February 28, 2015 - The Oklahoma
Fellowship of Catholic Men will be
hosting the 19th Annual Catholic Men’s
Conference, “In the Father’s Footsteps” on
Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the Embassy
Suites Conference Center in North Norman,
Oklahoma. For years, men have been
coming to this day of learning, reflecting and fellowship…walking
away with encouragement and enlightenment that we are able to be
men of faith in our families, with our friends, and in our work
locations. We learn through the talks how we can be better
husbands, dads, step-dads, sons and grandfathers. The conference
entwines Sacraments and sacramental traditions into the day’s
events with opportunities for Reconciliation administered by the
priests of the Archdiocese and the opportunity to celebrate the
Eucharist with our very own Archbishop Coakley at the close of
the conference.
Our theme for this year’s conference, “Forged by Grace,”
continues our venue of building and sustaining solid relationships
in our daily lives. We have 4 great main session speakers that will
provide us with the right tools to persevere and thrive in our faith
journey. The cost for all the day’s activities (including lunch,
snacks, beverages and admission to all presentations) is $55 prior
to February 2nd and $65 from February 3rd through on-site
registration. High School students can register anytime for $29.
College Students can register anytime at $39. More info on our
speakers and agenda can be found in the brochures, or online at
www.catholicmen.net, or call Allen Smith at 405-249-7705.

with Reconciliation beginning at approximately 2:00pm.
Father Charles Buckley from St. Gregory's Abbey in Shawnee will
be presenting a Lenten Retreat at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish.
The morning session will be on the Humility of Lent and the
afternoon session will be on the Joy of Lent. A light lunch will be
provided. The Retreat will conclude with opportunity for the
Sacrament of Reconciliation. All are welcome. Please preregister
with Ann Grim (405-240-7328) so that we will be able to have an
accurate number for the lunch.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------The date for this year's Woman of Achievement Luncheon is
March 14, 2015 at St. Joseph Parish, 211 N. Porter,
Norman. Registration will be from 10:00 am to 10:45 am in the
Parish Center, 421 E. Acres, located one block north of the
church. Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. and lunch will
follow in the Parish Center. Archbishop Coakley will be
presenting each WOA with her medal. Because of restricted space
at the St. Joseph Parish Center, the CRCCW has
limited reservations to seven guests this year. The cost for the
luncheon is $20. Please notify Camilla at 258-2822 or e-
mail camillaschu@aol.com no later than Tuesday
March 10 if you would like to attend.

WOMAN OF ACHIEVEMENT
If ever a person could make a silk purse
out of a sow’s ear, our OLS WOA can.
She is a delightfully innovative, keenly
insightful and exceptionally creative
woman who takes pleasure in turning
something ordinary into something
extraordinary. She has a natural gift to
see things from a deeper perspective –
in both the physical and the spiritual
sense, in an almost ethereal way. As
for leisure time, she is an avid reader and enjoys collecting old
Christmas books. Her joy for photography is another outlet for her
creative expression as it beckons her to capture in one flash, those
once-in-a-lifetime moments of daily life, or catch just the right
light on one of those awesome-inspiring revelations of God’s
glorious handiwork. Floral design is yet another delight for her.
She is a peace maker, a problem solver, and a wise soul by
nature -- her loving, caring heart automatically reaches out to
others-- to encourage, to assist in whatever way, to help work
through the tough times --- in the good times – she shares her
happy spirit, infectious laughter and genuine goodwill for all. She
is a source of strength, encouragement and constancy to her family
~ an awesome wife and mom, a favorite aunt among her nieces
and nephews, and a treasure to behold among her friends.
She was born April 19, 1958 to parents Arthur and Alberta
Roberts. Sadly, her father passed away in 2013. She and her 2
sisters and brother were raised in south OKC. In the 10th grade her
family relocated to Bethel Acres and she attended school there
until her senior year. After graduation she attended Seminole Jr.
College, then went on to the University of Central Oklahoma,
earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Commercial Art with a minor
in Journalism. While working part-time as a student at the CR
Anthony Department Store in Shawnee, she met a handsome
young man who would become her husband on October 11, 1983,
and is her lifetime sweetheart. At the time they married, she was
working for the Department of Education in OKC and Rick was
working as Manager for the Murcer Family Jewelry Store in
Chandler.
God knew the kind, loving, dedicated and caring parents they
would be when on December 14, 1994, a special child was born to
them, whom they named Josh. Josh was diagnosed with autism.
Darla set out on a mission and became a passionate Autism
Awareness Advocate. She attended seminars, classes, and
workshops – educating herself about autism diagnostics and the
cutting edge teachings of UCLA’s then clinical psychologist, Dr.
Ivar Lovaas. She set up numerous workshops and learning
programs through the years, and continues to provide home
schooling for Josh. She remains very active in walk-a-thons and
fundraising to promote Autism Awareness. Without question, the
center of the universe in Rick and Darla’s life is Josh - the most
precious gift they have ever received.
In 1997 they purchased Murcer’s Jewelry Store from the
Murcer family and have owned and operated this enterprise ever
since. The store is a happy place for patrons, and as one would
expect, every holiday Darla adds her special sparkling dab of
decorum to light up the store.
She is a convert to Catholicism and embraces the Church, and
this parish in particular, as God-treasures in her life. The love she
has for our parish family is evidenced by her ever-ready
willingness to give unselfishly of herself, her time and her talents.
She is currently serving as the fundraising chairperson for the Altar
Society and in years past, served as Secretary. She is a member of
the Remembering Team and a Calling Captain for the Prayer
Chain. She has spent untold hours helping cook meals or making
ambient and festive décor a reality for occasions of celebration.
Her tireless efforts, creative prowess and flare for making a space
glisten have on many occasions made an otherwise drab and lackluster parish hall light up like sun dancing on the water!
Today she is the SPARKLE of the moment. Today, we give
her our sincerest thank you, our appreciation and our love! Today I
could not be more proud to present to you the 2015, 51st Our Lady
of Sorrows Woman of Achievement -- Darla Melson.

For the Poor
Lenten observance:
Who must fast? – All Catholics who are
between the ages of 18 – 59. The
obligation ceases when one begins their
60th year.
Who must abstain? – All Catholics who
are 14 or older.
What does fasting mean? – The
observance of fasting means that those
obliged may take only one full meal on the day of fast. Two
lighter meals (not equal to another full meal) are permitted if
necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs. Eating
solid foods between meals is not permitted.
What does abstinence mean? – The law of abstinence forbids the
eating of meat; Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat.
Other voluntary acts of self-denial are encouraged during this
penitential season.
Can anyone be dispensed or excused from fast &/or
abstinence?
Individuals with just cause may be dispensed by a priest. Those
who are ill or have similar serous reason are excused from the
observance of fast & abstinence. Catholics are reminded that they
should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation and if
they do so, they then need to compensate with prayer & other
voluntary acts of penance.

February 22, 2015 - First Sunday of Lent
The waters of Baptism make us part of the new covenant in Christ.
But the bishops’ pastoral letter on stewardship reminds us that
“there is a fundamental obligation arising from the Sacrament of
Baptism. . . that people place their gifts, their resources — their
selves — at God’s service in and through the Church.”
