Rotary Club of Glenferrie inc. Glenferrie Rotarian Issue: Vol 42 #24 03rd Feb , 2015 Short and Sharp 3 February 2015 Greetings Fellow Rotarians PRESIDENT Jeremy Romanes A very busy few weeks! Welcome back officially to the New Rotary Year. This week David Campbell entertained us with poetry from CJ Dennis and others on the topic “Australian Rhyming Verse is Alive and Well”. SECRETARY Cheryl Pisterman David is developing a well-deserved reputation in the Rotary set! Thanks John S for lining up this speaker and a most entertaining and moving evening. TREASURER Michael Hills David recited a number of his poems including ”Homecoming”, “A Fathers Prayer” and “That Night at the B and S Ball”. You can find the latter poem on YouTube at David’s website along with details about how to obtain all his books. http://www.campbellwriter.com/ www.glenferrierotary.org.au secretary@glenferrierotary.org.au In other breaking news: EDITOR Ian Dobson Please forward copy for the bulletin as a PDF to idobson@dobsons.com.au MEETINGS Tuesdays 6pm for 6.30pm Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club 489 Glenferrie Road Kooyong Vic 3144 Melways Map Ref 59 C3 • • • • Bookings Email Don Moore donmoore@bigpond.net.au • Contact Don Moore for all attendance matters by midday Friday prior to the Tuesday meeting. The Rotary Club of Albert Park is holding a Women in Rotary breakfast at Crown Casino on 5 March for International Women's Day. Our Club has been asked to end its support to this event and tickets ($60 each if purchased before 9 February) can be obtained here. Applications for a new round of the Rotary International Innovative and Flexible Club Pilot are now open. If you have any ideas about innovative things that the Club could do to remain relevant to members and new members, then come and see me. Applications close on 15 March so get your skates on! Courtesy the eagle eyes of Jan Twite - A great article in a recent RI Weekly Newsletter on the tips and tricks for recruiting new younger members. I would really like to push for a number of new members for the Club before the year is over, and if you do know someone who might be good for the Club and who might be willing to join, invite them along to enjoy our hospitality. Through Foundation Director Don Heath we have been advised by D9800 that Swinburne Rotartact has been advised that they have been successful in their application for a District International Grant to implement the Rotaract project "Establishment of a Basic Literacy and Vocational Training Centre" in Gombe, Nigeria. Funds totalling around $14,000 (through a mix of sources) can now be made available for this project –the subject of a future Tuesday night presentation. There are various screenings of the Second Best Marigold Hotel happening in early March, including a Tuesday night Curry and Movie Deal starting at Casa Del Heath and venturing down the road to the Rivoli on 3 March. The Heaths having just returned from India this should be a sensational event. See Don for details. Have a good week in Rotary! Jeremy FROM THE TREASURER: If you do not attend a meeting and have not informed Don Moore of your absence by mid-day of the previous Friday, you will be obliged to pay for the meal. If you wish to bring a partner, visitor or guest, please inform Don no later than mid-day of the previous Friday. THIS BULLETIN IS FOR MEMBERS USE ONLY Rotary Club of Glenferrie inc. SMILES: A retired man’s job Someone asked me, “and now that you are retired, do you still have a job?” I replied, “Yes, I am my wife’s sexual adviser.” “Somewhat shocked, he said “I beg your pardon, but what do you mean by that?” “Very simple. My wife has told me that when she wants my @#&ing advice, she’ll ask me for it.” The District Conference will be filled with a very interesting and diverse group of speakers. Hobart is a gorgeous place for a getaway- originally a penal colony, it was founded in 1804. It is the second oldest city in Australia after Sydney- so lots of historical sites to visit and explore. March is a gorgeous time to be visiting; the average temperature is 20 degrees and the month of March has the least average rain recorded there across the year:) Hobart is a real foodie hot spot as well- home of the wonderful Mures Seafood restaurant. There are countless new places to explore- Garagistes, Taste Cafe, Pigeon Hole The conference 2015 will be a great excuse to visit such a lovely city! The Conference website also contains links to other restaurants in the vicinity of the Venue. Fantastic entertainment has been lined up to light up the Conference and there are several great fellowship opportunities planned. Rotary content is in the planning stages; an excellent opportunity for new Rotarians to learn more about Rotary Irene and I look forward to seeing you in Hobart DG Murray The Rotary Foundation RC Glenferrie Dinner and Film Night All members and partners are invited to a fun Foundation Dinner and Film night to raise funds for our “End Polio Now” campaign.
