F INDIA: FOR THE HIJRA O HOME... HOPE, HEALING, WHAT YOU CAN DO Oasis International is supported through the goodwill of people just like you. If you feel a burden to help, please contact us. There is much work to be done, but HIJRA Hijra, literally translating into eunuch, are more commonly known in the Western world as transgender. In India alone, they number 4-6 million. we believe that together we can positively affect the lives of millions. Denied basic rights and shunned by society, many hijra resort to begging and prostitution just to survive. At Oasis International, we believe that the hijra of India deserve a better life. With your support, we can help this marginalized community reclaim their dignity and demand respect. EDUCATION & EMPOWERMENT The road to equality begins with education. A formal education will give hijra the practical tools to earn an honest living with dignity and respect. Oasis endeavors to provide this education, free of cost, in a safe and supportive environment. Our dualpurpose educational/residential complex will serve as the base of all Oasis operations, including job training and basic education from primary to high school. Classes will be taught by volunteers and former graduates of the program and all students will be placed in professional apprenticeships. OUR GOALS FOR INDIA’S HIJRA COMMUNITY • Career counseling • Education and vocational training • Employment and self-reliance • HIV/AIDS awareness and education Reversing a long history of institutionalized discrimination is a long and arduous process, but Oasis firmly believes in the transformative power of education and opportunity.
