CONGRATULATIONS JUNE !
As many of you will know June Brown
has been awarded The British Empire Medal
in the
New Years honours list for services to the local community. We are
delighted June has been given this well deserved award.She has been
a loyal, faithful and much appreciated member of the church family at
St Mary's for many years. Her voluntary duties have included being
church treasurer for 20 years always keeping the books in apple pie
order. June lends a willing hand with many essential jobs such as
cleaning, tea and coffee making, cake baking and many other jobs. If a
job needs doing June will say"Don't worry I’ll do it.!!”
As well as this June and her family allow the church and other
organisations to use their barn and fields for community activities and
June is always on hand to help. She is very involved with the village
hall and all activities going on there including coffee mornings, ‘stitch
and knit’, the gardening club and more. June continues to keep contact
with her original home village of Bickington where for many years she
has been active in running the Tuesday Club there.
Well done June, we all appreciate your hard work.You deserve a

Coming soon: CAP Money course.
This is a free course for anyone who wants to be in better control of their
finances. Whether you feel you are spending too much, not saving as much as
you would like, or you simply don’t know where all your money goes, you could
benefit from this course. It will teach you budgeting skills and a simple cashbased system to help you control your spending, prevent debt and save for the
things which are important to you. The course will run over three evenings in
either late February or March at a local venue to be decided. For further

Dear friends,
You will be familiar with the
WW2 slogan “Keep calm and
carry on”, if not heartily sick of
its many derivatives, but it
seems appropriate this month.
February is often a month to
endure, hoping for spring, sick
of winter.
It’s easy to let our problems
obscure our hope. The Church
of England will be in the
headlines this month as
General Synod debates
various new measures to
tackle the problem of long-term decline in
numbers and financial pressures.
We have our own problems as a
benefice. The PCC at Bovey reluctantly
decided in January that we should not
reduce our reserves below £20,000, and
therefore we will give £10,000 less than
the £77,000 requested by the Diocese for
Common Fund in 2014. We have offered
to give them the Elizabethan pewter and
Jacobean chair, which we tried to sell last
year, but which the Diocese refused
permission. The PCC has set a balanced
budget for 2015, but this will make it very
difficult to recruit a new worker for our
work with families and children. These
issues will be debated at Deanery Synod
and the next PCC in full.
But as Corporal Jones said, “Don’t
panic!” We have one priceless asset
which the world does not possess- the
treasure of the gospel. Jesus Christ is the
eternal word, the light of the world, who
died and rose and lives for ever. When
the disciples recognised him, they
followed. As we study the story of Jonah
this month, we find that God follows and
pursues us in relentless love and mercy,
even when we disobey. God is
determined to keep his church
shining as a light to his world.
So we keep calm and carry
on.
A new group of adults has
begun preparation for baptism
and confirmation on Sunday
evenings- it’s not too late to
join if you wish to renew your
faith.
We continue to address the
problems of our buildings. The
Changing Church course
continues this month, and we
will be revising the Mission Action Plan
and beginning a community survey to
refine and support our plans.
There is work to be done in
implementing health and safety policy
and safe recruiting, so that we meet
current legislation. This is not exciting, but
it is necessary- please co-operate with
the church wardens as we do this.
We continue to consult over the
best way of encouraging young families
to worship with us and grow in faith
Lent begins this month, and the
joint churches Lent course is called “Six
Steps to loving your church”. A list of
groups is printed on page 10, as also are
details of a free course produced by
Christians against Poverty in managing
your finances. I am grateful to Phil
Stocker for offering to lead this.
We don’t need to panic: we need to
keep calm and carry on - not blindly in a
way that doesn’t work, but with humility to
learn, and renew our commitment to
follow Jesus and love and serve one
another.

