The concluding part of the Preface is called the Sanctus (meaning
“Holy”) because of the triple “holy” that begins the acclamation in which our
earthly liturgy is joined with the heavenly liturgy. Father Joseph Jungmann, a
Jesuit liturgical historian, says that the Sanctus “fits best of all in the structure of
the Eucharistic Prayer” (Jungmann, The Mass of the Roman Rite: Its Origins and
Development, 1986, II:133). He explains: “All of God’s benefits and the manifestations of
His favor, for which we must give thanks, are after all only revelations of His inmost being,
which is all light and brilliance, inviolable and without stain, before which creation can only
bow in deepest reverence – his holiness” (Ibid.).
Medieval commentators of the Sanctus give a Trinitarian meaning to the triple “holy”
adding that the unity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is indicated in the Dominus
Deus (Lord God). Thus, we acclaim: “Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts…”
In 2013, Pope Francis declared that a Year of Consecrated Life (YCL) be celebrated
throughout the world. YCL will begin on the First Sunday of Advent, November 30, 2014. It
will close on the World Day of Consecrated Life, February 2, 2016- Please keep those
who have dedicated their lives to Christ in your prayers

Consecrated Life
O God, throughout the ages you have called
women and men to pursue lives of perfect
charity through the evangelical counsels of
poverty, chastity, and obedience. During this
Year of Consecrated Life, we give you
thanks for these courageous witnesses of
Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit
of holy lives teaches us to make a more perfect offering of ourselves to you. Continue to
enrich your Church by calling forth sons and
daughters who, having found the pearl of
great price, treasure the Kingdom of Heaven
above all things. Through our Lord Jesus
Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with
you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,
for ever and ever. Amen.
Parishioners are invited to contribute money to help purchase items to decorate the Church for
the Easter season. Donations may be made in memory of a deceased person, or in honor of
someone living. The names of all memorials will be put in the Church bulletin.

There was this story of a man named Trapper John. He lived in a remote forest at the northern edge
of Canada. He made his closest friendship with his faithful German shepherd, Duke. Every few days he and
Duke would take the overnight trek to check the traps. Selling animal pelts at the trading post in the distant
town sustained their simple life.
Trapper John and Duke had shared each other’s company for over 10 years, since he had traded a
couple of fur for the puppy. The dog loved the man, often protecting him from wild animals when they were
out on their all-night treks to check the traps. Duke even seemed to listen attentively to Trapper John share
his feelings as he sat by the campfire. Although it was a lonely experience, Trapper John had chosen it.
On one trip into town to sell his furs and purchase more goods, he met her. New in town, this young
woman immediately caught his attention. She worked at the trading post and seemed anxious to engage him
in conversation. They enjoyed dinner together, and after that John started making more frequent trips into
town. That spring they married, and she moved her things out to the trapper’s cabin in the woods.
Their first child was born the following winter - but tragedy accompanied the birth of their beautiful
daughter, for Trapper John’s wife died in childbirth. Broken-hearted, he had no choice but to take his baby
girl into town to live with a kind family willing to take care of her until she was old enough to return to the
cabin.
She was almost a year old when Trapper John brought her back to his cabin in the woods. Now he
was faced with the challenge of raising a child while sustaining their existence with trapping. During his
overnight trips, he would leave Duke with the sleeping baby, knowing that he would protect her if she was in
any danger. On one such trip tragedy once again visited this small family.
Returning home early in the morning after checking his traps, John came to the top of the hill overlooking his cabin. His heart pounded wildly when he noticed the front door of the cabin pushed open.
Throwing down his pelts, he raced to the open door to check on his daughter.
As he entered the cabin, his worst fears were realized. The baby’s little bed was covered with blood.
In that moment he caught sight of Duke trembling in the corner, covered with blood. Enraged, the man
inclined his rifle and pointed it directly to Duke.
“You killed my baby! You killed my baby!” John’s anguished roar awoke the baby, who started out of
sleep with a little cry from underneath the bloodied blanket. John, his finger on the trigger and his dog in the
gunsight, turned his head toward that cry - and with a sweep of his hand, uncovered his unharmed baby. It
was only then that he saw the dead bobcat behind his daughter’s bed. In a heartbreaking moment of understanding, he realized that he had almost killed the one who had saved his baby’s life.
If Trapper John had taken time to get all the facts, he could have avoided this nearly tragedy. How
many times are we guilty of the same thing? We jump to conclusions about other people and judge them
before we know the whole story. We sometimes hurt each other because we haven’t taken time to get all the
facts. In most cases, our understanding of another person’s situation is only fragmentary. We need to stop,
look, listen and think before we act.
When Jesus died on the cross, he prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are
doing” (Luke 23:34). It was ignorance that nailed Jesus to the cross. Let us not make the same mistake
again. Don’t crucify Jesus all over again by turning your back on him.

