ELCOME to this Cathedral Church today: to all who represent this nation and the
international community, to representatives of the Church and other faith communities, to
those who have served and suffered, and to those who have lost the ones they love; as we come
to remember before God those men and women who have served in Afghanistan in the cause of
peace and security, and to reflect upon our common humanity and the need for unity.
We give thanks for the commitment of our service personnel, aid agencies and support
organisations to friend and to stranger, and for the skill and expertise with which they have striven
for peace and the common good.
We commemorate with sorrow and regret those who have died in these operations, and pray for
their families and friends and for all who mourn their loss. May they rest in peace and rise in
glory.
We remember those who have been injured in body, mind or spirit and we pray for their continued
well-being and for those who especially support them.
And we pray for the nation of Afghanistan, for its people and its leaders, remembering the fear
and death and loss that they too have known, and the danger which people in that great country
continue to face today. May they share in the many riches which earth affords and contribute
actively to the good of the international community.
We also pray for ourselves and for men and women of peace throughout the world: that in political
and religious life, in education and the arts, in sport and in charitable concerns, and in our
relationships with others, we may campaign for peace and goodwill, that hearts and minds may
be turned away from hatred towards the vision of a world where barriers are broken down and love
is all in all.
So we come from many places, from different traditions of faith, to unite in thanksgiving, in
remembrance, and in prayer before God; as we pray together:
O
UR Father, who art in heaven; hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be
done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our
trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.
