Old Schoolhouse in Cygnet back in business! St Ayles Skiff
Regatta
A t a c e r e m o n y o n t h e 3 1 st
January from 3pm to 7pm, the
Old Schoolhouse in George
Street, Cygnet will be re-opened
for business! After a very long
period of renovations, the Cygnet
Community Children’s Centre is
organising a big opening day for
the community to come and have
a look at, and admire, the work
done on this beautiful building.
The opening will be a great family
event. At 3.30pm the Centre will
reveal the new logo with the help
of old and new users of the Old
Schoolhouse. The ceremony will
be officiated by Huon Valley’s
new mayor, Peter Coad.
Beside good food, nice music
and games, the Centre has
managed to book the popular
Zorb balls which hopefully will
attract many to come. Together
with a silent auction we hope we
can fundraise to replace some of
the Centre’s investment and help
with our tight budget!
It will be lots of fun for young
families. Some visitors might
like to take a walk along
memory lane and share their
schoolyard memories of the Old
Schoolhouse.
The Old Schoolhouse has a
rich history. Built in 1886, it is
one of the oldest buildings in
Cygnet and has a proud legacy
as a place of education for
the children in our town. The
Cygnet Community Children’s
Centre Inc. is now continuing
this purpose by opening the
Old Schoolhouse as an Outside
School Hours Care Facility for
children 6-12 yrs of age.
‘The Centre has worked for two
years to get the building ready”
said Angela Conley, director of
the childcare centre. “We started
with a grant from the Bendigo
Bank two years ago to undertake
a structural report. This report
w a s s en t t o t h e Tas ma ni an
C o m m u n i t y Fu n d a n d h e l p
was received to repair the old
entrance of the building, which
had been slowly disintegrating.
At the same time, the owner of
the building, the Department of
Housing and Human Services
came to the party with a new
roof, a big paint job outside and
a door for disabled access. The
Centre has, with the help of a lot
of volunteers, financed the rest of
the works; the new entrance at the
back of the building and a path
between the Old Schoolhouse
and the Childcare Centre. All
this work is in preparation for this
beautiful old building’s new role:
A place for school aged children
- after school.”
Outside school hours care is
initially about supporting families
who have to work or study outside
the 9-3 time frame. We are
extending our program in Cygnet
in response to community need
and the changing nature of work.
The Old Schoolhouse will be
the venue for 6-12 yearr olds in
Cygnet. We have a bright, airy,
welcoming and relaxed space
where children can initiate or
select from a range of activities.
The 5-10 year old children who
currently use the childcare centre
will be helping us set up and plan
for the first term.
We w i l l h a v e a s o f t
and comfortable quiet
space for relaxing,
somewhere to work on
projects, hobbies or art,
and a wonderful natural
play space outside for
exploring and active
play. The outside school
hours care will be
open for public school
terms (excluding public
holidays) and if we
receive enough interest
we will also open for
vacation care programs
in the school holidays.

Organisers of
the St Ayles
Skiff Regatta
to be held
from Friday
13th to Sunday February 15th now
have 160 rowers registered for
the 30 races to be held over the
three days. Of those 160 there are
currently 31 who are new to the
experience of rowing a St Ayles skiff.
Rowers are coming from New
Zealand, Scotland, Victoria and
South Australia. To showcase the
town of Franklin to our overseas
and interstate visitors, as well as for
local enjoyment, a series of events
has been planned which include
a free concert for the Opening
Ceremony at the Palais Theatre on
Thursday 12th; a Solar Light Parade
on Saturday evening; and the
Closing Ceremony on Sunday which
will be packed with entertainment.
If your business, community
organisation, or group of friends
wants to row in the Corporate
and Community race planned for
Saturday, contact Shane on 0408
363 196. Shane is expecting at least
30 entries, which will create a lot of
friendly rivalry and fun between the
teams. Your team can have some
pre-race practice in the Imagine Skiff
if you get in early!
Registrations for the open and agebased races close on 1st February.
Most race categories are nearly full,
but there are still plenty of places in
the youth event for those over15
and under 21 years, and the over
70s event.
If you wish to enter a team, contact
the organisers at the Living Boat
Trust at www.tassskiffie.2015.org or
phone 6266 3224.

