ASPELA Times The News of the Los Angeles Chapter of The American Society of Plumbing Engineers www.aspela.com February 2016Volume 16 Issue 2 PRESIDENT’S REPORT Bill Siler President February 2016 Date: So the start of a new year is here. I for one can’t wait to see what the New Year brings us. So your board is working on some special events for the Time: membership throughout the next year. February 3, 2016 Social - 6:00 pm Dinner - 7:00 pm We are looking at bringing back Monte Carlo night once again in conjunction with the Holiday Party. It was such a great success two years ago we thought why not try it again. I am going to look into Universal Studios for the location and hope to have this worked out in the next couple months. Our reason for having it there, is so after the party we can let you party animals lose in the park to do whatever you want to do. Should make for a nice night for everyone. We are also working on a few other ideas see below please let us know if any of them appeals to you: • Bowling Night out • The Hollywood Bowl event again • Comedy Club night • K2 karting event • Going to a Basketball game • Going to a Baseball game • Adding another family picnic at the beach These are just a few ideas, but we would love to hear from you. This is your ASPE chapter and we want to make it fun for everyone this year. DRIVE TO INCREASE ATTENDANCE We had a few new faces at our meeting last month. Legislative EDUCATION REPORT Haig Demergian, PE, CIPE V.P. Education The California regulations on Toilet, Urinal, and Faucet One Member’s Opinion were adopted on April 8, 2015 and are effective January 1, 2016. The 2015 Appliance Efficiency Regulations Registration of plumbing engineers and the Toilet, Urinal , Faucet, and Showerhead Regulations are available at: http://www.energy.ca.gov/ As you know, ASPE national is working diligently, to appliances/. prepare for application of registration for Plumbing Engineers, in all 50 States. This process will take Included in the regulations are the new standards for several years to succeed. But as the old proverb is fixtures manufactured on or after July 1, 2016: saying: “in order to move a mountain you should start with a few rocks”. 1. Lavatory faucets and aerators - 1.2 gpm at 60 psi. 2. Shower heads – 1.8 gpm at 80 psi. We envision a few “hard rocks” to conquer, but if we are united in our demand we will succeed. For fixtures sold after January 1, 2016: 1. Kitchen faucets and aerators – 1.8 gpm with optional At this time, a schedule of tasks is completed and a temporary flow of 2.2 gpm at 60 psi. “Plumbing Engineering working group” was formed 2. Public lavatory faucets and aerators – 0.5 gpm at with the main scope to prepare a college level curriculum 60 psi. and a test with questions, primarily related to Plumbing 3. ASPE NEWSPage 5 So dinner for the person you bring is on ASPE for the how this program works in the next couple months. I month that you bring them. You get them to the meetings have heard from some that this is a waste of time and then it’s everyone’s job to keep their attention after that. others that it’s not a bad idea. I would have to say we The contest is open to all members, but I suspect that probably have over 50 engineer’s designers at different one of our reps will win. This contest should favor the firms that have never been to a meeting or they have reps as they are face to face with plumbing engineers not been to a meeting in a very long time, maybe more. and contractors on a daily bases. If an engineer wins we will have something extra as a gift for them. We So why are they not coming and have not been coming have decided to give a Visa card away as well so you for years? Maybe it’s because they are not aware of can do as you wish with your winnings. ASPE, maybe they are but are not aware of what we have to offer for them? I have to say that both of these 2016 Golf Tournament issues need to be address. I will have to confess that I The flyer has been sent out at least twice since the last have two designers in my office and there’s months that meeting. We are ramping this tournament up with more we are just so busy I don’t even think about talking to emails, so please be understanding as you see multiple them about coming to the meetings until the day of the emails in the next couple months. We want to make meeting. This is my fault and I will be working on this sure this event stays on everyone’s radar. We have a and have already done so. So I guess what I am trying chance to make history with this event by having the to say is if I can allow this to happen I am sure others most attendees ever. We will not be turning anyone are as well. away. Even last minute attendees are welcome, it will just cost you more to sign up. Please see the Golf As a designer or engineer of any office it’s beneficial Tournament flyer (next page) within the newsletter for to us to get our coworkers to the meetings. By getting all info. them to the meetings it will hopefully open up a new resource for them. I would hope all the reps out there 2016 Fishing Trip can find the time to talk up ASPE when they go into the This year the fishing trip is limited to 25 people engineering offices. I understand they have a job to do maximum. The trip leaves August 24 returning the 26th. first, but what I can’t believe, is that with all the reps we See the flyer for the fishing trip and please don’t wait to have in our group that we can’t get more new people get signed up. This trip will fill up fast and I don’t want at our meetings. I really think we all are so busy we anyone to miss out on a great fishing trip. I went last don’t have the time to ask the engineers and designers year for the first time. Was a little sick the first day or to come to our meetings. Maybe we think the designer so, but had a great time otherwise. The boat hands are or engineer already knows about ASPE. I can see how first class, I can assure you of this. They spent way too that could happen you get so used to seeing them, you much time fixing my fishing rod, but never once gave think how could it be even possible they don’t know me that look you know that look. They really made me about this great organization so you just don’t bring it feel like I had been on this trip before. up. 2016 Convention Party Bus My final thought on this. I have also heard there are some So we are working on getting a party bus to take the offices that might be afraid to allow there designers to members over for this year’s convention in Phoenix. come to the meetings for fear of losing them to another The bus is open for whoever wants to use it. The only firm. Well please if you know of any place like this let thing is you might have to leave the same time the me know. I am going to make it a point to personally delegates leave. If we can get enough people interested go out to at least on engineering office that feels this in taking a second bus over we might look into this way every month until the new President takes over. I as well. The board thinks it would be fun and I was am also looking for firms that you have talked to about told national has an incentive program possibly for ASPE, but yet the designers are still not coming. I will something like this. So keep an eye out in the newsletter be visiting these offices as well. So please email me or and the website for updates. call me. continued from page 1 THE ANNUAL DONALD F. Clark, P.E. John is wrote about the design considerations must address the number of users, durability, water savings, serviceability, initial and operational costs, and have Americans Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility. The design team needs to meet with the owners to define the economic quality of the fixtures used as, “good, better and best.” Then, the facility must be designed as per the current and local Codes. In his article, he wrote about the restroom odor. All restrooms have floor drain to carry away any water overflows from a toilet, sink or urinal. The simple solutions are to have the restroom cleaners add a little water to the drain at each cleaning. Other choices are to add mineral oil to the drain water to reduce evaporation, provide trap primers, or use memory rubber trap seals. The drain location should be under a stall partition to avoid any one from peeing into the drain if the restroom is very busy. The drain trap tends to go dry over time and sewer gas contributes to odor complaints. In his conclusion, the design team should have discussions with the owner, owner’s maintenance staff, available contractors, and local code officials to define the Owner’s Project Requirements (OPR) for any certifications, cost or operational savings, and target visual goals. Settle on a level of “good, better and best” for the design, construction and operational goals. It is very interest to read and we recommend that all should read. That is all for this month. See you all in next meeting. As usual, do not hesitate to e-mail any board member for any particular topics that you may want to see in any of our technical programs.
