WE WELCOME OUR NEW PRINCIPAL,
MR JOHN SCHUH
Mr Schuh commenced his career in 1985 at Pimlico.
We welcome our new Principal, Mr John Schuh, to
Pine Rivers State High School. 2015 is a double
milestone for Mr Schuh, who celebrates 30 years in
State Education, this year.
Mr Schuh commenced his career in 1985 at Pimlico
State High School (Townsville) as a Maths/ Science
teacher. He was transferred to Bowen State High
School in 1988 where he remained until the end of
1993.
During this time he had several
opportunities to act as Head of Department of
Mathematics. 1994 saw him start at Deception Bay
State High School. In 1997 he was promoted to
Head of Department- Mathematics at Bribie Island
State High School. During this time Mr Schuh was
appointed as Panel Chair: Mathematics C in the
Sunshine Coast Region until appointed as Deputy
Principal at Dakabin State High School in 1999
where he stayed until the end of 2003. During 2003
he had acting Principal experiences at Lawnton
State School and then at Morayfield State High
School.
John was appointed as Principal of Aspley State
High School (Band 10) in 2004 where he remained
for 7 years until the end of 2010. During 2010 Mr
Schuh joined the Teaching and Learning Audit team
and acted as Principal for a term at Corinda State
High School (Band 11). In 2011 Mr Schuh was
promoted to Band 11 Principal at Dakabin State
High School and led the school through a significant
reform process.
Mr Schuh is very excited and honoured to be joining
the Pine Rivers SHS family from the start of 2015.
His association with the school dates back to 1999
where, as a Deputy Principal at Dakabin State High
School, he worked closely with Ms Deakin in
promoting public education within our community.
Mr Schuh knows many of the staff at our school and
is committed to continuing the traditions and legacy
created by the previous 5 Principals of our great
school.
Mr Schuh’s love and passion for education and
student learning is very visible when you talk to
him about public education. He brings to our school
community

experiences and his leadership focus is to develop
the capacity of every staff member of Pine Rivers
State High School to be the best they can possibly
be.
On a personal note, Mr Schuh has 3 children:- Doug
currently an Engineer,
Maddison who works in
retail, and Georgia, his youngest, who is
commencing Year 11 at North Lakes State College.
One of 5 children, Mr Schuh was raised in Nundah
by his parents Bill and Joan and is a very proud old
boy of Banyo State High School. His wife, Maree, is
currently Deputy Principal at Ferny Grove State
High School.
Mr Schuh’s passion away from leadership,
education and family is sport. A keen follower of all
sports, he was involved in schoolboy Rugby League
for many years and was instrumental in forming a
development program between Aspley State High
School and Aspley Rugby League Club. Mr Schuh
also coached Rugby League from 1986 through to
2010.
He played many years in both Indoor and Outdoor
Cricket but now is a self-confessed golf tragic
playing off a handicap of 8 at Redcliffe Golf Club.
We welcome Mr Schuh to Pine Rivers State High
School and look forward to many years of his
leadership in continuing to provide quality programs
to the students of our broad and diverse community.
“HELLO” FROM OUR NEW DEPUTY
PRINCIPAL OPERATIONS
Welcome back to the new school year. I hope that
all families had a good break from the school
routine and are now ready to get back to ‘normal’.
I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce
myself to the community and say how delighted I
am to have joined the Pine Rivers State High School
team. Having been in the school now for a couple
of weeks, I can say that the feel of the school and
the professionalism and welcoming nature of the
staff has been amazing and I feel overwhelmingly
confident that I am going to thoroughly enjoy my
time in this school. At the time of writing this, the
students have not yet returned to school, but from
my positive experience visiting the school late last
year, I am looking forward to meeting and working
with the students of “the Pine”.
To provide a little background on myself, I have
been a Deputy Principal now for 7 years and for the
last couple of years, I have been working with the
Department of Education, Training and Employment
in central office around supporting teachers, both
beginning teachers and all teachers, to continue

their professional learning journey and be the best
instructional leaders they can be. While I enjoyed
my time working across the state, I am very ready
to be back in a school working with students, staff,
families and community.
I joined the teaching profession because I enjoy
working with children, but also because I am
passionate about education and the right of every
young person to a quality education. I believe one
of the keys to quality learning is the development
of positive and mutually respectful relationships
among all stakeholders involved with the education
of any young person. I also believe in the value of
education in providing our children with life choices
and want all students to leave school with the best
possible outcome for them.
I look forward to meeting and working with you all.

