They are
all one story and feature 9’
ceilings and split bedrooms
for added privacy.”
Developer Bud Hagy, a
longtime Westlake area civic
activist and founder of events
like Celebrate Westlake and
Avon Eagle Run, is committed to bringing this compelling adult community to the
area as an affordable and attractive choice in quality new
home living. His GreenQuest
Development office is located
at the corner of 83 and Mills,
lies and friends together
through a designed community that our homeowners are proud to live in and
call their own,” said Hagy.
Sales have been brisk,
and residents enjoy life in a
quaint Active Adult Community in a great location,
just around the corner from
Northborough.
“We take great pride in
every home we build and
give each homeowner the
personal attention they deserve. Our neighborhood

was arrested after causing a disturbance at a Center Ridge
Rd. restaurant on Dec. 26 at 1:38PM. He had been annoying a waitress by repeatedly touching her (after being told to
cut it out) and had no money to pay his $20 bar bill. He was
charged with Petty Theft and Disorderly Conduct Intox.
A 59-year-old homeless man was arrested for Domestic
Violence on Dec. 28 after a 9:42AM incident at the Westwood Rd. home of his ex-wife. He had been visiting for Christmas and got into an argument and then a fistfight with his
19-year-old son after the son drove the father home from the
father’s dentist appointment. Both had red marks on their
faces, but the father was found to be the primary aggressor.
The suspect was released on Dec. 29 after a TPO was issued.
Some unknown theater lover in NYC used a Westlake
man’s American Express card number to buy 2 tickets
($786!!! I hope they were in the front row!) via the Internet to see the Broadway production of “Spiderman: Turn
off the Dark” on Dec. 25. The theft was discovered on Dec.
28 when the victim was checking his account. Spiderman’s
arch enemies Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Sandman,
and Rhino are not believed to be involved.

Mercy Opens Behavioral Health Unit
Mercy has opened a new, state-of-the-art behavioral
health unit at the Mercy Regional Medical Center.
The unit is one-of-a-kind in Lorain County, offering the safest, most therapeutic treatments for patients,
aimed at empowering them to recovery and improved
quality of life.
Mercy behavioral health services include crisis intervention and emergency screenings, inpatient services
for adults, chemical dependency assessments and referrals, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient
program and linkage to community resources to ensure
continuity of care. The unit includes three levels of beds
– psychiatric/medical for an aging population, high-risk/
low beds for patients at risk for falls due to psychotropic
medications and psychiatric box beds for patients under intensive care. The unit provides a collaborative care
environment for patients with innovative safety features
to address the unique risks
associated with behavioral
health patients and a multisensory environment to
provide experiential and
self-directed solutions for
behavior management.
“When we thought
about what was most important in designing the
unit, we knew it should be
reflective of our mission,”
says Carol, director, behavioral health services. “We
believe that we have succeeded in creating a space
that complements the quality care delivered by our
dedicated staff.”

Mean Dean:
Ironman MVP!
Enjoying the holiday
season means one thing
for St. Edward wrestlers:
Winning.
The Eagles, ranked
tops in the state and second
nationally this season, went
on a tear through December.
With
126-pounder
Dean Heil earning a title at
the famed Walsh Ironman
Tournament in December,
the Eagles posted a strong
second place finish to Blair
Academy (a five year prep
school from New Jersey).
Heil, or “Mean Dean”
as he calls himself on his
twitter handle, impressed
one and all with a stupendous Ironman performance. He earned the 2011
Bill Barger Award for the
Most Valuable Wrestler at
the top rated event.
St. Edward then went to
Minnesota last week , forgoing their usual appearance
at the Medina Invitational
Tournament. The Eagles
competed in The Clash, an
elite dual meet tournament,
and defeated the fourth, fifth
Westlake Village Holiday Rewind
and sixth ranked teams in the
country to capture this prestigious title. St. Ed topped
2011 national champ Apple
Valley of Minnesota, 32-22,
in the title dual to claim the
crown.
Heil produced one of
the strongest performances
in Ironman history at the
Walsh Tournament, cruising undefeated through one
of the toughest Ironman
brackets in history.
Mark Martin (170)
joined Heil as an Ironman
champ.
“Our kids were real
gutsy, they really worked
hard. They were as aggressive as anything. But to tell
you the truth, they were disappointed,” said Eagle coach
Greg Urbas after the runnerup showing at Ironman.
“They’re not happy, not
satisfied, and that is healthy.
They want to get better.”
Ed’s returns all 14
starters from last year’s
Div. I state championship
team, including state title
winners Heil, Martin and
Domenic Abounader.
The holiday season was just great for friends, family and fun. The annual Christmas Party
at Westlake Village gave residents and guests a wonderful holiday opportunity to share
the best of the season with laughter, music and great food. Here’s to a holiday rewind at
Westlake Village! Happy New Year everyone!
