developing cartoon characters and creating a
storyboard with these characters, this is the
beginning of a cartoon. They will create an animatic
(filmed) storyboard, which is the first step in the
process of any major animated film. The class
introduces the participants to basic digital cartooning
software, basic animatic techniques in filmmaking,
character design and some of the fundamentals of
comic storytelling. All work is original to the
participants and the copyrights belong to the
creators. The final cartoons are posted on the Freshi

Filmmaking from Script
to Premiere (Ages 8-12)
This camp begins with a completed script. The
participants form small production groups of 6 to 8
filmmakers. From a book of scripts, the group decides
on the genre of film they want to produce: comedy,
drama, sci-fi, action adventure or horror. The group
begins with creating the storyboards for their film.
Using basic video cameras and editing software, they
produce the film, integrating simple special effects,
sound effects and a score. They will learn camera
angles, film etiquette and vocabulary and digital film
tools. The skills they learn should be able to translate
outside of the class to their home video camera and
computer so they can continue with their digital
storytelling after the class is over. Depending on the
group, they may bring costumes and props from
home but this is not required. The final class will be a
premiere of their movie for the benefit of family and
friends. The final film is posted on the Freshi website
at www.freshiacademy.com or can be downloaded
on a personal thumb drive by the participants.

Beginning Game Design
(Ages 8-12)
Beginning Game Developers work in pairs of two per
computer to learn the basics of computer
programming for games. Unlike other Game-learning
experiences, this program starts with a blank screen.
The programming is logic-based and does not require
previous experience with computer programming or
computer programming languages. Everything
created for the game is original to the team. In this
program, they will learn the fundamental elements
of a game and build a single platform game. On the
last day of the class they can download their game to
a personal thumb drive so that they can play the
game at home or with friends. The games are totally
original to the creative pairs and the copyrights are

Introduction to
Game Design:
Paper Games (Ages 5-7)
This is the program that introduces the beginning of
the Game Design process. Working independently or
as a small group, the participants learn to create the
concept for a game, design the characters, design the
backgrounds and articulate the flow of the game
including how points are scored, what challenges
have to be overcome, what is won at each level and
how many advancing levels move the action of the
game forward. All work is original to the young Game
Designers and the copyrights are owned by the
creators. Finally, the participants begin to storyboard
the action of the game and prepare for beginning the

Youth Sports and Pre-School
Sports Activities Policy
Waitlists may be established once an activity has reached maximum
capacity or the registration period has closed. Waitlists will only be taken
up to five (5) business days after registration has ended. If a space opens,
you will be notified. Being placed on a waitlist does not guarantee
placement in an activity. If placed, an additional service charge of $23.20
will be added to the cost of the program. Once an activity has started,
waitlists will be discarded and waitlisted individuals will be notified that
they are no longer on the waitlist.
Youth Activity Scholarship Assistance Program
Would you like to register your child for an activity but can’t because
of a limited family budget? Partial financial assistance may be
available through our Youth Activity Scholarship Program. To be
eligible, you must meet the following requirements: Brentwood
resident (no other areas will be considered); under 18 years of age;
meet the income eligibility chart listed in the application; applicant
must fill out the application and provide some form of verification of
their yearly family income. These scholarships are funded through
community donations and can vary from year-to-year. A limit of $125
in scholarships per eligible family is available each fiscal year, as long
as funds are available. Scholarships subsidize 50% of the
class/sport/activity fee. Certain classes can not be repeated. For more
information call (925) 516-5444.
Early Bird Doesn’t
Always Get the Worm
In an effort to maintain fairness and uphold City policy, the
Parks and Recreation Department will hold all registrations
received prior to May 10 for residents and May 17 for nonresidents, and will not process them until 24 hours after the
official registration opens. If at that time the activity is full, the
Refund Policy will be followed. PLEASE NOTE: All payments
must be deposited on the date they are received.

Play Connects Us to Others
haring joy, laughter, and fun with others promotes bonding and strengthens a
sense of community. We develop empathy, compassion, trust, and the capacity
for intimacy through regular play.
S
A great way to incorporate regular play is through Playport
to Fun!
Experience “play” in one of the many beautiful parks Brentwood has to offer. Visit our website at
www.brentwoodca.gov ; choose Parks and Recreation Department, Playport to Fun! to download free information, activities and picnic
recipes featuring Black Gold, City Park, Creekside, Garin, Mallard, Oak Meadow and
Rainbows End Parks and the trail system that specifically ends at
King Park. This year we are also featuring “Play Skills” pages that
teach good old fashioned playground games such as jacks,
hopscotch, jump rope, and four-square.
Mark your calendar for Brentwood’s
Annual Play Day event
on Friday, August 17 at the newly
refurbished City Park. Please watch for
additional Play Day information.
Play Teaches Us
Perseverance
The
rewards of
learning or
mastering a
new game
teach us that
perseverance is
worthwhile.
Perseverance is a trait
necessary to healthy
adulthood, and it is learned largely
through play. Perseverance and violence
are rarely found together.
City of Brentwood Youth Commission
