Duffy
In His Own Words
• Brian Duffy is best known as one of the great British
fashion photographers of the 1960s and 70s, and one of
the greatest innovators of documentary fashion
photography
Brian Duffy defined the image of the 1960s, and was as famous as the
stars he photographed.Together with David Bailey and Terence
Donovan, he is recognised as one of the innovators of "documentary"
fashion photography, a style which revolutionised fashion imagery and
furthermore the fashion industry. Swinging London had arrived and
Duffy was in the thick of it.The press nicknamed the three
photographers 'The Terrible Three'. Norman Parkinson added to their
notoriety by naming them 'The Black Trinity.'

Duffy's first commission came from Ernestine Carter, the then fashion
editor of The Sunday Times. From there he was hired by British Vogue. In
the 1960s Duffy worked for many of the major fashion magazines and
papers. His list of subjects was a role call of the celebrities of that
time: Sidney Poitier, Michael Caine,Tom Courtney, Sammy Davis JNR,
Nina Simone, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Charlton Heston and
William Burroughs. Duffy's most famous photograph dates from the
1970s and is the iconic cover of David Bowie's album Aladdin Sane. He
was also critically acclaimed for advertising campaigns for Benson &
Hedges and Smirnoff.
Notoriously, in 1979 Duffy decided to give up photography, burning
many of his negatives in a symbolic fire in his back garden. Many
negatives were lost but in 2009, at the behest of his son, Chris, Duffy
resumed work as a photographer and shot images of people he had
photographed in the 1960s and '70s. Recently many negatives have
been discovered and salvaged. Brian Duffy died on 31 May 2010.

Edited by Arthur Rüegg. Essays by René Burri, Oscar Niemeyer and Arthur Rüegg
2010 marked the 50th anniversary of Brazil’s capital Brasilia. Architects L˙cio Costa and
Oscar Niemeyer designed what has become the world’s most famous and widely studied
urban planning project. The entire city, marked by its cross-shaped layout and vast open
spaces, was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. René Burri, celebrated
Magnum photographer, visited Brasilia’s vast building sites for the first time in 1958. He
returned many times over the years, documenting with his camera growth and further
development of this built Utopia. René Burri. Brasilia presents a large selection from hundreds
of colour and black-and-white photographs, the majority of them published in this book for
the first time. It allows the reader for the first time to look at one of the most extraordinary
cities with the eyes of an exceptional photographer. Text in English & German.

Bruno Cattani
Photographs: Mid 19th to Early 20th Century
Memories
Italo Zannier and Angelo Maggi
Edited by Sandro Parmiggiani
The 200 photographs in this book range from Venice’s
beginnings to the 1930s.They are divided into sectors devoted
to the provinces of the Veneto - Belluno,Treviso, Padua, Rovigo,
Vicenza,Verona and naturally Venice and its Lagoon, highlighting
the overall image of a significant part of the Grand Tour.
Included in the catalogue are autochrome images made for the
“Archives of the Planet” by the photographers of the Paris
banker Albert Kahn. There is also a noteworthy series of
pictures of street vendors in the Veneto, hand coloured and for
the most part never before seen.
Bruno Cattani gave the challenging title “Memories” to this
photographic investigation which began a few years ago
revisiting a few glimpses of his birthplace, Reggio Emilia, and
then continued and developed in other spots: here we have
before us fragments of views of the city and the countryside,
the sea and the mountain, images of the golden days of
childhood and places left behind. The photographs are steeped
in the elegiac tone of something lost and which cannot return,
the colour of memory. Text in English & Italian.
Anthony Caronia, Ania Rodríguez Alonso
Four years of research preceded this black-and-white photographic documentary into the
mysterious world of Afro-Cuban religion. The purpose of this photographic project is to
carefully report on a complex religion, its different ceremonies and rich folklore; a window
into a magical world, a world where African spirits manifest their presence in everyday
Cuban life. Besides an historical introduction chapter by Ania Rodríguez Alonso descriptions
of the religious rites and beliefs accompany the photos. Text in English and German.

A Positive View of Down’s Syndrome
Photographs by Georg Aerni
Henk van Cauwenbergh
Eva Snoijink
In this book, photographer Henk van Cauwenbergh introduces
us to the worlds of matador Jean-Baptiste Jalabert (France) and
prima ballerina Francesca Docli (Italy). The public’s favourite
‘Juan Bautista’, and ballet dancer Francesca Dolci, a flamboyant
member of the Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, are the
representatives par excellence of a world in which sports and
art seamlessly melt together. Follow both top
athletes/performers during their daily preparations preceding
each performance and be a spectator of a dazzling sham fight at
the Mediterranean! Text in English, French and Dutch.
Eva Snoijink came into contact with Pien, a little girl with Down’s syndrome. She realised
that Pien was no different from all the other children she had photographed and that her
own preconceived ideas about Down’s Syndrome were actually baseless; thus the Down’s
Upside project was born. The 101 portraits in this book let everyone take a look at the
real world of Down’s syndrome - a world far removed from the stereotypical image.
Nadine Olonetzky (ed.), Stephan Berg, Moritz Küng,
Georg Aerni is a photographic artist with a particular interest in
architecture. Educated as an architect himself, he has been
working with the camera on this subject for the past fifteen
years; this is the first comprehensive monograph on his
complete photographic work. Essays on his work in the
context of contemporary photography and on images of
architecture and landscape, and a complete catalogue of Aerni’s
oeuvre so far, round out the book. Text in English & German.

La Dolce Vita
The Golden Age of Italian Style & Celebrity
• This beautifully illustrated book features over 300
photographs (many never before published) from this
remarkable era and in so doing captures a lost world
of effortless cool and glamorous celebrity
A sweet life full of pleasure and indulgence, “La Dolce Vita” was a
phrase that entered popular usage following the success of the
1960 film La Dolce Vita written and directed by Federico Fellini and
starring Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg and Anouk Aimée. As a
phrase it has come to sum up the Golden Age of stylish
sophistication in Italy that spanned the years 1958 to 1964.This
glorious period was also marked by a rise in celebrity culture and
with it the emergence of paparazzi photographers. All the big movie
stars, from Kirk Douglas, Clark Gable,Tony Curtis and John Wayne
to Jayne Mansfield and Brigitte Bardot were candidly snapped as
they visited Rome or vacationed in Positano. Like a magnet, Italy
drew the beautiful people of the period to its playground shores
and there they were captivated by its “sweet life” of plenty. Text in
English, German & French.

Dolce&Gabbana Fashion Shows
1990-2010
1990-2010
Edited by Mondadori Electa
• Dedicated entirely to the 40 menswear collections by the
• Celebrates high quality fashion from this famous fashion
famous Italian fashion duo who launched their first menswear
collection in 1990
house, with a specially commissioned photo shoot by Gian
Paolo Barbieri
A monumental volume celebrating two decades of success, looking back
over Dolce&Gabbana’s forty menswear fashion shows, held over the last
20 years. Photos from behind the scenes, details of the clothes
themselves and shots of the cat-walk: an anthology of the style that has
transformed this brand into an icon of fashion Made in Italy. Dolce and
Gabbana have played on their Sicilian origins and inherent sensuality that
have become their trademark to imagine a range of men: from the
traditional Sicilian in his beret and vest, with his gold crucifix hanging from
a chain around his neck, to the macho with rippling abs under his shirt
and double-breasted jacket, and their more glamorous, chic playboy of
latter years embodied by the statuesque David Gandy.
Dolce&Gabbana Icons takes an in-depth look at the incredibly glamorous
fashion from this famous duo, from the impeccable cut to that painstaking
attention to detail that is so characteristic of Italian fashion. This is a truly
unique journey highlighting the details and work behind the finished
product. A Dolce&Gabbana garment is built up layer by layer, from the
first cut to the last, careful fold. The cloth is modelled and cut to
perfection, as if it were a sculpture. Every hidden stitch is hand-sewn, one
after the other, until the suit fits like a glove. The final aim is perfection,
which is why each suit is entirely handmade. The photo shoot
commissioned solely for this volume is by Gian Paolo Barbieri, one of the
most authoritative Italian photographers on an international level. The
shoot features the well-known model Adam Senn, who has also starred in
some of MTV’s most popular reality shows.