QTAC RESULTS – 1st Round
First round university and TAFE offers were made
by QTAC on January 15, 2015. Congratulations to
all of our students who received an offer. Of the
109 students who applied, 106 were successful.
This equates to a 97.2% success rate. Of those
students who were successful, 56.9% received their
first preference – that’s an amazing result! Round
two offers will be released on February 5. Good
luck to those students who are waiting on this
round.
DUX OF SCHOOL 2014 GETS INTO
MEDICINE AT UQ
Congratulations to Dux of School 2014, Raquelle
Ludwig, on achieving an OP score of ‘2’.
After studying Maths B, Chemistry, Biology, English,
Social Studies and Modern History for her senior
studies Raquelle was award an OP 2. Early in 2014
Raquelle participated in the UMAT (Undergraduate
Medical Admissions Test) and received a score of
91%. From these, she was fortunate enough to be
offered a place in ‘Doctor of Medicine’ at University
of Queensland.
For her first 3 years Raquelle will be studying a
Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Biomedical
Science, before completing 4 years of Medical
Studies. Raquelle has not decided yet exactly what
area of Medicine she wants to specialise in, but
oncology and psychiatry are two areas that she is
definitely interested in.
We wish Raquelle well in her future endeavours.

Life’s Journey Program – A support group for
women caring for a child under 18
Are you a mother, grandmother or female carer
who has children under the age of 18 years in your
care? Would you like to be involved in a group
where you can make new friends, increase your
self-esteem and have fun? If so, this may be the
group for you! Life’s Journey is a free six week
friendly group for women who are parenting. You
will be able to experience new and creative things,
explore ideas, and meet new people. Hands-on
Interactive activities include painting and clay work.
Topics explored include, communication in families,
self-esteem, and stress management.

2015 INTERHOUSE SWIMMING
CARNIVAL
TUESDAY FEBRUARY 3
GRADUATE OF 2014 RECEIVES OFFER
TO STUDY ENGINEERING
Congratulations to 2014 graduate, Heather Lidgard,
who received her first preference, Bachelor of
Engineering at QUT (Gardens Point), with an OP 6.
She was very pleased with her OP as she required a
‘9’ to get into her course.
Heather has also won a Supporting Woman’s
Scholarship of $5,000 per annum for four years to
assist her with her degree and has secured a
Cadetship
with
an
engineering
firm
(NJA
Consulting) as Junior Engineer for four years.
We wish Heather well in her future endeavours.
The Inter-house Swimming Carnival for 2015 will
again be conducted in two stages.
The Junior
Secondary will take place on Tuesday, February 3
from Period 1 – 4. The Senior Carnival will take
place on the same day from 3pm-5pm approx.
The House competition will be conducted between
the 2 School Sport Houses PINE (Panthers) of
House Colour Green and RIVERS (Rhinos) of House
Colour Gold.

