For several years I’ve been using the phrase “rugged and radiant” in
my praying for our church. God, please make us both “rugged and
radiant.” Recent days have reminded us that we do indeed need to
possess real spiritual toughness. Following Jesus in this world has
not been easy, and we should not expect it to get easier. Ease is
coming in the New Heavens and the New Earth. Until then we will
need to have the biblical qualities of endurance and perseverance,
taking up the exhortation to “stand firm”. Meditate on these words
that Paul wrote to the Corinthians:
“Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men,
be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.”
(1 Corinthians 16:13–14, NASB95)
This is an important word for us today in our context. We need to be
strong, not weak. We need to be resolute, not compromising. Simultaneously, we need to maintain hearts full of love. We must have
hearts of growing compassion for those without Christ. My prayer is
that our toughness will be matched by our tenderness toward those
apart from Him. May our sincere faith be both unshakeable and attractive, causing others to desire to know Christ as we do.
Would you join me in praying this way for our entire church body, as
well as your own life? “God, please make us rugged and radiant!
Make us strong and beautiful witnesses for You! May our neighbors
see the strength we have in You and be drawn to You for eternal
life!”
Loving you!
Jim

Lamb’s Basket
Consider loving and helping those in need at
Lamb's Basket, a local food pantry located at
8419 Oakview Avenue, Henrico, 23228:
Help Stock Shelves:
Help Distribute Food:
Monday, Feb. 2 (10:00 AM - 1:00 PM)
Tuesday, Feb. 10 (9:30 AM - 1:00 PM)
All non-perishable foods are needed, as well as paper and plastic
grocery bags with handles. Thank you for your donations!
Partnership with Johnson Elementary
Our church has adopted Johnson Elementary for the 2014-2015
school year. Here is a way to show the love of Christ to those in
this school community.
Collecting immediately for the clinic - extra boys and girls
new or gently-used clothes; NEW underwear (pre-K up to
2nd grade), shirts and elastic or adjustable waist pants (pre-K
through 5th grade).
A marked bin is located in the foyer for donations. THANK YOU for
helping to brighten the school year for local children in need.
Delhi, India Trip
A team of six is being recruited for a prayer walking
trip to Delhi, India, March 27 – April 5, 2015. Delhi is
a huge mega-city of more than 15 million people, home
to hundreds of unreached unengaged people groups. It
is a city of contrasts—a mixture of rich and poor, powerful and marginalized—people from every language
and religious group found across the vast Indian subcontinent. This team will partner with and encourage
Bonnie and assist the Delhi team by prayer walking
specific neighborhoods: learning to pray strategically,
looking for persons of peace, and following the Spirit’s
prompting to share the
Good News of Jesus
Christ with those whose
hearts are already open.
Please prayerfully consider whether God is leading
you to participate in this
ministry opportunity.

A Message from Associate Pastor for Children and Families
Tommy Knighten
Flowers don’t last, movies fade into memory, and great dates are over in a flash. Why not honor Valentine’s Day this year
with something that has a long-term benefit for your marriage and God’s glory?
This Valentine’s weekend, consider an investment for your marriage. Your marriage and the marriages around you are
colored by personalities, passions, and experience. Making marriage work is a divinely inspired art form. The Art of
Marriage is a video-based marriage conference helping couples understand God's blueprint for marriage, facilitated by
pastors and couples from Staples Mill Road Baptist Church. The Art of Marriage weaves together expert teaching, engaging
stories, man-on-the street interviews, humorous vignettes, and much more to portray both the challenges and the beauty
of God’s design.
The Art of Marriage® consists of six video sessions that include topics such as the purpose of marriage, the natural drift
towards isolation for couples, the different responsibilities for men and women in marriage, the conflict that is common to
all marriages, God’s creation of sex and its wonderful design, and the hope in our marriage of a godly legacy for future
generations.
The Art of Marriage isn’t just a recording of one or two speakers at a marriage conference. This unique video event
features over forty experts who share from personal experience as well as biblical training, including Dr. Voddie Baucham,
Jr., Bryan Carter, Dr. Michael Easley, Dr. Wayne Grudem, Dr. Dave Harvey, Mary Kassian, Bryan Loritts, Dr. Crawford Loritts,
Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr., Dr. Russell D. Moore, Dr. Tim Muehlhoff, Barbara Rainey, Dennis Rainey, Bobby Scott, and Paul
David Tripp.

“Prior to this weekend, we were really struggling. After 25 years of marriage, we were at breaking point. A week
ago, this course seemed like a ‘make it or break it weekend.’ It has been invaluable. We have recommitted to our
marriage and divorce is no longer an option!” — couple testimonial

Dear Church Family and Friends,
Thank you, so much, for the many visits,
calls, cards, and most especially the prayers and caring concern for/to mom in the
past few months. She has been encouraged and uplifted by each contact and
truly appreciates each one. She has
healed from her fall, and her general health is good. She
hopes to get to church again soon, but appreciates your continued prayers for strength and encouragement. She prays
daily for her friends and family.
God Bless,
Mrs. Urtie Nolan and family
************************************************
To our dear family,
Over the past months during John’s cancer diagnosis and
subsequent treatments the never ending cards, meals,
prayers and emotional support for both John and Marianne have been overwhelming.
We are so blessed and to say thank you seems so little for
how much you have given - but we thank you anyway!
We give God the glory for a miraculous healing and continue to have faith for future good health.

Celebrate Recovery
Thursday Nights at 7:00 pm
Fellowship Hall
Everyone knows someone who deals with hurts on
some level but there is hope and a way to move beyond and experience the healing liberty of Christ.
Celebrate Recovery is an ongoing program that implements a Christ-centered recovery ministry based
on eight principles from the Beatitudes. You can
start at any time. This program is a fellowshipbased and proven program that lets people discover
new dignity, strength, joy, and growth in the image
of Christ. Join us for weekly worship, discussion and
fellowship as we grow spiritually to become free in
Christ. Child care is available.
Reaching in Love Update
Through December 2014 (2 years into the Reaching in Love capital campaign), we remain on track against our commitments. We’ve received $509,147 or 71% of total pledges and have a balance in the building fund of $1,087,175. Praise God and thank you for your continued prayer and financial support!
We continue to have 144 commitments for a total of $712,725 (~$1,650 per commitment, per year). If you haven’t made a commitment to
the campaign, it’s not too late as you can join in for the final year of this campaign. You can pick up an information packet in the foyer or
request one from the church office, complete the commitment card and return it to the office. If you’d like to give without making a long
term commitment that’s fine, you can use your regular offering envelopes and designate to Reaching in Love (Building Fund).
With gratitude,
Chris Martin, Reaching In Love Program Lead
