Are you looking for new ways to connect to other adults in
prayer? Adult formation of our spiritual lives in not just words it’s how we live in the mystery of God’s plan for us. Our lives of
discipleship need to be nourished. As adults learn, pray and grow
together so does our church community. All are invited to the many
opportunities to grow in faith together. Please allow the spirit to
guide you to attend one of the many programs we offer:
“Reflections” This session, the book Radical Hospitality is the
focus of reflection and study. This is book of wisdom as well as
stories that encourage us to embrace the true meaning of love for
the other, by welcoming the stranger. This book is food for the soul!
This session will meet in the parish office from 10:00 to 11:00 am
on February 8, 15 and 22. For Session #3 of “Reflections” we will be
using the book “Inspirations” by Pope Francis. Join us then too!
“Prayer and Spirituality” A time to become closer to God
through prayer. Prayer is vital to our deep commitment to Jesus.
Prayer has the transforming power of grace. This group meets in
the parish office from 10:00 to 11:00 am on February 15, April 19,
May 17, and June 21. All are invited!!
“Lent: 40 Soul Searching Questions” Begin a new spiritual
journey this Lent that gives you new insights into the meaning
of your life. Develop a deeper relationship with God, one truer
to the demands of the world, the belief that you are called by
God to be light to the world. The Lenten reflection book that
will be used is “40 Soul-Stretching Conversations” by Sister Joan
Chittister. This group will meet in the parish hall from 10:00 to
11:00 am on the Wednesdays during Lent: February 25, March
4, 11, 18 & 25. Babysitting will be provided.

St. Joseph Statue Dedication
Rosary Monday nights | 9:00 pm Come join the CCM for some good
All former St. Joseph parishioners and families are invited to St. Elizabeth
Church Sunday February 22 to celebrate as we dedicate our statue of St.
Joseph in memory of the first Catholic Church for Blacks in the South.
Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 am followed by our dedication and a brief

Pilgrimage to Shrines of France
June 29 - July 9 | Reservation deadline: March 15, 2015
Join Father Stephen Alcott, O.P., from St. Thomas Aquinas Church in
Charlottesville, on a Pilgrimage visiting Shrines of France including Paris,
Lisieux, Nevers and Lourdes. Pilgrims will visit sites of Parish including the
Miraculous Medal Shrine; places associated with the lives of St. Therese
and St. Bernadette and will participate in the liturgical celebrations of
Lourdes. While in Lourdes, pilgrims will join the U.S. National Rosary
Pilgrimage which is accompanied by clergy, medical staff and volunteers

following dates. Parents will have instruction at the same time your child is

Preparation for 10th Grade Sacrament of Confirmation

Confirmation preparation for 10th graders begins in January. The preparation consists of 4 modules and a retreat. If you are in 10th grade and
would like to be Confirmed this year, please contact Liz Riegler as soon as

This is a requirement for all 10th graders being Confirmed in May, 2015.

On February 8, Drew Burrichter, a parishioner of Cathedral and the
Director of Mission for Bon Secours Health Source will bring us a
presentation from 10:00 - 11:00 am in the Parish Hall. "Full Circle of Grief”
has a mission to provide comprehensive and professional grief support
for children, adults, family and the community. Please come to learn
about the many compassionate programs that are provided by this
organization.
Bingo is Back!

Bingo is Back! The Knights of Columbus,
Bernard J. Quinn council #11710, will
be having their Annual Bingo Night
Fundraiser on Saturday, February 21 at
6:30 pm in the Parish Hall. The entry fee will be $30/family (4), $20/single,
and $10/VCU student; this is your gaming fee for the evening. Pizza,
salad, soft drinks, coffee, and other finger food will be provided by the
Knights. Door prizes and raffle items will be available. Please come out
and join the Knights and our church parishioners for an evening of FUN,
FOOD, and FELLOWSHIP! Doors open at 6:30 pm and gaming begins at
7:00 pm. Cash donations will be accepted in lieu of attendance. Hope to

“Reflections” Session #2

The book that will be used is titled Radical
Hospitality. St. Benedict wrote about Hospitality,
welcoming the outsider, the poor, the pilgrim.
Guests are crucial to the making of any heart.
Read and discuss about how we can welcome the
Divine in the stranger. The facilitator of this group
is Mike Jackman. If you have any questions please

Separated or Divorced Catholics Support Group

There can be healing during and after a divorce.
A program will be offered at Cathedral to minister
to those experiencing a separation of their
marriage or a divorce. This group will meet in the
Parish Offices on the following dates and time:
February 11, 19 & 25. All sessions will begin at 7:00
pm. If you are interested in joining this group or

this support group.

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today we continue to read from Mark’s Gospel, learning more
about the ministry of Jesus. Jesus cured Simon’s mother-in-law, and she
immediately began to serve Jesus and his disciples. Jesus also cured
many others who were brought to him, healing their illnesses and driving
out demons. As we will see throughout Mark’s Gospel, Jesus did not
permit the demons to speak because they knew his identity and would
have revealed it to those who were present.
On the morning after this busy day, Jesus retreated in prayer, but was
pursued by Simon and others who brought news that many people were
looking for him. At this point in Mark’s Gospel, we begin to see a distinct
role for the inner circle of Jesus’ disciples—they act as intermediaries
between Jesus and the people. Jesus reports to his disciples that they
need to leave Capernaum to preach in other places.
Today’s Gospel completes a picture of Jesus’ ministry: preaching,
curing the sick, driving out demons, and then moving on to continue
this work in another place. Mark’s Gospel tells us that Jesus did this
throughout Galilee.
Jesus’ compassion and healing of the sick is a sign of the Kingdom of
God. The Church continues to extend Christ’s healing presence to others
in its ministry to the sick. In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick,
the Church prays for spiritual and physical healing, forgiveness of sins,
and comfort for those who are suffering from illness.
In today’s Gospel we also notice the importance of prayer in Jesus’
daily life. Jesus rose early in the morning, removed himself from the
crowds, and went to a deserted place to pray. When the disciples found
him, he told them that it was time to move on. We believe that in his
prayers Jesus found guidance and direction from God. We also bring our
decision-making to God in prayer, asking for his guidance and direction