Italian Beauty is a story devoted to Italian cosmetics. A
spectacular journey in time from its millenary origins to
contemporary forms of cosmetics. Two millennia of history to
discover the key players and the evolution of the ‘culture of
beauty’ so deeply-rooted in this country: from the hedonistic
legacy of Rome to the traditions of medicinal herbs, from the
experiments with alchemy during the renaissance to the
industriousness of the late 19th century, from the boom of
leading beauty-product industrialists. Italian Beauty is a tribute to
the individual and collective intuition of a country
acknowledged as one of the most sophisticated ‘beauty-product
producers’ in the world: a highly competitive industrial system
which still associates the most futuristic technological aims with
the traditional cures of its inherited craft know-how.

Artists’ Textiles
In America and Britain 1945-1976
Geoff Rayner, Richard Chamberlain and Annamarie Stapleton
The development of textiles as an art form between 1945 and 1970, and
the extent of collaboration between artists and textile manufacturers at this
time, is unrivalled in modern art history. Raoul Dufy was the first twentiethcentury artist to become seriously and successfully involved in producing
textile designs. His work influenced and encouraged many other artists and
textile companies in Britain, on the Continent and in America. After the war
this movement really flowered with the involvement of leading artists of the
day: Picasso, Matisse, Moore, Nicholson, Steinberg, to name a few... This book
is an important and comprehensive survey of this art form in Britain and
America. There are approximately 200 colour images, many of which have
never been seen before, alongside specially commissioned photography.
Major artists featured include Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse,
Henry Moore, Saul Steinberg, Eduardo Paolozzi, Fernand Leger, Ben Nicholson.

Masterpieces from the Steppes from the Sixteenth to the
Nineteenth Century: Hoffmeister Collection
Elena Tsareva
The Hoffmeister Collection is one of the most extensive private collections of
antique and historic Turkmen knotted carpets in Western Europe and America. It
competes alongside collections from Western museums as well as those in
Russia and Turkmenistan. With almost 200 objects - among which are
distinguished carpets and bags - artistic excellence and historical significance
come together. As one of the first to do so, Hoffmeister has determined the age
of these knotted works of the Turkmen with the aid of radio-carbon techniques.
According to the results from the science and technology university ETH in
Zurich, the earliest pieces of the collection originate from the sixteenth century.
Both the cultural significance of the collection and the scientific and artistic value
of its pieces are discussed in this book. The readers can really sense the texture
of these knotted wares through the brilliant photography, which carries them
away on a journey into the lost world of the Steppes folk of Central Asia.

Welcome to Big Biba
Inside the Most Beautiful Store in the World
Steven Thomas, Alwyn W Turner
Elena Tsareva is a curator and scientist and worked for some decades at the
Russian Ethnographic Museum in St. Petersburg before switching to the
Kunstkamera in St. Petersburg. As a specialist for Central Asian and North
Eurasian art she specialises in carpets and textiles.
Big Biba, the final flowering of Barbara Hulanicki's legendary Biba store in London, was a
shop like no other, before or since. It was a fabulous fantasy palace that brought the
indulgence of Hollywood to the world of retail. Welcome to Big Biba is the first book
dedicated entirely to this dreamland, with over 150 colour photographs of the store and of
the products and graphics created for the various departments, from bathrooms to ballgowns, from cosmetics to colouring-books.
Styled by Steven Thomas, the designer of Big Biba itself, and with text by Alwyn W Turner,
author of The Biba Experience, this book evokes the glamour, humour and fantasy of the
store, the audacious style that could turn a shop girl into a Hollywood star.

Whether buying gem-set jewellery or loose stones, you will be
faced with a colourful array of beauty and value. With such a
wide choice - from amethyst to zircon which should you
choose? What is it worth, and how do you even know it is real?
All that glitters is not gold, as they say, and all that sparkles is
not diamond. Gemstones helps to answer these questions in
simple and easy to understand terms. The clear, uncomplicated
presentation makes this book a must for anyone interested in
gemstones, whether as an investment or simply as a hobby.
A key, a safety pin, a balloon, a propeller, a voltmeter - these
unexpected objects in art jewellery rewrite the world of the
Norwegian “jewellery engineer” Sigurd Bronger. He carries over his
fascination for machines and instruments in humorously constructed
jewellery pieces, and transforms natural materials and everyday
objects into meticulously executed, complex and ingenious
constructions. With works from the 1980s to the present day, this
book will carry you off into the world of Sigurd Bronger, one of the
most significant Norwegian jewellery artists today. Text in English,

Jewellery 1998-2010
Edited by Alba Cappellieri
Barbara Mass, Anna Schetelich & Wolfram Otto
Does jewellery have a specific definition? What expertise,
disciplines or knowledge are required to produce it? Is it art,
fashion or design? Is making it an industrial or a craft skill? The
ambiguity arises from jewellery’s ability to change what it
symbolises, its social value and how it is produced. For the first
time, this book analyses the complex nature of Italian jewellery,
considering its different components: from territory to design,
from production to the market, from distribution to training,
from the point-of-sale to communication, and the definition of
new scenarios and new materials. Text in English & Italian.
Petra Zimmerman is one of the most ambitious artists in
contemporary jewellery. She draws on past encounters with
costume jewellery from the previous century for her rings,
bracelets and brooches. Comprised of bright, colourful synthetic
forms, these objects receive a framework in which their artificial
appearance contrasts to the dusty splendour of the historic
costume jewellery. This book provides the first overview of
Zimmerman’s fascinating and exciting creative jewellery works
with sumptuous images and scholarly articles.

Suzanne Belperron (1900-1983) is one of the 20th century's greatest
jewellers. Amazingly, she never signed her work, considering it so
distinctive that it was instantly recognisable. She worked first for the

set up on her own. She opened a tiny shop on the Rue de Chateaudon
and began selling her new designs, which were totally in vogue with
modern taste and lusted after by a young and hip generation.

It seemed destined that no book would ever be devoted to her work
because it was thought that her archive was destroyed in a fire.
However, the discovery of that archive has made this book possible. It
has revealed many drawings for her jewellery as well as order books
containing a who's who of her customers. These ranged from royalty
like the Duchess of Windsor to writers like Colette, to famous stars
like Frank Sinatra. This beautiful book will tell her incredible story and
cement her reputation as a design genius.
In 2012 Sotheby's will hold a sale devoted to selling a large number of
stunning pieces of Belperron jewellery, many owned by famous clients.

