150163 - Let's Play Classcraft for Classroom Engagement!
Roy R. Rodriguez (rrodriguez@csisd. org) TCEA 2015 February 4th, 2015 www.classcraft.com What if school was incredibly fun? Classcraft brings modern game mechanics into any classroom, transforming it into a collaborative, immersive adventure. "Classcraft is like Class Dojo meets World of Warcraft." - Timonious Downing, 7th Grade English/Language Arts, Capitol Heights, Maryland The Power of Gaming • 59% of Americans play video games • 48% of gamers are women • 58% of parents play video games with their kids • Good games create an experience that gets people coming back for more How can we use this pervasive and engaging cultural phenomenon to redesign and supercharge the learning experience? In Classcraft, students play in teams as mages, warriors or healers for the year. Increasing Student Motivation Each of the three character classes has unique benefits. By behaving well, students can acquire new powers and privileges while trying to avoid real consequences for themselves and their teammates! "When I started Classcraft, my AP Biology scores were in the C range. The average increased to an A in a month." — Rebecca Osborne, Biology, Anaheim, California Fostering Meaningful Collaboration 1. Mike loses all his HP and falls in battle. • Collaboration is essential in today’s workplace • Classcraft is designed so teams live and die together 2. His whole team takes damage as a result of his actions. • Students’ powers are complementary and interdependent • On the right is an example of how collaboration in Classcraft can elevate a whole team. 4. In the process, Jane helps herself, gaining XP for doing a good action, which helps her gain more powers / privileges. 3. Jane tutors Mike to help him so the team can succeed and avoid future consequences. "My students' attitudes have completely changed: They're cheering each other on, and kids who weren't friendly before are eager to help their teammates." — Amy Tucker, Language Arts, 7th & 8th Grade, Auburn, Maine Improving Class Behavior • With Classcraft, what’s expected in a class is crystal clear. Follow class rules and get rewarded; don’t and get penalized. • Because the game’s rules are the class rules, the responsibility of classroom discipline shifts from teacher to the game. • With their fates interconnected, students work together to keep one another in line. • This has dramatic effects on classroom behavior and frees up a ton of time so teachers can do what they do best: teach! "Classcraft saved my classroom! My class immediately changed behaviorally and academically after implementing it in my courses." — Roy Rodriguez, Public Speaking, Theatre & Debate, Grades 9-12, College Station, Texas My Classcraft Experience ● ● ● ● Kotaku Article First group of 10 beta testers internationally Tested with 2 on level classes Changes! My Classroom ● Students caught on after they saw reward from game ● It spread through the rest of my classes, students were asking for it ● Now it’s how I run my classes ● http://www.classcraft. com/testimonials/ ● My Students’ Response ● They respect the games rules which helped with classroom behavior because I was not the one enforcing discipline, the game was. ● Student’s grades went up ● Learned to collaborate with each other on a daily basis despite not always liking one another. ● They got a bit more competitive ● Learned strategic thinking ● Because they were now playing and actively learning when they came to my classes, they really started to enjoy coming to class.
