AUGUST 2013
Brought to you by the Cherryland Community Association (CCA), 2013.
“Plan ahead” my wife always tells me. She is very good at it. If she
makes a dessert for a dinner party she has the recipe and off to the
store, days in advance. The night before she is a whirlwind of activity
with whatever she can do ahead. Down to the T, she is on schedule, the
dessert made; just like the picture. And I am looking for that striped shirt
I wanted to wear.
“I took it to Thrift Town last week, honey, wear the yellow
one…”

PRESIDENT’S NOTE
Presidents Message August 2013
August is upon us faster than you run a stop sign. We are up
to our neck in EALI meetings. My work is picking up again, supplying
the Bay Area with aluminum for manufacturing. We have hired 2
people in the last month. Rosie picture isn't it?
My garden is not in good shape. The resident opossum can't
wait for my tomatoes to ripen, gnawing away at my low hanging fruit.
The robins have taken over and devastated my berry crop. The grapes
are next. The birds hide themselves under leaves, carefully choosing
the darkest grapes, yet far from ripe. They dash to the tree tops as
soon as I arrive home. My only hope is for my flat beans, streaking up
the strings, more than 6 inches a day. Or the height of a wine glass,
my daily measure. The figs are just starting to droop, and I have a
large healthy crop. I'm willing to share, if only the birds didn’t taste
every one. Do they think it is a Farmers Market, where every table
offers a taste? I'll be happy to have whatever survives the wildlife.
While growing healthy food keeps us busy in the yard, eating
healthy food has many more commercial possibilities. Thinking about
a Ashland Cherryland Business District plan update, I can't help but
dream of our own gourmet ghetto along Mission Blvd. Sushi Land
Restaurant has made an impressive start. If you haven't tried it, it is
worth the wait. Across the street, the long narrow auto lot with the
permanent awnings could be an open air market. By far, street
appearance was a popular suggestion for attracting new business to
the corridor at our first meeting with Lisa Wise Consulting. Contracted
by the county, they will combine our input with the many others to see
what needs to be updated in the AC Business District Plan. Our tax
base depends on more businesses to survive. See the details at
Ashlandcherryland.org. This will take 2 years to complete, be sure to
get your 2 cents in.
I've been able to keep up with 2 EALI Visioning groups Governance and Public Safety / Realignment. As the groups simmer
down to a concentrated core, it seems easier to agree on concepts
that need real attention. Up until now, the question of money has not
really been covered. When it finally did, it was like a skunk walked
through the room.
Between the 2 groups we have come up with some goals and
projects under these goals. Semantics and grammar really count when
you start writing things to be seen on a ballot. Nate packages these
meetings nicely, Claudia is an excellent facilitator. She is patient to all,
but pushes ahead when necessary. The banter is enlightening from
the different levels of profession. The view from ground level didn’t
always match that from the administrators. But enlightening just the

same.
I feel that sometimes we are preaching to the choir. We are addressing problems that we didn’t
create. We have little chance of affecting, really, but we can try to patch up the symptoms.
And I’m thinking mostly of Public Safety and Realignment. Our top concern is crime prevention.
What could have stopped the crazed driver who crashed his truck into a young woman’s car to rob her of
her phone and some clothes? This is our population whether we like it not. And if they don’t live here,
they think they can get away with here. We really have strengthen the fabric of our community to be able
to absorb those coming back from state prisons. It is going to take more than a few county programs. It
is going to be up to everyone looking out for each other.
For governance, we narrowed it down to accountability, transparency and access to current and
accurate information. There is something lacking in our identity also. Something cities have. Do we need
a Sports Team? A Theme Park? A Major Factory or just a different spirit? What can hold us together to
show that the unincorporated area has hopes and goals like our neighboring cities? How do we get more
residents to have the same dream?
Each of these goals circles around, for the most part, and reflects areas where the County is
neglecting oversight or enforcement of existing statutes.
1) Maintaining County owned lots.
2) Code Enforcement for vacant buildings and Neighborhood Preservation
3) Adequate patrols for traffic and street presence.
4) Public Access to current information via Website.
5) Keeping General and Specific plans up to date and consistent.
All the stuff that costs money. But since our area was filled in with unplanned housing, there is no
money. We are learning the ins and outs of bureaucracy! It is nice to meet the Department Heads face to
face. There are new community members too! That is the best part.
Somewhere, a long time ago, money started shifting out of infrastructure mostly because of
property tax losses. It's the same statewide and nationwide. The ability to keep up technologically and
administratively is key to an efficient and effective government. A few years of slippage end up costing
ten fold in long run. I know, my company faces the same dilemma.
There is a good chance for a long term tenant at Banchero’s. We will be meeting this
week and next at our general meeting. Come by and have some shortcake!
The Community Center plans are starting to take shape. Layouts and general designs were
explored at our last meeting. Architects Noll & Tam lead the discussion and exercises in design and
impact on the site. HARD has been busy with the lot acquisition that gives access directly to Boston Rd.
This does add privacy considerations to 2 more neighbors adjacent to that lot. We want to utilize the
site to it’s fullest without overbuilding in the neighborhood. The next meeting is not scheduled yet, a few
months away.
See you at National Night Out! That’s tonight! St John’s Church San Lorenzo.

General Meeting
AUGUST
2013
My neighbors have
been working to restore this
house after buying it from the
original owners who were too
old to maintain it One of the
first things they did was add
solar panels on the roof. You
don’t even see them from the
front, they are there, reducing
energy costs and greenhouse
gases. The front yard is a work
in progress with an Asian
flavor. The wild plum and
Japanese Maple trees providing afternoon shade to the
house when the sun beats
down. They have a golden
touch with potted plants and
the small details that makes
this modest bungalow an
attractive house on Grove Way.