PALM SUNDAY - MARCH 28/29
As is tradition here at Holy Family, we will have the
dramatic reading of the Passion at all the weekend
Masses, Palm Saturday and Sunday, March 28/29.
We invite adults and children ages 10 and older to
participate as a Palm Bearer. There will be a
mandatory practice. Please be sure to let the Mass
coordinator know if you are interested, and he/she
will give you more details; or call the Liturgy Office,

human race Jesus Christ our Savior as a model of
humility. He fulfilled Your Will by becoming Man and
giving His life on the Cross. Help us to bear witness to
You By following His example of suffering and make us
worthy to share in His Resurrection. We ask this
through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son. Amen
FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
FASTING & ABSTINENCE
We are people saved from eternal death and brought
to new life by Jesus. God has great mercy and deep
love for us. Out of this love, God sent His son, Jesus,
to redeem us by His blood, offering us the hope of
eternal life. Our rescue from sin and death is sheer
grace. This great gift from God merits a response of
gratitude and a life of faith and good works.
Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday,
Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics
14 years and older. Fasting is observed on Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18
years of age but not yet 59.

WILL YOU ALLOW ANOTHER ROE V WADE?
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We are faced with another issue, a decision that will again affect our culture and moral values. The value of human life has
slowly eroded. It has sacrificed a million at the beginning of life and now threatens to do the same at the end of life. The right-to-life
rhetoric has progressed from a “personal choice” to “social good”.
Advocates for physician assisted suicide (PAS) now speak in terms of “dignity’, “choice”, “rights” and “quality of life”. A
nationwide organization that is the leader in promoting PAS has changed its name for Hemlock Society (note that Hemlock is a plant
toxin) to Compassion & Choices to take advantage of the growing approval rate, ranging from 36 to 75% since 1947, of allowing
doctors to end a patient’s life when his/her disease cannot be cured and the emergence of the present selfish and narcissistic Me
Generation. This emerging generation has placed their convenience, choice, and right to their body on top of responsibility and have
chosen to solve the problems associated with rearing a child and taking care of the elderly who had cared for them during their formative years with unconditional love, by killing these individuals or allowing them to prematurely terminate their lives. The elderlies
who need care, because of their continual love for their children, have ironically convinced themselves to go along with their childrens’ decision that dying is the best way to go so that their children will not be burdened.
Here are some of the present facts about PAS:
1. Four states in the US and one county has legalized PAS. CA State Senators Bill Monning and Lois Wolk, both Democrats, introduced Senate Bill 128, End Of Life Option Act last January 2015. It is modeled after the Oregon “Death With Dignity Act”.
2. PAS advocates have failed six times in the past to pass a PAS legislation that will transform the crime of assisted suicide into a
medical problem. However, because of term limits, present legislators have not heard the compelling reasons on why PAS should
not be legalized.
3. The chances of passing the PAS law is stronger now because the generation that cared for their elderly is diminishing in numbers
plus the need to have two salaries in the household leaving no one at home during the day to care for the elderly is a present reality.
4. It defies protecting human life which is the foundation of our nation and a disobedience of God’s 5th commandment - Thou shall
not kill. With PAS, death can be used as a treatment even for depression and for cost control.
5. It transforms doctors from healers to killers, destroying the medical ethic of “Do no harm”.
6. It has no real safeguard against abuse (e.g. once legal, suicide could be encouraged to preserve an inheritance, avoid caring for
the parents, hide medical malpractice, and increase HMO profit because it is less costly to give a lethal injection than to provide cancer treatment).
7. Like Roe v Wade, once it has been implemented, it will be hard to take back even if obvious harm is proven in the future.
8. On states and countries that allow PAS, some elderly and vulnerable now forego needed hospitalization out of fear of being killed
by the doctor.
9. It will surely play a major role in the decision making of the panel in Obamacare on whether treatment will be authorized for the
patient.
10. PAS in some countries have moved from being voluntary to involuntary with select patients being given lethal doses of drugs
without consent.
If you disapprove PAS (physician-assisted suicide), we ask you to TAKE ACTION. Inform legislators of constituent opposition to PAS. Please sign the accompanying Petition To Oppose Physician Assisted Suicide. Since this present Petition is not to
qualify an initiative, anyone able to understand the issue, including minors, may sign. You need not be a registered voter but preferably, a California resident.
Please mail your completed Petition to Scholl Institute at the address provided or submit it to the rectory, c/o Pro-life, before
the end of March 2015. Thank you for your action, time and support.
