Westlake Heart Attack Victim Survives Thanks to Employer’s Prepardness continued from page 1 58-year old Mark Clodwick was dead when he collapsed from a heart attack while at work in Westlake several months ago. But, thanks to the preparedness of his employers and co-workers at Nelson Stud Welding, located on Sharon Drive, Mark is back at work today. Last week, he and fellow workers gathered with City of Westlake safety personnel and representatives of UH St. John Medical Center for a Celebration of Life. The group recounted the events of the day that could have turned out much worse had Nelson Stud Welding not purchased an AED machine and provided training classes in CPR, first aid and use of the AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Mike Bartkiewicz, a co-worker at Nelson Stud, was first to notice that Mark went down to the ground on the shop floor. He immediately alerted fellow employees, who responded in life-saving fashion. Another employee, Aaron Henely, was instrumental in giving life saving help. First, he made the 911 call from his cell phone after coming upon Mark on the floor. He then made a call out to a third employee, John Johns, to go and get the AED. Aaron then attached Mark to the AED, giving the shocks that the unit called for. Aaron continued his lifesaving help to Mark by giving CPR and not stopping until medical attention arrived. Nelson Stud’s Patrick Prendergast stayed on the phone with 911 dispatcher Jessica Pagenstecher as life-saving activities continued. “She gave us the phone support on giving patient care until police and fire arrived,” he said. “She assisted in directing police and fire to the rear of the building.” Other Nelson Stud team members went to the front of the building and made sure police and fire drove to the rear of the building, closer to where Mark was. “It was intense,” said Aaron of the day of the event. “I am just glad we were able to help him.” “Aaron’s actions truly gave Mark the chance to make it to the hospital and have a successful outcome,” said Daniel Ellenberger, Director, University Hospitals EMS Training & Disaster Preparedness Institute. Mark was transported to St. John Medical Center where surgeon Hani Khaddam, MD, performed successful triple-bypass surgery. continued on page 7 Westlake Mayor Dennis Clough, Westcom 911 Dispatcher Jessica Pagenstecher, heart attack survivor Mark Clodwick, Nelson Stud employee Aaron Henely and Westlake Fire Chief James T. I had a patient come in recently with an interesting story, one that I have heard so many times over during my last 30+ years in dentistry. The patient is a teenager who saw a couple of dentists. The first dentist’s opinion was that the teen had 16 cavities that needed to be filled. Skeptical, another dentist was asked for another opinion. The second dentist said there were no cavities, but the patient had “shadows”. One of our trusted patients suggested that the teen be seen in our office so that we could decide what was in the best interest of the patient. We examined this new patient, took some new x-rays and conclusively told the patient that both of the previous dentists had been correct. Yes, you read that right – I told the patient that both of the previous dentists had been correct. You see, this patient did indeed have some shadows inside the teeth. What that basically means is that there are areas in many of the teeth that were “pre-decayed”. Parts of the teeth were going through a demineralization process which means that some of the minerals were getting sucked out of the teeth because of the poor daily diet of Pop Tarts and candy. Because the patient rarely brushed, the sugar in those foods was starting to process cavities, but they hadn’t fully turned into cavities just yet. If left alone, the patient would indeed need at least 16 fillings, if not more. So the first dentist had been right, maybe just a little too early on what needed to be done. The second dentist saw some hope for this young patient and being that he only saw “shadows”, if the patient would Dr. Louis Malcmacher Dr. Morris Edelstein improve upon the oral hygiene and add some other at-home treatments, she indeed could reverse these shadows into good healthy tooth structure. That dentist was probably being a little overly cautious, but had not really given this patient proper oral hygiene instructions on how to protect her teeth from getting these cavities. We use a great addition to oral hygiene in our office called MI Paste Plus. Essentially, it will put the minerals back into a tooth to eliminate the so-called shadows and almost reverse the pre-decay process so that these areas will not turn into cavities in the future. We gave the patient strict instructions as to what needs to be done to protect the teeth and if these instructions are followed, it is likely that there will not be any cavities in the patient’s mouth. If these oral hygiene instructions are not followed, then unfortunately this teen will be looking at a lifetime of going to