The paper is distributed free through its advertisers and selected tourist information centers, but subscriptions are offered at $18 per year (P&H), single copy $3. The Country Register Story The Country Register began in Arizona in 1988 to provide effective and affordable advertising for shops, shows and other experiences enjoyed by a kindred of readership. Since then, the paper has spread to many other areas, all of which are listed below. Look for the paper in your travels. To receive a sample paper from another area, mail $3 in the USA or $4 in Canada to that area’s editor. Advertising rates area available upon request. If there is not a paper in your state and you are interested in publishing a paper, contact the editor the Arizona paper at 602-942-8950. The Country Register is available at the shops that advertise and often at other unique locations. We hope you enjoy this bi-monthly publication and let the advertisers know. USA Hello Everyone! This week my husband uttered those words I hadn’t heard for awhile... “I’ll be at the golf course!” Aaah - music to my ears! It’s a sure sign that spring is finally and really here. We’ve been teased a couple of times, but now it’s really here! Golf is Doug’s favorite pasttime, so he’s happy. I’m happy too - my spring days are spent at flea markets and gatherings, gardening, checking out the new merchandise at my favorite shops and exploring new shops from those who advertise in this paper. Another favorite of both of us is watching our grandkids, Zack and Lexi, play ball. Lots of games on the schedule for this spring and summer! We’ve also become big fans of farmers markets. Many communities host farmers market once a month or some every weekend. This is a great way to obtain fresh produce and other goodies for your family. (Check out the story on Olde Worthington’s Farmers Market on page 23.) Thanks for picking up this copy of The Country Register - we’ve got a lot packed into this issue - many shows and events listed on page 3, a book giveaway, recipes, quick tips and lots of shops listing their spring open houses and special events. When you attend any of these events or visit any of the shops who advertise with us, be sure to thank them for bringing The Country Register to you. Enjoy your spring! The Country Register In Your Mailbox? We Can Do That... SUBSCRIPTIONS The Country Register is distributed as a complimentary gift from its advertisers, and we encourage you to stop by your favorite shop every two months to pick up your new copy. However, for the convenience of those who may not be able to get to a shop, we do offer subscriptions for $18.00 per year (Continental U.S.) to cover the cost of postage and handling. Of Purpose and Spirit Denise and Chuck McCamy are now into their fifth year of designing and selling a line of country primitive greeting cards under the name “Of Purpose and Spirit.” Their joint efforts combine Denise's passion for early things and Chuck's interest in photography. Denise was always drawn to old pieces. “Maybe it was the time I spent on my grandma's farm while growing up. The old cookstove off the kitchen with the woodbox nearby… a simpler way of life where things were worn from being used day after day.” Chuck's love of flying has always been his passion. In 2001, he started flying ultralights, which led him to start taking pictures of what he saw while up in the air. He took to learning as much as he could about digital photography and computers on his own and started making over-size aerial photos. Meeting one another in 2005, they soon combined their talents, which led to creating the greeting cards. Many antique collectors and dealers allow them to photograph their homes which reflect much earlier times. They are truly thankful for the opportunity to share through pictures their love of country primitives. Of Purpose and Spirit has published scenes from many Ohio homes. They are also licensed through Crossroads Original Designs of Bucyrus, Ohio, who uses their photography in selling framed prints, candles with picture labels, calendars, and other products. The Country Register, May/June 2011 - Millersburg - Walnut Creek TASTY EVENT FOR QUILTERS Twelve Northeast Ohio quilt shop owners have come together to offer a ‘taste’ of their craft to attendees of the Quilters’ Fling “Sweet Treats Quilt Shop Hop.” Participants will collect a quilt block pattern, a recipe card and a tasty treat plus the opportunity to win prizes from each quilt shop in this fun fifth annual quilting event. The Sweet Treats Quilt Shop Hop will run from Saturday, April 23 to Saturday, May 7, 2011. At their first stop, participants will receive a free passport which they will get stamped at all the shops they visit. The shops have designed exciting projects based on the different quilt block “recipes” available at each shop. Attendees with completed passports will receive a free recipe box in which to store their block patterns and recipes, or other small quilting supplies. They will also be eligible to win door prizes, gift baskets and gift certificates. Sat 10-6, Sun 12-4 Random Acts by Maranda