Hornsby Heights Rural
Fire Brigade The Gorge
celebrates its 50th
Anniversary!
Story by Malcolm Bruce
Some History
Hornsby Heights Rural Fire Brigade was formed on the 1st March
1965 as a result of public submissions to Hornsby Shire Council and was
originally known as 7KH*RUJH%XVK¿UH%ULJDGH.
The formation of the Brigade was result of the hard work by one of
the original members, Kevin Williams, who conducted a door-knock
campaign in Hornsby Heights, to see if there was interest in forming a
local brigade.
So, on the 1st March 1965 at the public school in Somerville Road,
+RUQVE\+HLJKWV7KH*RUJH%XVK¿UH%ULJDGHZDVIRUPHG
There was a dearth of equipment and the Brigade was in desperate need

Instead of a new tanker, in 1966 the Brigade was presented with Arcadia

sitting in the open for several years and had a small tree growing in the
cabin. The Brigade spent many hours to bring the 1942 Chevrolet Blitz

This 1942 Blitz became known as Puff the Tragic Waggon.
Over the years the Brigade and original Puff became separated and

state on a farm in Mudgee in 2000. After many years of hard work
the veteran members of the Brigade restored Puff the Tragic Waggon to
a better than new condition and Puff can now be seen, representing the
Rural Fire Service, across Sydney (see front cover photo).

The Brigade has become famous for its Christmas Eve Santa

has its original tanker the famous Puff as well as the newer tanker, Puff 4.
The Brigade is now equipped with a state of the art tanker and equipment
that is regularly inspected and maintained to rigorous Service standards by
the professional mechanical staff at Hornsby Council. The importance of

Berowra’s Wall of Remembrance
A new memorial wall was unveiled on Friday 13 March 2015
at Berowra RSL Cenotaph by Berowra Federal MP Philip
Ruddock and Hornsby State MP Matt Kean.
Mr Ruddock and Mr Kean joined members of the Berowra RSL Sub
Branch to inspect the new sandstone wall which was constructed as part
of the Federal government’s Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program.
The new $17,000 memorial wall will feature a bronze plaque and has been
inscribed with phrase:

year’s historic 100th Anzac Day anniversary, Saturday 25th
April 2015.
Additional state funding of $4000 was also allocated to the existing
Cenotaph to install electrical wiring for lights at the site.
Berowra RSL Sub Branch President Bob Dobson said he was very
appreciative of the support from both the Federal and State governments.
“The community of Berowra has a long and proud history of service within
Australia’s Defence Forces,” Mr Dobson said.
“This memorial is the Sub Branch’s contribution to remembering all those
who have served. Particularly in this year of 2015 we remember those who

the changes resulting from new
laws regarding the home building
industry, or building or renovating
your home.
Most changes commenced on
15 January 2015 including
licensing, owner-builders, home
building compensation fund and
disputes, defects and statutory
warranties. Further amendments
concerning contract requirements
will commence on 1 March 2015.
The changes to ownerbuilders are as follows:
owner-builders are required to
name all other owners of the land
on an application for an ownerbuilder permit. This is recorded on
the permit to prevent people using
this system to carry out commercial
unlicensed building work.
Any owners named cannot apply
for another owner-builder permit
for a different property for 5 years;
owner-builders are prohibited
from getting a permit for a dual
occupancy except in special
circumstances;
owner-builders are not able to
get statutory insurance although
contractors working for the
owner-builder still need to provide

sale must clearly state that there

at ratepayers’ expense, we were

We are also told to believe it is

If this is good news, it is hard to
imagine bad news.
Perhaps it is also good news that
we are spared access to read the
history of life in this Shire since the
demise of the quarry.
Before Hornsby Council became the
unlicensed owner of the quarry, the

