Pastoral Patterns ~ March 1, 2015 ~ 2nd Sunday of Lent
Genesis 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18 -The sacrifice of Abraham, our father in faith.
Psalm 116 - “I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.”
Romans 8:31b-34 - God did not spare his own Son.
Mark 9:2-10 -This is my beloved Son.
Even though God spared Abraham’s son, Isaac, God’s own Son, Jesus, was not spared, but rather
was handed over for the benefit of us all. Yet already today’s Gospel gives us a hint of the resurrection to come. As we listen to these readings, let us take time to ponder what “rising from the dead”
means in our own lives..
Question of the week: Where will my “leaving the mountain” with Jesus take me this week? What
form will my self-sacrificing service and unconditional love take?

Introduction to the Liturgy of the Day
Every year on the second Sunday of
Lent we hear the story of Jesus'
transfiguration from one of the
Gospels. With our Lenten journey so
briefly under way, we may need the
encouragement of what lies ahead that
the Transfiguration story gives us.
As Jesus was transfigured and
ultimately triumphant over death, so
may our prayer today be that we too
will be transformed.

MARDI GRAS was enjoyed by many parishioners and friends.
Thanks to all who helped make this years Mardi Gras a success and
to all who attended this gala event.

The Spring 40 Days for Life Campaign began on Ash Wednesday
and will go to Sunday March 29, 2015. The Closing Ceremony is
scheduled for Sunday March 29, 2015 at noon at NE 116th Ave in front
of the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic, 11516 SE Mill Plain Suite
2E, Vancouver. Please plan to join for at least 1 hour one day a week
to help save babies. The 40 Days for Life campaigns are a Peaceful,
Prayerful, and Presence outside the abortion clinics.

Regulations for Fast and Abstinence
Ash Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015, and Good Friday, April 3, 2015, are
days of fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. Fasting is to be observed by all eighteen years of age and older,
who have not yet celebrated their sixtieth birthday. On a fast day one
full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength,
may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should
not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted,
but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Abstinence is
observed by all fourteen years of age and older. On days of abstinence
no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be
seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning
fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted. Fasting,
almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent.
The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for Baptism or of renewal of Baptism at Easter.
