Birthday Treats and Snacks
SPASD Wellness Policy JHK
states: To ensure proper hygiene
and due to food allergies, foods
which are served or provided in
the classroom must be purchased, NOT HOMEMADE, and be in a wrapper which contains nutrition
information and expiration date.
Daily Snacks:
Just a reminder that most of our classrooms offer a
snack time during the school day. Please remember
to send your child with a snack if possible.
Don’t forget to senD hats, gloves, mittens and snow pants for recess!!!! The
children will go outside unless temperatures reach 0 degree!
Just a few friendly reminders to our Horizon families....
.
It's that time of year! There have been numerous cases of Strep throat and Influenza at our school
and in the district. If your student complains of having a sore throat, headache, difficulty swallowing
and/or has a fever of 100.0 or higher, please keep them home. Calls will be made to pick up your
child if they come to the office with these symptoms.
Please continue to send in healthy snacks for your child. String cheese and yogurt are great
choices with higher protein to keep them full longer!
**We could still use more sweatpants in the nurses office! Please send in any color or size, they will be
used! Thank you in advance and have a safe and warm Winter break!
Thank you and if you have any questions, please contact Nurse Lemley at 608-834-7906.
OPEN ENROLLMENT
Wisconsin’s public school open enrollment program
allows parents to apply for their children to attend school
in another school district other than the one in which they live.
The open enrollment application period for the
2015-2016 school year is February 2, 2015 - April 30, 2015.
Parents can apply online at http://oe.dpi.wi.gov/.
Online applications are recommended. However, paper applications may be printed from the Wisconsin Department of Public
Instruction website and delivered to the Sun Prairie School District Office at 501 S. Bird Street no later than April 30, 2015 by
4:00 pm.
You can find open enrollment information on the Sun Prairie Area School District website by going to the District tab and then
clicking on Business Services. The link is: http://www.sunprairie.k12.wi.us/oe_info201314.cfm.
If you have questions regarding open enrollment, please contact Lisa Sprindis, Business Services, at (608) 834-6511; or email:
lasprin@sunprairieschools.org.
For the first couple of weeks in January, we will be talking about teeth and dental care. After
that, we will start a unit that focuses on using medicine safely, poison, and the effects of tobacco and alcohol. If you would like more information concerning any of these topics go to
www.kidshealth.org.
For the safety of your child(ren), please talk with them about your expectations concerning medicine
and drugs in your home.
In January, we will be reviewing expectations while playing low organized games and beginning our
gymnastics unit. Students will be working on rolling, balancing, traveling and cooperative skills on many
types of equipment. If the weather cooperates, our older students will be experiencing outdoor movement
and games while wearing snowshoes.

Yahara
The final revisions are being made on submissions for the Yahara River Writers Contest.
We have some wonderful poems and editorials this year. The submissions will be headed
to the district on January 9th for the 1st round of judging. Submissions chosen on the January 9th will be submitted to the Greater Dance County-Advanced Learners Network for final
Judging on the 29th. Good luck to all our writers.
Math 24
Math 24 is underway! I have 2 wonderful parent volunteers that are supervising groups on
Wednesdays. This year we are holding Math 24 during lunch recess. In years past Math 24
has been held during lunch. If you child is interested in participating in Math 24 please remind them that Math 24 is held during lunch recess. The Math 24 meet will be on March 4 th
in the morning. There will be two 4th graders and two 5th graders invited to participate. Students are selected based on their scores during the Math 24 Club meetings on Wednesdays.
College for Kids
College for Kids is a summer enrichment opportunity offered to our high achieving 5 th grade
students. It is a 3 week camp offered on the UW campus. Students are exposed to a broad
range of challenging academic areas, career options, and new areas of interest. If your student is invited to apply you will receive a letter after break. There is an application process
and a project that will need to be submitted. All this information will be in the letter.
