O. Box 37 - Cable, OH 43009 937-652-1157, Fax: 937-484-8963 Email : ohiocountryregister@yahoo.com http:///www.countryregister.com Reproduction or use without permission of editorial or graphic content in any manner is prohibited. The paper is distributed free through its advertisers and selected tourist information centers, but subscriptions are offered at $18 per year (P&H), single copy $3. The Country Register began in Arizona in the fall of 1988 to provide effective and affordable advertising for shops, shows and other experiences enjoyed by a kindred of readership. Since then, the paper has spread to many other areas, all of which are listed below. Look for the paper in your travels. To receive a sample paper from another area, mail $3 in the USA or $4 in Canada to that area's editor. Advertising rates are available upon request. If there is not a paper in your state, and you are interested in publishing a paper, contact the editor of the Arizona paper at (602) 942-8950. The Country Register is available at the shops that advertise and often at other unique locations. We hope you enjoy this bi-monthly publication and let the advertisers know. USA Today is my birthday! Happy Day! I’m not telling you this because I expect you to send cards & presents... I’m simply sharing because although I do enjoy a party & gifts, I’m realizing that age really doesn’t matter. I’m very fortunate and have friends of all ages - both young and old - and I enjoy them all. I’m also realizing more every year how fortunate I am to have good health and how lucky I am in so many ways with my wonderful family & home. One thing that I’m really thankful for is my association with this paper. The Ohio Country Register has been a wonderful opportunity for me. I have had the chance to meet and work with some great people, visit so many of the shops across our great state, and spend time doing what I really love. It’s also fun to talk with readers who need a copy of the paper to help find the best shopping spots when they’re visiting Ohio, etc. I had one lady who wanted to try a recipe she had seen but couldn’t find her paper, so we went through a couple of back issues until we located what she was looking for and I read it to her so she could prepare it for a party! Each birthday gives us a chance to reflect. It’s also a great time to look forward in anticipation of what’s to come. I am counting on making new memories with my family & friends, new growth and exciting times with the Country Register, and lots of good times ahead. So, Happy Birthday to me! I wish all of you well and hope you will take time to visit some of the shops who advertise with us. Thank them for their support of the Country Register, this paper wouldn’t be possible without them. Cheers! The Country Register In Your Mailbox? We Can Do That... SUBSCRIPTIONS The Country Register is distributed as a complimentary gift from its advertisers, and we encourage you to stop by your favorite shop every two months to pick up your new copy. However, for the convenience of those who may not be able to get to a shop, we do offer subscriptions for $18.00 per year (Continental U.S.) to cover the cost of postage and handling. It’s time for that most glorious of crafty mom holidays - Halloween costume time! Not being a crafty mom, I have been known to resort to storebought costumes on more than one occasion. However, my friend Sandy assures me that with a little planning and creativity, anyone can come up with some great costumes with no more than a sweat suit and some craft supplies. As a matter of fact, she made me a tail and ears last year, and with a black sweat suit, I was a mouse for my son’s Halloween party at school. Craft stores now carry colored and patterned duck tape that is great for cutting out shapes and sticking on to make polka dots, stripes and patterns on solid clothing you already have. Thin red sweats and black polka dots-a ladybug costume. White sweats and black polka dots-a dalmatian costume. Costume stores and dollar stores carry affordable accessories you can add to your creation You may even find the perfect accessories in your child’s toy box. I think you’ll find that with a little planning Halloween costume creating isn’t as scary as it seems! Susan Tipsord 2011 2800 S. ST. RT. 100, TIFFIN, OH (1/4 MILE N. By Jim Komar The apple got man into trouble according to the Book of Genesis. Ever since then man has enjoyed that fruit all over the world. With more than 7,500 types in the world, we find China cultivates 35% of apples, the US 7.5%, followed by Turkey, Russia, India and others. Apples first came to North th America in the 17 century via