Biology Weekly January 22, 2015 Ask a CIANtist Did you know that... ...the Typhoon scanner does more than just DiGE? While the GE Typhoon trio scanner is located in the CIAN DiGE lab, N5/24, it can do much more than scan those pre‐labeled, multiplexed 2D protein gels. With its three lasers and seven filter cubes we can scan almost any fluorescent stain or label, at pixel sizes from 1000µm down to 10µm edge length. We even have an adaptor to hold glass slides such as the ones used in spotted microarrays. Applications that are currently carried out in the department include fluorescently labeled or stained protein gels and blots, and fluorescent detection of Western blot signals. The results are linear over a range of five orders of magnitude, which allows for quantitative data collection. Analysis software for gel and blot images is available, and support can be arranged. The machine can also serve as a backup for the phosphorimager: for this application, keep in mind that only the exposed screen, but not your radioactive sample can be brought into our lab.
