Theme: Reform your lives! Listen to the Word As you hear this very short Gospel reading, what words or phrases strike you? What image or story does the reading prompt you to recall? Dear Parishioners, It is my hope you are finding the “Lent Survival Kit” helpful in these early days of Lent. During this season we focus more of our efforts on fasting and prayer as an opportunity to focus on our human frailty and the beauty and awe of Christ’s saving power. As Jesus tells us in the gospel reading, we are to “repent and believe in the gospel.” But making his command a reality involves much more of the heart than the head. In fact, for each of us, this belief in the gospel requires a life actively lived in imitation of Jesus who gave himself up for death for the sake of others. This does not mean that we will be called to die a martyr’s death as many of our Christian sisters and brothers in the Middle East. But our lives ought to be lived for others. At Creation, God entrusted everything to us. As His stewards, we strive to give ourselves in service for others — at home, in our parish, at work, at school and elsewhere. The life of a Christian disciple, as Christ so radically shows us, is a life of self-giving in charity. This sounds like a lot of work. But you know what was a lot of work, the Cross! It was far from easy. Christ suffered the most unthinkable agony, but in his resurrection he experienced the most tremendous victory. We give of ourselves like Christ did, knowing that we look forward to the glory of eternal life. The reward of a Christian steward far surpasses the effort it takes to live this way; it far surpasses any hardships we experience along the way. As stewards, then, we live for others and we call others to do the same, proclaiming the good news that Christ has come to save. All we need to do is “repent and believe in the gospel.” Please don’t forget to return your 2015 CSA commitment card. The parish and the Bishop rely upon the support of every one of us to carry out the ministry of Jesus Christ and His Disciples. Thank you for your support to 2015 CSA. Look into Our Lives Question for Children: What will you do this Lent to become more like Jesus Question for Youth: Lent gives us a chance to do things differently – to "go to the desert." How can you make Lent a time for growing in faith? Question for Adults: What is the one area of your life which you most want to "reform" as you get ready to emSource: www.osv.com brace the Gospel, what is it? Wishing everyone a good week, Father Joe Callipare Fasting is required of all over the age 18 through the completion of the 59th year on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means not taking any food in between meals, and having smaller and simpler meals. Abstinence from meat is required of all over the age of 14 on Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.
