Royal Holloway launches
unique Magna Carta App
Royal Holloway, University of London,
is this month launching a new app,
Runnymede Explored, which visitors can
download and use to explore the meadow
where Magna Carta was sealed 800 years
ago and learn about the charter’s history.
The app, designed by 19 students from
across academic departments, gives
visitors the option of seven trails to follow
in Runnymede Meadow, along with a
field guide to over 100 species which
make Runnymede their home.
Geography student Anna Hamilton,
Runnymede Explored App Editor and
Trail Writer, said: “The app is designed
so that there are many different themed

trails to suit different interests. Visitors
can choose from trails such as the history,
geography, arts, politics, nature, walking
guide and children’s trail, and can also
learn about wildlife in more detail in the
ecology trail.”

Students at The Marist School in
Sunninghill welcomed award winning
science pyro-technician Matthew Tosh
as part of their programme of events
to celebrate British Science Week with
school based STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering & Maths) activities.
Matthew whose career spans teaching,
pyrotechnics, and broadcasting put on an
original, creative and visual demonstration
wowing the students with several show
stopping explosions and giving a highly
inspirational presentation on the science
behind fireworks.
Shrieking with delight, children from
Upton House School, Windsor were
among those to attend the event.
Girls at The Marist buck the national
trend of stereotypical expectations
and presumptions rooted in gender by
achieving a disproportionally large share
of the top grades in Science and Maths.
Consistently, in recent years many Marist
girls have gone on to read Medicine,
Engineering, Dentistry and Veterinary
Science at degree level to name but a few.
Headteacher, Karl McCloskey said: “We
are delighted to support British Science
Week and welcome Matthew to our school.
His passion for science and the performing
arts matches his dedicated approach and
attention to his live production. Equally,
his capacity to communicate the scientific
concepts which underpin the range of
visual, aural and olfactory effects kept the
students transfixed throughout.”
Bandstand to be created for
Queen and community
A Royal Borough project which aims
to celebrate Windsor’s unique link to
the armed forces has been given a cash
boost.
The For Queen and Community
project, which will celebrate Her
Majesty the Queen becoming the
longest reigning British monarch and
Windsor’s link to the armed forces, has
been awarded £161,600 through the
Armed Forces Community Covenant.
The remainder of the £254,600 cost
of the project will be provided by the
Royal Borough in part through receipts
of developer contributions for heritage
and arts projects.
The For Queen and Community
project will see a range of events
take place in Windsor including:
• design and installation of replica of
the Edwardian bandstand that used
to be in Alexandra Gardens
• renewal of some of Alexandra
Gardens planting around the feature
• improvements to lighting in the
gardens
• an artist led activity helping local
young people to design six panels
around the bandstand to record a
notable military event from each of
the last six decades
• community music & performance
workshops to create an event to mark
Her Majesty the Queen becoming
longest reigning monarch in
September 2015
The project aims to bring together
communities across the borough,
including serving soldiers, service
families and the general community
who will work on the project and event.
It will also create a focal point for
future events in Alexandra Gardens
with the bandstand equipped to
modern standards but in keeping with
the Edwardian original.
Mark Taylor, the Royal Borough’s
head of libraries, said: “We are looking
forward to being able to implement
this project and helping our residents,
whether serving soldiers, service
families or the general population
celebrate and commemorate Her
Majesty the Queen becoming the
longest reigning monarch later
this year, while forging friendships
and understanding between the
communities in the borough.”
The Community Covenant is a
statement
promising
cohesion
between armed forces communities
and the communities in the area in
which they live. Funding is available
from the Ministry of Defence for
projects which aim to improve links
between the Armed Forces and the
wider community.
The Royal Borough has a large forces
population, with Windsor being the
home of the Coldstream Guards and
Household Cavalry.

Day at the races for Prince Charles
International child abduction
Few family separation issues create greater stress than
disagreements between parents about the country in which
their children should be brought up.
The more Surrey
becomes a location of choice for international families, the
more we come across this problem. The Law Commission has

a court order but to retain that child contrary to what was agreed, an action
which is not currently an offence.
Reunite - The leading UK charity supporting parents caught up in international
child abduction by a former partner, said about 40% of all its cases were actually
wrongful retentions. As Reunite commented in their recent press release:
‘Parental child abduction, whether by removal or retention, is recognised as a form of
child abuse and causes real harm to children who potentially suffer great emotional
trauma by suddenly being ripped away from all they know and being denied contact
with their left behind parent and extended family. As the law stands at present,
children who are retained outside of the UK are not offered the level of protection
afforded to children in other abusive situations.’

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of
Cornwall attended The Prince's Countryside
Fund Raceday at Ascot at the end of March.
As the final meeting of the 2014/15 Jumps
season at Ascot, the day featured an afternoon
of highly competitive racing alongside a range
of countryside inspired activities.
Proceeds from event will go towards
supporting the fantastic work that The Prince's
Countryside Fund carries out.
The Prince's Countryside Fund, founded by
HRH The Prince of Wales, who has a longheld commitment to supporting Britain's hard
pressed rural areas, was set up by Business in
the Community in July 2010. So far it has given
£5 million in grants distributed to 120 projects
across the country, directly benefitting 100,000
people.
Car takes a tumble
in Ascot High Street
Residents who were out late at night ran to the
rescue of an elderly lady who had crashed her car in
Ascot High Street.
According to reports, the car was lying on its side.
A crowd ran over to prevent the car from rolling over
again, until emergency services arrived.
Police and ambulance services were first on the
scene and then a fire and rescue crew arrived from
Bracknell.
They found the woman trapped by her seatbelt
inside the car. She was eventually rescued without
injuries.
Projects that have been funded include
apprenticeships for budding hill farmers,
training for young people to gain employment
in the rural economy, community transport
schemes in isolated rural areas and projects to
educate school children about where their food
comes from and why the countryside matters.
In addition to its normal application process,
the Fund also operates an emergency fund for
times of need.
All the projects focus on supporting the people
who care for our countryside and make it tick.
Helen Aldis, Manager of The Prince’s
Countryside Fund, said: "It is really important
that we value the countryside and the people
that live and work there. This unique raceday
[provides] the opportunity for families to
find out more about the valuable work of The
Prince’s Countryside Fund, the innovative
projects we are supporting right around the UK
and meet some of the people and businesses we
have helped to date."
Philip Hammond adds his name to
Royal Holloway’s votes campaign
Philip Hammond has pledged support for #votebecause campaign.
Philip Hammond, Secretary of State for
Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and MP
for Runnymede and Weybridge has pledged
his support for Royal Holloway’s #votebecause
campaign to encourage students to use their
right to vote in this year’s general election.
Students, staff and alumni have been
photographing themselves holding up a handwritten placard about either why they will be voting
in May’s general election or why people should
vote, which are then tweeted using the hashtag
#votebecause.
The current focus of the campaign has been to
encourage students to register to vote before the
cut-off date of 20 April to ensure they qualify for
May’s elections. A presentation, including photos
from the votebecause campaign has been projected
on a large wall in the Windsor Building at Royal
Holloway throughout the week to make sure
students register before next month’s deadline.
Dr Kaat Smets from the Department of Politics
& International Relations at Royal Holloway said:
“It is very simple. If you are not registered, you
cannot vote. Why deny yourself the right to vote in
the general elections and be part of the democratic
process?”
Anyone who still has not registered can do so
here and if you haven’t added your voice to the
#votebecause campaign you can support it by
tweeting your reasons to vote to make sure there is a
great turnout on Thursday 7 May.

