The College is centrally located in the city on a campus comprising 3.5 acres of land with excellent infrastructure and academic ambience. It is a nonprofit educational society with a vision to provide education to women especially those coming from the rural areas, with the aim to promote empowerment of women. The College was conferred with autonomous status by UGC in 1989 and it is celebrating the Silver Jubilee of autonomous status during 2014-15. The College has been re-accredited with Grade ‘A’ by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2013 under third cycle. The College has been selected by UGC as a College with Potential for Excellence (CPE) in 2010 and was extended the same in 2014. It is a partially aided college offering several conventional, career oriented and value added courses to meet the emerging needs of society. Being an autonomous college it has its own Almanac and Evaluation System. The College has completed 60 years of service in the cause of higher education for women and will be celebrating its Diamond Jubilee during 2014-15. The Department of Chemistry is as old as the college. Over the years, it has been the mainstay of the college with substantial student strength of the college pursuing chemistry as one of the subjects. M.Sc. (Organic Chemistry) was introduced during academic year 2005-06. From spirit lamp studies to modern-day laboratory equipment, the department has made steady and giant strides in the last 60 years. The Department has ten Laboratories, an Audio-Visual room and a Library with good collection of books.The Department of Chemistry offers Inter- disciplinary electives to both commerce & arts students. The Department of Chemistry has introduced Forensic Science as an optional subject at Undergraduate level during academic year 2014-15. The Department has 11 faculty members out of which, 3 are Ph.D’s, 4 are NET qualified, 1 is SET qualified. The Department has established a well equipped Research Laboratory recently. The faculty are involved in active research in various areas of Chemistry. The Department received one minor research project from UGC. The faculty have published around 30 papers in National and International Journals with good impact factor and also presented papers at various National and International Conferences. The Department regularly conducts Seminars, Workshops, Extension lectures and study tours etc. The Department has conducted various Seminars on ‘Reaction Mechanism’,‘Discovery and Development of Drugs’, ‘Spectroscopy’, ‘Spectro analytical techniques’ & ‘Science in daily life’. A Workshop for ‘Chemistry P.G. Teachers’, an Inter-collegiate Chemistry Exhibitions ‘Chetna-08’ and ‘Chetna-14’ were also conducted which have drawn the attention of the students and the general public alike.
