Well, we are nearly at the end of a longer than normal term. It has been a very successful
semester with this term being as busy as ever. The children have all worked tirelessly gaining
immensely in their academic, physical, social and emotional growth. I hope that they all have a very
relaxing break and return refreshed and eager. I will be on leave for the first 3½ weeks returning
on August 12th. Mr Deere will be in charge during my absence with Mrs Carmody assisting in the
admin area. Additionally, Mrs Baynham will be on leave for the entire term 3 period.
Lapathon
Another very successful P&C organised Lapathon was had about a month ago. The final figure for
this fundraising event came in at $11000. Amazing!!!!! Well done to the organisers and all the
children and parents who supported this fundraising venture so well.
WA Education Awards
Nominations are now open for the WA Education Awards. There are quite a few categories to
consider. Please view via the link below. Information is also available from the front office.
http://www.education.wa.edu.au/home/detcms/navigation/about-us/programs-andinitiatives/education-awards/
Cross Country
Our recent Faction Cross Country event was well contested on a cold morning.
We were very lucky about the then perilous weather! After all the results
were tallied Dampier came in overall winners on 162 pts, followed by Pelsart on
154 pts and then Lockyer on 140 pts. Well done to all competitors and winners!
Minister’s Visit
The Minister of Education visiting on Friday 19th June was well received and the children were
typically at their best. I have no doubt he was very impressed as was the Hon. Peter Katsambanis
who accompanied the Minister. Well done to all the staff and children who helped host the visit.
Assembly
The final assembly of the term will be this Friday and will be hosted by B2, Year 2. Hope to see
you there.
Lightning Carnival
Last Friday we attended the annual Lightning Carnival. The entire cohort of athletes acquitted
themselves very well indeed. The displayed sportsmanship of the group was exceptional. Our
results were a highlight where the football team won as did one of our sofcrosse teams.
Fathering Project
The first Fathering Project (Dads of Hillarys) Father/Child
activity was held recently. Although the weather was not as it
could have been there were still 14 dads and 30 kids on deck!
A sensational first time turn out. Another Dads (only)
meeting will be held soon where they’ll “map out” what the next dad/child event will be.
Congratulations to all who went to outing #1.
Kindergarten 2016
We are now inviting enrolments into Kindergarten and Preprimary for 2016. Applications for Kindergarten children having
a closing date of Friday 24th July. This is the first Friday of
week 1 next term! Application forms are available from the front
office or on the school’s website http://hillarysps.wa.edu.au/.
Please pass on the message.
Reports
A reminder that reports can be picked up from classes today! If not collected today, your child will
bring home the report in a sealed envelope tomorrow.
It Caught My Eye!
It will take about 1 minute to read! Basic? Yes! Practiced? You be the judge.

Ron Chesny, Principal
Sensei Says
Students from Year to Six have been presenting their Jikoshokai. This is a
short speech where students introduce themselves and give some information.
Naturally the information varies with the student but I was very impressed
with the quality of the speeches this year. I am confident the students will be
able to meet a Japanese person politely and tell them a little about themselves
- hopefully not too much!
Holiday Fun at Hyogo
The Hyogo Cultural Centre in City Beach will hold holiday activities for children on Monday 6th
July. Activities run from 10.00 till 13.00 and the $10 cost includes a snack. The theme is Tanabata
and details are available from Mrs Clare or Mrs Nicholson in the library.
Hosting a Japanese student
Thank you to those families who have already expressed their interest in hosting a student. We
still have room for a few more and the Japanese school will need to know soon how many of their
students will be able to come on the trip. If you are still thinking about it, I would encourage you
to decide soon. Expression of interest forms are available in the front office or from Mrs
Nicholson.
P.E. News
Lightning Carnival
Last Friday a group of very keen Year 5 & 6 students went to Kingsway Reserve to participate in
the Whitfords District Lightning Carnival in a range of winter sports. Hillarys students did
themselves proud by displaying excellent sportsmanship and behaviour on the day. The results
across all sports were fabulous and what was even better was the effort put in by all the students
across a very tiring day of competition.
Final results:
AFL –
1st
Soccer –
3rd
Sofcrosse1st, 3rd and 5th
NetballDiv A
5th
Div B
3rd & 6th
Well done everyone and thank you to the parents who came out to
support Hillarys.
Interschool Cross Country
A reminder to all the students who were invited to attend training for the Interschool Cross
Country team that it is important to attend as many of the training sessions as possible in order to
be fully prepared for the competition in week 3 next term. The sessions are Monday and Thursday
afternoons 3.05-3.40pm and Wednesday morning 8-8.40am.
Mrs Armstrong P.E. Teacher
Are you interested in learning to converse in AUSLAN?
We have negotiated with the West Coast Institute to run an Introduction to Auslan course at Hillarys Primary
School next term. The course will commence in Week 2 or 3 and run at the school over five consecutive Tuesday
afternoons from 3.00 – 5.00 pm. The Auslan course will be conducted by trained staff from The West Coast
Institute.
Though many teaching and non-teaching staff at Hillarys will be attending the course we have still a few vacancies
available and would like to offer a place to any member of our school community (parent or extended family)
who would interested in gaining this valuable skill.
The ten hour course will give participants enough skills to be able to converse in Auslan and use the various
signs when conversing or working with those who have hearing difficulties.
Cost is $195 per participant. If you are interested in attending this course please contact the office for an
enrolment form. Enrolment must be confirmed by the end of term.
Once this form is completed and received by the West Coast Institute an invoice will be sent to you directly. If you
require any further information about the course please contact Jenny Baynham on 93076365.
Please note places are limited and will be offered on a first come basis.