Major collection of classic cars
purchased by Ascot car dealer
Gorgeous (and spoken for): Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato
In what is believed to be one of the biggest
private motoring deals in British history, a major
collection of classic cars has been purchased by a
well-known dealer from Ascot.
John Collins, from Ferrari specialist Talacrest,
paid £20 million for 27 cars including an Aston
Martin DB4 Zagato Sanction II. The car had less
than 9,000 miles on the clock and is believed to be
one of only four made.
Other marques in the collection include Ferrari,
Jaguar, Lamborghini, Mclaren, Mercedes Benz
and Porsche.
The private collection had been hidden away in
storage just outside London.
Mr Collins has already sold a number of the cars
in the collection - including the DB4 Zagato.
Back in November, Mr Collins paid £518,480 at
a DVLA auction for the registration plate "25 O",
which he was reported to have put on a £10 million
Ferrari. The amount Mr Collins paid smashed the
previous DVLA record of £352,411 which was
spent on "1D" in 2009.

Boy who raped 48 year old woman
in Bagshot begins long jail sentence
A 16-year-old boy was sentenced to a total of
15 years after pleading guilty to one charge of
rape, one charge of attempted rape, one charge
of sexual assault by touching and two charges
of assault by penetration when he appeared at
Guildford Crown Court today.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal
reasons, pleaded guilty to all five charges at an
earlier hearing in October 2014, was ordered
to serve six years in prison and nine years
on licence and will also be placed on the Sex
Offender Register.
The victim of the attack, a 48-year-old woman,
was walking along a footpath in the vicinity of
Esher Road and Pennyhill Park Hotel in Bagshot
around 2.50pm on Friday 27 June when the boy
approached her and physically attacked her
before sexually assaulting and raping her. He
fled after she screamed for help.
An investigation was immediately launched by
the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team and
the boy was arrested on Sunday 29 June.
Detective Constable Annette Bridge from the
Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said:
"The sentence given today is the result of a
lengthy and complex investigation and reflects
the severity of the offence.
“The boy not only planned his attack but
then initially denied his guilt by providing two
different and clearly thought out defences which
were totally untrue. Not once throughout the
investigation did he show any genuine remorse
and he only pleaded guilty when the weight of
the evidence literally left him with nowhere else
to go.

Money Matters
with Peter Sharratt
Lump Sum Pension Investment
Q. I am a shareholding director in my own business
and I draw a low salary with the bulk of my income
coming from dividends. I want to make a lump sum
investment in to my pension but I am unclear as to
how much I can actually put in. I have read in some
literature included in my recent pension statement
that I can contribute up to £40,000 but elsewhere
it mentioned that I cannot put in more than my
salary. What are the limits?
A. The maximum you can personally invest in
to a pension is 100% of your salary subject to a
maximum annual allowance which is currently
£40,000. Please note dividends are not classed as
salary. If as an example you have a salary of £8,000
and dividends of £45,000 the maximum you can
personally invest is £8,000.
However, contributions that are made by your
company in to a pension for you are NOT
restricted by your salary; your company can invest
the full annual allowance maximum of £40,000
and potentially more than this using carry forward
(more on this later). Please note you will need to
satisfy what is called the ‘wholly & exclusively’
requirement but as a shareholding director this
should not be a problem.
Heathrow apologises for withheld
flight changes over local skies
From a tax perspective personal contributions
in to a pension (ignoring the contribution limits)
would be made by you from ‘after tax’ income.
The contribution would then qualify for basic
rate tax relief at source and higher rate tax relief,
if applicable, could be claimed via your selfassessment tax return. The deadline for a personal
investment tax wise is the end of the tax year.
Company contributions in to a pension investment
will be a deductible business expense and so reduce
the amount of Corporation Tax your company
pays. Any contribution is also NOT subject to
National Insurance. The deadline for a company
investment tax wise is your company’s year-end
which is likely to be different to the tax year.
Heathrow Airport has issued an apology to residents
of Virginia Water, Ascot, Binfield and Bracknell
who complained about an increase in flights over
the local area.
Heathrow Chief Executive John Holland-Kaye
said they were misinformed.
Flight patterns over Surrey and Berkshire were
changed by National Air Traffic Services in 2014,
but the airport was not informed.
Residents were adamant that noise from aircraft
had increased but were repeatedly told that no
changes had been made.
As previously reported in LIVING WITHIN,
airspace trials were carried out last year, ending in
November.
But changes made to the Compton route in June
are still operational. As planes now climb through
a seven mile airpace rather than the previous 13
miles, there is a greater concentration of flights over
Ascot, Binfield, Bracknell and Virginia Water.
The route is used for 6 per cent of total departures.
Following complaints from residents, Heathrow
asked National Air Traffic Services if there had been
any other airspace changes. As National Air Traffic
Services said there had been none, Heathrow made
public assurances to residents. Following further
investigations, the earlier procedural change was
then identified which has led to a change in flight
patterns over some communities to the south and
As mentioned earlier your company can possibly
invest more than £40,000 as you can carry forward
any unused annual allowances from the 3 previous
tax years. To be eligible for carry forward you must
have been a member of a pension scheme during the
carry forward years although you do not actually
need to have been making contributions. By using
carry forward it is possible to actually invest up to
£180,000 because the annual allowance in two of
the three previous tax years was £50,000.
Before making any investment I would suggest
that you get specific advice.