Rörstrand Porcelain from Sweden
The appearance of the Rörstrand porcelain factory from Stockholm at the 1900 world
exhibition in Paris was brilliant: the world had never seen such expert handling of
porcelain mass - some in the form of wafer-thin petals - and an underglaze colour palette
with such subtle nuances. The critics were full of praise and the economic success was
soon to follow. With approximately 170 objects from a German private collection, this

Early Meissen Porcelain
The Wark Collection from The Cummer Museum of Art
Toys of the Avant-Garde
Ulrich Pietsch
José Lebrero Stals, Juan Bordes, and Carlos Pérez et al.
The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens in Jacksonville, Florida owns one of the finest
and most comprehensive Meissen collections in the world. Donated to the Museum by
Ralph H. and Constance I. Wark in 1965, it features nearly 700 pieces of Meissen
porcelain, including rare pieces from the earliest years of the royal factory, established in
1710. Author Ulrich Pietsch uses the fascinating history of the foundation of the Meissen
factory to set the background for his essay on Wark’s collection, and the surprising story
of how it survived the Second World War in a Hamburg cellar. The catalogue features
notable examples by the leading sculptors and painters of early Meissen production
including Johann Friedrich Böttger, Johann Joachim Kändler, and Johann Gregor Höroldt.
• The more than 300 objects featured include creations by Picasso,
Eames, Marcel Duchamp, Paul Klee and Joan Mirò among others
• Published to coincide with an exhibition at Picasso Museum, Spain
It is difficult to say when the first toys were invented but archaeology suggests the
need to play and to create objects to play with is an unchanging element over the
course of humanity. Toys and games reflect the social and cultural reality of each era.
The children’s toys, books, and furniture in this publication were created by the avantgarde artists of the first half of the twentieth century. It was a time of crises and
tensions, technological and scientific progress and also years of important advances in
psychology and the social sciences. For the first time, childhood was seen as a crucial
phase in the development of individuals and one requiring specific attention. The
result was new educational methods and an emphasis on the value of sensory and
cognitive stimulus. Imagination and creativity were welcomed and encouraged. Artists
of the avant-garde, proponents of spontaneous expression, embraced these ideas
and created art works especially for children - objects designed to be touched, and
used for play as well as well as looked at.

First published in 1923, this long-awaited edition of the
definitive reference work on the marine chronometer contains
additional photographs and many of author Rupert Gould’s

the chronometer’s history and the earliest attempts to measure

inventors.
This is the first book to cover all aspects of English watches
from every period. Watches represent a fascinating combination
of applied art and science and an outstanding contribution to
their history and development was made in England. By dividing
the watches into six periods, each with its own introduction, the
author has been able to provide an admirably clear and

Surviving the Melting Pot
Anne Odom
The Hillwood Museum’s Russian silver collection if the largest and most comprehensive
outside Russia. Russian Silver in America presents a dazzling visual survey of silver
production in Russia over more than 250 years and provides a proper cultural, political
and historical context for the development of Russian silver from the baroque styles of
the reigns of Peter and Elizabeth, through the move to Rococo and Neoclassicism,
revivalist styles under Alexander I and Nicholas I, 19th-century styles up to Fabergé, to
modernist production. Running throughout is the story of how, and why, so much Russian
silver found its way into American collections - much of it sold by the Soviet government
in the 1920s and 30s as being of no artistic value.

For ages silver ware has been the source of inspiraton for many
an artist. The trade reached an unprecedented level thanks to
religious silver ware. Unfortunately, orders dropped away in the
course of the twentieth-century. More and more studios had to
close their doors. Gradually, even the training left much to be
desired. Rob Thalen and his son Jaap want to again create
‘beauty’: silver objects, utensils, works of art that have long been
lost. Monumental creations, demanding old craftmanship as well
as the most advanced techniques. Based in Francorchamps,
Belgium, their designs are valued all over the world. Text in
English, Dutch, French and German.
Michael Glancy is widely recognised as a prominent innovator in the field of studio glass.
Glancy works with cold glass, which he sculpts through sandblasting and acid-cutting, and
then coats with electroformed copper, silver or gold. Elegant and exceptional in their
quality and beauty, Michael Glancy’s sculptures reveal the artist’s pursuit for perfection.
Glancy’s own very specific mode of presentation - that of a base of sheet glass which
shadows or connects to the standing vessel - has become his signature style. It is as if the
two-dimensional world of the sheet of glass has developed and warped itself into a threedimensional object. Michael Glancy’s work is represented in numerous international
museums and collections. Since 1982 he has taught and worked at the Rhode Island
School of Design.

Masterpieces of British Design

• Each featured design is not only beautifully illustrated
but also accompanied by authoritative descriptive
information and an in-depth explanatory text
The Golden Age of English Glass features 150 objects from the
collection of John H. Bryan, ranging in date from c.1650-1809.
These enable a full and detailed discussion of the history of English
glassmaking during its critical period of innovation (c.1650-1675)
and its world triumph (c.1700-1775), including discussions of
crystal table glass, ‘black’ glass bottles, window glass, mirrors and
lighting (glass candle-sticks and chandeliers). In spite of the fact
that these pieces are among the most important examples of
English glass known (the collection includes, for instance, twentyfive drinking glasses made between about 1690 and 1720, when
English table glass is widely regarded as being among the most
refined and perfect expression of the glass-makers’ art anywhere in
the world), few have ever been published. The scholarly text
brings together the latest information in a dynamic area of
research. Essays accompanying catalogue discussions of individual
glasses place them in their wider historical and technical settings.
The book is illustrated with some 215 colour photographs of the
objects in the collection (including groups and details), some
seventy-five comparative objects from other collections and fiftyfive period prints, paintings, drawings and other documents that
convey the historic context of their use and also document
processes of manufacture and decoration.

From the visually seductive E-Type Jaguar to Giles Gilbert Scott’s
iconic red telephone boxes, British design is distinguished by a
combination of casual elegance with practical functionality, with
often a touch of British eccentricity thrown in for good
measure. Masterpieces of British Design comprehensively surveys
one hundred landmark designs spanning a period of 250 years from Industrial Revolution period Coalbrookdale ironwork to
William Mitchell’s Spitfire to the latest designs by a roster of
today’s most celebrated designers, including Ross Lovegrove,
Jasper Morrison and Ron Arad. Each featured design is not only
beautifully illustrated but also accompanied by authoratative
descriptive information and an in-depth explanatory text. From
Pugin and Morris to Lovegrove and Morrison, this sumptuously
illustrated book reveals the inherent characteristics of British
design, while celebrating the remarkable influence of its long and
illustrious output on the course of design history. Unlike their
continental counterparts, British designers never took onboard
the hard-edged Modernism of the Bauhaus but instead created
(and still create) modern designs with a soft-edged
sophistication that reflects an engaging and understated
refinement… British design at its very best!
Charlotte and Peter Fiell are leading authorities on 20th and

Eames on Design
The Collected Words
Edited by Daniel Ostroff
Introduction by Charlotte & Peter Fiell
Charles and Ray Eames literally shaped Modern design during the
postwar years.Yet despite worldwide recognition and their enduring
legacy, until now there has never been a publication that focuses on their
design philosophy. Prolific furniture designers, filmmakers and exhibition
designers, the Eameses were also hugely influential communicators. For
the first time ever, Eames on Design brings together their collected words
from magazine articles, television interviews, film scripts, personal letters
and lectures. A huge undertaking, this project has involved painstakingly
sifting through vast quantities of archival material held by the Eames family,
the Eames Office and Herman Miller Inc. as well as the extensive
collections of the Library of Congress and Vitra Design Museum - the
resulting texts not only provide a clear understanding of the Eameses’
design thinking but also give us a unique insight into them as people.
Way of the Sign
This book explores the use of sign systems within institutions across the globe and
discusses the needs and considerations behind each project. It features projects from Asia,
the USA, Africa, Europe and the UK.The signs featured have been designed for a variety of
institutions, such as hospitals, airports, subways, art gallerys, shopping malls and college
campuses.