colonists. Now let me share a French recipe that is a huge favorite with our family. Apple Galette is a plain tart with a free form rolled crust. Pastry is elegant with simply sliced apples. A glaze may be added. Add ice cream. Umm - as good as or better than pie a la mode. Trick or Treat! Prep-20+20 min. Chill dough- 1 hr. Bake 1 hr. 15 min. Serves up to 10 generously. Pâte Brisée: 2 cups flour, 1½ sticks (6oz.) unsalted butter, ¼ tspn salt, ½ tspn sugar, 1/3 cup cold water. Cut the butter into the combined flour, salt and sugar until you have a coarse meal. Blend in water. Gather into a dough. Form a disk, wrap in plastic, chill for an hour. While dough chills, peel, quarter, and core 5 large apples. Slice each wedge into ¼ inch slices. Place these wedges in a plastic bag. Acidulate by adding at least one cup of water and 1 Tbsp lemon juice to stop discoloration of apples. Roll out the chilled dough on a well-floured board to cover a 13x15 baking sheet. Roll up on the rolling pin then roll back on the sheet. Dust with cinnamon sugar. Then arrange the apple slices in a large oval allowing at least 3 inches open to the edges as they will be folded over all the apples. Make smaller ovals inside the first adding all the slices. Dust with cinnamon sugar as you load the apples. Add thin slices of butter (1/4 stick) to top apples. Fold over the uncovered edges. Paint them with melted butter or a touch of egg substitute and sprinkle that 'paint' with a bit of sugar. It will brown for effect in a preheated 400 degree oven for up to 75 minutes. Glaze with apricot preserves thinned with Kirsch, Calvados or brandy then strained. Serve warm. Known as the Nutritious Gourmet, Jim Komar writes books and teaches cooking. Contact - Esp4you@msn.com. In a recent Tupperware survey for their Chain of Confidence campaign, 85 percent of respondents, age 18 and older, said that a supportive network of female friends is more likely to make them feel confident in the long run compared to looking attractive. “Life’s Short...Buy the Art” pamwardenartwholesale.com ohiocountryregister.com 11 Northeast Ohio - Shiloh - Lucas Housewares Hours: Mon,Tues, Wed, Fri 9-5, Sat 9-3,Thurs 9-7, Closed Sun New fabrics coming in daily! - Fall/Winter Flannels, Christmas and more! 0 9,00 than fabric e r o m ts of bol 6142 Ganges 5 Pts. Malabar Farm, 4050 Bromfield Road, Lucas, Ohio in Main Barn, Outbuildings & Grounds Hello Country Register Readers, It felt as if fall was in the air the other morning. Cool temperature that we haven't seen in awhile, low humidity and just that funny feeling you get when the trees start showing the stress of summer and can't wait for the relief of fall. With all of the hot weather we've had this is a well deserved and welcome break. So I thought I would check out my Country Register, get in the car and see what some of the Country Register's shops were up to. Children are back in school and a ride in the country sounded so pleasant and inviting. ? I love to sew and saw the ad for Country Fabrics in Shiloh, Ohio. If you are crazy for fabric like I am I would suggest you take a good friend with you that can help you out of this shop before you buy massive amounts of wonderful fabric. I was forewarned about the 9,000 bolts of fabric and stayed only 2 hours but could have stayed much longer. I can't even come close to estimating how many bolts of fabric I looked at. Their quality is so hard to find these days. When I walked into the foyer at Country Fabrics and there was a beautiful log cabin quilt hanging there made from navy blue and deep red homespun I knew I was in for a treat. Civil War fabric is my very favorite and their selection was excellent. They have a huge amount of homespun that was hard o narrow down to a reasonable amount to take home and their flannel choices for fall and winter were shouting out to be cut for that special winter project. They have really good quality fleece if you want to make a throw for someone for the holidays and a fun selection of quilt patterns and pattern books when you walk in the front door. But that's not all they have. I think the suspenders that are made out of all different types of elastic were really fun and if you want to make your own they have the elastic on the roll with all of the notions and metal parts you will need to complete the project. Camo anyone? They have Amish hats for men and women, baby items, toys, dishes and a kitchen gadget dept. I got wooden words carved in the USA for inspiration in my work room and I found black headed pins in their well stocked notions dept. for my primitive make dos. There is something in every corner and when their ad says it's