TEMPE CHURCH MASS CHANGES
As people may be aware due to the decline of clergy and
future twining of parishes, there needs to be a consolidation
of masses. Back in 1989 when Tempe was twinned with
Enmore the initial plan was to make use of the Tempe Parish site for other Archdiocesan work. On average 22 people
attend Tempe church on Sundays. Unfortunately, we can no
longer sustain a regular Sunday mass. Therefore, in consultation with the Archbishop and Auxiliary Bishops over the
past three years, we have decided that commencing on
Sunday 5 April (end of daylight saving) mass at Ss. Peter &
Paul Church Tempe will be held at 8AM ON THE FIRST
SUNDAY OF THE MONTH ONLY.
PROJECT COMPASSION
The Project Compassion envelopes and boxes are available
for collection on the bulletin table. Money raised from this
appeal will go towards various projects throughout the world
to help those less fortunate.

ALTAR SERVERS
Parents who have a child who has made his/her First Holy
Communion and is interested in becoming an altar server
please speak to Fr Martin or Jean Cusack after mass.
WELCOME
This Saturday we welcome the children who are preparing
to receive the Sacrament of First Reconciliation. During the
vigil mass they will be presented to the community as candidates for the sacrament.
OPEN DAY CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
Families are invited to visit St Pius' Catholic Primary School
during Catholic Schools Week on Wednesday 11 March for
a free BBQ breakfast from 8:15am and then all families are
welcome to walk through the school with open classrooms
from 9:15am to 10am. If your child is starting school in
2016 enrolment forms will be available.
PARISH OFFICE
The parish office will close at 3:30pm on Thursday 2 April
(Holy Thursday) and will reopen on Tuesday 21 April. During this period the parish bulletin will be printed in advance
and therefore any mass intentions passed on to Fr Martin
will not be placed in the bulletin until the weekend of 25/26

SENIORS MASS AT ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL

24 HOURS FOR THE LORD
FRI 13TH – SAT 14TH MARCH
In response to Pope Francis’ Lenten call to participate in 24
hours of Adoration and Reconciliation on Friday 13th and
Saturday 14th March, St Mary’s Cathedral will make the
“Lady Chapel” available from midday on Friday 13th March
until midday on Saturday 14th March. Continuous Adoration
and the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available
throughout this time except for Mass times (1:10pm &
5:30pm Friday, 9am Saturday). The 24 Hours will culminate
with the regular Saturday midday Mass. After hours access
will be through the Eastern doors. Various groups will facilitate times of Adoration with prayer and/or music. This is an
evangelisation event so bring a friend to this gentle time of
prayer and encounter with Christ’s love and mercy! For a

LENTEN PENANCE
1. Abstinence from meat, and fasting, are to be
observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
All who have completed their 18th year and
have not yet begun their 60th year are bound
to fast. All who have completed their 14th year
are bound to abstain.
2. On all other Fridays of the year, including
the Fridays of Lent, the law of the common
practice of penance is fulfilled by performing
any one of the following:
A. Prayer – Mass attendance; family prayer; a
visit to a church or chapel; reading the Bible;
making the Stations of the Cross; praying the
rosary.
B. Self-denial – not eating meat; not eating
sweets or dessert; giving up entertainment to
spend time with the family; limiting food and
drink so as to give to the poor of one’s own
country.
C. Helping others – special attention to someone who is poor, sick, elderly, lonely or overburdened.
Lent lasts from Ash Wednesday (18 February)
to the Mass of the Lord’s Supper exclusive (2
April). On Good Friday and, if possible, also on
Holy Saturday until the Easter Vigil, the Easter
Fast is observed.
PASCHAL PRECEPT
Each of the faithful is obliged to receive Holy
Communion at least once a year.
This is to be done between Ash Wednesday 18
February and Trinity Sunday 31 May unless for
a good reason it is done at another time during
the year. All the faithful are obliged to confess
their grave sins at least once a year.

God spoke all these words. He said, ‘I am the Lord your
God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the
house of slavery. You shall have no gods except me.

Just before the Jewish Passover Jesus went up
to Jerusalem, and in the Temple he found people selling
cattle and sheep and pigeons, and the money changers
sitting at their counters there. Making a whip out of some
cord, he drove them all out of the Temple, cattle and sheep
as well, scattered the money changers’ coins, knocked their
tables over and said to the pigeon-sellers, ‘Take all this out
of here and stop turning my Father’s house into a market.’

for your house will devour me. The Jews intervened and
said, ‘What sign can you show us to justify what you have

A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians
While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks look for
wisdom, here are we preaching a crucified Christ; to the
Jews an obstacle that they cannot get over, to the pagans
madness, but to those who have been called, whether they
are Jews or Greeks, a Christ who is the power and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human
wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human
strength.