The Eighties was a special time for the creative people; it was
made up of absolute visual liberty with no fear of making
mistakes, of the excessive or of Kitsch. The market wanted evernew ideas and the search for not-yet-discovered things. New
fonts were beginning to be used; textures had invaded the
market. With a new texture the same old, tired product lived
again and became appetising. The DVD includes 130 high

masters and younger talents. It includes posters selected by a committee comprising the two
masters of contemporary graphic design Kazumasa Nagai and Shin Matsunaga, who also

What was once generically called “graphics” and has more recently been catalogued under
the umbrella of visual communications is today considered an expression of contemporary
culture closely interwoven with a number of different fields and disciplines. A phenomenon
that when viewed in close-up reveals alternative ways of interpreting the world, work,
relationships, and hints at educational models that transcend professions and individual
projects, addressing society as a whole.Yet despite this richness the world of graphic design
remains largely undiscovered and unstudied, especially beyond the narrow confines of the
profession itself. Graphic Design Worlds investigates the works and history of the some of
the international contemporary scene’s most interesting graphic designers as a prism
offering a multifaceted glimpse of the fields they work in, the interlocking networks behind
the scenes and the vital links in today’s world.
Logo Talks
A logo is not only meant to represent a company’s brand or a corporate identity and foster
its immediate customer recognition, but also to be a piece of laudable art work, worthy of
pondering over. Logo design, being one of the most difficult areas of graphic design to perfect, is
being increasingly focused upon by both professionals and laymen. From the prospect of the
development of the logo, now we can see that visual simplicity is no longer the sole destination
of logo design; insightful designers today delve into the depth of logos’ conceptual and
connotative meanings as well as its creative details in form. This book showcases stunning
logo designs from a broad spectrum of contemporary designers in recent years. It provides
insight into the trends and development of logo design, by presenting designers’ varied use of
different elements and styles, including fonts, graphics and ambigrams, etc. This book
emphasises the innovation and the flexibility used in logo design.

Since 1973, Benetti has been producing yachts upwards of 85 feet in length, all over the
world. Its boats have made history – like the famous and incredibly costly Nabila, ordered
by the Arabian financier Adnan Khashoggi; a businessman known for his wealth and
extravagant lifestyle, who commissioned it to be built in the late 1970s.The Nabila became
the symbol of extreme luxury, to such an extent that it was used in the James Bond film
Never Say Never Again.Today, the combination of skill and experience of a traditional
shipyard, together with technological innovation on the leading edge, have made Benettti a
world leader in the sphere of yacht building. The book tells the story of one of the world’s
largest and most hi-tech shipyards, able to face up to the challenges of the future and offer
its customers yachts of supreme quality.

successful for the Dutch manufacturer Pastoe.Twenty-five years
later, its compositional scope is still limitless; from a threedimensional relief design to a graphical lattice of lines and
surfaces, from a series of sideboards to an architectural
landscape of volumes. The book Vision: Space for Imagination tells

Contemporary Apartments
Kitchens
Wim Pauwels
Wim Pauwels
The transformation and interior design of apartments calls for a
special approach. Apartments are designed for city lifestyles and
their specifications may be more restrictive than for houses,
often having less available space and a lack of natural light. They
also have to offer a refuge from the aggressive world outside,
with its noise and pollution. All of these factors combine to
make city apartments a real design challenge and an appealing
exercise in interior design: improving the circulation between
the various living spaces, adapting the layout to modern
lifestyles, creating views through the home and making the best
possible use of the available space.
The kitchen has undergone a metamorphosis in recent years,
becoming a new living space. Kitchens of the new generation
take pride of place in the home, often forcing the dining room
or living room to surrender a few square metres. Symbolising
both hospitality and lifestyle, the kitchen often serves a number
of purposes: it is a practical space that is both aesthetically
pleasing and multifunctional. As the perfect space in which to
come together and share stories, the kitchen has become a
reception room for friends and family.
Alexandra Druesne, the interior style writer of the Beta-Plus Home Series, now showcases
the 500 best reports in 15 years of Beta-Plus reports on contemporary interiors. A very

Wellness at Home
Wood at Home
Wim Pauwels
Wim Pauwels
Explores new trends in wellness at home by famous interior
designers. Includes beautifully illustrated spas, hammams and
private swimming pools.
Construction with wood has gained a solid reputation and is
seen as a valid alternative to traditional building with bricks.
Wood also offers many advantages: processing it is both
energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, the construction
time is short, and it is a very durable material. Many wooden
constructions have withstood the test of time over hundreds of
years. The most important reason for selecting wood, though, is
the pleasant atmosphere enjoyed by owners of wooden
houses. This also applies when wood is used as an essential
element of an interior: floors, panelling and fitted cabinetwork
create a welcoming feeling of warmth and cosiness in a home.

Handmade Tailor-Made
Mark Kingsford in association with Vonder
According to the Van Dale dictionary of the Dutch language, a ‘vonder’ is a plank bridge
or a wooden walkway. The name is a reference to what was once a marshy landscape
where the farms were in complete harmony with the environment. The concept of the
“house by the water”, a house in its natural surroundings, is the basis for Vonder’s
philosophy of design and business. Vonder makes furniture that is technically perfect, but
also timeless. If you want to create something truly extraordinary, craftsmanship alone will
not do; something extra is needed - a philosophy or a concept that embraces everything
you create and produce. Each project undertaken by Vonder is designed specifically to fit
its surroundings. Vonder works together with some of the best-known and mostrespected designers, such as Kate Hume, Marcel Wolterinck and Piet Hein Eek.

Jean-Loup Daraux, Photographs by Mario Ciampi
This beautifully illustrated book, a companion volume to the best-selling En passant par la
demeure (published by Verba Volant in 2005), presents three new extraordinary residences
decorated by noted French interior designer Jean-Loup Daraux. Located in the south of
France, these homes showcase the designer’s ability to create rich compositions with a
combination of ageless furniture, antiques, contemporary artwork, and imaginative
finishings that synthesise tradition and innovation. All the spaces in By the Light of the Sea
resonate with the spirit the Mediterranean and are unmistakably French by design. The
elegance of a simple French farmhouse, the chic of a converted warehouse, and the allure
of a seaside home are all captured in stunning photographs by Mario Ciampi. Anecdotal
essays by Daraux provide insight into the balanced blend of stylistic influences that make
each of the homes so sophisticated and enchanting.

Visions + Strategies for Repositioning Distressed
Text by Robert Sharoff Photographs by William Zbaren
Ronald Altoon
American City: St. Louis Architecture is the first large-format book
on the city’s architecture since the 1920s and includes over 100
new colour photos and text for 50 of the city’s most important
structures. These range from such 19th Century masterpieces
as Louis Sullivan’s Wainwright Building and Theodore Link’s
Union Station to Eero Saarinen’s Gateway Arch and Maya Lin’s
recently completed Ellen Clark Hope Plaza. Finally, an
introductory essay provides biographical and historical
information on the city’s rich architectural heritage in an
accessible, non-academic style geared to average readers.
With over 30 years’ experience renowned architect Ronald
Altoon understands the extraordinary investment potential
distressed retail assets offer, particularly in the current economic
climate. Retail Rescue is both a canny investment guide and a
pictorial showcase of the transformative powers of architecture.
In a series of 21 comprehensive case studies, in addition to
numerous other examples of his work, Altoon describes the
processes, pitfalls and potential of the varying levels of
distressed retail asset repositioning, accompanied by site plans

Boston & Beyond
The Chicago Central Area DeCarbonization Plan
CBT Architects
Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill
CBT Architects Foreword by Michael Dukakis
Chicago has long been a world leader in innovations of all kinds,
and its response to the need for drastic environmental action to
combat climate change is no exception. In 2008, Chicago developed
the Chicago Climate Action Plan (CCAP) to begin to address these
issues. This book is an examination and exploration of the issues
that the CCAP deals with and how they may be implemented,
focusing on the Chicago Loop area. It also examines the 2030
Challenge, which has an aggressive goal of 80 percent reduction in
carbon emissions by 2030 for new and renovated buildings.
In more than 40 years of practice, CBT Architects has played an
important role in a broad range of projects in diverse settings.
This initial volume of the firm’s work showcases projects from
Boston and Beyond. The firm’s local and international design
efforts focus on the creation and rejuvenation of downtown
areas, waterfronts, campuses, and neighbourhoods. The firm’s
work centres on the belief that for a community to come to life
and continue to thrive it must support the lifestyles and
activities of the people who live, work, and play there.