southwest of Heathrow.
National Air Traffic Services has apologised
to Heathrow Airport for not highlighting the
operational change to air traffic control.
A spokesman said steps have now been taken to
ensure more robust processes are in place to share
relevant information with Heathrow so that they are
aware of any changes that may be noticed by local
residents.
Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye said: "I am
very concerned that [National Air Traffic Services]
made this change without informing the airport or
affected communities about its potential impact,
particularly given its effects on some of the same
areas to the west of the airport that were affected by
the airspace trials we ran last year. Because of the
assurances we received, we in turn told residents
in good faith that no changes had occurred. That is
unacceptable and I unequivocally apologise to local
residents.
"At my request, the Chief Executive of [National
Air Traffic Services] has agreed to urgently review
his company’s processes to ensure that [National
Air Traffic Services] shares this information with
the airport to prevent this happening again in the
future."
Meanwhile, National Air Traffic Services said
the number of flight departures over Windlesham,
Lightwater and Bagshot have been reduced.
Virginia Water Pavilion
picks up national award
The Crown Estate's Virginia Water Pavilion in
Windsor Great Park was a winner at this year's
Civic Trust Award ceremony in London.
Nick Day, Head of Commercial Operations,
The Crown Estate, said: "We are delighted to
receive this award for the Pavilion which has
provided much needed facilities to visitors to
Virginia Water Lake, The Valley Gardens and the
surrounding area of Windsor Great Park. The
design of the building also needed to respect the
Grade 1 listed landscape in which it sits and this
award recognises that achievement."
The pavilion provides visitors with a refreshment
kiosk providing hot and cold food throughout the
year, public conveniences including baby changing
facilities and it will act as a centre for visitor
information and support. The external terrace
provides generous seating and offers enhanced
views of Virginia Water Lake.
The external cladding of the building has made
extensive use of timber to provide a further
means to reduce its impact and enable it to sit
comfortably within a woodland glade. The timber
has been grown and harvested on the Windsor
estate where all forestry operations are FSC
certified. Some 195 cubic metres of Douglas Fir
have been used for the structure of the building,
with 125 cubic metres of oak used for the
cladding.
Commenting on the Virginia Water Pavilion, the
Civic Trust said: "The building design was selected
as competition winner for its simplicity, elegance
and clean lines. Constructed predominantly of
Windsor Estate timber and embodying many
sustainable features, the building reflects the
Crown Estate's core values of commercialism,
integrity and stewardship. The extensive use
of English oak, both inside and outside of the
spectacular building was a requirement of
the design competition brief, reflecting the
importance of oak within the Great Park as veteran
trees, woodland and parkland trees."
The Pavilion has been designed to be as
sustainable a building as possible. With energy
efficient LED lighting throughout, additional
features include PV solar panel cells on the roof
to generate energy, a rainwater harvesting system
to reduce reliance on mains water for flushing
toilets and air source heat pumps to provide
background heating for the building.

Seven Michelin stars lined up
for Royal Ascot fine dining
Ascot Racecourse has announced that Fine
Dining at Royal Ascot 2015 will be headlined
by twice Michelin starred chefs, Michael
Caines and Phil Howard who will each host a
restaurant on all five days of the Royal Meeting
this year. Michael and Phil will be joined by
Raymond Blanc, who is designing an exclusive
menu for this year's Private Boxes, and Angela
Hartnett, who is creating an exclusive picnic
for Royal Enclosure guests in the Winning Post
Gardens in partnership with Smart. Between
them, the chefs involved hold seven Michelin
stars and will create an exciting, high quality
Fine Dining experience for racegoers this year.
Michael Caines was mentored by Raymond
Blanc at Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons in
Oxfordshire and is now Executive Chef
at Gidleigh Park. He will be serving his
distinctive modern European cuisine in On5,
the racecoure's multimillion pound restaurant
that opened to excellent reviews at the Royal
Meeting in 2014. Phil Howard, co-owner of
the Square and winner of Great British Menu
in 2012 will bring his love of home grown
ingredients to create a spectacular menu in The
Panoramic Restaurant.
Michael Caines said, "Ascot is renowned
for its excellent Fine Dining and wonderful
service and Royal Ascot as one of Britain's
most prestigious sporting and social occasions.
It's an amazing venue and I am very proud
to be a part of this year's event. I hope my
passion for cooking combined with the unique
surroundings and added flair of the experience
I bring from Gidleigh Park will create an
unforgettable day for my guests."
Phil Howard said: "I came to Royal Ascot
for the first time in 2014, as a guest, and
was bowled over by what a unique and truly
spectacular occasion it is. I'm really looking
forward to being a part of this year's event,
from the kitchen this time, and using my
interest in British ingredients to create a
stunning menu to match the spectacle of a
day at Royal Ascot. We have been growing our
own vegetables within the grounds of Fulham
Palace for a year now and using them at The
Square is something I am very proud of. I am
greatly looking forward to bringing them to the
Royal Meeting this year."
Angela Hartnett, one of Britain's most
successful and best-loved chefs, is creating
exclusive picnics for Royal Enclosure guests in
the Winning Post Gardens.
Excluding On5 and The Panoramic
Restaurant, menus for the most part are
designed by Ascot's Executive Chef, Steve
Golding who was recently a runner-up for the

