Steve Mortenson, Senior Superintendent of Saunders, was kind enough to show us around and discuss some of the construction methods used. It was a fun and informative tour that was finished with dinner at The Perfect Landing restaurant. Thanks to all who attended! It’s hard to believe this is my last article before our summer break. I have had a great time being the President of this chapter and would like to thank the current board members for their work and dedication. These are volunteer positions and without you our chapter would fall into disarray. It’s been a year of learning for me and I cannot wait for the National convention in July, my next term and what lies ahead. The board and I are always open to meeting and program ideas so if there is something you are interested in, please let me know. We hold these monthly programs for you, our members, and want to ensure they are topics of interest, relevance and fun. Our last events prior to break is our May 13th chapter meeting and our May 22nd golf outing. The golf outing is our last fundraiser of this year so let’s have a great showing so we can issue more college scholarships next spring! Sincerely, Stacie Flynn ASPE Denver Chapter Newsletter, Volume 13, Issue 8 Page 1 FEATURE ARTICLE Who Exactly is Someone Else? by, Chris Morton, CPE, LEED® AP T he odds are good that you may have stumbled across the obituary for “Someone Else” while cruising around the internet. This tongue-in-cheek posting, supposedly written by an unknown author, pokes fun at members of organizations that always say “let someone else” do that. However, this got me thinking about why it is we all often default to letting someone else do it. So who exactly is someone else? Someone else is that person who, in spite of being very busy, always finds time to participate and, in most cases, carry more than their fair share of the load. Someone else is just like you and me! He or she does not have super human powers nor do they have an abundant amount of spare time in Membership Statistics their life to participate. However, they do have (as of April 7, 2014) something that not all people do and that is a Current Membership Count 63 commitment to what they are doing. Our ASPE is not immune from the “let someone else” do it mentality. Each year most, if not all, of our national elections for Officers and Governors are uncontested and we often have difficulty finding members that are willing to make the commitment to being a leader of our association. And the same is true at the Chapter level, where many positions go un-filled at election time. Chapter elections are once again upon us. Will you step up to participate as an Officer, Board Member or Committee Member or will you defer to “Someone Else?” Chapter Membership Classifications: 36.51% 23 Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) 57.14% 36 Estimator (E) 0.00% 0 Associate Member (ASM) 1.59% 1 Constructor ( C) 0.00% 0 Student (S) 1.59% 1 Affiliate Member (AF) 0.00% 0 Member Emeritus (ME) So what if “Someone Else” is really dead as 0.00% 0 Honorary Member (HM) the obituaries on the internet proclaim? How 3.17% 2 Fellow (FCPE) will our ASPE survive? That is up to all of us who are members. We can choose to step up 100.00% 63 Membership and be a leader or we can sit back and hope that “Someone Else” really isn’t dead. Who exactly is “Someone Else?” Upcoming Elections Chapter 5 election ballots have been emailed to all members. Please make sure you vote!
