What is FITNAH ?

young British and Middle Eastern a second chance.

The 2 Ways
In FITNAH we have chosen for our
investigation four young Muslims
(age 16-20) from various parts of
the UK to go into a journey to the
Middle East (the origin of their
roots) and search for the real
essence of Islam. These characters
have diverse attitudes towards
understanding Islam. Four of them
are on the edge between radical
Islam and anti-Islam. This is their
journey in search of the real
identity of Islam and what it is to
be a Muslim today.
The question is:
On the other side, we have chosen
for the investigation other four
young Muslims (same age group) from
various parts of the Middle East to
go into a journey to the UK to be
exposed and projected to Islam in
the West and to how British Muslims
live and practice Islam.
The Journey aims to change the
radical anti-West views and
perceptions these young Muslims
have, with a hope to solve their
extremist views and change them
into moderate and tolerate Muslims.
?
Is there a way in the middle? Can the moderate
mentors and inspirational individuals change
and make the moderate youths?
3
Scenario/Process
APPROACH
The program will take the form of a personal and private exploration,
a religious, cultural, political and personal journey of discovery,
through a series of interviews and events.
With the help and the coaching of the mentors, the characters will
travel through Middle East and the UK, exploring the world of modern
Islam in search of a new and modern middle way.

The Journey
EPISODE 1
The first challenge:
Confronting the entrenched forces of inhibition
to change.
Synopsis
FITNAH’S mission begins with a glance back to
the 70’s and 80’s, at the peak of the Islamist
extremist views in Egypt.
Featuring
The most famous and the longest serving
Islamist prisoners: Abood and Tarek El-Zomor,
Jehan Al Sadat, The Egyptian uprising facebook
hero, Wael Ghonim.
Questions to be explored
After 40 years of incarceration, are Prisoners,
similar to the protagonist of the film the
“Shawshank Redemption”, incapable of dealing
with the reality that surrounds them, or is a
dialogue with today’s Arab youth possible?
Will it be possible for today’s youth to cross
this time-warp?

A JOURNEY OF CHALLENGING
RELIGIOUS EXTREMISM
The journey of a group of
Muslim youths, in search
of a middle road through
MODERN ISLAM
2011 has been a year of momentous change in the Middle East. Calls for freedom have ringed out from the
barricades of Tahrir Square to the battlefields of Tripoli. However at the same time many divergent,
destructive and archaic views especially of the Islamic extremists have risen again to the surface, but
one critical, unanswered question hangs in air: What is the future of extremism in the region in the
light of the change? Are we facing a “unique” threat from a generation of home-grown terrorists?
Is extremism expected to blight the Western world for years to come and “will not go away anytime soon”?