Coworth Flexlands’ girls celebrate
senior school success
This term Coworth Flexlands' Year 6 girls built
on the School's academic success celebrating
another set of results in the senior school entrance
examinations. The class of 16 girls was offered 25
places across a range of top senior schools, with
Art and Music Scholarships secured at two senior
schools.
Places have been accepted at Gordons,

themselves for the move to senior school. Last
month Year 5 & 6 have been to the Isle of Wight
on an educational residential trip taking in the
Mary Rose and HMS Warrior before catching the

After a rigorous selection and shortlisting

democratic right to vote in the 2015/2016
head Girl election at The Marist Senior School,
Sunninghill. The outcome heralded Ellena
Savage as Head Girl and Liberty Rowe as
Deputy Head Girl.
The Marist Schools are renowned for offering
pupils a well-rounded education. Academic
results are consistently high and great emphasis
is also placed on sport, drama, music, creative
arts and the global dimension of a Marist
education.
Both Ellena and Liberty have been actively
involved in all areas of Marist school life from
competing at a high level on the sports field,
the debating chamber, performing on stage
and achieving stellar public exam results last
summer. In addition, Ellena and Liberty have
participated in activities and initiatives such
as charitable fundraising, enterprise projects,
exchange opportunity with the Marist Brothers'
school in Durban and work with the Holocaust
Memorial Trust.
Head teacher, Karl McCloskey warmly
congratulated the girls on their success and
added: "The quality and calibre of the applicants
was of the highest order. Whilst this is a
wonderful endorsement of Marist education in
itself, it makes it virtually impossible to separate
or to distinguish between equally strong
candidates. At a time like this, I am glad that the
final phase of the selection process is determined
by the voting system because I would find it
virtually impossible to choose otherwise. This
said, Ellena and Liberty will make an excellent

source of pride to the school, and credit to their

that their term of office will be characterised by
acts of service and a legacy of personal goodness

The next phase of work to Bracknell Forest's roads network got underway late last month on the A322 Bagshot
Road. The speed limit on the Bagshot Road approaching and through the junction has been reduced to 40mph.
Signs are being used to warn drivers that fixed speed cameras are in operation.
Insp Dave Bryan, from Thames Valley Police, said: "The redevelopment and improvements taking place in
Bracknell will have an impact on the volumes of traffic in the borough. We thank the public for their patience and
support with the safety measures in place for road users and for the workforce to deliver a safe timely completion."
The £3m scheme to replace the existing roundabout at Coral Reef with a four way traffic light junction is
designed to manage the expected increase in vehicle numbers as the borough grows and develops over the next
10 years.
The work phases have been designed to keep both lanes of the A322 open for the majority of the project and to
limit traffic disruption. There may, however, be some impact on traffic flows during the later stages of the scheme,
which is scheduled to be fully open by the autumn of 2016.

Some 70 guests sat in darkness, crockery was
smashed and extra hands were called in to help with
the washing up; but no matter what was thrown at
them, the ladies of Ascot Inner Wheel kept the show
on the road at Cheapside Village Hall.
The evening was part of a wider international event

the development and delivery of prosthetic services

high expectations, chat and a degree of uncertainty
about what they might expect.
In the event, the Inner Wheel ladies produced
a wonderful main course of Caribbean Chicken

By preparing the food themselves they were able
to minimise costs, raising £1,062 for 500 Miles.
It was a phenomenal result made possible only
by the generosity of all the club members, their

Two short videos were shown describing the

Local schools come together for
festival of sport at LVS Ascot
Twelve junior schools from across Berkshire
and beyond descended on LVS Ascot for the
Junior School Festival of Sport 2015. LVS Ascot
welcomed over 200 pupils who came together for
a fantastic celebration of sport and competition
designed to share its ethos of promoting outdoor
education and soft skills such as confidence and
sporting behaviour.
With four football pitches and three netball
courts in use at the same time, LVS Ascot’s
extensive sporting facilities were a sea of school
colours as local teams competed against schools
from Hampshire and Middlesex, emphasising the
growing reputation the annual event has built up
amongst the junior school community.
Managed and hosted by staff at the independent
all-ability school for children from 4 to 18, the
event received great support from watching
parents and LVS Ascot’s senior school students.
All teams played in three group stage matches and
then progressed to knockout phases in Cup, Plate,
Vase and Shield competitions to ensure everyone
present was able to enjoy a full programme of sport
and that teams of all abilities spent far more time
on the pitch than off it.
LVS Ascot Head of Junior School Nick Funnell,
who presented ‘Player of the Tournament’ awards
to Louie Holzman of Meadow Vale Primary School
and Hannah Williams of Mayville High School,
said: "This is a true, inclusive celebration of sport
for which LVS Ascot is rightly famous and proud.
Everyone has had a fabulous day and the weather
has been great too – we were ready to use our new
all-weather sports pitch if required but that hasn’t
been necessary."
The netball event saw Mayville High School win
the big prize, taking the Cup out of Berkshire back
to Southsea in Hampshire having beaten Meadow
Vale Primary school in the final, whilst LVS Ascot
gained home success in the Vase. LVS Ascot PE
teacher Rebecca Smillie, who organised the netball
tournament, said: "We have created the perfect
opportunity for young children to participate in
competitive sport in a fun environment. The most
important thing is that they enjoy themselves, and
looking around that message has definitely sunk in."
The football final was an all Bracknell affair, with
Meadow Vale defeating Holly Spring A in a high
quality affair. After watching his jubilant team lift
the trophy, Paul Tatum from Meadow Vale said:
"The LVS Ascot Junior School Festival of Sport
has been in our calendar for the last few years – it is
really well organised and the competition is fierce
and friendly which is good to see. The event does a
great job of getting kids involved in sport and is a
fun day out."

