3rd Sunday in Ordinary time
Saint John Eudes
January 25, 2015
Father Gérard’s Corner
Not words, but deeds. On Sundays in Ordinary Time, the Old Testament prepares us for the Gospel.
Faithful Jews considered Nineveh beyond redemption, hopelessly pagan, utterly corrupt, impervious
to any mission or message from Israel’s God. But less than a day into Jonah’s mission—surprising
both Jonah and God—the entire populace responds not in words but in deeds: fasting and
sackcloth.
Jonah’s world, Jesus’ world, our world, and ourselves. Jesus begins his ministry at a dangerous time.
John the Baptist has been arrested, and in a less than ideal place—not John’s peaceful desert, nor
the holy city, Jerusalem, with its religiously sophisticated, spiritually committed population, but Galilee, where Jews and
Gentiles mixed at close quarters, resulting in a mix of religious observance, indifference, even conflict. In other words,
the real world, like the one we live in. Like Jonah, Jesus challenges his listeners to repentance. Like Nineveh’s population, the first disciples respond immediately because Jesus declares, “The kingdom of God is at hand”—not a place, but
a way of life—what the world would look like if we were living according to God’s gracious, saving, loving plan. Action,
here and now; not words, but deeds!
Forty days. God gave Nineveh forty days to repent. Soon our forty days, Lent, begin with Nineveh’s fasting and Jesus’
preaching: “Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Discipleship’s twofold process: leave the past, embrace the future; turn
your back on where you’ve been, and come after me. And Paul reminds us, “Time is running out!” Not words, deeds.
Fr. Gérard
J.S. Paluch
PRAYER OF THE WEEK
O God,
you call us to repentance and discipleship.
Teach us to change our hearts and follow you faithfully.
We ask for this and all these our prayers
in the name of your Son and our Lord,
Jesus Christ.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
How will Jesus’ words today move me in this coming
week to a commitment of belief and witness, compassion
and service? How can I make that commitment as
decisive and definitive as it was for Nineveh, Simon,
Andrew, James, and John?
POPE FRANCIS’ INTENTIONS FOR JAN.
Christmas, hope for humanity:
That the birth of the Redeemer may bring peace and
hope to all people of good will.
Parents:
That parents may be true evangelizers, passing on to
their children the precious gift of faith.
PRAYER FOR PRIESTS
Please pray for the following priests this week:
Jan 25 Rev. Walter Paredes, Mary Immaculate, Pacoima
WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE
In 1997, Pope John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for
women and men in consecrated life. This celebration is
attached to the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on
February 2nd. This Feast is also known as Candlemas
Day; the day on which candles are blessed symbolizing
Christ who is the light of the world. So too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect light of Jesus Christ to all
peoples. The celebration of World Day for Consecrated
Life is transferred to the following Sunday, February 8th
in order to highlight the gift of consecrated persons for the
whole Church.
Please pray for all those who have made commitments in
the consecrated life, and be sure to thank them on their
special day. May they continue to be inspired by Jesus
Christ and respond generously to God's gift of their vocation.
Jan 26 Rev. Julio Ramos Ortega, St. Joseph The
Worker, Winnetka
Jan 27 Rev. Nicolas Sanchez, C.P.C.R., St. Francis de

BLESSED JUNIPERO SERRA
GET ON THE BUS
In a press conference on January 15th on the airplane to
the Philippines, Pope Francis announced that he intends
to canonize Blessed Junipero Serra, OFM, when he
comes to the United States next September.
Get On The Bus Needs Your Help!
For more information, please go to the SJE website at:
www.sjeparish.net
We have a bus – Bus S and we have the children. Now
all we need is your support to get these mothers and their
children united for one day!
This year we have twenty-three mothers who have asked
that their children be allowed to ride the bus with their
caregivers to visit them at Central California Women’s
Facility in Chowchilla, CA.
Through your generosity and that of our ministries here at
St. John Eudes, we will take a bus full of eager children
to see their moms on the Friday before Mother’s Day.
We are asking you, the parishioners of St. John Eudes,
to, once again, help sponsor our bus, Bus S, with monetary donations. Without the donations from parishes such
as ours, we would never be able to offer these children
this wonderful opportunity.
We will be here next weekend to speak with you about
our program.

DID YOU KNOW?
How to Report Inappropriate or Illegal
Content on the Internet
One of the main reasons that children do
not report the inappropriate content they find
online is fear of punishment from parents. If you let them
know that it is not their fault if they come across an inappropriate site, they will be more willing to come to you
when it happens. If your children ever show you a site
that contains illegal behavior, such as pornographic images of children, contact your Internet service provider and
the CyberTipline at www.cybertipline.com.

ORACION DE LA SEMANA
Dios nuestro,
que nos llamas al arrepentimiento y al
discipulado.