worth the trip they aren't fooling. They are out in the country and the drive Handmades-FolkArtRug Hooking-Prim Antiques Mercantile Gatherings Magazine will be @ the Show 419-347-3726 or 419-347-9558 is beautiful. I can't wait to go back which will be soon. They told me they are having a sale in Sept. so plan to visit Country Fabrics soon. You won't be disappointed, I was thrilled. Another day I drove to Mansfield on an errand and had some time to go exploring with my Country Register and found the delightful Country Clutter just south of Mansfield on Rte 42 in Lexington. What an amazing shop! I love smalls and this shop has so many. Their motto is that clutter makes a house a home and they mean it in the most wonderful sense of it all. I started my Christmas shopping with an ornament for a friend and bought her this wonderful fall scented candle that they had just gotten in. When I walked in the door the aroma was so welcoming. Vicky was working that day and is such a delightful shop owner. Their candle selection is excellent, the small painted drawers were a favorite and of course they have my very favorite artist, Billy Jacob's with his pictures, still lives and paintings hanging throughout the shop. The Country Clutter is filled with great selections for your home and gift giving. I suggest that you take the time and go slowly around the shop and then reverse yourself so you don't miss a thing. The Country Clutter is really filled with must haves. Candles, unique light bulbs, shelf sitters, wall décor and I can't wait for their Holiday Open House Thanksgiving weekend. Everything was displayd so nicely and I am sure the Holiday selections will be just as wonderful. School is back in session so watch out for the children and drive safely. Enjoy a trip out with your friends with your Country Register now that fall is almost here. I love using the seasons and what comes with them from Mother Nature as inspiration for decorating my home. Each season brings things that I really love and so it is hard to pick a favorite season. But, I do believe that fall is on the top of my list for favorites!!! As a child growing up in Florida, we didn't get a lot of seasonal change. Even as an adult, one of my most fond memories is raking up leaves and watching my kids jump in them. The delight and excitement of “jumping in the leaves” is so exhilarating. Secretly, as an adult, I even jumped in those leaves!!! So let's think about how we can use those leaves and that feeling of excitement that comes from jumping in them as inspiration for decorating our homes this fall. Leaves can be such a great addition to our decorating as we go into the fall. Using leaves in the welcoming wreaths that grace our front doors, to adding leaves to our favorite table top displays, the ideas that come from leaves just keep coming. You can even add that touch of fall leaves to your walls and windows with the great new vinyl clings that are available. Or if you are a craft lover, then you make them from your Cricut machine. As you think about decorating your home for this season, keep in mind the beautiful, warm hues that you see during this season. From the golden maples to shimmering sun on the lake surrounded by leaves that are turning, there are so many colors that will make your home feel so cozy and delightful this season. Painting a wall can be so easy, as an accent. Just one wall in a room painted a warm hue of green or gold, can make a huge difference in how your room feels. It is so easy to paint that same wall again when spring arrives. Don't be afraid of paint. I use to think of painting a wall as being such a permanent thing. But I have learned that painting can be such an easy change to make and one that will totally change the look for that room. So go for it! Add a little fall color to your room through the walls. Now, if you are still afraid of painting a wall, then think of other ways to add that color. Drapes, throws, pillows and even rugs can bring that change in color to your room. I like to think of this basic color change as the canvas for what you will do next. And what is next? This is the fun part of decorating. It is bringing in the pumpkins, gourds, wreaths, scare crows and all the fun things that come with this season. Decorate that mantle, the dining room table top, the front door, or even switch out a print on our walls that has more of the colors of fall. You will soon see your home take on all the ambiance of a beautiful fall day. Something else that I think screams Fall when it comes to decorating our homes is not just something that appeals to the eye but something that will appeal to your other senses as