Training course date for volunteers
looking to help support people at
home facing life-threatening illness
Life threatening conditions are not something
we plan for. News that a loved one has cancer or
other life threatening condition comes as a great
shock. From that moment their life expectancy
is changed, their lives have changed and the
impact on the lives of those closest to them has
changed as all struggle to cope in coming to
terms with what lies ahead.
When a family member is diagnosed with
cancer or another life-threatening illness it
can be a lonely and frightening time. The
Brigitte Trust, in partnership with Macmillan
Cancer Support, offers a free volunteer service
of emotional support and practical help at
home. The service may also provide the family
carer with a break, driving to medical or other
appointments, shopping or just sitting quietly
and listening.
The Brigitte Trust, a registered charity
celebrating its 30th Anniversary in 2015, works
closely with health professionals and hospices
complementing their service by offering clients
and their family members time to share feelings
and concerns as well as practical help at home
when everyday tasks may have become more
difficult. Our volunteers also help clients access
community support.
The Brigitte Trust is recruiting for its next
training course starting in June 2015. Through
the programme volunteers will be equipped with
the skills to provide emotional support to people
and their families facing the huge challenges of
life threatening illness.
To express interest in becoming a volunteer or
just to find out more call 01306 881816 or visit

Wisley, Kew, Polesden Lacey and
Claremont Garden record big
increase in visitor numbers
Visitors to the region's top garden attractions have
increased by around 6 per cent, according to the
Association of Leading Visitor Attractions.
Kew was named one of the top 20 most popular
visitor attractions in the UK, attracting 1,023,715
visitors in 2014 - a 6 per cent increase over the
previous year.
London's British Museum continues to be the
most popular visitor attraction in the UK followed
by The National Gallery and the Southbank Centre.
Kew is number 19 in the list, one ahead of Tate
Britain. RHS Wisley came in 30th place, which was
four ahead of the Eden Project. But Hampton Court
Palace saw a fall of 1 per cent in visitor numbers.
With 560,513 visitors it came in 56th place.
Polesden Lacey had 340,690 visitors, which
was a whopping 10 per cent increase. Claremont
Landscape Garden recorded a 6 per cent increase
with 182,350 visitors.
Museums & Galleries throughout the UK saw
a 6.09 per cent increase. Blockbuster exhibitions
continued to boost visitor numbers - with Tate
Modern welcoming a record 5,785,427 visitors
(4th place) - which was undoubtedly helped by
the Matisse exhibition, while the Ashmolean
Museum in Oxford saw a 16% increase aided by
the successful exhibitions of Francis Bacon / Henry
Moore, followed by Cezanne.
Bernard Donoghue, Director of the Association
of Leading Visitor Attractions, said: "Looking
forward to our 2015 figures, we are confident that
they will rise again with the anticipated increase in
overseas visitors this year, but we can also tell from
membership and Friends schemes that the Brits
are voting for tourism with their feet and wallets.
Our members continue to develop and push the
boundaries with more ground-breaking and
innovative exhibitions, which will attract record
numbers such as Alexander McQueen: Savage
Beauty at the V&A from March 14, to Audrey
Hepburn: Portraits of an Icon at the National
Portrait Gallery, which opens on July 2."
Taxing
Times
with Graham Jennings
Q: I run a small business in the plumbing trade and I
need to buy a new van as my current one is becoming
unreliable. I really could do without the cost at the
moment so I am thinking about financing it. What
tax breaks are there to help me out with this?
A: There are a number of tax breaks available to you to
help take the sting out of the cost. The first one is VAT.
You do not mention whether you are VAT registered
but if you are your business can reclaim the VAT
charged to you. If you are buying second hand then
you will need to check with the seller whether there is
any VAT included within the selling price. If there is
do make sure you get a VAT invoice which states the
amount of VAT paid as evidence for your reclaim. If
you are buying new then there will be VAT included. If
the VAT inclusive price is, say, £20,000 then you will be
able to reclaim £3,333 in VAT.

copyright: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
The next allowance that needs to be considered is the
‘Annual investment allowance’. This allowance allows
a business to claim the full cost of capital expenditure
against profits in the year of purchase. The allowance
is currently very generous and is available for up to
£500,000 worth of capital items purchased between
now and 31 December 2015. This should be more
than sufficient for most small businesses. In tax terms
this would save tax and national insurance of between
29% and 47% of the cost of the van depending upon
level of earnings and the highest rate of tax you pay.
So using the example of the £20,000 van for a basic
rate tax payer the van would save £4,833 in tax and
national insurance in the year of purchase. So after
VAT and tax relief the van has cost £11,834.
In the recent budget the chancellor said that the
generous annual investment allowance would
continue beyond 2015 although he did say what it
would be other than that a reduction to £25,000 from
1 January 2016 “would not be remotely acceptable”.
Finally, you mentioned that you would be looking
to finance the purchase of the van and I assume you
mean by way of a bank loan or hire purchase. Whilst
finance increases the overall cost of the van, because
you will have interest to pay, the interest is also tax
deductible against profits. The interest is spread over
the term of the financing so you will get relief for this
over a few years.

Epsom Derby Festival Ambassadors named 150mph Ferrari
The Investec Derby Festival has announced
their 2015 Ambassador line-up starring fashion
entrepreneur and TV star Millie Mackintosh,
Britain's best-loved champion jockey Frankie
Dettori MBE, Olympic Gold Medallist and BBC
athletics presenter champion Denise Lewis OBE,
presenter and DJ Laura Whitmore and twostar Michelin chef Michel Roux Jnr. This year's
ambassadors were chosen to represent the many
elements that together make up the world famous
Derby Festival; from food to racing, fashion to
music.
The stable of talent were photographed together
to launch this year's Derby which takes place on
Friday 5 and Saturday 6 June. The world famous
Derby is considered one of the greatest sporting
and social events in the British calendar and is
estimated to attract over 125,000 visitors.
Millie Mackintosh said: "Racing is one of those
rare opportunities to combine glamorous outfits
with statement hats. I paired a Hobbs dress and
Philip Treacy hat during the shoot which I loved.
The Derby is the pinnacle of the summer season
and I'm looking forward to enjoying a spectacular
day out."
This will be Laura Whitmore's third year
attending the Investec Derby. She said the fashion
is just as much of a spectacle as the racing - "Which
is one of the reasons I love it. I really enjoyed the
shoot, getting to experience it with such a great
group of people was fun!"
Frankie Dettori commented: "The Investec
Derby is the most prestigious event in the racing
calendar and the ultimate test for horses and their
riders. It took me 15 attempts to win a Derby and
taking home the trophy in 2007 will always remain
one of my career highlights. The race still stands as

