Key Job Responsibilities: ■Check laboratory results to identify cryptococcal antigen (CrAg)-positive patients ■Obtain consent and interview / review medical records of CrAg-positive patients ■Complete case report forms by interview and/or record review and submit to the Field Project Coordinator for review ■Monitor the treatment, progress and outcome of CrAg-positive patients by collecting the following information: treatment with fluconazole or amphotericin B, availability and acceptability of lumbar puncture, timeliness of antifungal therapy and ART initiation, adverse events, and outcome (development of cryptococcal meningitis, death, loss to follow-up) ■Keep patients records securely to maintain confidentiality ■Compile regular statistics related to the screening programme, i.e create reports from monthly aggregate clinic register data (number of CrAg-positive patients, number started, continued, or stopped treatment, number died, number lost to follow –up, and number developed CM & availability of fluconazole at the facility ■Liaise with facility staff members to ensure that the programme runs smoothly ■Assist with GERMS-SA by collecting information from patients admitted with cryptococcal meningitis ■Assist to produce quarterly reports for programme ■Manage project nurses who are employed for M&E ■Complete other tasks related to the screening programme as requested by line manager. Key Job Responsibilities: ■ Be the contact person from the site and be fully aware and accountable for all projects running at that site ■Supervise the site surveillance officers so that there is integration of staff and projects to ensure that services are continually provided and projects are running optimally ■Fully involved with the surveillance and research work at local sites ■Advise the surveillance team with GERMS-SA/CRDM related queries (if necessary) and take responsibility for the site communication and getting the surveillance team to deal with queries timeously ■Enforce that surveillance team check site case report forms for consistency and accuracy before submission to NICD ■Enforce good systems for surveillance officers including organisation and filing of documents ■Assist on site visits and assist with surveillance officer audits in order to maintain the integrity of the program ■Assist with organizing and running surveillance officer meetings to ensure that feedback and training is given regularly ■Assist with or compile surveillance reports as required by stakeholders ■Assist with obtaining ethics approval and local/provincial permissions for surveillance and research projects in order to ensure that research and surveillance is carried out with permission and ethically ■Update existing GERMS-SA/CRDM site SOPs (when necessary) and write new SOPs to ensure that best practice guidelines are maintained. CENTRE FOR ENTERIC DISEASES MICROBIOLOGY DIVISION MEDICAL SCIENTIST (FIXED-TERM CONTRACT – 12 MONTHS) (PAY ZONE DEPENDS ON EXPERIENCE) SALARY RANGE (R165 382.00pa – R330 046.00pa) REF: NICDCDC0115/001-05(98100.001.9014) The candidate will be involved in the phenotypic characterization and molecular epidemiological analysis of bacterial enteric pathogens; a project which forms part of multi country typhoid fever surveillance program in Sub-Saharan Africa. Key Job Responsibilities: ■Phenotypic characterization of bacterial enteric pathogens ■Molecular epidemiological characterization of bacterial enteric pathogens ■Genotyping of bacterial enteric pathogens using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis and multiple-locus variable-number tandem-repeats analysis (MLVA) ■Establishment and maintenance of a database of records for bacterial enteric pathogens ■Establishment and maintenance of a BioNumerics DNA fingerprint (PFGE patterns) database for bacterial enteric pathogens ■Comparison of DNA fingerprint patterns to international databases including the PulseNet International global database ■Whole genome sequencing analysis of bacteria ■Assist with routine molecular laboratory testing at CED ■Analysis and troubleshooting of laboratory results ■Reporting of laboratory results at regular departmental meetings ■Preparation of reports ■Preparations of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals ■Assist in activities relating to laboratory quality assurance ■Presentations at CED journals clubs ■Presentations at NICD research forums and academic days ■Assist in training courses and teaching activities offered by the CED ■Represent the CED at NICD and NHLS meetings ■Represent the CED at national and international scientific meetings.
