And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of
Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
-John 3:14-15, NRSV
Dear Friends,
As I write this, we are beginning the season of Lent. Lent is the period of time
leading up to Easter. It is made of forty days (not counting Sundays) reminiscent
of the forty days and nights of rain while Noah was in the ark, the forty years the
Israelites spent in the wilderness, and especially the forty days Jesus spent in the
wilderness being tempted by Satan.
Lent is a time that believers have traditionally focused on self-examination and
recommitment to seeking God in anticipation of the celebration of Easter. It is a
time when Christians voluntarily assess the good and bad in our lives. We do this
not to dwell on the past, but so that, just as the Israelites looked at the bronze serpent in the wilderness and lived (Numbers 21:5-9), we might turn to Jesus and
know that we will live.
Then, having taken an honest look at our lives, we seek to grow deeper in faith.
With our fellow believers we come to church, look for opportunities for service,
and practice generosity in an effort to more deeply establish a positive, lifechanging connection with Jesus Christ.
This Lenten journey helps prepare us to celebrate Easter with heartfelt joy. After
the self-examination and self-discipline of Lent we are able to more fully appreciate the wonderful gift that God has given to us in Jesus’ glorious triumph over the
grave.
So, this Lent, consider taking time to examine your life in the light of God’s love.
Do not try to rationalize your actions or explain them away. Simply inventory the
contents of your life, good or bad. Then take what steps you can to bring your behaviors and actions more fully into harmony with God and creation and to connect with God more closely. And finally, rest secure, knowing that God loves you
so much that God sent Jesus to bring you through the trials of this wilderness and
into the promised land.
May God bless and strengthen you in this season of Lent.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Mark

themselves. So, take a breather and join the monthly book club called Wine, Women &
Word. This ladies night out will include wine (soda, coffee, etc.), dessert, discussion,
laughter and prayer. Leah Fritsche, director of the Deerfield Public Library, will lead
the book discussions. She has enjoyed leading book clubs in the past and has a multitude of resources and many insights to bring to the group.
The next meeting is March 12th from 7:00-9:00 pm, at Trinity. The book is Over
Salad & Hot Bread by Mary Jensen. If you have questions, please contact Kris Guckenberger at guck@frontier.com