The Carnival caters for everyone.
Competitive
swimmers have the opportunity to compete in 50m
Championship Events. All swimmers can participate
in the 25m Participation Events. All swimmers will
receive points for their house every time they swim.
Everyone is encouraged to “Have a Go!” Year 11
Sport and Recreation Students will act as officials
for the junior carnival with Year 12 Outdoor
Recreation students acting as officials for the senior
carnival.
The Junior Secondary Carnival will involve all Year 7
and 8s with swimmers only from Year 9s. The
Senior Carnival starting at 3pm will involve all
interested students from Year 10, 11 and 12. It is
a school day and attendance at school is
compulsory. Students involved with the Junior
Carnival MUST wear their sports uniform to school,
and MUST leave the school to travel home in their
sports uniform also. Students are encouraged to
wear their house colours on the day and may
change into appropriate colours at school.
No
clothing of any other colour is acceptable. If
students do not have appropriate clothing of the
correct colour, they are to wear their sports
uniform only.
At this time of year, students are required to pay
particular attention to their sun safety. Shade is
provided on both sides of the pool, but it is
important for all students to wear hats and shirts
with sleeves (in house colours of course), apply
sunscreen regularly and bring a water bottle. Food
and drinks will be available for purchase in the pool
area supplied by the LOTE department and the
tuckshop. Students will not be able to access the
tuckshop outside the pool area.
Long Distance Swimming Events will be
starting at 3pm on the same day.
200m (Girls) All ages and 200m (Boys) All Ages
All students who qualify will be participating in the
District Swimming Carnival which will be held
Lawnton Swimming Pool on Wednesday February
18. Students up to 12 years will compete from
8am -2pm, with seniors starting after 2pm and
expected to finish by 6pm. These students will
receive a letter to take home to parents/caregivers
in order to receive permission to participate.
Parents are welcome to attend to watch their
son/daughter compete. Please make yourself
known to staff so we can accommodate you with
suitable seating.
Rugby League is another competitive sport option
that students in Years 7-9 can select. Again this
option incurs a cost of approximately $60 for
Semester 1, plus uniform. Rugby League involves
trialling and training for the school team to compete
in the Aspley Broncos Challenge and other knockout
competitions. These are predominantly after school
competitions. Students not selected for interschool
sport will do the Success program. At the Pine, we
have an experienced, enthusiastic and professional
coaching staff that can’t wait to get stuck into the

As we are a Sunsmart School, all students will
require their own hats and water bottles for
each session every week. School bucket hats can
be purchased from the uniform shop.

INSURANCE COVER FOR STUDENTS
UNDERTAKING PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
Physical activity and physical education, particularly
contact sports, carry inherent risks of injury.
Parents are advised that Pine Rivers State High
School acting within the Department of Education
Training and Employment does not have Personal
Accident Insurance cover for students.
Education Queensland has public liability cover for
all approved school activities and provides
compensation for students injured at school only
when the Department is negligent. If this is not the
case, then all costs associated with the injury are
the responsibility of the parent or caregiver.
It is a personal decision for parents as to the type
and level of private insurance they arrange to cover
students for any accidental injury that may occur.

YEAR 7 and 8 PARENT EVENING
WEDNESDAY February 18 {6:30PM}
INTER-SCHOOL SPORT AT PINE RIVERS
HIGH SCHOOL - YEARS 7, 8, 9
Inter-school Sport is held every Thursday afternoon
for Years 7, 8 and 9. Years 7, 8 and 9 have the
option of participating in the interschool sport
program, which involves competing against other
schools within the Pine Rivers District – Dakabin,
Genesis, Bray Park etc. This option requires travel
each week and incurs a charge of $60 for this
semester. Summer season sports are basketball,
touch football, volleyball, and futsal. Selections for
these sports take place during the first week and
trials for these teams take place weeks 1, 2 and 3;
competition commences in week 4.
Parents and caregivers of Year 7 and 8 students will
receive an invitation to attend the Parent
Information Evening on Wednesday February 18 in
our Assembly Hall.
The evening will commence at 6:30pm with
entertainment provided by our Instrumental Music
Students.
The aim of the evening is to provide information
about expectations and special programs for our
Year 7 and 8 students this year. This will include

information about our Whole School Literacy and
Numeracy Program and the High Resolves Initiative
for Year 7 and 8.
Parents and caregivers will also be briefed
thoroughly about the requirements for our annual
Year 7 and 8 Camps to Moreton Island and meet
the PREP teacher assigned to their child’s class.
This is a valuable opportunity to share in your
child’s education partnership.