Sustainable Homes
Edited by Mark Cleary
Necessity is the mother of invention, and the global necessity of
facing the challenges of Climate Change has unleashed the
inventive powers of architects around the world, many of whom
are tackling the problem in original and highly creative ways. And
yet, as the projects contained in this volume attest, sustainable
design doesn’t necessarily preclude style and comfort, or even a
little bit of luxury. With lush full-colour photography, detailed floor
and site plans, and informative descriptions of each house’s
sustainable design elements, Sustainable Homes takes the reader on
a round-the-world journey, traversing a range of climates, to see
how today’s architects are making the most of traditional and
modern design principles and technologies to create more energy
efficient houses. From the Light House in the UK, that country’s
first carbon-zero house, to the Palmyra House in India, a model in
using local sustainable materials, to the sculptural works of art
formed from the ecological-friendly technique of whole tree
architecture, the houses in Sustainable Homes will captivate you
with their beauty and invention, and inspire you with their ideas.

...but, where is Bari?
Ugly
A Journey in contemporary art.The Bonomo Gallery since 1971
The Aesthetics of Everything
Stephen Bayley
“but, where is Bari?”That question is like a perpetual joke hovering over the gallery. The
American artists whom in the beginning I met and asked to show in Bari became carried
away with enthusiasm for the project, planned their show, but then invariably asked: “but,
where is Bari?”.That is how someone had the bright idea to use it for an advertisement in
the American review Avalanche, directed by Willoughby Sharp. It was a brilliant invention
that amused everyone, including Bari! Text in English & Italian.
“No object is so beautiful that, under certain conditions, it will not look ugly”
Oscar Wilde
What is ugly? One of the leading cultural commentators of our times,
Stephen Bayley, takes us on a journey of discovery by skilfully weaving
centuries of art and design history into a discourse on the nature of
beauty… and its polar opposite, ugly. Is ugliness only skin-deep, or can
something that is outwardly beautiful - a B52 bomber or a Colt.45 also be ugly, if its function is to kill or to maim? What was “Degenerate
Art” and why was it deemed such? Why on earth is there a contest for
“The Ugliest Dog in the World”? If there was no ugly in the world,
would there be any beauty? Stephen Bayley in his engaging and at times
tongue-in-cheek style answers these questions to reveal… well you just
need to read this beautifully illustrated book to find out the ugly truth!

works all have as points of reference Buddhist spirituality and the rituals of Chinese
tradition. It highlights the versatility of Zhang Huan, starting with his performances in the
early 1990s up to his most recent works, where he uses the ash from incense burnt in the
temples and places of prayer in and around Shanghai. The works of Zhang Huan offer a
new and fresh look at contemporary China and the impact on its most ancient traditions.
He gives another reading to these traditions in light of the unstoppable economic
development and various challenges of modern day China. Text in English & Italian.
Rirkrit Tiravanija
Cook Book
This book has been published in association with the unique
exhibition of Adam Fuss in Fundación Mapfre, Madrid. The
exhibition comprises approximately fifty images by Adam Fuss,
dating from 1992 to the present. Adam Fuss makes pictures of
unrivaled beauty and mystery with traditional and historical
photographic techniques. His decision to use the processes for
making daguerreotypes, platinum prints or photograms, for
example, is not a statement against technology nor has it
evolved from romantic notions. He has instead explored the
best means to create the images that he has imagined. The
results are timeless pictures; images which are a culmination of
his enduring passions. They are pictures from his soul.
Photography by Antoinette Aurell
Born in Buenos Aires in 1961, contemporary artist Rirkrit
Tiravanija resides in New York, Berlin and Chiang Mai,Thailand.
His installations often take the form of stages or rooms for
sharing meals, cooking, reading or playing music; architecture or
structures for living and socialising are a core element in his
work. This book contains 23 recipes, previously performed in
museums and galleries throughout the world. All were cooked
once more in his Chiang Mai kitchen and documented in the
photographs by Antoinette Aurell.

Dictionary of Living Irish Artists
Women in Charge
Robert O’Byrne
Contemporary Inuit Artists
The diverse and rich artistic forms of the Mughal Empire have been of international
inspiration. While relations between the Mughal world and other European powers have
been studied many times, this is the first book to explore the mutual influence on art, taste
and style between the Portuguese and Mughal empires. Goa and the Great Mughal focuses
on the period from the 1570's, the moment of the first direct contact between the
Portuguese and the Mughal Empire, to the first half of the 18th century, when the last
direct diplomatic relations took place. This association lasting over two hundred years was
expressed in various fields: in trade, politics, diplomacy, religion, art and culture. The ten
essays written for this book by an international team of experts highlight different facets of
this relationship and are illustrated by a wealth of spectacular Mughal miniatures, European
paintings and other contemporary objects.
Elvira Stefania Tiberini
The Dictionary of Living Irish Artists features high-quality, full-colour
images of work by 200 Irish artists alongside biographical details
and information on exhibitions and awards. The artists included
in the book are living and working today, mainly in Ireland

O’Byrne, leading Irish arts commentator, The Dictionary of Living
Irish Artists will be the essential reference work for
contemporary Irish art. It will be a must-have for collectors,
dealers and anyone with an interest in Irish art. It provides art
collectors throughout the world with an attractive introduction

Richard Vine, Christopher Gaillard et al.
New York-based painter William Steiger’s focus is on
fundamental representation of the American landscape. His
subjects are industrial and recognisable - grain towers, cable
cars, trains, and amusement park attractions. His graphic,
distinctly schematised work is grounded in the traditions of
classic American landscape painting and the machine-age
Precisionism of figures like Charles Sheeler and Charles
Demuth. Steiger’s works have been shown around the world
and are in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan
Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and The
Museum of Modern Art, New York.
This book traces the life and work of the great German painter
Gerhard Richter, born in Dresden in 1932, and charts the path
he has traced in contemporary art, with particular reference to
image processing and its limits or frontiers. The dissolution of
the image, the theme of twelve paintings by Richter, was also
the subject of the works and studies by seven other artists:
Anthony Gormley, Roger Hiorns, Marc Breslin, Scott Short, Xie

different techniques to express their reflections on the present

Arte Povera

Storia e storie
The Reality of the Lowest Order
Edited by Germano Celant
Luc Tuymans, Alison Gas,
with a contribution by Takashi Murakami
A collection of theoretical texts on the art of the movement
and the styles of the individual artists, concentrating as much on
the movement’s contingent side as on its contradictory way of
creating art. Edited by Germano Celant, the book is a
comprehensive update on his reflections in 1985 in a book
entitled Arte Povera, Stories and Protagonists. This book contains a
facsimile of the original, providing a source of reference and an
opportunity to take a new look at Arte Povera.
In this book, Luc Tuymans translates his fascination with Central
Europe’s eventful history into a highly personal exhibition. He has
selected the works of artists from East and Central Europe,
dating from World War II until the present day. This book is the
official catalogue for the exhibition A Vision of Central Europe
that will be held at the concert hall in Bruges.

The horse was a constant reference point in the work of Picasso. He experienced the last
moments of the civilisation of the horse in the 20th century and while the presence of the
horse is barely found in his earliest works it becomes ever more present as his career
progresses. Picasso’s impressions of the horse from visiting the bullfights at La Malagueta as
a ten-year old boy through his career that took him to Paris, Barcelona, Malaga and beyond
are brought together into more than 50 works of art, that for the first time tell a story of a
world now almost forgotten where the horse was part of daily life. Picasso liked all horses
without exception and as he depicted them in his work they were all appealing, whether
circus horses, children’s toys, idealised classical horses, race horses or funeral horses. As
Dominique Dupuis-Labbé writes, “aside from works devoted to the women he loved,
Picasso never better celebrated the fusion of emotion and creation than when he focused
on the subject of the horse.”
The first major survey of the artist’s work, this new volume
features 47 artworks that trace his career from Pond’s Edge
(1986) to The Reef (2009). Accompanying a major exhibition at
the Smithsonian American Art Museum, this vividly illustrated
volume highlights the artist’s compelling mix of intensely
coloured realism, scientific detail, and environmental concerns.
The result is a stunning body of work.