The driver of a Ferrari California has been arrested
following an incident in which two police cars
clocked the vehicle travelling at 150mph. The driver
was caught on the clockwise carriageway of the M25,
travelling between Junction 8 at Reigate and the A3
Wisley Interchange ay Junction 10.
The driver, from London, has been placed on bail
until Monday 18 May and his supercar has been
seized.
The police force tweeted a message
alongside a photo of the car:
the greatest flat race in the world and the one every
jockey wants to win."
This is the second consecutive year Michel Roux
and Michel Roux Jnr will have their restaurant,
Chez Roux, at the Investec Derby. "A day at the
Derby isn't just about racing - it's about food, wine,
fashion and a great atmosphere," Michel Roux Jnr
said. "It's an honour for Chez Roux to be involved
in this event again and we look forward to cooking
up a storm during the two day festival."
Denise Lewis commented: "I love sport but not
everyone knows of my love for horses, I even have
shares in racehorses with Highclere. This will be
my first time at the Investec Derby. Epsom is one of
the few tracks I haven't been to and I can't wait to
see the leading equine athletes taking on its unique
challenge."

Day tickets start at £15. For further information

Alleyway robbery
in Englefield Green
Detectives in Runnymede are appealing for
witnesses following a daylight robbery in an alleyway
in Englefield Green on Tuesday 17 March.
The incident happened as the 30-year-old victim

6.00pm. He was approached from behind by a man
on a bicycle who pushed him and then grabbed his
iPhone.
The thief is described as a stocky man who was
wearing a dark blue tracksuit with a hooded top. He
rode a black BMX bike.
Detective Constable Lyndsay Parfitt investigating
said: "This offence took place whilst it was still light in
an area which is regularly used by local residents and
students. I hope someone will have seen the offender
go in or out of the alleyway or seen the suspect acting
suspiciously in the area just before the robbery. This
was a frightening experience for the victim and I
would urge anyone with information which could

ROYAL BOROUGH BEATS EUROPEAN
RECYCLING TARGET
The Royal Borough has beaten the deadline to meet
European targets for recycling.
The EU target is for all local authorities to recycle 50
percent of their waste by 2020. The Royal Borough
currently recycles 51.7 percent of its waste and is on
track to recycle even more by 2020.
The council also operates weekly bin collections for
both recycling and general refuse and has separate
green garden waste and food waste collections.
Cllr Carwyn Cox, cabinet member for
environmental services, said: "It is thanks to the
fantastic efforts of residents that we have already met
the EU's recycling targets for local authorities.
"We also recognise how much our residents value
weekly bin collections and are delighted to see how
many people have also opted into our green garden
waste collection scheme."
However, residents are urged to ensure the items
they place in their recycling bins are suitable.
Unusual items which have mistakenly been placed
in recycling bins in the Royal Borough include space
hoppers, stone gargoyles and duvets.
A large amount of clothing is also placed in recycling
bins and has to be removed before the waste can be
reprocessed. Unwanted clothing should be placed in
charity clothing bins, situated around the borough,
or if it is still in good condition it can be handed in at
charity shops.
Cllr Cox said: "It's clear that our residents are great
at recycling but if we all work together we can do even
better.
"Placing items in the recycling bin, such as clothing
and plastic carrier bags, that cannot be recycled
increases the time spent processing waste as they
must be removed by hand.
"We would urge residents to find other ways of
recycling or reusing these items so we can further
reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill."
Royal Holloway involved in successful
bid for new University technical college
A new college has been given the go-ahead to train
the next generation of cyber security, computing
and engineering experts in Surrey. Plans have
been approved for a university technical college in
Guildford for around 700 teenagers.
The bid to build the college, which is set to open
in September 2017, was put together by a group
including Surrey County Council, global information
technology company CGI and Royal Holloway,
University of London. Guildford College and
Guildford Education Partnership were among the
other backers.
Professor Paul Hogg, Vice Principal and Dean of
Science at Royal Holloway, University of London,
said: “As the world celebrates the 800th anniversary
of the sealing of Magna Carta in Runnymede, home
to Royal Holloway, this year we are reminded of these
modern threats to our freedom and personal liberty.
“At the new UTC, some of Royal Holloway’s
brightest minds will inspire young people from
across the UK, helping them to develop skills that will
directly benefit the country as it faces these new and
complex challenges.”
Surrey County Council's Cabinet Member for
Schools and Learning Linda Kemeny said: “With
the ever growing threats posed by cyber crime it
will specialise in computer science and training the
next generation of experts to protect businesses,
government and the general public from attacks
while also helping to ease the huge strain on school
places in the county."
Tim Gregory, President CGI UK, said: "We are
delighted to support this initiative to develop and
professionalise ICT skills in young people. As a major
UK employer, we are keen to encourage the next
generation of IT professionals.
"With the developments in technology driving
a digitised world, and the need for key skills such
as cyber security, there are so many exciting
opportunities for the future and Guildford UTC will
help to ensure that young people have the skills to
become an essential part of the new digital economy."
Kit Kardashian needs a home
A big bottomed cat from Surrey is looking for a
permanent home after her owner sadly died. Dubbed
'Kit Kardashian' because of her very large behind,
nine-year-old Phoebe is currently in foster care at
Blue Cross until she finds a new home. She currently
weighs 8.4kg and will need to stick to a special diet
programme to reduce her weight - and her rear.
Blue Cross has quoted Phoebe as saying: "I'm
a very sweet girl, but these cheeky Blue Cross
people have nicknamed me Kit Kardashian
because my bottom is a bit too big! They have
put me on a weight reducing diet to help me feel
more comfortable - it's not what I've been used
too but I feel much better for it already and have
been learning how to play so that I exercise too. My
foster carer tries to take my mind off my food by
playing with me and stroking and combing me - all
of which I love! I am looking forward to finding
a new home, with an owner who will continue to
help me reduce my weight. I would probably be
better if I lived as an only cat as this is what I have
been used to, and also it would mean that there
wouldn't be any other food around for me to help
myself too. I like exploring in the garden so would
really like a garden in my new home."
If you would like to meet Phoebe or want to know
more about her, telephone 0300 777 1929.

