Today during communion, St. Gregory’s Choir will sing the motet “In nomine Jesu” by
Jacob Handl (1550-1591). Handl was born in what is modern day Slovenia. His music
reflected the aims of the Counter Reformation. The Counter Reformation was in part a
reaction against the huge complexities of liturgical music of the 1400’s. Counter
Reformation composers sought to simplify the musical textures, allowing for the words to
be clearly understood. That aim is certainly achieved in the motet we will hear today.

distributed during the week to those in need in our neighborhood. Thank you to

C O N C E R T T OD A Y
Today at 5:00 p.m. Grace Church will host a recital by Linda Jones, soprano and
Charles Weaver playing theorbo. Linda and Charlie are some of New York City’s
greatest early music performers. Their program is entitled “The Joys and Pains of
Love.” They will perform songs by John Dowland, Henry Purcell, and Barbara
Strozzi. I urge the congregation to attend and thank Linda and Charlie for sharing

CHORISTERS
The Choristers of Grace Church have been invited to sing for the Annual Diocesan
Convention on Saturday, January 31. The Choristers will rehearse today at 9:45
a.m. and will meet at Grace Church on the 31 st at 11:00 a.m.

This Friday and Saturday, January 30-31, is the Annual Diocesan Convention.
Thank you to our parish delegates, Ethelyn Bowers, Jim Cramer, and Hyacinth
McCaulay. We also have Mother Lindstrom seated at our table as a Priest Associate
of Grace Church. Pray for your delegates and thank them when you see them for
giving their time this year to represent our parish. Also a big thank y ou to the
Choristers, their parents, and Joseph Arndt, for their work on putting together the
music selection for their performance at Convention.

CANDLEMAS & PARISH DINNER
We celebrate the Feast of the Presentation, also known as Candlemas, with High
Mass on Monday, February 2 at 6:30 p.m. Candlemas remembers the presentation
of Jesus in the Temple by his parents, according to Jewish custom, forty days after
his Nativity. It is also the time when Simeon proclaims the canticle that has come
to be known as the Nunc dimittis: “Lord, you now have set your servant free to go
in peace as you have promised; for these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, whom
you have prepared for all the world to see: a light to enlighten the nations, and the
glory of your people Israel.” The nickname “Candlemas” comes from the ancient
and moving custom, which we still observe, of a blessing of and procession with
lighted candles. Please mark your calendars and join us that evening for High Mass
followed by a parish dinner.