to recognise its end, and made a

NSW ELECTION: SATURDAY 28 MARCH 2015 Candidates
Dr John STOREY

Matt KEAN
Liberal
Steve ACKERMAN
Labor
Dr John Storey is
an internationally
renowned Antarctic
physicist.
An emeritus
professor at UNSW,
he has a career in research,
teaching and management
spanning over 30 years. John cofounded Solar Mobility Pty Ltd., a
Thornleigh-based manufacturer of
electric mobility scooters for people
with disabilities. He has lived with
his wife in Hornsby since 1998.
They have two daughters, now
grown up.
For recreation, John sails on the
Hawkesbury River and Broken Bay.
He is a keen native gardener with a
love of music.
John is passionate about minimising
harmful climate change. This
means weaning Australia off fossil
fuels, and promoting a thriving,
sustainable economy based on
renewable energy.
He wants to reduce social inequity
in all its forms, by properly funding
public education, public health,
public transport and public housing.
And, as a scientist, he is keen to
bring reasoned, thoughtful debate
back into Australian politics.
NSW has come a
long way since the
Coalition entered
Government in
2011. Prior to 2011,
we had the highest
rate of unemployment, we had the
slowest rate economic growth, and
we had a $30 billion infrastructure
backlog.
Locally things were not as they
should be either. We remember
the horror stories about Hornsby
Hospital, while important issues
such Pennant Hills Road and
Hornsby Quarry were ignored.
The Coalition has commenced
work on the North West Rail Link,
connecting Galston and Cowan
to the Sewerage System and
Rebuilding our Hospital.
But there is still far more to do.
I am asking for you to support our
positive plan for NSW and for Hornsby.
If a Baird Liberal Government is
re-elected we will: complete the
rebuild of Hornsby hospital with
an additional $200 million; we
will build 270 additional commuter
car parking spaces at Hornsby
DQG$VTXLWK6WDWLRQVZHZLOO¿[
Pennant Hills Road by building
1RUWK&RQQH[DQGZHZLOO¿QDOO\¿[
the Hornsby Quarry turning it into
the Centennial park of our district.
Like so many of
you, I have spent
25 wonderful years
living and raising a
family in Hornsby.
I love this area: it is
unique and special.
For too long Hornsby has been
treated like an afterthought. We
deserve the best roads, schools,
hospital and train stations, just like
the rest of Sydney.
Hornsby is changing rapidly and
we must have the infrastructure in
place to cope with this. Whether
we are talking about privatizing our
electricity network or selling off child

COUNCIL SURVEY:
Here’s What Brooklyn had to Say ...
Landowners of Brooklyn and
surrounding areas have had a
say on their future, taking part in a

values and vision for the area.
Issues that were rated as most
important by survey respondents

and environmental health.
When asked what they valued most
about Brooklyn, the majority of
respondents nominated the village

environment.
“I would like to thank the 257 people
ZKRWRRNWKHWLPHWR¿OOLQWKH
survey, giving us a strong sense of
the community’s feelings,” Hornsby
Shire Mayor Steve Russell said.
Many respondents agreed that
revitalisation of the town centre and
public assets is needed, though it
was made clear that this should not
come at the expense of the village’s
heritage values.
The survey results will contribute

strategy for Brooklyn that will outline
work that needs to be done to meet
community expectations.
Survey Snapshot
More than 80 percent of
respondents agreed or strongly
agreed with the following
statements:
The public domain like
parks and roads are a key part of
Brooklyn’s amenity;
Brooklyn’s heritage character
needs to be protected;
Waterway health and
environmental issues are priorities;
Hornsby and Gosford councils
and the State Government should
jointly address commuter berthing
and waterfront access;
The State Government should
fund local infrastructure because it’s
also used by people from outside
Hornsby Shire;
Developers should contribute
towards or provide new and
improved local infrastructure.

QUARRY PARK QUANDARY
Labor candidate for Hornsby, Steve Ackerman has raised serious
concerns about a proposed $22 million park project in Hornsby.
The State Liberal member for Hornsby, Matt Kean, claims a deal has already
been struck to develop the Quarry area using excavated waste from the
NorthConnex tunnel project.
“Mr Kean claims to have negotiated the funding, although his pronouncement
hasn’t been accompanied by the customary Ministerial endorsement that should
accompany such a deal,” said Mr Ackerman.
Labor candidate for Hornsby, Steve Ackerman called for an open and
transparent disclosure of plans and funding details for the proposal.
“Mr Kean proposes spending $22 million of public money to create one of the
most expensive parks in Sydney,” Mr Ackerman said.
“Hornsby residents are asking for an Environmental Impact Assessment to be
carried out following advice that Hornsby will have to cope with an estimated
60 truck and trailer movements per day, eight hours a day for up to two years,”
said Mr Ackerman.
Hornsby council has claimed that to stabilize the Quarry walls could cost up to
$100 Million dollars, however, Mr Kean’s proposal makes no mention of this
cost.
An earlier option to create a recreational lake at the Quarry site has been put
forward by Dr Charles Gerrard, a former Professor of Mining Engineering.
“Dr Gerrard’s plan was to stabilize the site using material in the quarry walls.
This would mean not a single noisy haul truck would have to pass over Hornsby
roads,” said Mr Ackerman.
“It isn’t the local member’s job to solve Hornsby Council’s quarry conundrum,”
Mr Ackerman said.