Strange but true
The importance of gut instinct
If you experience pre-wedding jitters, do
not dismiss them too quickly. Researchers
who interviewed newlyweds about their gut
instincts found that those who had suppressed
their doubts were more likely to end up in a
bad marriage. Psychologists at Florida State
University recruited 135 couples, and tracked
them for four years. When the newlyweds were
asked how they felt about their spouses, the
results tended to be overwhelmingly positive,
but what especially interested the researchers
were the results of a second test, designed
to gauge gut-level responses, in which participants were shown photos of their spouses
for a fraction of a second, and then asked to
hit a button in reaction to positive or negative
words. Four years later, those who had taken
longest to respond to the positive words were
less happily married than those who had
responded most quickly.
Detecting a fortune again
A metal detector enthusiast has discovered
the largest hoard of Viking treasure ever
found in Britain. Derek McLennan, 47, had
been searching Church of Scotland land
in Dumfries and Galloway for a year when
he unearthed the treasure. He found more
than 100 objects from the ninth or tenth
century, including a solid silver cross and a
large Carolingian silver pot, complete with
its lid. The haul, thought to be worth almost
$2 million, is McLennan’s third significant
discovery in less than a year.
Walk to ward off arthritis
The effectiveness of exercise for keeping osteoarthritis at bay has been highlighted by new
research. In a study at Boston University in the
USA, scientists found that people who walked
long distances each day, typically 4.8km,
despite having arthritis in their knees, were
much more likely to be mobile two years later
than those with more sedentary lives. Indeed,
their findings, based on 1,800 people, were
so pronounced that they recommended that
sufferers buy pedometers, so they can properly
track their exercise levels. Three thousand
steps a day helped, but 6,000 (around 4.8km)
was ideal. British experts welcomed the findings, but stressed the importance of wearing
trainer shoes with thick soles, and suggested
walking with a stick to reduce pain.
The iPhone house
A property investor in Detroit is offering to
trade a family house for an iPhone 6. Andreas Gindelhuber bought the semi-derelict
223.2 m2 home in 2010 for $50,000, thinking prices had bottomed out, but the market
has slumped yet further since then. Last July,
he put it back on the market at $3,700. When
it did not sell, he told his real estate agent he
would swap it for an iPhone 6 or an iPad. So
far, his best offer has been an iPhone 5.

There are many taboos in society.
Death and dying is one such
difficult subject. Funerals and
the funeral business is another
difficult topic - a subject that
many people avoid. Funeral
planning is something that is
increasingly becoming a complex
business. Many people plan
their funerals meticulously, with
the hope that they will get all of
the details right, and that they
will ease the responsibility for
those who outlive them. Funeral
planning is a serious task, and
often also an expensive one.
Because of the increasing costs
involved, do-it-yourself funerals
are becoming popular.
If we take the attitude of a friend
of mine, we can reduce the
fear and stigma with a practical
viewpoint, and we can introduce
some humour. Recently, at a
Hobart hardware store, a Huon
Valley gentleman was overheard
to enquire of the staff: “Can you
show me where the body bags
and the coffins are?” He told
me that the staff member was,
initially, shocked and horrified
at the question, but very quickly
saw the practical aspects of the
request. His reply was: “Well, we
don’t have (anything like that) but
perhaps we should have. We are
a hardware store, after all.”
The request was only a joke; a
quick quip, from someone who
has considered all aspects of the
business of mortality: it was his
practical and humorous way to
approach a serious subject.
My elderly, humorous friend, and
his wife, who have taken the wellconsidered and serious step of
donating their bodies to science
(with the proviso: “... if they can
still find anything that is useful”)
said that the inevitability of death
cannot be avoided, so they (he
and his wife) might as well accept
it, and approach the subject with
humour. “We shouldn’t be so
serious. Have a laugh.”
Another friend, a practical
and frugal person, has also
discussed the funeral topic, and
has examined the possibility of
being buried on her property, a
beautiful rural area, where she
hopes to “become one with the
environment.” Her comments
were strongly prefaced with the
remarks that she was aware
that “... you must ask people
(for permission). Ask people at
the funeral homes, and ask the
Council – what are the rules and
regulations.” So far, my friend’s
enquiries came up with these few
details. You must ask, or involve,
a proper funeral home; the burial
site has to be where it doesn’t
affect a waterway; and the site has
to be fenced. My friend also said
that she has heard that you can be
buried in a shroud, but was unsure
of the details, and had, in fact, not
followed up anymore. “I suppose
I should.” I got the impression
that it is a difficult and daunting
subject, so I did some research.
There is information on various
websites. The best place to start
is a legal site. Perhaps you could

funeral insurance companies and
anyone who may have done the
same. These are useful for advice.
Especially, don’t forget the local