MUSIC 2015
Semester 2
Dear Parents of Students in Yr 4 to Yr 6
In Music for semester 2, we are going to be exploring different musical
instruments. I am hoping that each child from years 4 to 6 will have the
opportunity to learn the basic skills of a tuned instrument and be able to play in a
group situation. It can be an instrument they have had some experience on, or an instrument
they have never played before. We will be starting this program in Week 1 of Term 3 so
hopefully everyone can be organised by then.
For this part of my music program, each child needs access to an instrument. Recorders are
easy to find and very cheap at some of the variety stores. Guitars, ukuleles and other woodwind
instruments are fine also. Keyboards might be a bit large and awkward but still suitable. If
necessary the school does have a limited number of recorders which we are able to lend out on
a temporary basis.
Also, if you have any instruments sitting in the garage or the spare room collecting dust, we are
trying to increase the supply of instruments in the school and would be very grateful for any
donations!
Please make sure the instrument is clearly labelled with your child’s name. I also need to make
sure that students are aware that the instrument is totally their responsibility. Large
instruments can be kept safely in my music room during the day but need to be taken home at
the end of the day. The school holds no responsibility for lost or stolen instruments.
Thank you for your continuing support and we look forward to sharing our music-making with
you at some point in the future! Please contact me if you have any queries.

Woolworths Earn & Learn 2015
Woolworths Earn & Learn is back and it is now easier than ever to earn valuable Last year more than
14,500 schools and Early Learning Centres including Hillarys Primary School benefited from the
program, boosting supplies in classrooms, libraries, music rooms, gymnasiums and science labs.
It's simple to participate. From Wednesday 15th July to Tuesday 8th September 2015, if you
shop at Woolworths you can collect Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers from the checkout operator or
through an online order and place them on a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet. There will be
one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco, and gift cards).
Once completed, simply place the Sticker Sheet in the Collection Box, either at your school or at
your local Woolworths.
Further information about this great program will be following.

KIDS MATTER
Why social and emotional learning is important
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is part of Kids Matter. Social
and emotional learning (SEL) is about learning how to manage
feelings, manage friendships and solve problems. These are
essential life skills that support wellbeing and positive mental health. Social and emotional skills
promote children’s ability to cope with difficulties and help to prevent mental health problems.
Children who have developed social and emotional skills find it easier to manage themselves, relate
to others, resolve conflict, and feel positive about themselves and the world around them. Kids
Matter emphasises teaching SEL as a way of promoting children’s mental health. SEL provides
practical skills that all children can learn and apply to everyday situations. Learning skills such as
self-awareness, effective communication and conflict resolution can also help to prevent the
development of mental health difficulties in children who might otherwise be vulnerable. In this
way teaching children social and emotional skills helps to promote resilience – the capacity to cope
and stay healthy in spite of the negative things that happen through life.