Jones The reunion shirts proudly say “Property of the Lennington Family,” representing this year's sports theme and of course, our family, our team. It has been said over and over again that when we work together as a team, everyone achieves more. With our team this is a fact. We eat more, we laugh more, and we remember more… I remember riding with Aunt Rita and Uncle Larry in their van to watch Lance play basketball. We had stopped along the way to get shirts in his school's colors. He must have been a valuable player if we all needed to wear black and gold. It made me feel important too, even though I was just sitting in the stands, cheering him on. I could not tell you if they won or lost that particular game, but I do remember Lance's commitment to his team. I also remember his winning free throw, celebrated with a move that my sister and I imitated for years. I remember my cousin Lee trying to sleep on the way home from that same basketball game and how hard I tried to keep him awake. He must have been so annoyed at me, but he never uttered one unkind word. I remember Lee's patience. He practiced it often with my sister and me, for we were always trying to tag along with our favorite comedian. Lee ordered fries at the bank's drive-up window, and I giggled until I snorted. He drove around town testing his automatic garage door opener on his neighbors' doors. He took us to Dairy Queen, taught us new games, and offered us spare change to take new risks. Sarah finally earned a couple of quarters going down the twisty slide alone, but we let him keep his money when he offered strange foods inside Oreo cookies. Lee was always a coach. I remember helping Mom make cookies and sending care packages to Todd at Kansas State University. On one trip to visit him, my Grandma Lois got a speeding ticket, which gave us a slight delay of game. We gave Aunt Shirley and Uncle Don the play-by-play, once we arrived, Todd wanted a replay too while he helped me with puzzles in my book. I remember Todd's attention to detail. On another trip to KSU, Todd accompanied us roller skating, and my Grandma Lois broke her arm. I remember Todd's care, but I don't remember my grandma taking any more trips to KSU. I remember Steve taking trips to spend weekends with us after he moved to Denver. He loved to play games and drive us around in his Jeep. He helped Mom and Dad with projects around the house and always told stories that made us laugh. On one trip Steve brought me a sketch pad and colored pencils, which meant the world to me. I remember Steve's thoughtfulness. He had taken the time to get to know me and was encouraging my interest. Everyone on our team has a position to play, a function in our family. We are not defined by these roles, and sometimes we take on more than one. Sometimes we are the coach and sometimes we are the challenger. We are not professional athletes, for we are amateurs at best. We all play for the same team, a family that's been blessed. I thought this was fun and wanted to share it with you. I know that using color in our homes can be challenging and kind of scary sometimes. To help you figure out what color palettes will best suit your personality, try the following personality quiz. What Is Your Design Personality? You're making big plans for the weekend. A vast, audacious project was commissioned. Satellite pictures of Cork, that tracked the movement of people and cars on the streets, were transformed into knitting patterns. Weather records dictated the hues of the yarns chosen. A relay of fifty people worked for a year creating a gigantic work that served to evoke the experience of walking through Cork. The Knitting Map project was accomplished with 2500 knitters from 22 different countries. The interweaving of technological resources with traditional craftsmanship to create a work of joyous celebration was unprecedented. Natural dyes sourced from flora and fauna are high on the list of preferred worldwide coloring agents. Chemical dyes are also widely available to produce your desired color choices. Mordants are often used in conjunction with both types of dyeing materials to assist the color to 'bite in' to the fibre and create a strong chemical bond. The knowledgeable dyer understands that a high level of caution is required to handle these sometimes toxic substances. Dyeing is an art as old as history. Blue has been produced for centuries using Woad, a spinach-like plant found in backyards and fields. This dye material is favored by dyers of wool and cotton. In its modern technological application, it is considered to be a possible material for use in production of blue ink-jet cartridges. The Common Madder plant naturally grows in Africa and temperate parts of Asia and America. Madder produces roots up to a meter 14 long, which are ground up and used for red dyes. Natural red dye can also be produced from Cochineal, a tiny sucking beetle that lives on the leaves of theprickly pear cactus. Yellow can be obtained from processing readily available onion skins or marigolds from your backyard. Yellow-dyed yarns and fabrics have been found to be