well. And what might that be? Fragrance! Light some of those wonderful smelling candles that fill the house with cider and spice, apple pie or even Pumpkin. Now if you are really brave, you might enjoy turning on the oven and actually baking your favorite muffins, pies, or cookies to give your home that wonderful Fall feel. I think I will stick to candles and fragrance oils. If you are like me, I tend to gain more weight in the fall, as all these wonderful delights make me want to bake and then I have to taste test what I bake. So good luck with that one… I recently saw a cute idea I wanted to share with you. It was taking a wrought iron bowl rack that usually stands on the floor to hold your favorite bowls and turning it into a great front porch fall welcome. Instead of placing bowls in the rack, fill it with your favorite pumpkins. Another great way of using this is to fill it with those great corn stalks. Sometimes finding a place for stalks can be challenging. Check out the two photos that show this piece in those two ways. If you are wondering where you can get one, check out my website where you can purchase one or ask in your favorite Country Store that advertises in the Country Register. So take a leap--jump in those fall leaves as you decorate your home this fall. Pat Dempsey is Senior Executive Director of AtHome America. It’s time to get the carving tools out and get to work on those pumpkins! Across the country, pumpkins are one of the most popular outdoor decorations for fall. They come in a myriad of shapes, colors and sizes so they complement any outdoor decor. Some people prefer one large jack-o-lantern to greet guests on the front porch, and some people love to pile several together to make a statement. Real pumpkins are fun to carve and the seeds are wonderful when roasted in the oven with some olive oil and kosher salt. However, you can also get fake pumpkins at the craft store that can be carved and used year after year. I got a great carving tip from Farmer Jeff at our local pumpkin patch last year. He suggested cutting a circle from the base of the pumpkin rather than the top. After the pumpkin is cleaned out and carved it is then placed back on the base and the stem is still intact. He also suggested rubbing the cut pieces of the pumpkin with petroleum jelly in order to keep it from drying out prematurely. Make pumpkin carving a family affair - it’s something that everyone can enjoy! Quilting With Barbara As we move all too quickly into fall, it's pleasurable to take one last look at summer. Or, in other words, How I Spent My Summer Holidays, abridged version. I looked forward to our visit to England and Scotland in June and July, anticipating searching out quaint little quilt shops in quaint little villages and towns. After all, we were going to rent a car, and although my navigation skills are so-so, my husband is an excellent driver, even on the “wrong” side of the road. What could be easier? As it turned out…a lot of things! First of all, none of those quaint little villages seems to have a quilt shop, quaint or otherwise. When we inquired locally, we were often told something like, “The hardware at the top of the street has some cloth,” or “I don't know, but you might look at the….” So we gave up on small towns, picturesque as they were, and concentrated on enjoying the beautiful English countryside and historic sites. After all, I can always buy fabric at home, but I can't visit two-thousand-year-old Roman mosaics there. Our next major stop was the Isle of Tiree, home of a good friend and some of my forebears. Tiree is the outermost island of the Inner Hebrides, three hours by ferry off the west coast of Scotland. Our friend mentioned that her sister-in-law, who also lives on the island, did some quilting. “Some quilting,” indeed! Here on this isolated, misty, rainy isle that has in many ways ignored the twenty-first century, lives a most amazing art quilter, Jane Macdonald. She works at her own creative pace, sometimes for herself and sometimes on commission. Like many of us she has a wall of shelves filled with fabric and ideas and samples galore. Unlike many of us, her ideas come to fruition in amazing creations, mainly wall quilts. When I lamented that I had found little evidence of quilting in the UK, she gave me a copy of the national quilters' publication and told us we should visit the National Quilt Museum in York. Exemplifying the generosity of quilters worldwide, she appeared the next morning with the gift of several fat quarters and delicious bits of unusual fabrics. Following her advice, a few days later we spent a half day in the National Quilt Museum in York