Cygnet & Channel Classifieds - 22 January 2015
When over half the country ’s
population attends an organised
community event, or gets together
to celebrate with family and
friends on Australia Day, January
26th, there’s got to be something
good going on. Australia’s come
a long way since that first fleet
arrived 227 years ago. We’re
a diverse society and our future
looks bright, bright enough to
call ourselves the Lucky Country.
A short history lesson
My grandmother was born
on Australia Day. However, it
wasn’t until she was a middleaged woman that her birth date
was adopted nationwide as
Australia Day. In 1818 Governor
Lachlan Macquarie declared the
anniversary of the arrival of the
First Fleet, which consisted of
eleven convict ships, a public
holiday in NSW. By 1888, a
century since that day, and with
more than sixty per cent of the
(white) population now having
been born in Australia, all the
colonies acknowledged the
significance of Anniversary Day,
but continued with their separate
celebrations at various times. By
1935, despite objections by some
that that day had signified a bad
start for the nation, everyone
agreed that January 26th, to be
known as Australia Day, would
be the country’s national day.
(However, it would not be until
1994 that all states and territories
actually united to celebrate with
a public holiday.) In 1938 a
Celebrations Council organised a
highly successful commemoration
of the sesquicentenary of the
landing of the First Fleet.
Time for reflection
Despite the fact that indigenous
Australians were included in
sesquicentenary events, the
aboriginal community put forward
a different viewpoint from the
celebratory one adopted for the
anniversary. Thus, it was in 1938
that the first Day of Mourning was
held concurrently with Australia
Day. And in The Bulletin, Norman
Lindsay portrayed smug and
righteous celebrators marching
past a belligerent policeman
ejecting a man in convict garb
from the parades: “Buzz off or
I’ll book you,” he says. Was the
nation in danger of forgetting
its true origins? Forgetting what
we owed to those who made
the Lucky Country possible? The
lone voice of a Perth newspaper
editorial confronted the nation:
“What has Australia done? It is
an incomplete reply to say that
she has lived for one and a half
centuries and grown fatter. We
should be able to find more
to our credit than that. Can
we do so? Probably one great
achievement will be found in the
courage and resourcefulness with
which we have overcome great
natural difficulties for ourselves;
and another in the way we have
faithfully groped towards our
ideals of a certain standard of
material good for all. Can we
also claim to have sought as high
a cultural level as we might have
done, to have always honoured
the things of the mind, and to
have applied justice and mercy
at all times to all those within our
borders?” These questions give
us much to ponder upon. Indeed,
they are still relevant today.
Winds of change
need to be altered. In 1949 a
concept of Australian Citizenship
was created for all Australians,
including Aborigines. (Prior to
this, all Australians were British
subjects.) In 1962 Aborigines
could choose to enrol as voters.
In 1967, 99.77% of Australians
voted in favour of Aborigines
being included in census counts.
In 1983, voting in federal
elections became compulsory
for Aboriginals as it is for all
Australians. Since 1984 no
Australian has been regarded as a
British subject; Advance Australia
Fair replaced God Save the
Queen as our National Anthem.
Cause to celebrate
Australians do indeed have much
to celebrate on January 26 th ,
but also much to forgive and
be forgiven for. Perhaps there
are regrets, as for any past that
can’t be changed. Certainly
there is much to reflect upon.
That Perth editorial again: “We
[have] a singular opportunity …
to show the world how a people
may live without privilege, class
prejudice, or private greed under
a democratic system and, by
a high level of citizenship, a
wise moderation and a sense of
responsibility and trust in both
the governors and the governed,
enjoy progress without oppression
…” Those words still ring true,
and it will be to our credit if we
can enjoy our festivities knowing
that we are making every effort to
live up to them. Grandma would
have been proud to celebrate her
birthday with such citizens.
On that first Day of Mourning,
a conference representing the
Aborigines of Australia, appealed
for “new laws for the education
and care of Aborigines and …
a new policy which will raise our
people to full citizen status and
equality within the community”.
Xavier Herbert espoused the
aboriginal people’s cause, hoping
his related book, Capricornia,
would win the Sesquicentenary
Prize for Literature. It did – but not
without controversy. Joseph Lyons,

Rural responsibility
I have recently read John
Fleming’s article in the 8th January
edition of the Classifieds and
wish to thank him for his gentle
but pointed way of answering
a discussion on fire safety and
community spirit. He is so right
about taking responsibility where
we possibly can, or making the
right decisions when we cannot.
If w e l i ve i n c o untr y a r eas
enjoying the lifestyle that affords
us, we must be prepared to take
responsibility, and that includes
helping our neighbours both
with fighting and also escaping
fire and understanding the time
factors. The council and the
emergency services give good
advice and are marvellous when
we are in trouble, but they cannot
do the impossible.
It is up to each and every one
of us to be prepared. So thank
you – I hope it helps others take
note of their situation.