the dentist repeatedly to get the teeth fixed. So many times whether or not someone gets cavities is literally in their own hands and in their own ability to brush, floss, and come in for regular professional cleanings. Call us today for a free consultation at 440-892-1810. We are happy to look at your situation and give you suggestions on what you can do to avoid dental work, if possible and give yourself a very happy and healthy smile. We All Have a Role in Fighting Prescription Drug Abuse Guest Column from State Representative Nan Baker One of the most important and widespread issues facing Ohio today is the addiction to prescription opioids and pain pills. Over the past handful of years, the General Assembly has been committed to finding solutions to this problem, which is touching communities all corners of our state—rural, urban and everything in between. What is so important to keep in mind is that this problem is not just being experienced by so-called “drug addicts,” but rather by individuals, including young kids, who make one bad decision that, in some cases, costs them their lives. In 2014, more than 2,400 Ohioans died due to an accidental drug overdose, according to the Ohio Department of Health. Additionally, prescription drug abuse often leads to the abuse of more dangerous substances, such as heroin. So it is critical that Ohioans do everything they can to educate their children, neighbors and friends about just how serious a problem this has become. Two years ago, I introduced and passed House Bill 314, legislation that required doctors who prescribed potentially addicting drugs to minors to gather consent from the minors’ parents. We had found that many adults with drug addiction had started with prescribed pain medication. The intention of our legislation was to create a dialogue between doctors, parents and patients on the risks of taking potentially addicting drugs. Last year, I was proud to support House Bill 4, a piece of legislation that expanded access for naloxone, a drug that has been proven to reverse the effects of an opioid-related overdose and save lives. HB 4 was one of several bills that have been passed and enacted in recent years that I believe have done a lot to help Ohio overcome this tragic problem. But the battle is not over, and neither is our commitment in the Ohio House to fight it. In January, the Centers for Disease Control released guidelines and recommendations for handling the prescriptions and use of opioids. I am pleased that several of the guidelines contained in the report are already being considered by the Ohio General Assembly, including methods for not overprescribing pain pills. A major component in this fight is the reality that people’s pain subsides without them having to take all of the pills that were prescribed to them. This leads to pills sitting idly in medicine cabinets, during which time they can fall into the hands of children or other potential users. No solution will be easy. But in the meantime, simply The Villager welcomes letters to the Editor as well as news spreading the word about the dangers of drug addiction and its items. The focus on standby generators and their ability to keep homes and businesses operating is an understandable development since each year hundreds of thousands go without power and the numbers are climbing. Backup power is now surprisingly affordable and is a wise business decision. Compared to the expense of lost revenue and inventory spoilage, an automatic standby genset is a bargain that will provide years of reliable service. Many homeowners want the same protection, too: “It’s easy to see how quickly this investment will pay for itself. An average store may recoup the cost of a backup system during its first outage. Having standby power is the best way to stay in business. It is also one of the smartest investments for homes in northeastern Ohio and western PA. Compared to the cost of a flooded basement without the sump pump, no heat, frozen water pipes, no stove and no well water an automatic standby system can be a lifesaver.” In order to assist you with making the right standby power investment we strongly advise you to consult with the area’s Leading Generac® “Premier” Warranty Service Dealer and Installer for 28 years, Shepp Electric Company, Inc., who will conduct a free site survey and electrical load analysis in order to recommend the best size and placement of the system. They may also cause medical problems, such as skin rashes, swelling and, in some cases, nonhealing ulcers. “Healthy leg veins contain valves that open and close to assist the return of blood back to the heart,” says Margaret Mann, MD, Director of the Vein Clinic at University Hospitals Westlake Health Center. “Venous reflux disease develops when these valves become damaged or diseased.” As a result, vein valves will not close properly, leading to symptoms such as: - Throbbing, cramping or swelling in your legs - Itching on your lower legs or ankles - Varicose veins (large, twisted, blue or purple veins that bulge above the skin) - Discoloration of the skin around a swollen vein May factors contribute to the risk for varicose veins, including family history, age, gender, pregnancy and being overweight. People may put off treatment for their varicose veins, thinking that they will have to face painful surgery, hospitalization or long recovery times. Endovenous laser treatment (ELT) is a minimally invasive treatment option that uses laser energy to gently treat varicose veins. “It is the most comfortable laser procedure available and an alternative to invasive vein-stripping surgery,” says Dr. Mann. “The treatment is done in the office and patients can get back to their normal routine in just a few days.” ELT offers the following benefits for patients: - Rapid relief of symptoms - A quick and virtually painless procedure - Minimal bruising or scarring - An in-office procedure with no general anesthesia Are you a candidate for ELT? They are not married; he (35) owns a 2015 Chevrolet Impala and she (36) owns a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro. By mutual consent, they each used the other’s car and were to meet up that evening at a First St. business and trade back. The woman says the male reneged on the deal and took off with the keys to both, leaving her and two of their five kids stranded. He says he left her behind so he could clear his stuff out of the house without having a scene. Prosecutor to rule. Cell Phone Hell A 20-year-old Amherst man had a really bad day on Feb. 23. He reported that an ex-girlfriend who obtained a TPO against him has been calling, texting, or private messaging him on Facebook as often as 75 times a day. Note that if he were to respond, it would be a violation of the TPO; her reaching out to him, while foolish, is not. He was, however, arrested on the strength of warrants from Strongsville PD, Portage Co. SO, and OSHP. The persistent female in question was contacted by a WPD officer and told to knock it off or face Telecommunications Harassment charges. She said she would comply. Stolen Car, No License 23 and 24-year old Avon Lake men were caught driving a stolen 2006 Honda CRV on Bradley Rd. on Feb. 21. Not that it concerned him in the least, but the younger man driving was under suspension for a recent OVI; he was arrested for RSP, DUS, and not signaling a turn. The elder man had warrants from two other police agencies and faces Complicity to RSP. Bro-man Stopped in Traffic Violation Bro. Bro-Man. Bro-Meister. Teddy Broosevelt. Whatever he calls himself, a 35-year-old Olmsted Falls bro-man pretended to be his real bro on Feb. 12 and was stopped by Westlake Police. The bro-man was stopped for a traffic violation and identified himself as being his own brother. The bro-man has done this so often that there is a fraud warning attached to the brother’s BMV license file, report Westlake Police. Mr. Phony Baloney bromeister was arrested for Driving Under Suspension, Obstructing Official Business, and on warrants from other departments. High Drama at Westlake Hotel A fight, a car stuck in a snow bank, a denial of violence from a pregnant girlfriend, tasering and a felony arrest all added up to a night of excitement at a Westlake hotel last week. The scene began to unfold when security was called to a fight at the Crocker Road hotel on Feb. 15. A male suspect was seen leaving the building. A 28-year-old Cleveland woman in the room claimed that the argument was only verbal and that she had just met the male. Officers saw the woman walking towards his 2004 VW a short while later and tried to stop him in the parking lot; he fled, but got stuck in a snowbank. He then fled on foot, was caught, fought with officers, and was tasered. The female then admitted that he had hit her, that they have lived together on and off, and that she may be pregnant with his child. The male suspect has a prior DV, making this charge a felony. He was also charged with OVI, BAC (.098 breath), DUS, Fleeing, Resisting Arrest, and lesser traffic charges. Craigslist Scam Averted A savvy would-be renter saved himself trouble by double-checking on a Craigslist house rental offer. He drove by the Dover Center Rd. house in question on Feb. 15 and found that it was up for sale, not for rent. Law You Can use Understanding How Criminal Records Are Sealed Q: What, exactly, is a sealing? A: Eligible offenders convicted of certain types of crimes can ask the court to “expunge” (seal) their convictions. If the court seals your convictions, those convictions are no longer in the public record. Courts seal records so that eligible offenders can move on with their lives without the stigma of a criminal conviction. Q: Who qualifies for sealing? A: An eligible offender is someone who has no more than two misdemeanor convictions or one felony and one misdemeanor conviction. When a court determines if you are eligible for sealing, it will not consider the following offenses: minor misdemeanors, most traffic offenses (with the exception of convictions for OVI/DUI or refusing to take a breathalyzer test), speeding tickets, most convictions for driving under suspension (DUS), and most convictions for possession of marijuana (which is generally a minor misdemeanor). Q: Might I be considered an eligible offender even though I have more than two convictions? A: Maybe. If your offenses were committed at the same time, or arose from the same act, the court still may find you to be an eligible offender. Also, if your convictions occurred within a three-month period, and you were tried in the same court proceeding, you may be an eligible offender for sealing. It is up to the court to decide if you are an eligible offender. Visit TheVillagerNewspaper.com for this entire Law You Can Use column. presented by: “I will stand up for you.” www.JTBurkeLaw.com | 440.895.1234 Joseph T. Burke is an experienced lawyer in the Cleveland area. He practices in personal injury, OVI/DUI defense, civil litigation, and more He had already called the Houston phone number in the ad; the male that answered had a heavy Asian accent and would not show the house. Our intrepid renter then found that the owner had passed away, hence the sale and the ghoulish attempt by unknown persons in TX to take advantage of the situation. The ad was taken down as of Feb 18 and the account suspended. Mail Tampered A check that a Doral Ln. man left in his mailbox for the letter carrier to take was instead stolen on Feb. 11. It was then altered to change the payee and to increase the amount by $1000. The bank is assisting WPD’s investigation; it appears the transaction took place in Cambridge, OH via mobile banking app. POSTSCRIPT: it is strongly recommend that outgoing mail be placed in the familiar blue USPS deposit boxes. Obvious Evidence A planter in the median in front of Westlake High School on Hilliard Blvd. was clobbered by a 2010 Hyundai on the evening of Feb. 14. We knew this because the bumper was left behind. The suspect vehicle and driver (22-year-old Westlake woman) were found at a Dover Center Rd. gas station a short while later. She was arrested for OVI, BAC (.162 breath test), and Failure to Control. ID Thefts A Willow Run woman discovered she was the victim of ID thefts on Feb. 4. Someone in CA added 2 lines to her cellphone account and tried to obtain a phone and IPad. The transactions were cancelled. On Feb. 17, a retail chain contacted her about her new account, which she was not aware of. It was also closed, and she reported the incidents on Feb. 18. Also on Feb. 18, an Essex Ct. woman reported that 3 new cells phones were purchased under her name in CA on Feb. 3, thus deactivating her own phone. The service provider shut off the new phones and turned hers back on. On Feb. 12, an unsolicited credit card arrived in the mail with her name misspelt; $707 in charges were already run up on it. A third credit card account also had $990 in illicit charges made on it. Both the latter accounts have been closed. Again on Feb. 18, a Beechwood Dr. woman re- ceived a $651 bill from a credit card company. She had not requested such a card, which was issued on Sept. 22. Somebody made a $200 payment on that card a week later. Man Scammed in ‘New Neighbor’ Ruse The Good Neighbor policy backfired on a Bay Village resident last week when he tried to assist a neighborhood newbie who lied about a house he said he bought. On 02/18/2016, at 0941 hrs, a Midland resident reported that on 02/16/2016, he was approached by a male who stated he had just bought the house next door, and was moving in. The male stated his son had just dropped him off and was going to pick a rental truck, but was $42.00 short for the rental. The alleged new neighbor asked the resident for a $42.00 loan, which he gave to him. After a few days the resident didn’t notice any activity at the house, which was still listed as “for sale,” and suspected he had been scammed. Police are investigating. Craigslist Scam Thwarted On 02/19/2016, at 1246 hrs, an East Oakland resident reported someone attempted to scam him through Craigslist. The resident reported he had advertised merchandise for sale for $300.00. He received a check in the mail for $1,500.00 for the items he was selling. The perspective buyer asked the seller to cash the check and keep the money he was asking for, then send the remaining money via Western Union to the perspective buyer. The seller recognized this to be a scam, and did not follow through. BVPD reminds resident to be very cautious when selling items on Craigslist, and recommend a public meeting area for all transactions. Car Entered/Theft On 02/18/2016, at 1813 hrs, a female reported that her vehicle had been entered and her wallet was stolen while she was visiting a friend on Sherwood. The incident happened two weeks ago, and the only items missing were her driver’s license and some paperwork associated with the vehicle. Police are investigating, and remind residents to please lock your vehicles and take valuables inside.