Behind the 14th century Sloop Inn on the Wharf

COMPOST
Sometimes gardening seems to be nothing
more than a load of rubbish! Garden rubbish,
that is, which you are probably producing en
masse at the moment. Mower boxes full of lawn
clippings, trugs full of weeds, not to mention
all the leaves and dead stems from plants
that you didn’t get round to clearing up over
the winter. Even a small garden produces a
surprising amount of rubbish. I spent a couple
of days last week pruning and sorting out a tiny
courtyard garden and there was hardly room
for all the bags of rubbish I produced by the end
of it. So what to do with all this green waste?
The council collection service is one option, or
you could spend your Saturdays queuing to get
into to the local dump. However, a good way of
dealing with at least some of the material is to
start a home compost heap.
Producing your own compost for the garden
isn’t particularly difficult, it just takes time and
patience. Everything will rot down if you leave
it for long enough, the trick is to make it rot
faster so you can get on with using the finished
product in your garden to improve the soil.
Good Gardening
with Alison Jones
April Gardening with Alison Jones
Spring is finally here, the temperature is climbing
and gardens are waking up. Give your garden some
attention by refreshing it with a flowering shrub or
two. This is an ideal time of year to get new shrubs
established, while the soil is damp and those April
showers will help with watering in. Browse round
the garden centre for inspiration.
The marguerite or Argyranthemum is one of our
plants of the month. It’s a charming daisy-like flower
in shades of white and yellow, through to pink and
purple. It looks lovely in garden borders or planted
in a container. Marguerite prefers full sun and welldrained soil. It can grow from one to three feet tall
and wide, flowering from now through the summer.
It’s popular with butterflies, and if you deadhead the
flowers, it will bloom prolifically.
Our other two plants of the month are the
rhododendron and the hydrangea. They are coming
into their prime now and look stunning in containers.
Healthy rhododendron specimens have loads of
colour, supported with lush green hardy foliage.
There are shades to match all tastes, from light pinks
to dark reds, purples, creams and white.
Both the rhododendron and hydrangea make
beautiful houseplants, and you can also plant them
outside. The hydrangea has gorgeous blooms with
the wow factor. In the garden it can look good planted
in front of larger shrubs, which will also give it some
much needed shade. In a sheltered spot it takes very
little care. Originally from woodland, they prefer
shady positions, although some can tolerate sunshine
– ask for advice in the garden centre if you’re unsure.
The rhododendron is ericaceous or acid-loving. If
you don’t have acid soil, plant it in generous amounts
of ericaceous soil from the garden centre to give it a
good start. You can also treat it to a regular ericaceous
feed during the flowering season and when it finishes
flowering. After planting use mulch, such as chipped
bark around the base of the plant to protect the roots
from drying out as they are fairly close to the surface.
Don’t give tap water to ericaceous plants – opt
instead for rainwater or boiled water from the kettle
that has cooled down.
You need a space about 1m2 for the ideal
compost bin. It can be in a shady position,
so maybe a place where you find it hard to
get anything to grow. You can buy all sorts
of different types of bins. Some look like old
fashioned beehives, some are large, plastic
daleks, (designed to EXTERMINATE!), some
are simple timber cubes. Choose something
you like to look at, if it is in plain view, or save
money on something simple if it is to be hidden
away.
You can also make your own quite easily from
some old pallets – well, I managed to make one
and I have no DIY skills whatsoever, so it can’t
be hard!
The key points to consider are that the bin
allows drainage, lets some air in, and retains
some warmth. It also needs to keep out
torrential rain, though you do need some
moisture, and it helps to water the heap when
the weather is dry.
Making the compost is like making a huge
club sandwich. You need layers, about 60:40
bread layers and juicy filling layers. The bread
layers are woody, brown material like chopped
up prunings, straw and shredded paper. These
add carbon to the heap and keep it aerated.
The sandwich filling layers are things like
grass clippings, young weeds and fruit and
vegetable peelings. These provide nitrogen.
You will probably find that you produce far
more sandwich filling than bread, so it’s a good
idea to buy a bale of straw to keep near the heap
to make a layer when needed. Mix up layers of
grass clippings into some straw too, or they
tend to collapse into a slimy mass.
To speed up the composting process and
make better compost, it helps to turn the heap
occasionally. If you have two compost bins, turn
everything from the first bin into the second,
when the first bin is full. If not, take everything
out of the bin and put it back in. It must be
said that this is hard work. The alternative is
to just be patient. It can take over a year for
the compost to turn into a
brown, crumbly material
as good as chocolate cake
crumbs. I can just hear the
garden licking its lips at the
thought!
– Linda Regel
As always, keep on top of weeding to stop them
taking over. It’s easy to pull up a few weeds here and
there when you’re out enjoying your garden bursting
into life. If you don’t already have a water butt, think
about investing in one so it can be full up by the time
the hot dry weather is with us. A mulch of compost
or well-rotted manure around established shrubs and
hedges will help keep moisture in the soil as well as
keeping weeds at bay.
Lastly, a quick reminder that there is a huge
selection of hardy shrubs and perennials of all sizes
and colours ready to plant into containers and
borders. If you’re getting into Grow Your Own,
there are masses of fruit and veg varieties ready to be
planted.
– Until next month, happy gardening!