Nothing in this conversation can be
taboo, it will be hard for you and for
them but must be done. So how do
I do it?
Living with Cancer - Allan
Butterfield
What can I say about living with
cancer? I could say it’s like living with
your spouse or partner, i.e some
days are better than others. You
might think this is flippant and wrong
but this sort of attitude will in my view
help you to live as normal a life as
you can given the circumstances.
Anybody who has been told they
have cancer will react differently to
the news, each dealing with it
differently too.
• Quite simply think of the cancer
as an issue you have to deal with
like any other issue that may
arise.
• Remember from now, it’s more
about the people around you
than yourself.
• Look at all the options the
consultant gives you and decide
which way to go, after which do
not thin or dwell on it.
• Treat each day as a gift and go
about your business as usual (i.e.
don’t let it interfere).
• Most importantly discuss with
your family all aspects of your
life, you will be surprised how
much they don’t know that you
thought they did.
• What policies are in your name
only, can they be changed?
• Do you want to be cremated or
buried and where?
• Bank accounts: are they in your
name? If so, access after death
for your partner will be difficult.
• Energy agreement? Again the
same thing applies as for the
banks.
• Do you need to give power of
attorney to your partner?
• What hymns do you like, would
like played at your service?
I was told in a most unceremonious
way, it was for the examining
consultant a eureka moment: “Ah,
you have a tumour and it is
cancerous!” So he was pleased why? Well, for him there was a
problem, he found it and had a
solution: “We’ll operate in 2-3 weeks
time”. Later, whilst waiting to go
home at least three people came to
see me to ask if I wanted to talk. My
answer each time was no as I
already knew what was coming next.
Shortly after that I was asked to go
for a scan, the results of which
changed everything as the scan
revealed it had spread to quite a few
places, which in turn meant that it
was now terminal rather than
curable. So now you really are going
to live with it and at this point it is
essential that you talk openly and
freely with your spouse and family

The Leprosy Mission.
The Leprosy Mission is an
international and interdenominational
Christian medical mission which has
been caring for leprosy sufferers
since 1874. We at PPT have not
been supporting it that long, but all
the help this church and
congregation gives helps LMS to
minister, in the name of Jesus Christ,
to the physical, mental and spiritual
needs of the sufferers of leprosy.
Recently a mother of 4 has been
helped, by our donations, to receive
a wheelchair which has completely
changed her life, and the lives of her
children. She can now work and care
for her children and is hoping to have
prosthetic limbs fitted soon. Another
woman has had life-changing surgery
on her deformed hand, five weeks
after that surgery she has regain
partial mobility in her hand. All this
thanks to LMS.
Life changing work like this happens
in several countries in the world,
people with leprosy are still
ostracised, as they were in Jesus’
day, which is soul destroying for both
the sufferer and their families.
Leprosy is treatable, but treatment
needs to be started before bone
deformity happens. The LMS not only
provides the drugs to treat the
disease it provides education,
prosthesis, local health care,
rehabilitation programmes and social
and spiritual support for the sufferer,

their family and their community.
The money you as a congregation
raised, in 2014 in excess of £463,
through ‘Lent Boxes’, saving used
stamps, buying Christmas Cards and
donating in other ad hoc ways all
helped to make this life-changing
work possible. So thank you all.
I took over, from Olive Bradburn, as
PPT representative in July this year,
and I am grateful for the support you
have all given me since then.
Hopefully I can rely on your
continued support in the coming year.
Jeremiah 30:17- ‘but I will restore you
to health and heal your wounds,
‘declares the Lord, ‘because you are
called an outcast’.
Let us all continue to support this
worthwhile charity so leprosy
sufferers will feel ‘outcasts’ no more.

Volunteer Opportunities
Various opportunities exist within the church for people to serve within the
church and wider community. Currently we would like more people who
would be willing to lead prayers, do the bible reading or help with serving
coffee at the Sunday 10am service. Rotas are produced for a four months
period and you can specify how often you would like to be included. If you
think you could help please contact the church office.

You may well have said things like
‘why me?’ I don’t smoke! I eat
healthily. Why has God let this
happen, etc. Guess what? No one
is to blame, not you and certainly
not God. Faith and prayer is
fundamental for me to live
normally. I am on the prayer list
and recently someone asked me if
I was getting better. They did not
know what was wrong; a small
thing you might say but can be
huge when confronted, making
them uneasy and probably no
idea what to say now. This is my
(your) job, to talk freely about it, to
enable people to feel comfortable
around you.
knowledge that God was going to
be beside me every step of the
way, it also gave my family
strength. Daily prayer is also
important talking to God letting
Him know how you feel, asking for
those around you to be supported
in any way they need. Maybe one
aspect of dealing with cancer is
the only difference between not
knowing and knowing is that you
know your meeting with God will
be sooner than you had expected,
however you could have been
crossing the road an ‘bang’ - that’s
you gone! So don’t dwell on death
but rejoice in life that God has
given us all.
