It was a delight to formally recognise our students at the Investiture Ceremony this week. I congratulate both Zara and Darcy on their inspiring speeches and look forward to the many suggestions they may have to improve Ascot State School. Thank you also to all students who supported the Book Swap last week. I'm very keen to see some of the imaginative stories from our children following last week's author visits. Have you noticed the pirates are coming? There is a real buzz around the school this week as we have welcomed Dr Cameron Stelzer to the school. Regards Student Opinion Survey Data 2014 Overall the student opinion survey data was once again extremely high with students being very satisfied with the wonderful education they are receiving at Ascot State School. Below are some of our students' opinions: My teachers encourage me to do my best 100% My school looks for ways to improve 99% I am getting a good education at this school 98% My English skills are being developed at this school 99% My Maths skills are being developed at this school 98% I feel safe at this school 97% My teachers provide me with useful feedback about my school work 97% Next week we are very fortunate to have Dr Andrew Martin at the school again. His work informs our Student Success and Wellbeing Program conducted by our wonderful Deanne Clark. Dr Martin will be presenting to Ascot State School parents next Wednesday 4 March and I hope many of you can make the time to attend his presentation. He will also be presenting to all Ascot State School staff in the afternoon. Thank you to all the parents who attended the Reading workshops over the past two weeks with Mrs Melissa Provost-Boyle. We have an excellent reading program and parent support with reading to and with children is vital for success at school. FROM YOUR P&C Thank you to all the new parents and staff who attended our first P&C meeting last week. I hope we continue to see you all at future meetings, along with further new faces. March 18 is our next meeting and it is our Annual General Meeting in the hall at 7.30pm. At this meeting, all positions will be vacated and elections held. Please see and read the attached Notice that is required to be given at least 14 days prior to the meeting. Thankfully the weather was kind to us but more importantly our high expectations of our students were realised once again. City Cluster Moderation Year 3B As a school we consistently moderate student learning across year levels to monitor progress and to inform future learning for students. Teachers on each year level discuss and assess their students’ progress and together discuss strategies to support maximum progress for all students. They will issue fines to those who disregard the parking and no stopping rules around the school in our united aim to make drop-off and pick-up time the safest it can possibly be. We will never apologise for our insistence that our children’s safety is the main concern. For the sake of all our children please observe all road rules and information regularly published in the Digest. Assemblies begin Our 3 to 6 assemblies start on Monday and we look forward to 5B starting the ball rolling. Teachers can allocate tasks for students to complete or students can sign on and complete activities to gain extra knowledge, skills and application of content. The cost for the Mathletics subscription has been added to the term accounts. It will be utilised at times by teachers at school, for home activities or to supplement home learning. Please keep your child's sign on details in a safe place for reference. The teachers examined Maths assessment tasks to determine the level of skill demonstrated by the student, using a judgement guide. This was done with groups from different schools to ensure that there was agreement on the Australian curriculum standards and their assessment, across the cluster. Children are a buzz with excitement for the different authors who have been working with them. Arrr me hearties, thar be pirates in the school! Our author in residence, Cameron Stelzer, is working with students across all year levels: Prep and Year 1 students will enjoy a Big Screen Book Reading with Cameron Years 2 and 3 will work on Inspirational Ideas Years 4, 5 and 6 will work on Descriptive Writing. On Wednesday we’ll celebrate our Author in Residence Week with a Pirate Day. Everyone is invited to dress up. Thank you to Lorraine Clacher, 6/5 Teacher, who has organised Authors from Ascot and our Author in Residence Week. It has been a true celebration of writing. This week our school has been involved in a School Accreditation process through Australasian School Accreditation Agency (ASAA). Otto is twelve weeks old and has already begun his training. He will stay with the Jorgensen family for the next 12 to 18 months. Otto will be entering the school grounds during drop off and pick up times. He will always be on a lead and identified as a Seeing Eye Dog puppy in training by the bright blue coat he wears when training/working. While Otto is wearing his blue coat it means he can’t be patted by adults or children. The blue coat signals that he is working. Melissa Provost-Boyle, Deputy Principal FROM ANGELA DAWSON The Art and Science of Teaching - Robert Marzano (ASOT) Ascot’s Pedagogical Framework is organised around The Art and Science of Teaching (Marzano 2007). It is a comprehensive 4 framework for effective instruction. This model ensures quality teaching that balances the necessity of research-based data with the equally vital need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of individual students. Teachers make an enormous difference in promoting the academic success of all learners. Three components are necessary for effective classroom pedagogy: 1. sustained use of research-based effective instructional strategies; 2. ongoing use of effective management strategies to promote a true community of learning within the classroom; 3. use of effective classroom curriculum design strategies. Students should clearly understand the purpose of what they are learning and why they are learning it. Students should track their own progress and assess how they are progressing toward proficiency and advanced competence relative to clearly-articulated learning goals. Effective teaching and learning requires that students move toward conceptual understanding and independent transfer/application of key knowledge and skills. Effective classrooms are collaborative partnerships and true communities of learning. ASOT is based on 10 Key Instructional Design Questions: • Question 1: What will I do to establish and communicate learning goals, track student progress, and celebrate success? • Question 2: What will I do to help students effectively interact with new knowledge? • Question 3: What will I do to help students practice and deepen their understanding of new knowledge? • Question 4: What will I do to help students generate and test hypotheses about new knowledge? • Question 5: What will I do to engage students? • Question 6: What will I do to establish or maintain classroom rules and procedures? • Question 7: What will I do to recognize and acknowledge adherence and lack of adherence to classroom rules and procedures? • Question 8: What will I do to establish and maintain effective relationships with students? • Question 9: What will I do to communicate high