SPORT TRIAL DATES
At ‘the Pine’ students have the opportunity to trial
for a number of sports to represent the Pine Rivers
District or Metropolitan North Region. Here is some
important information you need to know regarding
this aspect of schooling life:
•
Students are to listen attentively to daily
notices in PREP to know what upcoming
trials are occurring.
•
The following Age Groups apply: 12 Years Boys
and Girls (students turning 12 in 2015), 15
Years Boys and Girls (students turning 15 or
under in 2015), 19 Years Boys and Girls
(students turning 19 or under in 2015)
•
If they are keen on trialling for a sport,
they must either come to the following
locations to collect a permission form.
Year 7, 8, 9 students are to come to the
Junior Secondary staffroom in T Block to
collect a permission form from Mr Rodger.
Year 10, 11, 12 students are to go to the

Hall

to

Students will only be allowed to trial after
consultation with the relevant teacher about
Our school celebrates ROSE DAY on the Friday
February 13 this year. During the week leading to
Rose Day students are able to order a rose (or
more) for a friend, a teacher or for themselves.
This is a nice way to express that we care for one
another.
This event is managed by the SRC
(Student Representative Council) and funds raised
will go to a Lion's event (A circus) run for
disadvantaged families. Single roses are sold for
$2.50 and students get to collect their rose on
Friday February 13. Please encourage your student
to participate in this long standing traditional event
at “The Pine”. For further information contact Julie

PROFILE OF OUR STAFF
JOANNE ORCHARD
Head of Faculty SOSE, Business and IT
Joanne Orchard is proudly the product of
Queensland State Education having attended
Brisbane State High School from 1976-1980. After
High School Joanne attended what was then known
as the Queensland Institute of Technology from
1981-1984 and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws
degree.
Say NO to bullying. Our school has a zero tolerance
for bullying.
Bullying is an ongoing misuse of
power in relationships through repeated verbal,
physical and/or social behaviour that causes
physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve
an individual or a group misusing their power over
one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person
or online, and it can be obvious or hidden
(http://bullyingnoway.gov.au/parents/facts/whatis-bullying.html). Please encourage your student to
report any kind of bullying behaviour to their
teacher, Head of Year (HOY), Deputy Principal or
BMC (Student Support Centre). If we don't know
it's happening we can't do something about it.
At our school, in March, the students will take a
pledge taking a stand against bullying.
The
awareness that this creates is a powerful tool in our
constant quest to stop bullying and harassment.

On Friday, we ask parents and carers to ensure that
students are dressed in their formal uniforms and
presented in a way that reflects Respect for the
school standards.

The School Office does not handle the photography
money. Unfortunately neither the school office
nor the photography staff will have change
available on the day, so please ensure that you

After graduation Joanne worked in private legal
practice from 1985 until 1988 helping clients in the
areas of family law and compensation for injury.
The next 10 years saw her working in community
legal centres helping clients who couldn’t afford a
solicitor in many different areas. Over these 10
years Joanne also had the chance to work to try
and convince governments of the need for law
reform in a number of different areas.
Although very interesting this work involved
interstate travel and this became more difficult
once Joanne had children. After taking advice and
doing some research she decided to re-train as a
teacher and returned to University in 1998.
After graduating Joanne was offered a position
teaching Legal Studies (of course!) at Dakabin
State High School and taught there until 2011. In
2012 she moved to Chancellor State College as
Head of Department of Humanities. Joanne has
been at Pine Rivers State High School for two years
and is currently enjoying the challenge of being the
Head of Faculty of Business, IT and Social Science.
Joanne is looking forward to working again with
Principal, John Schuh.
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL
(SRC) LEADERS INDUCTION
WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 18
On Wednesday February a day of induction for
Student Representative Council (SRC) leaders in
both the Junior and Senior school will take place at
school. These students have been selected to
represent the Students at our school and it is an
opportunity for them to put forward the ideas of
other students in their cohort.