less light-fast than those colored with other natural dyes. Any color on the spectrum can be produced from these three primaries in combination with each other in different proportions. Dyers of natural fibers - wool, cotton and silk - favor using natural dyes to maintain the organic integrity of their finished products. Why not cyber-surf on over to www.hwsda.org to the website of the Hand Weavers, Spinners & Dyers of Alberta to see some splendid textile work from the artists belonging to one of Alberta's oldest fibre arts guilds? I've got only (fill in number) grandchildren. Who else would I make them for? What's the point?” Well, I have news for them: quilts as gifts need not be confined to small grandchildren and their parents. These grandchildren grow up. They will graduate from high school, and maybe from university. They will marry. They will celebrate anniversaries. They will have children of their own. All these rites of passage call for celebratory quilts which will be special one-of-a-kind mementos for years to come. I know one grandmother who, thinking she may not be here to see all her grandchildren married, has made wedding quilts for them in advance. Talk about paying it forward! Special friends have special occasions too. And what's wrong with making one or more quilts for yourself to match home décor or to snuggle under while watching TV? Local charities and causes can be supported by donations of quilts to money-raising raffles, to children's hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses, to local authorities which apprehend children from abusive or drug-infested homes (often the children leave with only the clothing they are wearing), to Victim Services, to organizations which help the homeless, to women's and youth shelters… A certain generosity of spirit is required to make and donate quilts to strangers; quilters embody this generosity in abundance. These positive, generous people do much to allay some of the misery in this world, and, on a personal note, these are the kinds of people I most wish to associate with. There are people and countries in need of the physical and emotional benefits represented by gifts of quilts. Think New Zealand and Japan. In the last few months quilters in North America have received requests from fellow quilters in both these countries for quilt blocks and completed quilts. Gladly and promptly sent, these quilts represent concern and love for earthquake and tsunami victims. Donors receive personal satisfaction, knowing it is better to give than receive, and recipients reap not only physical comfort, but the emotional benefit of knowing someone cares. Some churches finance numerous projects near and far through annual auctions of donated quilts, some of which sell for thousands of dollars. People who love animals and lots of quilters do sew up otherwise-unusable scraps and unloved (why did I ever buy that?) fabric to make cushions and mats for humane shelters. Lastly, some might-be quilters question the expense they may incur. True, the quilting habit can be expensive. It can also be almost free. One can spend several hundred dollars on a single quilt or nothing at all except time. Many organizations and quilting guilds receive new donated fabrics. Local churches, guilds and individuals have also contributed their time, materials and skills to produce quilts for causes too numerous to list. Recycling and re-purposing fabric (See Bonnie K. Hunter's books Leaders and Enders and Scraps and Shirttails: Re-use, Re-purpose, Recycle! The Art of Quilting Green, Kansas City Star Books) are other ways to make inexpensive quilts that, incidentally, are good for the environment. So if you are a quilting might-wanna-be, what are you waiting for? Who wouldn't want to become part of a large company of generoushearted, positive people who contribute to the well-being of the world and its people? Can you think of a more constructive occupation? ©Barbara Conquest, BlueSky Quilting, Tofield, Alberta, Canada ohiocountryregister.com 21 - Lebanon - Tipp City - Making Life Rich Without Any Money Stories of Finding Joy in What Really Matters Grammy’s Collectible Treasures A Unique Primitive & Country Collectible Shop Join us in May for those last minute Mother’s Day gifts. When I travel to other parts of the country, I answer the question, “Where are you from?” with, “Arizona.” Because so many Arizona residents are transplants from other parts of the country, when you're asked the same question within the boundaries of our state, you generally answer with where you were born and raised. In my case, that's a small town in the Chicago suburbs. Recently, I was teaching a class in Prescott, Arizona. My students were learning my fabric painting techniques. We were having a great time and, in addition to painting, getting to know each other. One of the students asked where I was from. Being within the confines of Arizona, I answered that I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. “What suburb?” asked another student and I responded with the name of my home town, Broadview. Turns out, Broadview was her