SPORT TO BUSINESS
There are very similar analogies in sport and
business and very small margins of success and
failure in both. I have found this to be true, since
my 12 years in the GB Rowing Squad and setting
up and running my own personal training and
coaching business.
Commitment & Assessment
Make sure you commit your goals to paper. No
athlete or business person can consistently achieve
success without a continuous cycle of assessment
re evaluation. This process allows the athlete to
stay on track and can act as a journey to success.
Measurable goals
You will achieve more if you set yourself smaller
steps towards measurable goals. If your goal is
too large you may get overwhelmed by the size of
it. Breaking it down into doable chunks is easier
on the mind. Every athlete has firmly established
and measurable long-term goals with shorter-term
goals to provide stepping-stones to success.
are key for any success in sport. The failures are
often the place where the most important lessons
are learned, but only if you are willing to learn from
them.
Hurtigruten
A cruise feature by Greenstar Travel
Peaks & valleys
In a journey towards success there is bound to be
peaks and valleys of success and failure. A great
athlete will not be too upset by short-term failure
but equally will not be over excited by short-term
success. Balance, creates less distraction and a
higher likelihood of staying on track.
Resilience
Every athlete understands that the journey to
excellence is not an overnight one. The ability
to set a progression path and stay on it, not just
through one season but for multiple seasons is not
easy. To move from average to great takes time,
many performers in business and life have often
looked back and quoted, ‘it takes 10 years to be
great at anything’.
Passion
If the above rings true, it is close to impossible to
excel in sport or business without passion. This is
a passion for the goal, the journey and the whole
thing. If the passion is not there, the performance
will never shine or at least not shine for long.
– Good luck

Adversity
Many athletes thrive in stressful situations (they

us!) and do not panic when plans go wrong. They

that they can influence. Adaptability and resilience

April 2015 LIVING WITHIN
Poised as we are on the brink of spring and fresh
green, and finding some broad beans in a local
market (local to South West France at time of
writing - ever so slightly ahead of South East
England, season-wise), and with Moroccan
produce located at a stall not too far down the
line, I was tempted by the idea of sunshine,
lemons, greenery and couscous, and a yearning
for some Moroccan zest and Eastern promise.
‘Broad’, ‘Windsor’ or ‘Horse’; ‘Fèves’, ‘Ful’ or
‘Fava’, these beans have many guises in many
parts of the world, and much history that sits
alongside the names and places. Eaten since
ancient times and imbued with almost equal
parts of myth and wisdom, they are a staple in
Middle-Eastern and North-African dishes, often
in their matured, dried and dull-coloured form.
But at this time of year when they start to appear
at their youngest and brightest, it might be that
they cook and taste best, having not yet developed
either too much starch or too many additional
complications.
The couscous-based broad bean salad featured
here can be as complicated or as simple as you
choose to make it; you can spend time aerating the
couscous and steaming it subtly, or you can pour
over boiling water and follow simple instructions
on a packet; likewise you can peel the beans or
leave them with soft leather wrinkled jackets, but
whatever time you save on these potentially timeconsuming aspects, you will need to pod these
most indulged beans, and pop them out of their
padded velvety cases as a necessary first step.
Buy more than you think that you need and allow
more time than you think it will take to shell them
- co-opt family or friends wherever possible or put
on the radio and settle down to enjoy the task.
Once you have a pile of podded beans, put them
in a shallow saucepan (big enough that they are
not too crammed together) with two or three
unpeeled garlic cloves (new season will give the
best flavour), some grated spring onion (or other
gentle onion), a generous splash of olive oil,
salt, a pinch of paprika, a few saffron strands,
and a scant quarter of a pint of cold water (5 fl
oz/150ml approx.) - bring up to a lively simmer,
and then allow to cook gently for between about
5-10 minutes (until the largest of the beans is
tender). Stir in a small handful of finely chopped
fresh coriander leaves and some ground black
pepper, take off the heat, and leave for a few
minutes until the contents are cool enough to
handle. Take out the garlic cloves and remove
the skin and put to one side. If, like me, you have
perfectionist tendencies, pop the bright green
inner beans out of the slightly grey and wrinkled
jackets (and throw the jackets away) - or just
leave them be if you don’t mind eating all. Finely
chop the poached inners of the garlic cloves, add
them back to the beans in their liquid and, finally,
add a generous squeeze of lemon juice and allow
all to “steep” while you prepare the couscous.
If you are Moroccan (or a perfectionist), you will
probably “mind” about how well your couscous
is aerated and steamed and seasoned, and it will
take you (at least!) the best part of an hour to
wash and dry and manually manipulate, and leave
to absorb residual moisture, and finally to steam
in a “couscoussier”, or in a sieve suspended over
a pan of infused and aromatic boiling water; and
if we are honest, as with all things, it will make
a difference to the end result if you take this
extra time and trouble. But it will be perfectly
acceptable to buy couscous in a box that is easy,
and designed to be cooked almost instantly, and
to follow the instructions on the packet, if you
would prefer not to make too big a deal of the
process. Whichever way you choose, once your
couscous is cooked, sprinkle it with a little olive
oil, check it for seasoning (and adjust if it is too
bland), put it in a serving dish, move it around
with a couple of forks to distribute the oil and the
seasoning and to remove any lumps, and then add
in your broad beans and their liquor (check this
for seasoning too, just before you do), and mix
all together gently. Leave for a few minutes for
the two parts to get to know each other, and then
serve as a salad.

Classic Hungarian Goulash Soup
2 medium size tins of chopped tomatoes
500ml good beef stock
1 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp caraway seed
Extra Virgin olive oil
Salt and pepper
I have only ever had the soup version of
the classic Hungarian Goulash once, in
Switzerland many years ago.
Cut the steak into very small pieces and seasoned
with flour black pepper and paprika. Fry the red
onion, garlic and the seasoned steak in the heated
olive oil for about 5 minutes, until meat browned and
onions softened. Then stir a tablespoon of flour and a
teaspoon of smoked paprika into the pot. Add the two
tins of chopped tomatoes, the sundried tomato, the
sugar, caraway seed and finally the stock.
I usually make soups in my Le Creuset pot, so
something similar would be ideal.
Allow the soup to simmer for about 45 minutes,
adding salt and pepper to taste.
YOU WILL NEED
500g chuck steak / braising beef steak
Black pepper
Smoked paprika
2 red onions finely diced
3 cloves garlic finely chopped
1 small jar of sundried tomatoes chopped
Sour cream and caraway bread are perfect with
this soup.