expectations for all students? • Question 10: What will I do to develop effective lessons organized into a cohesive unit? Angela Dawson DIFFERENTIATION PARENT INFORMATION SESSION All parents are invited to attend a Parent Information Session on Differentiation on Tuesday, 10 March in the Staff Room from 9:00-9:45am. Differentiated instruction allows teachers to meet the needs of individual learners, providing all students with the appropriate level of challenge and the appropriate level of support. On Monday 16 February, seven teachers attended the “Play Is The Way” professional learning opportunity, sponsored by the P&C Teacher Scholarship Funding. Ascot State School values the goals set out in the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians (MCEETYA) that all young people in Australia should be supported to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals and active and informed citizens. Play Is The Way® is a practical methodology for teaching social and emotional learning using guided play, classroom activities and an empowering language that actively supports the above MCEETYA goals. Play Is The Way® develops the skills of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and social management. In so doing, it gives primary students and teachers a way to develop, improve and successfully embed the domain of Personal and Social Capability, one of seven General Capabilities described and detailed in the Australian Curriculum. Play Is The Way® is a creative, hands-on, minds-on approach to engage students with learning. It enhances students’ knowledge of and understanding of wellbeing through the above mentioned capabilities. Play Is The Way® will be a wonderful support and addition to Ascot State School’s Pedagogical Framework, Wellbeing Framework, Student Success and Wellbeing Program and the Student Learning Enhancement Framework. The benefit of Play Is The Way for Ascot State School will be its attention to Social and Emotional Learning, better practice and improved classroom environments. 5 Play Is The Way® have a wonderful website that offers professional learning and information for parents and teachers https://www.playistheway.com.au/ . The teachers who attended this professional learning will provide professional development to other teachers in order to implement the activities and the language of Play Is the Way® which is so vital to its success. Warm regards Deanne Clark AUTHOR IN RESIDENCE - CAMERON STELZER This week (23-27 February), we have a special visit from Author and Illustrator Dr Cameron Stelzer. Cameron is visiting Ascot State School to run workshops with our students. Years 4-6 students will be exploring skills to develop exciting and descriptive writing. Cameron will be engaging Years 2-3 students in a writing workshop focussing on idea formation and inspirations for narratives. Prep-Year 1 students will enjoy an interactive Big Screen Book Reading with Cameron. Students and teachers are looking forward to five fantastic days! In conjunction with the Author Visit, families have a special opportunity to purchase signed and personalised copies of Cameron’s books at special prices. Individual items are $15.00 each and there are also exclusive book sets available. Students will receive an order form on the day of the workshops. Forms and payment can be returned to the colourful box in the Library each day during the Author in Residence Week (by Monday 2 March at the latest). P.E. NEWS City District Sport Trials (Students born 2003/ 2004) Process for attending a City District Trial: 1. We will advertise all upcoming trials in the Digest. 2. Students need to register their interest with Mr Harris/Mrs Graham and we will supply students with information about the trial to take home and show parents. (It is not necessary for parents to email). 3. If parents are willing to provide transport and pay the trial fee we will then provide the child with medical and permission forms for the parents to complete. (If there is a lot of interest/talent we will conduct a school trial first to select the number of children we are allowed to send.) 4. There is a section on the permission form where the Principal has to also give permission for the child to attend. You will need to return the forms to Mr Harris/ Mrs Graham or the office so this can be signed off. 6 5. The child then attends the trial – taking their forms and the fee and giving them to the trial convenor. The next trials coming up on the calendar are for netball/rugby league (March 6) and soccer/touch (March 13). Criteria that selectors consider at these trials will include the child’s: • level of skill • game strategy, field position, knowledge of rules • sportsmanship and attitude. Congratulations to Wesley B who has been selected in the City District Basketball team. We wish all the children trialling for hockey and AFL all the best for this Friday. H.P.E Week (Week 6) Next week is H.P.E. Week. We will celebrate this week with the following events: • Years 4-6 Aquathlon lunch time event (3 laps of the oval, run up Massey Street and into pool area, 75 m freestyle – 3 laps – in pool). This is a voluntary participation event with boys competing on Monday March 2 and girls competing on Thursday March 5. • Which class can score the most goals competition? (Year 5 line up area outside sports shed.) Two goals will be set up with different shooting distances marked for different year levels. Each class will record on a chart provided the number of goals their class successfully shot. Sport development sessions – If sport sessions are washed out as they were in Week 4, year levels will do their best to schedule an alternative session. This suite provides students with a subscription to the full versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Ascot State School 2015 has a new team of school leaders who are ably supported by their loving families and wonderful school staff. We are so fortunate to be able to offer these children the opportunity to participate in the leadership program and preparation process. The Year 6 teachers work closely with our students to enable them to shine. This Friday is the Prep “Meet and Greet” lunch at Ruggers, Crosby Road, Albion. This was mainly due to the generous donation of items by members of the greater school community and of course the fantastic class art projects. Raffles We would like to have a similar prize pool to 2013 where we had more than 50 prizes worth more than $10,000. Each person/ organisation is credited (you can be anonymous) with supplying each prize on the website and on the day. The more prizes the better! school's Welcome Group. The Easter Meal Deal will be a Sausage Sizzle with Easter theme for Years 1-6. The Preps will also be participating in the Easter Meal Deal but they will not be having the Sausage Sizzle; they will have a modified Tuckshop menu to choose from with an Easter theme. To run our Easter Meal Deal we are asking for volunteers from the male population of the school so all you Dads and Grandads out there who can spare a few hours from 12.00-1.45pm on 1 April, please let the Tuckshop know by emailing them at Tuckshop@ascotss.eq.edu.au . We will require at least four Dads/Grandads to help out on the day. This is a great way for the Dads to share in there child’s school day and the smile on their faces is something you won’t want to miss.
