Time to ‘Man Up’? - How mirroring the behaviour
of your successful male counterparts can help
you achieve career success
Media and Communications is one of the few sectors which
has been well-represented by women, but data proves that
few occupy the most senior positions. As the token woman
in a number of different companies, Rhonda has learned
to adapt her style to be more accepted as a senior leader.
But how can you take on characteristics of successful male
colleagues to gain a competitive edge? Rhonda will cover
A media career of ultimate success and triumph
The key determinants of success illustrate that a leader
must be resilient, adaptable and well equipped with the
requisite skills for the job. Although these traits and skills are
important, it is also important to have the ability to recognise
and embrace opportunities. Rebekah has embraced career
opportunities, refined her leadership style and developed
her skills which has seen her advance to the top level in her
field. In this session, she will explore her diverse career in
media and communications and reflect on what it takes to be
successful in this environment. Discuss:
• How to acknowledge a positive career opportunity and
initiate growth
• Essential skills that have determined the success of
Rebekah’s career
• Lessons learnt, rewards gained and advice for current and
emerging female leaders in Media and Communications
Building a successful career in Media and Communications
demands that leaders possess a suite of refined, high-level
skills to both thrive in a business capacity and also lead
teams to success. Strategic planning, issues management,
internal communication and stakeholder management
are just a few of the skills essential for leaders to succeed
in this context. In this session, Jane will reflect upon the
attributes that have contributed to her success at CSL

Leading with authenticity and integrity
It is common for women to fall into a trap of leading in a
style that doesn’t suit the individual. Equally unproductive is
the tendency to prescribe to a rigid leadership model that
suggests that you have to lead a certain way. Leading with
integrity, values and individual goals ensures that you can be
authentic to yourself and the organisation that you represent.
It is important for aspiring leaders to understand that we lead
differently. In this session, Tina will explore the importance of
owning your authentic leadership style. Discuss:
• Strategies to understand your values and how to
incorporate them in your leadership
• Building skills to ensure an effective yet authentic leadership

Demonstrating your value within the organisation
- The Importance of credibility, reputation and
managing expectations
As a senior leader it is important to demonstrate your value
and build a reputation for delivering results. This will build
credibility with not only your colleagues and superiors,
but also the teams that you lead. Within Media and
Communications, reputation and credibility are pivotal to
success. This panel will discuss:
• Strategies to maintain a positive value perception and
reputation within your organisation
• Enhancing credibility to drive innovation and overcome
resistance to change
• Examples of negative perceptions and how to overcome
them
Creating the next opportunity
It is more important than ever to strategically
manage the success of your career as the Media
and Communications industry evolves. Seizing
opportunities, overcoming setbacks and dealing
with uncertainty are all par for the course. As a
communications leader in the financial services sector,
Fleur will discuss how “an accidental journalist”
became a Corporate Communications professional
and how she navigated career challenges along the
way. Fleur explores:
• Coping with change and dealing with complexity

NETWORKING RECEPTION
The role of Media and Communications in
affecting social change and influencing public
policy
Media and public affairs teams are often regarded
as a tool or resource for organisational promotion
and reputation management. While this continues
to be an essential role in both public and private
sectors, a further role is developing for media and
public affairs to play a part in a broader advocacy
and social change agenda. Through her work with
some of the nation’s leading Not-for-Profit community
organisations, Nicola Hazell has developed a
strategic approach to the use of media and public
affairs to enhance community awareness, influence
public policy and build support for tackling inequality.
In this session, Nicola will outline and discuss:
• Strategies for media and communications to help drive and support social change
• How this can be applied in the context of public debate about social policy in Australia
• How media and communication professionals can
themselves become advocates within their
organisations

EXPERT COMMENTARY
Maximising efficiency - Making an impact with
limited resources
With a 24 hour news cycle, it is often difficult to
maintain and best utilise resources that are scarce.
Resources such as time, funding and staff, need to be
utilised efficiently in order to maximise potential and
impact of your role as a proficient leader in Media and
Communications. In this session, Olivia will share her
journey as a leader in a dynamic news room, often
having to achieve big things with limited resources.

ABOUT THE EVENT
The Media and Communications sector via journalism, public relations, digital media, advertising and corporate / government communications holds
considerable power and influence in shaping our society, culture, views and decisions. As such, it is imperative that there is diversity at the senior level
of all media and communications organisations and departments to ensure the messages that are communicated are representative and reflective of
our diverse population.
While there has been some improvement in recent times, there is still some way to go before gender diversity is seen across the board in media and
communications due to a diverse array of challenges still existing.
The Women in Media and Communications Leadership Summit 2015 will continue its tradition of tackling the unique challenges that women
in media and communications face and provide proven and practical strategies to overcome them for enhanced career and leadership success.
Inspirational women from a variety of Media and Communications organisations and sectors will share their stories and provide critical advice for
current and emerging female leaders for increased professional proficiency and potential.
