We are delighted that our Lord has answered our prayer so quickly so as to continue on in the service of His Kingdom into 2015. Chris has been the Vicar of the Glen Innes Parish for the last 8 years and will start his ministry among us tomorrow. Of course, it will take some time before he settles in to the parish and gets to meet each of you personally, but I trust that in time the Lord will bless the work of the parish under his leadership. A commissioning service for Chris will be held at St Peter’s Cathedral, Armidale on Monday 2 nd March commencing at 6:30pm and will be followed by a light supper in the Parish Centre. All are welcome and signup sheets are available. As we complete our short series this week in Peter’s second letter, we are confronted with a central teaching of the Bible, the second coming of the Lord Jesus. This is not a topic we are often allowed to speak socially about with people, but here we are reminded that the knowledge of the second coming of Jesus ought to motivate us to live holy lives and to tell others of the saving work of Christ. As 2 Peter 3: 9b – 10a says, “The Lord...is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.” Many in Armidale will know, it is much better to be warned and prepared for a thief, than to experience the shock and insecurity of an unexpected event. Please pray for our community, that it might be prepared for the coming of ‘that Day’. In His service, Simon Reeve, Assistant to the Dean ~ Vale and Thank You ~ We record with regret the passing on 28th January of Dr Lionel Gilbert OAM, BA (Hons), Dip. Ed., PhD., Hon. D. Litt. (UNE), Centenary Medal, Freeman of the City of Armidale, school teacher, historian, botanist, lecturer, author, curator, Patron of the Armidale and District Historical Society. One of the University of New England’s first external graduates, he was Research and Information Officer for its External Studies Department and was integral to the development of several local museums, including UNE’s Museum of Education, the Hillgrove Museum, the Armidale Folk Museum and St Peter’s Cathedral Tower Museum. A leading lecturer in history at Armidale Teachers’ College, he was also for a time Acting Deputy Principal. In retirement he continued researching and writing, particularly in the field of natural history. With his wife Margaret he has been a member of the congregation of St Mary’s, West Armidale. They met and married when both were newly-qualified school teachers, in Nabiac. He and Margaret and their daughter, Anne, moved to Armidale when Lionel took up his appointment to the Teachers’ College. Among his many local history and community achievements he was instrumental, with others, in the restoration which led to the re-opening of St Nicholas’, Saumarez Ponds, now the oldest church in the Diocese where services are still regularly held. He was renowned for his generous encouragement and mentoring of others. In St Peter’s Cathedral on 4th February a capacity gathering from all walks of life gave thanks for Dr Gilbert’s life and work. The service was conducted by the Reverend Bill Howarth, who noted three of Lionel’s defining qualities as scholar, gentleman and churchman. The eulogy was given by John Harris, retired fellow academic and colecturer with Lionel at Armidale Teachers’ College. Dr Gilbert’s publications, including An Armidale Album among other works on historical and botanical subjects, are recognised for the excellence of his research and presentation. Amen. THE COLLECT FOR ASH WEDNESDAY Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing that you have made, and you forgive the sins of all who are penitent: create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain from you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Pray for Chris and Sam, with their children Patrick, Natalie and Andrew, as they settle into school and life in Armidale, and as renovations are completed at the Deanery.