Frances Fowle
Alexander Reid was one of the most influential art dealers of his time. A close friend of
Whistler and the Van Gogh brothers, he was the first British dealer to take a serious
interest in Impressionist art. He was also a contemporary of the Glasgow Boys and
supported emerging artists such as Henry, Hornel and Crawhall as well as the Scottish
Colourists. His clients were rich Scottish merchants and industrialists who made their
fortunes on the back of Scotland’s rapid economic development, and whom he persuaded
to buy Impressionism well in advance of their English contemporaries. In this first biography
devoted to an unsung hero of the British art world, Frances Fowle traces the history of
Reid’s Gallery against the backdrop of a fascinating period of economic boom and bust.
Nature According to De Chirico
Edited by Achille Bonito Oliva
A complete volume dedicated to the output of a great 20th
century Italian artist, Leonor Fini (1907-1996), a friend of the
Surrealists, close to the Dada movement, fascinated by the
theatre, but always herself, a woman and a star of enormous
dynamism. Paul Eluard dedicated poems to her, she was
photographed by Cartier-Bresson and Man Ray, she was a painter,
a scriptwriter, costume designer and illustrator and the person
responsible for various ups and downs in Italian art-history
criticism circles. Leonor Fini will do justice not only to her career
as an artist and star but also her paintings, which are full of her
vivacious spirit, and her extraordinary personality that Max Ernst
defined as the “Italian fury in Paris”. Text in English & Italian.
Born in Volos, at the heart of classical Greece, and educated in
Nietzsche’s “philosophical” Munich, Giorgio de Chirico then
moved to avant-garde Paris where his art influenced the
emerging Surrealist generation. He was first noticed by Pablo
Picasso and Guillaume Apollinaire, when he exhibited in 1913 at
the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. He then met Brancusi,
Braque, Jacob, Soffici, Léger and Derain. In 1928 he held his first
one-man exhibition in New York and shortly afterwards
exhibited in London. Indeed, in those years, as well as painting,
he dedicated himself to writing and also to stage designing for
theatrical shows and ballets.

Paintings and Sculptures 1945-2001
Lydia Harambourg
This is a beautifully illustrated publication which depicts the work of Henry Moore and his
life in rural Hertfordshire. Moore moved to Perry Green with his wife Irina in 1940 and
he lived there until his death in 1986. This guide provides a succinct biography of this
famous artist’s life, describes his working methods and shows the Moores’ former home
and studios, which can still be viewed in their original condition today. A large collection of
Moore’s work remains at The Henry Moore Foundation in Perry Green, including
sculptures, drawings, graphics, tapestries and textiles. This is a unique appraisal of one of
Britain’s most internationally renowned artists, who remains as popular today as ever.
David Madden, John T. Spike, Nicholas Spike
This lavishly illustrated catalogue documents the chronology,
series, provenance, publications and exhibitions of Anuszkiewicz’s
more than 1,000 paintings and sculptures in museums and private
collections. Prepared in collaboration with Richard and Sally
Anuszkiewicz and using the artist’s personal archive, this
comprehensive book is a fundamental resource on this major
artistic personality and on post-war geometric abstraction in
general.
Robert Helman is one of the XXth century’s major artists.
Based in Montparnasse from 1946, he shared in the adventure
of the New School of Paris without allowing himself to be
trapped by any pictorial trend. Painted with bold gestures and a
bright palette, his Suns, Genesis, Roots, Germinations,Trees and
High Glides have produced a vast personal cosmogony. Robert
Helman has thus managed to communicate his vital energy
through powerful and lyrical work, by expressing, in harmony
with Nature, the intimate link between his inner personal vision
and his artistic achievement.

Isaak Levitan
Lyrical Landscape
Averil King
Isaak Levitan (1860-1900) was born into a poor Jewish family in Lithuania and was able to
enrol at the Moscow School of Painting in 1873. He made rapid progress, the merchant
collector Pavel Tretyakov buying one of his paintings when he was only nineteen. Levitan
travelled extensively in Europe, visiting Berlin, Paris, the Riviera, Italy, Switzerland, Munich
and Vienna. He was thus, unlike many of his contemporaries, well aware of artistic trends
in the west. This revised edition of the author’s Isaak Levitan Lyrical Landscape (2004 and
2006), also focuses on Levitan’s still lifes, portraits and cityscapes. It explores the creative
thinking behind some of his works and draws parallels with the landscapes of Monet, who,
while Levitan painted on the shores of the Volga, lived and worked near the river Seine.

whose subject was the reconstruction of the motivation of Matisse’s
journey to Spain, with stages in Madrid, Seville, Cordoba, Granada,Toledo
and Barcelona, as well as the influence of the experience of this journey in
his work. The result of the studies will be shown in the exhibition Matisse
and The Alhambra. The exhibition is also supported by the family of Matisse,
especially by Claude and Barbara Duthuit, and by the establishment of a
Scientific Committee with some of the most outstanding experts in Henri
Matisse’s work, such as Pierre Schnieder, Remi Labrusse and Isabel MonodFontaine, and others. In parallel to the exhibition, two series of conferences
will take place in Madrid (Caixa Forum) and Granada (Palace of Charles V),
with the participation of the most important pundits in Matisse’s work.
Matisse and the Alhambra 1910-2010, with a division into five sections
(Matisse and the Alhambra, Matisse and Morocco, Nice,The Odalisques and
Last Varitions) is a contribution to the knowledge of Matisse’s life and work
in his last years. Forty internationally renowned institutions such as The
Hermitage Museum, MoMA in New York,The Metropolitan Museum, the
Louvre,The Victoria and Albert Museum and the Pushkin Museum in
Moscow, and private collectors, such as the Baroness Thyssen-Bornemisza
and Claude and Barbara Duthuit, heirs of the French painter, give their

Apart from the Stour Valley on the borders of Suffolk and Essex, where he grew up,
Constable made more paintings and drawings in and around Salisbury than in any other
part of England. He was a regular visitor for nearly twenty years, staying in the Close, first as
guest of the bishop, then with his nephew, Archdeacon John Fisher. Paintings and drawings
of Salisbury figure in every exhibition of Constable’s art, but they have never been
considered in isolation. This new study examines every aspect of Constable’s connections
with Salisbury, casting new light not only on the places and people, but on his intriguing
interpretations of such familiar monuments as Salisbury Cathedral, Old Sarum and
Stonehenge. Published to accompany the exhibition Constable and Salisbury, The Soul of
Landscape at the Museum of Salisbury and South Wiltshire, situated within Salisbury
Cathedral Close, it promotes a fresh understanding of Constable’s art.
Jonathan Bober, Ken Grant, and Cheryl Snay
This volume is concerned with images and discourses of the
artist in the Netherlands from the late 15th century to the mid
17th century, when the relationship between a community of
craftsmen and elite individuals, between consciousness of a
native tradition and membership of international humanist
society, were being actively negotiated. Contributions in which
self-portraits, images of the studio and art literature are related
to the practices, behavior and economic lives of a range of
practitioners, provide new insights into the artist not only as a
producer but a figure produced by his work.
This title is the first to publish the Blanton Museum’s over 75
works in a variety of media, ranging in date from the 16th
through the 19th centuries. Preliminary sketches, fully developed
compositional studies, figure studies and finished drawings show
the breadth of the medium. The collection has a strong series
of Italianate examples as well - many never before published from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when the
Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture was evolving into
one of the dominant cultural and political institutions in Europe.