A small business owner in Hornsby increased his sales to
website visitors by over 70% by putting a professionallymade video on his website.
Being on the internet was once optional for small business owners, but is now
essential. In much the same way having a professionally made video on a
business website is fast become the norm. Search engines like Google love
video and rank websites higher if they have video. And customers are 80% more
likely to transact with a business that has a well-made video.
“Video, done properly, increases search engine rankings and conversion rates.
It also enhances the image of the business and helps build trust with customers,”
said Tony from Web Video Central.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY
PRICELESS
PEARLS
Do you work in a job
where you regularly meet new
people and need to be introduced
or do you work with people who
know you well and who are familiar
with your special little quirks?
For the most part, I work with a large
group of people I know fairly well,
the rest of the time I walk around
with a nametag on my uniform so
introductions are unnecessary. But every
now and then I get formally introduced
to a new group of people (usually when
I am making a presentation or teaching
a class).
I find these introductions interesting
– they usually start with your name
and then list your qualifications or
the experience that is relevant to the
situation you are in. They list your
achievements and they may bring up
something interesting regarding your
personal life or even try to mine a gem
from the past that makes for interesting
discussion. This is all for a good reason
– they want the audience to understand
who you are and the reason you have
a right to be standing in front of them
today – it is to build credibility and to
hopefully open a doorway to those you
are trying to communicate with.
If I asked you to write a short Bio,
summing up yourself in a few
sentences, what would you write?
Would you list the roles you play –
father, mother, coach, friend – would
you list your skills and qualifications –
MBA, PHD, WDW (washes dishes well)
– would you list hobbies, interests or
just something quirky?
How you see yourself is often very
different to how others perceive you:
You may think that you are nice and
friendly but the people you deal with
may have an opposing opinion; you
may think that you are the life of the
party, you are fun to be around and
everyone is pleased to see you – but is
that what others see?
Whilst we should always be comfortable
in our own skin, it is important to
understand what others see in us.
Jesus asked this question: “Who do
men say that I am?” His disciples
answered “Some say you are one
of the prophets, John the Baptist or
Jeremiah…” Jesus obviously displayed
attributes of all of them but He pressed
the question further “Who do you say
that I am?”
As we approach Easter just a week
away I would encourage you to ask
yourself two questions – “Who am I
really?” and …“Who is He?”
DO YOU HAVE A COMMENT
OR A QUESTION?

CONNECTED
The Cyber Bullying Musical
by Craig Christie
Set to tour NSW schools throughout 2015 …
Snapchat – Facebook. Twitter. Instagram. WhatsApp. Messenger.
YouTube.
… Students are always CONNECTED
CONNECTED is a new Australian musical by Craig Christie written
specifically for today’s students as a way of highlighting the issues and
effects surrounding cyber bullying. It is intended to stimulate discussion
and showcase the sometimes unintended consequences of cyber activities.
CONNECTED premiered at the 2014 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and this all
new Australian production was launched in Sydney on 24th November, 2014
at a special cyber safety event for teachers, students, parents and industry.
CONNECTED is an exciting and engaging theatrical production that uses an
energetic, fast paced narrative and an edgy original contemporary musical
soundtrack to demonstrate in live action what the consequences of cyber
bullying can be, rather than just being an instructive program. Often kids
think they are just being funny, not realising the unintended consequences.
Peer pressure usually plays a huge role as well. All these themes are covered
in the show.
Creator and former teacher Craig Christie wrote CONNECTED after the
daughter of a friend was involved in a cyber-bullying incident.
We know that at least 1 in 5 children are or have been the target of a
cyberbully and it is estimated that some 463,000 young Australians were
targeted by cyberbullies in 2013[1]. Students who are bullied suffer from
higher rates of depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, reduced concentration
and helplessness. It is also a contributory factor in youth suicide. Studies
commissioned by the Australian Federal Government acknowledge that the
best form of addressing the issues surrounding cyberbullying amongst youth
is via the school environment. Connected is a memorable and powerful
method to achieve this awareness in the school environment and educate
Australia’s youth about being cyber smart and staying safe online.
CONNECTED from Origin On Stage in association with Theatre One
Productions is now open for bookings for in-school performances and
special student/parent performances.
Schools can book their preferred dates by downloading the booking

Angelique
& Bert
Angelique, a six year old Chihuahua cross, came from the pound with her mate 10
year old Bert, a Mini Foxy cross Chihuahua. Founder of Doggie Rescue, Monika
Biernacki said, “They are very bonded, sleep in the same bed and Bert really looks
after his little mate. These dogs are very quiet and each has a gentle nature.”
Angelique is an inquisitive girl who weighs only 3.2kg. Bert is a touch heavier at 7.5kg.
They are both short haired and would suit a family working longer hours or apartmentstyle living. They come desexed, C5 vaccinated, heartworm free and microchipped.
Their adoption cost is $750. For further details call DoggieRescue on 9486 3133 or
