What is I
I-SHARe a tool supporting NRENs daily work on network services delivery Maciej Łabędzki (PSNC) Gloria Vuagnin (GARR), Marcin Wolski (PSNC) I3 Conference, Wrocław, 3rd December 2010 Innovation through participation 1 What is I-SHARe? I-SHARe stands for „Information Sharing across Heterogeneous Administrative Regions„ It is a tool for supporting the operations in a multi-domain environment Makes the co-delivery of end to end links across multiple domains: Easier More efficient Seamless Quicker Provides a shared information and tracking tool for NRENs’ operational teams. Better than email, phones. Does not automate anything but facilitates co-operation. Innovation through participation 2 What information does I-SHARe hold? Details of the customer’s requests Contact details for the responsible experts in each NREN phone numbers, email addresses, roles Key information for every domains’ demarcation points phone numbers, addresses, working hours Technical details of NNI @ of each neighbouring Demarcation Points Information about the progress of work in the other domain Check-lists Innovation through participation 3 Example scenario New link request for BIO SPACE project 1. LAB_A_IT 2. 3. Scientific laboratories LAB_A_IT and LAB_B_PL are collaborating in BIO SPACE project A 10Gb/s connection was set up in the past A backup connection has been requested (diverse path WRT the existing one) LAB_B_PL Innovation through participation 4 Example scenario GARR expert starts working with I-SHARe LAB_A_IT 1. The expert checks the existing link • looks at the route • looks at the bandwidth 2. The expert inserts basic information on the new requested link • chooses the end-sites • inserts GARR and PIONIER as connecting domains • inserts information about requested E2E link • sends an e-mail to PIONIER LAB_B_PL Innovation through participation 5 Example scenario PIONIER’s turn 1. 2. LAB_A_IT 3. 4. 5. The expert checks PIONIER information and looks at the data of the end-site located in Poland The expert writes an e-mail back to GARR The Ordering Coordinator is chosen The OC takes care about check-list maintenance The OC calls a meeting to decide a route LAB_B_PL Innovation through participation 6 Example scenario Finding a route and negotiating parameters 1. 2. LAB_A_IT 3. 3. 4. 5. User-Network-Interface (UNI) and Network-Network-Interfaces (NNI) are negotiated between endsites and domains Ordering phase ends and Setup phase starts. Set-up phase goes analogically. Experts planned a route using Cross Border Fibre SWITCH and DFN were chosen as intermediate domains The OC checks „Route finding” on the check-list LAB_B_PL Innovation through participation 7 Advantages of I-SHARe approach Central repository of information about E2E links in the multi-domain enviroment Supports people instead of automating their tasks Helpful especially when new hardware has to be installed and experts work needs to be coordinated Does not make any decisions but facilitates it. Tracks performed actions Knows actual state of the E2E link Integration with E2EMON monitoring tool Innovation through participation 8 I-SHARe software Developed by GEANT participants: PSNC, GARR, DFN, SWITCH In scope of SA2 T5 activity that works on tools supporting multidomain workflows Current version 1.0 has been implemented in GN3 Prototype version tested in several NRENs during GN2 Central Server for E2E link management (web GUI) Domain Application for registering participants standalone application a reference implementation of web services based data provider (socalled Domain Interface) Innovation through participation 9 I-SHARe software Innovation through participation 10 I-SHARe software Innovation through participation 11 Deployments Pilot deployment DFN, GARR, GEANT (DANTE), PSNC and SWITCH November 2010 – March 2011 Based on real E2E links To collect valuable feedback and develop a production-quality software Operational deployment Planned Scheduled to 2011 Ready to be deployed in MANs Each MAN acts as a separate domain Rules stay the same Innovation through participation 12 More information Project site: http://ishare.forge.geant.net Contact with authors: gn3-sa2-t5-ishare@geant.net On-line demo available On-line video tutorial available: http://cbt.geant.net/repository/gn3/ishare/I-SHARE_overview.htm Innovation through participation 13