On Wednesday February 25 all interested students
will meet for induction into the school's SRC. The
SRC is a band of students who are willing to make
our school an even better place. The students will
arrange some activities to support other students at
this school, our local community and the global
community. Quite often ex-school leaders from

primary schools are interested in joining us and we
are pleased to have these students who are able to
use their experience to help out in high school.
Please encourage your student to be involved in
this very important leadership part of their

Greetings all. I thought it timely to introduce or reintroduce myself, and welcome everybody to a
bright and shiny, brand new year. Strolling around
during first break today, reminds me how “bright
and shiny/ brand new” really is an appropriate
description.
concern around who will lead the School as Principal,
after such a long and successful administration
under Ms Janelle Deakin. Well both questions have
been answered. The Year 7s and 8s have begun
well, and Principal, John Shuh’s confidence, and
experience suggests they are in good hands as he
leads the outstanding staff team for which Pine
Rivers has become well known.
We’ve been talking about it for ages, and 2015 is
finally underway. The adventure lies before us, and
we’re in with both feet.
To parents, staff and
students, I wish you all the very best for a
monumental year. I’m glad to be on the journey
with you.

Did you know that you can make prepayment for
resource fees, camps and excursions or other
activities at any time? We can receipt your money
to your students account and it will remain as a
credit until it is required to be used. Upon request
the prepaid funds can be allocated to the
appropriate excursion, sport fee, resource fee etc.

P&C NEWS
There are dozens of Year 7 and 8 students milling
around in clusters (there’s safety in numbers I
guess) not really knowing what to do with
themselves in their crisp new uniforms. They’re
discussing all sorts of things, including where in the
school they might be able to settle come break time,
or which classes they prefer over others.
The
personal desks and tidy boxes are now history.
School bags have become a new appendage, no
longer just something to carry your lunch and hat in,
and leave in the “port racks” all day. Everything you
need to do at high school, is now on your back, or
over your shoulder, depending on which is the
popular way to carry it. Energy is high, as friends
re-connect after being apart for what seems like a
lifetime for some.
For others it wasn’t long enough. Although, I haven’t
spoken yet, with a student or staff member who
didn’t have a thoroughly refreshing holiday.
There seems to be real anticipation about the place.
For much of last year, a great deal of energy and
time was invested to planning and strategizing
around the “Junior Secondary question” and how
Year 7s would alter the landscape. Also, was the
Welcome to the new school year! A special warm
welcome to our new students and their families, our
new Principal and teachers.
The P&C Committee is a small band of parents that
meet monthly to discuss and share school
activities/events and services, most notably the
tuckshop, uniform shop, PRIMA (instrumental music
committee) and PRCAC (aquatics club) which the
P&C oversee. The meetings are a great way to learn
firsthand what goes on around the school and to
contribute ideas and express opinions on issues.
The last several years have seen a drop in parental
involvement that has meant the Executive has only
consisted of the minimum 3 position holders. At
least two of the 2014 Executive members will be
leaving at the upcoming AGM as their children have
graduated so we are in desperate need for new
position-holders as well as new general members.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 25 February at
7:00pm in the Staff Common Room (Admin building,
off Ash Court). Our Annual General Meeting

EUROPEAN STUDY TOUR
(1-19 January)
While most people were sweltering in Brisbane’s
heat during January, 22 nervous and excited
students and 3 teachers travelled to England and
France on the school’s second European Study Tour.
For many students it was their first time travelling
overseas and for a few, their first time on a plane!

During the 19 days of travel, the group spent about
a week exploring the sights of London including;
the Tower of London, St Paul’s Cathedral,
Buckingham Palace, Camden Markets and Oxford
Street, before heading to Amersham, northwest of
London.
Here, our students were hosted with
families from Dr Challoner’s Grammar School to
experience life in England. Positions at this school
are highly sought after, with students having to
achieve well on an entry exam to be enrolled, and
many graduates being accepted to study at Oxford
and Cambridge Universities. We were very proud
of the way our students embraced the challenge of
attending their host brothers’ classes during their
day at school, with some of them outperforming the
regular students! After nearly a week of bonding
with their families, there were some very teary
goodbyes as we boarded our bus to Dover for our
ferry ride to Calais, France.