OPINION
January
‘The wife drought’
…is the title of a revolutionary new
book by Annabel Crabb, she of the
ABC’S ‘Drum’ and the designer/
interviewer of that broadcaster’s
‘Kitchen Cabinet’. This is a quirky,
idiosyncratic look at the body politic.
She meets a range of politicians in
their own home kitchens to find out
what and how they cook, and with
their partners, eat. It’s more interesting for the fact that she catches
politicians ‘au naturel’ (most of the
time), in a context where errors are
less easily forgiven than in Parliament. Spin doctors and noddies
don’t get a look in. We catch her drift
in the ‘Wife drought’ quite early on:
‘Opening exists for leader of a small,
spirited team in a vibrant but often
chaotic environment. Applicant must
be mature and patient, as team
members may at times be prone to
sudden mood swings, unorthodox
social techniques, strategic tunnel
vision and outright insubordination.
Applicant will have responsibility for
cleaning, laundering, tutoring, light
maintenance, heavy maintenance,
procurement, occupational health
and safety, occupational therapy,
nutrition, ethical guidance counselling, transport, skills training, intrateam human resource management,
out-sourcing, mentoring, mediation,
education and sanitation.
Fine motor control and calm temperament a must. Creative experience and demonstrated innovation
strong advantages, esp. capacity to
construct, for example, a plausible
bat costume from basic household
items in less than ten minutes.
Some tasks may be repetitive.
12
Formal performance assessment
very limited, though applicant may
self-assess regularly in weaker
moments.
Salary is nominal.’
She goes on to observe that few
blokes would apply for this gig, even
if they had the requisite qualities
(which is unlikely). It’s also probable
that many dewy-eyed brides-to-be
might have second thoughts if they
read it. The formal structures of the
workplace, milestones, targets and
bonuses are simply not mentioned.
And you don’t get paid. The work
of the wife has no boundaries, and
there is a repetitive sameness about
her work; washed clothes get dirty
again, a brilliant home-cooked
meal gets eaten in about the same
time as a door-to-door pizza, often
with as little expressed satisfaction,
dirt, untidy clothes are a constant
incoming tide.
Contrast this with paid work in an
employment context. Sometimes
challenging, but usually predictable.
Once you shut the door of the house
behind you, you escape to a different
world; the soothing rhythm of the
train, the platitudes of the morning
paper, and the takeaway coffee
when you arrive. Get to the office,
‘good mornings’ all round, a brief
flurry of gossip, then to your cleaned
and tidied (by others) workspace
and the tranquillity of keyboard
and screen, the buzz of work going
on around you. And if you have a
full-time wife looking after the other,
domestic side of things, you are free
to stay back, to network, even go
for a drink.

While the other end, the end you
left earlier, contains the daily struggle to get the kids off to school on
time, reasonably clean and tidy, and
with their box-lunch whose menu is
a matter for daily negotiation (“not
vegem*te again, Mum!”). Then
often brought home uneaten. And
all this at the end of, what? Nearly
a half-century of campaigning for a
better deal for women, and to what
end? 76% of Australian full-time
working dads have a ‘wife’. ‘But
among mothers who work full-time,
the rate of wife-having is much,
much lower – only 15%’. And at that,
more common in homo- rather than
hetero-sexual contexts.
We’re talking about averages here.
I know and you know, househusbands who are very happy in
their chosen relationship model, but
they come to your attention precisely
because they are the exception, not
the rule. In my first marriage I was
the breadwinner, bringing home the
wherewithal on which we, in time,
nine of us, lived. Not counting dogs,
cats or ponies. It was a model, a
norm which worked well for us. The
wherewithal allowed us to live on a
small acreage which enabled the
children to grow up as we wished
them to: riding bikes and horses,
and sailing. They also learned
about personal responsibility and
autonomy. Our place was idyllic: it
bordered on a river in which lived
platypus, trout and eels. We swam
there, fished there, dodged snakes
there. It was a place to return to with
pleasure at the end of the day. The
point I make is that my wife was very
happy to be there. In a densely settled suburban and socially isolated
context, it might have been different.
Do roles matter so much if both
partners work? I think the argument
takes on a different complexion.
Roles are less clear cut, but too
often the female has to do two jobs,
not just one. Parenthood, actual or
surrogate, also changes the mix.
The nuclearity of families, with, usually, only two adults is also a factor.
But whichever way you look at it,
the basic fact remains: most wives
are women, who, if they work, do
two jobs. There is, indeed, a wife
drought. And it will be a long time
before there is a wife glut.