Patricia Phagan. Essays by Vic Gatrell & Amelia Rauser
Accompanying the first major exhibition of Thomas Rowlandson’s work in North America
for some 20 years, this volume reflects the growing emphasis on the social and political
context of the satirical watercolours, drawings and prints of the 18th and 19th century.
This book explores Rowlandson’s unique perspective on Georgian society, and opens up
the whole subject of Georgian leisure and social life and the crossing of class boundaries.
An introduction by Patricia Phagan describes Rowlandson’s position within a hierarchical
society. Illustrated essays by Vic Gatrell and Amelia Rauser examine Rowlandson’s view of
social life and leisure in London and his political satires. Over 70 of Rowlandson’s original
watercolours and drawings, as well as prints and illustrated books drawn from the Frances
Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College as well as from the Metropolitan Museum of
Art,Yale Center for British Art, Lewis Walpole Library, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript
Library, and Vassar College Libraries, Archives and Special Collections are presented.
In Italian Public Collections III: Piedmont
This volume is dedicated to the almost 1000 works in Piedmont
and Valle d’Aosta. Initiated in 1998 and divided by Italian
regions, the series, which is the result of a vast research project
led by the Dutch Institute for Art History in Florence, this is a
great editorial feat, one that has brought outstanding works of
art as well as lesser ones to the attention of the art specialist as
well as to the wider public, bringing to light a huge amount of
material scattered in collections all over Italy.

Lucien Pissarro in England
Bronzino
The Eragny Press 1895-1914
Painter and Poet at the Court of the Medici
Victor Benjamin, Colin Harrison & Jon Whiteley
Edited by Carlo Falciani and Antonio Natali
This catalogue looks at the origins and achievements of a unique private press in England
founded by Lucien Pissarro (1863-1944), eldest son of Camille, the leading Impressionist.
With introductory essays describing the history of the Press (1895-1914), its aesthetic aims,
the texts themselves and the character of Lucien Pissarro himself, this comprehensive
volume sets the press within the context of the private press movement and its key
characters. The Pissarro Archive in the Ashmolean Museum is the largest single resource
for the study of Impressionism in the world. It was presented to the Museum by the family
of Camille Pissarro’s eldest son, and now numbers several thousand items. Among the most
important are a dozen oil paintings by Camille, covering the whole range of his output, as
well as several hundred drawings and an important group of prints by the artist, often
described as the ‘father of Impressionism’.
This catalogue traces the career of Agnolo di Cosimo known as Bronzino, a protagonist of
sixteenth-century Florentine culture. It charts his life from his apprenticeship in the
workshop of Jacopo da Pontormo and sojourn in the Marche region to his career as official
artist (and portraitist) of the Medici court and painter of sacred works. Many works by
Bronzino and his contemporaries (Benvenuto Cellini, Niccolò Tribolo, Baccio Bandinelli,
Pierino da Vinci, Alessandro Allori) reveal the close link between the arts: painting and
sculpture, but also poetry, demonstrating the multifaceted personality of the artist, author of
lofty sonnets in the style of Petrarch and of burlesque poems. Published to accompany an
exhibition at the Palazzo Strozzi, Florence, 24th September 2010 - 23rd January 2011.

Passion in Venice
Baccio Bandinelli
Crivelli to Tintoretto and Veronese:The Man of Sorrows in Venetian Art
Dessins Italiens du Musée du Louvre
William Barcham, Catherine Puglisi and Xavier Seubert
Françoise Viatte
Passion in Venice: Crivelli to Tintoretto and Veronese: The Man of Sorrows in Venetian Art features
works by some of the greatest names in Venetian painting including Veronese,Tintoretto,
Crivelli, Giambono and the Bassano family. It creates a new and illuminating context for the
artistic scene in Venice, examining the rich visual tradition of Christ as the Man of Sorrows
which flourished over three centuries across all artistic media, outstripping other western
European schools in terms of output and the number of artists committed to the subject.
Catherine Puglisi and William Barcham explore the origins of the image of Christ as Man of
Sorrows and its emergence as a distinct and central devotional image in the religious life of
Venice from about 1300. Xavier Seubert focuses on the appeal of the Man of Sorrows as
an image expressing pity and anguish, but also offering hope for deliverance and
redemption.
Baccio Bandinelli (Florence, 1493-1560) was one of the sculptors that worked for the
house of Medici during the first half of the XVI century. A pupil of Giovan Francesco
Rustici, he was strongly influenced by Michelangelo. One of his main works, Hercules and
Cacus, is visible in the Piazza della Signoria and seen by millions of tourists each year. He
also worked in Rome where he had been called by pope Clement VII. But, while his talent
for sculpture was put in doubt by critics and rivals (Benvenuto Cellini, for instance),
Bandinelli’s extraordinary drawing skills were universally appreciated - Vasari declared him
“unrivalled” in this domain. Over two hundred drawings held in the Louvre are analysed in
this scholarly publication: they include autograph drawings, those by his workshop and
those rejected.

Illuminating Fashion
Dress in the Art of Medieval France and the Netherlands, 1325-1515
Anne van Buren, edited by Roger S. Wieck
Illuminating Fashion: Dress in the Art of Medieval France and the Netherlands, 1325-1515
focuses on the use of dress and costume in the art of France and the Netherlands during
the later medieval period. It examines the use of emblems and imagery, surviving visual
records of dress and costume, the use of medieval images depicting dress and costume and
how such images can be used in studying the history of fashion, dating a work of art, or
interpreting a medieval picture. At the heart of the work is the album, A Pictorial History of
Fashion from 1325 to 1515, featuring over 280 colour illustrations taken from tapestries,
illuminated manuscripts and illustrated texts from France, Holland and Burgundy. This is
followed by an extensive, annotated glossary. A richly illustrated volume that has special
interest for fashion and art historians, it throws new light on later medieval society
generally. Exhibition opens at the Morgan Library & Museum on June 3rd, 2011.

master Lucas Cranach, and a critical analysis of Lucas Cranach’s
works by important international experts
The exhibition Lucas Cranach: L’Altro Rinascimento will be showing
at the Galleria Borghese, Rome from October 2010 to January 2011
Lucas Cranach: A Different Renaissance provides a new critical approach to the
works of German Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach The Elder, and compares his
work with that of Italian Renaissance artists such as Bartolomeo Veneto, Francesco
Francia, Perugino, Lorenzo Lotto, and Titian. This book provides a new critical
approach of his works, thanks to the contributions of Berthold Hinz, Karin Kolb,
Andrew Martin, Martin Warnke and Heiner Borggrefe.
There are numerous publications about Renaissance art in Florence, but books written
about this subject during this era are exceptionally rare. Francesco Albertini’s Memorial of
many statues and paintings in the famous city of Florence of 1510 should therefore be
treasured. This is the first guidebook of the city and was published only a few years after
the inauguration of Michelangelo’s David at Piazza della Signoria and Leonardo da Vinci’s
work on the Battle of Anghiari in Palazzo Vecchio. Albertini’s Memorial is also one of the
earliest and therefore most interesting sources about sculpture and painting in the city. This
annotated and illustrated edition of Albertini’s guidebook invites the reader to relive
Florence and its artistic monuments during one if its most exciting periods.

Ruth Artmonsky and Brian Webb
Peyton Skipwith and Brian Webb
F.H.K Henrion was one of a distinguished group of graphic
designers - refugees from Europe just prior to World War II,
who brought cutting-edge continental design to the rather
parochial English scene. He quickly made his mark as a poster
designer for the Ministry of Information, and, parallel to this,
began to build up a career in exhibition design, culminating in
two highly original pavilions for the Festival of Britain. However,
Henrion is best remembered for his evangelical work in corporate
identity design whereby he raised the status of the graphic
designer to boardroom significance. He established the authority
of the profession as total re-branders of organisations, from
logo, through retail outlets and vehicles, to stationery and labels.
Claud Lovat Fraser is one of the great unsung heroes of 20thcentury British design. During his short life of just 31 years, he
achieved an astonishing amount of work as draughtsman,
watercolourist, caricaturist, publisher, illustrator, designer of stagesets, toys and fabrics: he also designed silks for Liberty’s,
advertising material for Eno’s, Gurr Johns and Atkinson’s, and
book-jackets for Heinemann and Nelson, among others. His
inimitable style and psychedelic palette became the hallmark of
both the Curwen Press and the Poetry Bookshop, but he is best
remembered today, by those who are aware of him at all, for his
poster, costume and set-designs for Nigel Playfair’s 1920 production
of The Beggar’s Opera at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith.