home town as well. It didn't take too many minutes for us to discover that not only did we share the same home town, but for a brief period we were next door neighbors. Ann, my painting student, was going off to college when my family moved in; I was just a year old. To deepen the connections of our past, Ann's mother was my beloved kindergarten teacher. I don't use the word “beloved” lightly; I truly loved her mother and remember many things about my time as her student. I shared with Ann my memories of her mother, who passed away in her 90s over well over ten years ago. I remember picking flowers from our garden to take to school for my teacher. Terrified that bees would bother me as I carried the flowers, I coerced my mother into boxing them. Teacher had lovely white hair, which I recognize now was certainly “prematurely grey.” She took full advantage of her striking appearance, wearing clothing in pastel shades of lilac, blue, and pink. She played the piano, teaching us simple songs. In those days, children didn't go to preschool. Kindergarten was traumatic for many of us; it was the first time we were separated from our mothers and homes. She made that transition painless and set me on the path of loving school and learning, a path I've stayed on my entire life. Without shame, I confess that I cried almost all the way home from that teaching engagement. I couldn't wait to call my mother and share this amazing experience with her. Who could have predicted that, thousands of miles and many year separated from my home town, I would be able to tell my beloved kindergarten teacher's daughter how much her mother meant to me? Truly, I feel very blessed. I also realize that, without quilting, I would have never had this experience. Quilting brings people together in amazing ways. Although there are over 21 million quilters in America, there can be no doubt that it's a small world! ©Barbara Polston, Phoenix, AZ, April 2011 Barbara Polston is a writer by vocation. You can see Barbara's quilts, join her on facebook, or contact her at www.barbarapolston.com. My husband tries to convince me that I’m paying for them to advertise by using the bags with their logos, and I could easily use one of the zillion tote bags I already own. I just smile; I love these bags! Shamefully, it’s not even the green nature of using them that I like - it’s the sheer variety. Shapes, sizes, colors, prints - I love them all. I keep them in the car so that I have them ready anytime I want to run in to the store for something. I keep my son’s sports equipment in a large one. I have one that I use to go to the gym. I have an insulated one that is just right for drinks and snacks on the run. The best part of these nifty bags is that they are so affordable. Usually less than $1.99, it’s not a tragedy if one gets lost or left behind, and hopefully someone else will find it and use it as much as I do. Pick up one or two the next time you see one you like - you’ll be a bag lady, too! © Susan Tipsord 2011 Give your front door a fresh new look for spring. Happy Spring to my Country Register friends, The calendar says Spring and yesterday the weather cooperated with a beautiful warm and sunny day that made me go outdoors and of course I had to go exploring. It was the perfect day to visit another wonderful shop I found in my Country Register. The daffodils in my garden are in full bloom and I just couldn't stay indoors so any longer so off to Milan Ohio I went to check out a Country Register Country Square. I love the Country Squares in the back of the Country Register. They and are always filled with wonderful shops and shows and I visited one that you absolutely have to add to your next trip. We are so blessed to have these truly unique shops here in Ohio. It is so not the mall shopping experience. Forget the box stores and support the shops you read about in the Country Register. The Gatherings was my destination and was full and I mean full of the most wonderful small primitive items and antiques. There is truly something for anyone who loves that primitive touch at the Gatherings in Milan, Ohio. You have to take your time and look at each and every vignette or you will miss Sandy's fabulous talent of display and design. Her choices are delightful from the antiques to wonderful gift ideas. The Gatherings was filled throughout the shop with Spring which was so uplifting and made me rethink my winter décor at home. I love rabbits and was so happy going around the shop and seeing her Spring touches everywhere. I couldn't wait to get home with my finds and bring Spring into my country home. I met Lori who was so welcoming and friendly. She does some of the wonderful items in fabric that are throughout the store. I loved it all. It is so nice to find a shop that has really nice handmade goods and smalls that obviously are made from the love of the craft and straight from the heart. The Gatherings has small cupboards, cubbies and interesting small antique furniture pieces to choose from and the way the shop is decorated you won't have any problems visualizing how these unique pieces would fit