PINE RIVERS STATE HIGH SCHOOL
SNOW TRIP ANNOUNCEMENT
On our first day in France, we were guided through
the Somme region, visiting some of the battlefields
of World War I including Villers Brettoneux and
Poziers.
The rain, sleet, snow, wind and cold
temperatures during the tour made the group
appreciate just how difficult conditions must have
been during the fighting a century ago. After the
tour we headed for Paris and spent the rest of the
trip exploring its famous attractions such as; the
Eiffel Tower (climbing all 669 steps), the Louvre (to
see the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo and many others),
the Avenue de Champs Elysees and Sacre Couer.
Students quickly learned to communicate with a
mix of “bonjour”, “mercis” and some sign language.
We celebrated the final night of the trip with a
dinner and reflected on the favourite (the hosting)
and least favourite (many, many steps) parts of the
journey. Europe Trippers – keep an eye on the
notices for our photo night in Week 5, Term 1.

The Pine Rivers State High School annual trip to the
snow for a week of skiing and snowboarding
departs for the Snowy Mountains Saturday July 4
and returns Saturday July 11..
We stay in
Jindabyne and ski and snowboard the Perisher
Resort.
The trip is open to students in Years 11 and 12.
Due to the nature of the trip, a behaviour check is
completed to ensure students have a proven ability
to comply with the expectations of our Behaviour
Contract.
The trip is organised and supervised by Pine Rivers
SHS staff who are all experienced skiers and snow

boarders. Lesson instructors are qualified and
accredited Perisher Snow Sports School instructors.
The snow package includes accommodation,
breakfast and dinner each day, ski hire, morning
and afternoon lessons, lift access, coach travel from
Brisbane to Jindabyne and back and daily transit to
and from Perisher.
Parent and Student Information Evening
The first of two information evenings will take place
in early February in the School Auditorium on
Gympie Rd. Dates will be advertised in the Rivers
Review Newsletter and through student information
meetings at school.
Everyone interested in or
planning to be on the snow trip is encouraged to
attend.

Camp permission and medical forms: will be
distributed during Friday 30th January PREP session.
These forms are due back by Friday 6th February
at the latest.
Attendance: Students unable to attend camp will
be required to develop and demonstrate leadership
& commitment through an alternative three day
program at school on the days of the camp.
Extended time to Pay: We understand payment
of the full cost by Thursday 12th February may be
difficult for some families. As it is desirable for all
Year 11s to attend camp, all parents are welcome
to call the School Registrar, Michael Sparks (07
3881 4750) if they wish to make a commitment to
pay off this amount. It is expected however, that
payment for other school activities such as
Resource Hire Scheme, would be met as part of this
arrangement.

2015 LEADERSHIP CAMP
Reminder to all parents and guardians of
current Year 11 students
As indicated in previous information that has come
home via your student last year, this camp will be
held at the Maranatha Recreation Campsite at
Yandina from Wednesday 25th – Friday 27th
February. The main aim of the camp is to “build
a strong, cohesive leadership team” with all
Year 11 students strongly encouraged to attend. It
is also a fantastic opportunity for new students to
the school to meet the rest of their year level peers.

Year 10 students enrolled at Pine Rivers State
High School are being offered treatment at the
Strathpine School Dental Clinic.
This clinic is
located in the grounds of Strathpine Primary School
adjacent to Pine Rivers State High School.
Students will need to cross the athletics oval and
walk through the gate adjoining the two schools. If
you wish your child to be treated please return the
fully completed consent form (4 pages) to your
class teacher as soon as possible. Once dental staff
receive a completed form your child will be
examined. Students from the other year levels will
be offered treatment after the Year 10 students are
treated. For any enquires please contact Dental
