Artistic Expression / Club How To: Participants use their talented brains to create beauty through expressing themselves using art supplies. Brain Boot Camp: Every morning we do activities designed to stimulate your brain, especially parts of the brain that may have been affected by a stroke. These activities are challenging on purpose — if they were easy, they wouldn’t help much, would they? So bring your thinking caps and be ready to work this vital organ! Balance with Brian: Brian (physical therapist) brings his jokes, knowledge, and enthusiasm to help our members improve their balance. He’s the best! We promise. Cognitive Games: We have a variety of games that encourages higher level cognitive and perceptual skills such as planning strategy, problem solving, & so on. Creative Conversation: Our volunteer speech therapists get survivors talking about everything under the sun. This is great for people with aphasia, but others like it, too. Current Events with Dave: Spend some time catching up with the world around us and keeping ourselves informed, because KNOWLEDGE is POWER! Games/Coffee Talk with Carla: Our volunteer Carla shares her energy with us by playing games, chatting over coffee, and anything else our survivors would like to do! Give Back: Volunteering our time and efforts is a great way to help out others in our community, and it really makes us feel good about ourselves, too. We do a variety of activities to help others in this class. This month, we will volunteer with Catholic Charities. Goal Setting: Each week, we set measurable, realistic goals and help each other brainstorm how we will achieve them. We also share our progress each week and celebrate our successes! Happy Place/Stress Management/ Stress is a risk factor for stroke, which is why it’s imperative that survivors learn methods for managing their stress in a healthful way. Sometimes we will investigate other ways to socialize and enjoy ourselves – yes, it makes one feel happy. Imagination Indulgences: Sometimes Nancy, a stroke survivor will volunteer her time. She has perfected her craft post-stroke and enjoys sharing her experience, expertise, and encouragement with us to find our own creative spot. Life Management: Stroke survivors participate in activities that focus around wellness, role satisfaction, stress management, self-awareness, coping, support systems, and various other topics. Morning Muscle Moves: Get your muscles awake and flexible! Do you do these at home on days you’re not at the ASF? You should. Music with Maggie: Maggie our music therapist is an all-around fun gal. She brings us songs and laughter. Did you know that music helps our brains? Maggie will tell us how! Out & About: Each month, we take a trip out into the community to explore new places and learn new things. Perks of the Week/Weekend Events: Reflect about fun times by looking at pictures taken throughout the week. Looking for something to do over the weekend? We talk about events in the community too! Range of Motion: Movements of joints throughout the body from head to toe, usually led by Survivor Jerry. Survivor Support: Don comes to share stories and boost the group’s spirits. 913.649.1776 fax 913.649.6661 Lunch is at 12:00-1:00 5916 Dearborn St, Mission, KS 66202