located in the historic St. Anthony's Hall, a former guild hall dating from the 1400s. The displays were fascinating, and just after we despaired of viewing any quilt less than 150 years old, we entered another room full of stunning contemporary quilts and hangings, So we went on to London to visit one of the world's most-famous many of which had won prizes. I thought right then that my day was department stores, Liberty, noted for its silks. Surely they would have complete, but when we crossed the street to experience a pub lunch at the piles of quilting cottons too. Well, no. They stock silks and other Black Swan (former home of Lord Mayors of York, and, for a time the gorgeous fabrics, but their cottons were limited to some by Kaffe Fasset and Moda, priced at the equivalent of $16 to $22 per meter. These cottons home of General James Wolfe who wrested control of Canada from the French at the Battle of Quebec, 1759) our day was more than complete. It I can buy at home for considerably less, so I was content with buying a overflowed. token half-meter. The Victoria and Albert had a few fat quarters of Victorian prints. That took care of fabric shopping in London. And that's how we spent our summer holiday. I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best. ~Oscar Wilde ohiocountryregister.com 25 -Springfield - Rustiques located at The Murray House Bed & Breakfast 1475 Upper Valley Pike, Springfield, Ohio (We’ve moved - just across the hall inside Upper Valley Mall) 937-324-4474 Blonder Products • Naked Bee Products • Park Designs McCall's Candles & Tarts • Swan Creek Candles • Woodwick Candles Goosecreek Candles • Keepers of the Light • Scentsible Scents Quilts--Throws & Queen Size • Picture Frames Reproduction Furniture • Willow Tree • Large Line of Ohio State Legacy Paper Items • Garden Accessories • Garden Flags Wooden Plates & Wooden Bowls •Treenware Hours: 10-9 Mon-Sat, 12-6 Sun Open Saturdays 10am-3pm Countdown to September Extravaganza Begins! By Barbara Mills Lassonde Labor Day was first celebrated in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882. It was planned by the Central Labor Union, which dedicated that day to celebrating the social and economic contributions of American workers. In 1884, it was changed to the first Monday in September, and was a “workingmen's holiday.” The idea spread throughout the country, mainly through labor organizations, and in the years that followed, many states passed laws creating a Labor Day holiday. In 1894, Congress designated the first Monday in September a national holiday, Labor Day. To celebrate those early Labor Days, parades were held to demonstrate the strength of labor organizations. These parades were followed by festivals for the entertainment of the workers and their families. Today we seldom think of honoring American workers, because nearly all of us fit into that category for most of our lives. We think of Labor Day as the official end of summer- the end of lazy days at the lake, stinging sunburns at the seashore, horrible heat waves, droughts and countless hours toiling in the garden, trying to eke out a decent harvest. Every season has its joys, its miseries, its chores. Summer gave us sunshine, growing crops, unbearable weather conditions, destructive and annoying insects, lawns to mow, weeds to pull. Now it's time to bid farewell to all things summer: barbecues, swimming lessons, family reunions, summer visitors, beautiful flower gardens. It's the return of kids and teachers to school, the promise of cooler weather, agricultural fairs, colorful foliage, goldenrod blossoms and allergies. Crisp, clear mornings greet us. We smell the spicy scent of autumn leaves crunching beneath our feet, watch flocks of migrating birds and hear the crack of a hunter's rifle echoing through the woods. It's the season of hurricanes, downed trees, flooding streams. It's time to winterize or store away the boat, pool, patio furniture, garden hose and insect repellent. All used in a flurry for such a brief time and now we're done with them for the next eight or nine months. We haul out the chain saw, leaf blower, jackets and window wash. We work around our job schedules and the weather to put our perennials to bed, clean up the vegetable garden and stack the firewood. This is the season to prepare for the long, cold winter ahead, when we're more confined to the house and fill our spare time with needlework projects, reading and cooking up new recipes. Besides honoring all of us who work, Labor Day is a time of transition from the freedom of summer to the chores of autumn packed into a few short weeks before the winter winds begin to blow.