into your home. The Gatherings looks small from the outside but trust me you will need time to go through all of the rooms and see their offerings. Every time I went around different things caught my eye. The themes throughout the shop are amazing. I love kitchenware and they have green, red and of course wonderful primitive items for you to choose from. The Gatherings selection of vintage lace is really nice so if you need a bit of lace for that special project or display in your home they have a nice selection to choose from. I also loved the pin keeps made from old fabric, quilt pieces and old zinc lids. I found so many things to fill my old wooden bowls at home. The Gatherings is filled with so many things that made me smile and brought back great memories. There is a touch of whimsy that was so refreshing in the Gatherings. It really was so much to take in on my first visit and I can't wait to go back. It's just a hop right off the Ohio Turnpike so don't miss this wonderful treasure in Milan. Plan a trip soon to the Gatherings, you won't be disappointed. Please remember our furry friends and if you have room in your home and heart check out the wonderful cats and dogs that are waiting in rescue for a forever family and home. Country Blessings, ? A Cool Dinnertime The warm days of spring are giving way to the hotter days of summer and it's time to pull out some cool dinner ideas. The temperature can soar in the late afternoon and early evening and you may not want to heat up your kitchen in the heat of the day. Grilling can be a good option, but sometimes it's just too warm outside to stand over a hot grill. Another good reason for a cold supper is more personal - I often need something easy to pull out of the refrigerator after a long lazy afternoon at the pool! Try this yummy recipe. You can put it together in the morning and it makes a great dinner all by itself. Enjoy! Antipasto Pasta Salad 8 oz. rotini pasta (or any other small pasta) 2 oz. chopped salami 2 oz. chopped pepperoni 4 oz. diced Monterey jack cheese 1 small can sliced black olives, drained 1/2 red bell pepper, diced 1/2 green bell pepper, diced 1 roma tomato, diced 1 pkg. Good Seasons Italian salad dressing mix, plus ingredients to prepare 2 T. freshly grated parmesan cheese Cook pasta al dente, drain and rinse with cold water. Set aside while preparing ingredients. Make salad dressing according to directions on pkg.; I like to use red wine vinegar. Combine 1st 8 ingredients. Pour over about 1/2 c. salad dressing. Add more to your taste. If making ahead of time, you can always add more dressing just before serving. Refrigerate. Just before serving, sprinkle with fresh grated Parmesan and toss. Restoring Your Treasures Have you ever found some wonderful books in an antique shop and you desperately wanted to take them home and put them on your shelf, but the musty odor stopped you? Antique shops and used bookstores can be a treasure trove, but getting rid of that used bookstore smell can be a daunting task! Try this trick. Set the book up in front of a fan for a couple of days. Then place it in a plastic storage container with a box of baking soda for a few days. Hardbound books will take longer because the hard covers tend to hold the musty smell a little longer than paperbacks. Susan Tipsord 2011 ohiocountryregister.com 31 - Bloomville - Bettsville Primitive Crossroads Help the Birds • Put up a bird feeder and a bird house. • Never disturb a bird nest. Many birds will abandon the nest if the eggs or chicks have been disturbed. • In springtime, hang nesting materials in tree branches, bushes or near the birdfeeder. • String, wool, grasses or straw are all helpful to songbirds when they are constructing their nests. • Try not to use insecticides in your garden. These chemicals can poison birds if they eat contaminated seeds, berries or insects, or drink contaminated water. • Birds enjoy a birdbath. It is a ready source of water for drinking and dunking. • Most young birds have a period where they leave the nest, but can't quite fly yet. They may be on the ground for a day or so, hopping about and looking quite perplexed. Time to keep kitty indoors and just leave the young ones alone. For the most part, warm-weather events are light and easy and we want our look to reflect that. Adding highlights to your hair can be a fun way to change up your look. Highlights done in a salon can be time-consuming and expensive, and some people don't like to use chemicals on their hair. If this sounds like you, try some of these natural highlights at home. Before using any of these ideas, wash your hair with a moisturizing shampoo and use a good conditioner. If your hair tends to be on the lighter side or you want dramatic highlights, dilute lemon juice with water. Spray on your hair (don't soak it) and sit in the sun for 30 minutes or so. Rinse hair well. Repeat until you get the results you want. If you have darker hair or want dramatic highlights, use coffee or black tea. In the shower, pour cooled coffee or tea over your hair several times. Rinse thoroughly. Condition hair, repeat if necessary.
