In order to register for a Family Center program, your child's date of birth MUST be on file in the Family Center. A birth certificate or passport will be required as proof of age. Registration for all programs is age specific. Sign up in the Family Center or by telephone with your Library card. The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book BEFORE KINDERGARTEN (any book) to your newborn, infant, toddler, and/or preschooler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes you can repeat books) before your precious one starts kindergarten. Does it sound hard? Not really if you think about it. If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read 365 books in a year, That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around 5 years of age, you have more time than you think (so get started). The key is perseverance. To help, the Family Center will offer incentives. Come into Family Center and sign up today. You will receive a packet and bag to get you started. One School This is the tenth summer for the Plainview-Old Bethpage Summer Reading Trophy competition. The contest is always a huge success. Last year's trophy winner was the Stratford Road Elementary School, who won a collection of books. The winning school will be awarded the trophy during a special presentation. This year we predict it will be a real competition among the public schools in the district. The rules are the same. The winning school will be determined as follows: · Children must be registered in our Summer Reading Program Mrs. Ropke, · They must have read at least 3 books during School Media Specialist the 7 weeks of the program · The school with the highest percentage of children who meet the criteria will be awarded the Summer Reading Trophy · In case of a tie the winner will be decided by which school had the highest percentage of children reading 6 or more books Keep track of your school's progress on our display in the Family Center. SUNDAY, JUNE 26 FROM10:00 AM - 1:00 PM Family Center will again be holding a carnival to kick off our Summer Reading Program. It will be for program participants only. There will be a variety of carnival games. Last year's favorites, the “Water Slide” will return.” Enroll in our Summer Reading Program by June 25 and receive 15 tickets to enjoy all the activities. Anyone who enrolls on the day of the carnival will receive 10 tickets. Our carnival is scheduled for Sunday, June 26, 2016 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. It will be held in the library staff parking lot. Over 300 submissions were received and Jeannine was 1 of the 13 presenters selected to read at the event. She read Robert Frost's poem, "The Road Not Taken." Professor Chin is d i s t i n g u i s h e d a s a n e d u c a t o r, administrator, clinician and scholar on cultural competency and women's roles in Asian minority culture. Her work on leadership, diversity and women's issues has led to a number of invitational talks and publications in these areas. Most recently she was invited to participate on the Oxford Roundtable program on women and leadership, and was designated as a Fulbright Specialist in this area.
