Whether you are baptised in another Christian denomination or unbaptised, you are welcome to inquire into the Catholic faith. Parishioners are asked to invite friends, neighbours and family members to consider journeying towards full entry into the Catholic Church. Pope Francis writes “Our Church doors should always be open, so if someone, moved by the Spirit, comes there looking for God, he or she will not find a closed door. In the Church there is a place for everyone”. Please contact the parish office for further information - 9557 1815. TEMPE CHURCH MASS CHANGES As people may be aware due to the decline of clergy and future twining of parishes, there needs to be a consolidation of masses. Back in 1989 when Tempe was twinned with Enmore the initial plan was to make use of the Tempe Parish site for other Archdiocesan work. On average 22 people attend Tempe church on Sundays. Unfortunately, we can no longer sustain a regular Sunday mass. Therefore, in consultation with the Archbishop and Auxiliary Bishops over the past three years, we have decided that commencing on Sunday 5 April (end of daylight saving) mass at Ss. Peter & Paul Church Tempe will be held at 8AM ON THE FIRST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH ONLY. PROJECT COMPASSION The Project Compassion envelopes and boxes are available for collection on the bulletin table. Money raised from this appeal will go towards various projects throughout the world to help those less fortunate. First Reconciliation Dates Enrolment for Reconciliation is offered for children who have reached the age of discretion. The Church regards this as around 7 years of age, but it is up to parents to decide when their child is ready. The child must also have received the sacrament of baptism. Parent Information Session Saturday 7 March at 3:30pm - St. Pius V Church Please bring a copy of the child’s baptism certificate (must be baptised Catholic) and the program fee of $15 to this meeting. Enrolment forms will be handed out and will need to be filled in and handed back before leaving. The information session will be followed by the presentation of candidates at the 5pm Vigil mass. Class Saturday 14 March at 3pm - St. Pius School Hall First Reconciliation Date Saturday 21 March at 3:30pm - St. Pius V Church Certificates will be handed out this same day during the 5pm vigil mass. (Please Note: There is no retreat day for the Sacrament of First Reconciliation) All the above dates must be attended by both children and at least one parent/carer. Above all it is a “time of grace” (2 Cor6:2). God does not ask of us anything that he himself has not first given us. “We love because he first has loved us” (1 Jn 4:19). He is not aloof from us. Each one of us has a place in his heart. He knows us by name, he cares for us and he seeks us out whenever we turn away from him. He is interested in each of us; his love does not allow him to be indifferent to what happens to us. Usually, when we are healthy and comfortable, we forget about others (something God the Father never does): we are unconcerned with their problems, their sufferings and the injustices they endure… Our heart grows cold. As long as I am relatively healthy and comfortable, I don’t think about those less well off. Today, this selfish attitude of indifference has taken on global proportions, to the extent that we can speak of a globalization of indifference. It is a problem which we, as Christians, need to confront. God is not indifferent to our world; he so loves it that he gave his Son for our salvation. In the Incarnation, in the earthly life, death, and resurrection of the Son of God, the gate between God and man, between heaven and earth, opens once for all. The Church is like the hand holding open this gate, thanks to her proclamation of God’s word, her celebration of the sacraments and her witness of the faith which works through love (cf. Gal 5:6). But the world tends to withdraw into itself and shut that door through which God comes into the world and the world comes to him. Hence the hand, which is the Church, must never be surprised if it is rejected, crushed and wounded. During this Lent, then, brothers and sisters, let us all ask the Lord: “Fac cor nostrum secundum cor tuum”: Make our hearts like yours (Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus). In this way we will receive a heart which is firm and merciful, attentive and generous, a heart which is not closed, indifferent or prey to the globalization of indifference. It is my prayerful hope that this Lent will prove spiritually fruitful for each believer and every ecclesial community. I ask all of you to pray for me. May the Lord bless you and Our Lady keep you. TODAY’S LITURGY anything he can give. Could anyone accuse those that God has chosen? When God acquits, could anyone condemn? Could Christ Jesus? No! He not only died for us – he rose from the dead, and there at God’s right hand he stands and pleads for us. The Word of the Lord First Reading Gn 22:1-2. 9-13. 15-18 A reading from the book of Genesis God put Abraham to the test. ‘Abraham, Abraham,’ he called.’ Here I am’ he replied. ‘Take your son,’ God said ‘your only child Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him as a burnt offering, on a Gospel Acclamation Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ! mountain I will point out to you.’ From the shining cloud, the Father’s voice is heard: this is my beloved Son, hear him. When they arrived at the place God had pointed out to Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ! him, Abraham built an altar there, and arranged the wood. Then he bound his son Isaac and put him on the altar on Gospel Mk 9:2-10 top of the wood. Abraham stretched out his hand and A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark seized the knife to kill his son. Jesus took with him Peter and James and John and led them up a high mountain where they could be alone by But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven. ‘Abraham, Abraham’ he said. ‘I am here’ he replied. ‘Do not themselves. There in their presence he was transfigured: his clothes became dazzlingly white, whiter than any earthly raise your hand against the boy’ the angel said. ‘Do not bleacher could make them. Elijah appeared to them with harm him, for now I know you fear God. You have not refused me your son, your only son.’ Then looking up, Abra- Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. Then Peter spoke ham saw a ram caught by its horns in a bush. Abraham took to Jesus. ‘Rabbi,’ he said ‘it is wonderful for us to be here; the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. so let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ He did not know what to say; they were so frightened. And a cloud came, covering them in shadow; The angel of the Lord called Abraham a second time from heaven. ‘I swear by my own self – it is the Lord who speaks and there came a voice from the cloud, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him.’ Then suddenly, when they looked – because you have done this, because you have not refused me your son, your only son, I will shower blessings on round, they saw no one with them any more but only Jesus. As they came down from the mountain he warned them to you, I will make your descendants as many as the stars of tell no one what they had seen, until after the Son of Man heaven and the grains of sand on the seashore.