My buildings are paper, like my writings, and both will blow away in ten years after I am
dead.’ Horace Walpole died in 1790 yet remarkably Strawberry Hill is still standing over
200 years later. During the latter part of the 18th century, Horace Walpole, son of
England’s first Prime Minister, transformed a modest house into his own ‘little Gothic
castle,’ creating a tourist attraction, which was as popular in his day as it is in ours. Walpole
was a compulsive collector and filled the house with a pioneering collection of antiques
and curios. The house and gardens have recently undergone a multimillion-pound
restoration project to return Walpole’s Gothic vision to its original splendour.

Gloucester Cathedral is an extraordinary building on which the great events in the history
of England and the Christian religion have left their indelible marks. Kings and queens have
worshipped here. One king was crowned here; another is buried here. Great musicians
have made music and composed music here. Stonemasons and architects have built or
changed or restored the building through the centuries. Abbots, bishops and deans have
had new ideas and made great changes. Religious strife, civil war and great events have all
left their mark. Many great men and women are remembered here in wood and stone and
glass. For centuries ordinary people have also come - and still do come - as worshippers,
pilgrims and visitors. This beautifully illustrated book tells this story of Gloucester Cathedral.

A Noble Thing
The National Trust and its Benefactors from 1940
to the Present Day
Merlin Waterson
During the twentieth century there was an unprecedented and largely
unforeseen transfer of property in Britain from private ownership into
the hands of a single charitable institution, the National Trust. In 1945
the Trust owned 112,000 acres and had a membership of 7,850. Fifty
years later, when celebrating its centenary, it had a membership of 2
million and the area of land it owned had increased more than fivefold.
Only relatively recently has the significance of this transfer begun to
attract the serious interest of political and social historians. The National
Trust and its donors have tended to be diffident about their generosity.
The reasons for such generosity prove to be as varied as they are
surprising and illuminating. Merlin Waterson’s new book, concentrating
on the period since 1940, and accompanied throughout by rare and
unusual illustrations, sheds new light on the motives of some of the

The East India Company grew from an Elizabethan trading venture to control half of global
trade, leading directly to the British Raj in India and establishing British commercial and
imperial interests in China and South East Asia. Monsoon Traders tells the story of the
Company over three centuries, covering its origins, the maritime experience, encounters
with indigenous peoples, goods traded, wealth created, technology, shipbuilding, conflict and
conquest, piracy, rebellion and empire. The book is illustrated throughout with images from
the National Maritime Museum in London, which has an important but hitherto underresearched collection of objects relating to the Company, including fine art, objets d’art,
maps, charts, navigational instruments, ship models and weapons.Together with expert
texts by three leading historians in the field, these combine to tell the story of the East
India Company’s encounter with the Indian Ocean and the effects this had on both Asian
and British societies, people and politics. Monsoon Traders is published to coincide with the
opening of a new permanent Asian gallery at the National Maritime Museum.

Discreet voices - at times barely whispered - that reach us from these scenes and invite us to connect up
after more than a century with these cities, seem to want to ask us urgently for an audience.
From Alinari, the world's oldest photographic firm founded 1852 in Florence, Italy, comes the
Homage series, a selection of titles tracing the cultural history of Naples, Rome,Venice and Florence.
Aided by an extensive collection of pictures carefully selected from the Alinari archives, these guides
capture the essence of each of these beguiling and unique cities, sketching their evolution over the
last century. A perfect gift for history aficionados or those keen to visit Italy, these titles allow
readers to transform themselves unexpectedly into living witnesses of the cities that were.

The reopening of the National Museum of China on the east side of Tian’anmen Square in
Beijing will be by far and away the most significant event in the museum world in 2011.The
interior of the original building, one of 10 famous architectural landmarks built in 1959 to
mark the 10th anniversary of the Revolution, has been completely redesigned. The famous
façade has been retained. The new museum will combine the original national collection of
the Museum of Chinese History with that of the Museum of the Chinese Revolution. It
therefore tells the entire history of Chinese civilisation, from Yuanmou man (1,700,000 years
old) through the overthrow of the last dynasty in 1911 to the Revolution of 1949 and then
the founding of the People’s Republic. The collection of historical objects is of the highest and
most comprehensive nature - giving a complete history of Chinese art and culture.

The Alhambra and the Generalife
The Naxi people is an ethnic minority native to south west China, whose culture in the 20th
century has become almost extinct. The Naxi developed not only their own language, but
also their own pictographic script, a rich mythology and their own religion complete with
diverse rituals. This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the unique art, culture and
religion of the Naxi through outstanding artefacts collected on his travels in 1939 by Quentin
Roosevelt, the grandson of the American president Theodore Roosevelt: funeral scroll
paintings of the Dongba, ceremonial banners and paintings (thangkas), painted ceremonial
wooden slats symbolising gods and spirits (k’o byus), pictographic script, ceremonial objects
such as musical instruments, crowns, swords and sceptres as well as a ceremonial altar.

The Alhambra, one of the most-visited places in Spain, was declared a Monument in 1870,
shortly after the enactment of Spain’s first Monuments Law. Long before that, however, it was
the subject of interest of all the travellers visiting the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula. In
1984 it was named a UNESCO World Heritage site, a well-deserved recognition of its
interesting historical, aesthetic and natural treasures. The Monumental Complex - which
comprises the area enclosed by its walls, the land where the Generalife is located, and the
large surrounding area where there are buildings as well as the remains of other constructions
historically associated with the Alhambra - is a unique place in the world. Not only does the
Monument never disappoint those who visit it, visitors take away with them the feeling of
needing to visit it again and again.

J. P. Losty
The American film director James Ivory’s collection comprises 99 Indian miniatures from the
Hindu courts of Rajasthan, the Hill States, South India and paintings made under East India
Company rule. The underlying theme of this collection is a fascination with India and an acute
observation of Indian life, both secular and religious, combined with a delight in some of the
peculiarities of human nature, as they were expressed on the Indian subcontinent and seen
through a highly refined and, as we now realise- ‘cinematic’ eye. The book is fully illustrated and

Strings of beads and amulets hang from rear-view mirrors, swaying as the driver negotiates
his taxi through Bangkok’s chaotic streets. Statuettes of Buddha glued to dashboards sit
patiently beside flower garlands and beribboned objects. Buddhist ritual patterns adorn the
ceilings, and photos of monks are everywhere. Dale Konstanz, artist, freelance designer,
illustrator, and academic has spent over three years documenting the interiors of Bangkok
taxis, photographing the iconography and asking what it means to the drivers. In this book
he recollects and ruminates about these mini-altars, photographs the myriad of talismans,
sacred objects and icons and documents the various explanations and beliefs of the
Bangkok cabby.

Femmes Fatales at the Opera
From Heracles to Alexander
Edited by Vittoria Crespi Morbio
The Legend of Macedon
John Train & Linda Kelly
For literary anthologists and animal lovers, here is a witty collection of writings on animals from
celebrated sources accompanied by illustrations from various international sources: watercolours,
etchings, and prints. The animals featured are the ones we meet most often: dogs, cats, horses,
farm animals, birds, wildlife, insects and water creatures.
John Train has written for The Wall Street Journal, Forbes and The Financial Times, and authored
more than twenty books. In addition he has written a number of amusing “little books” which
have proven to be perennially popular stocking fillers. He has received several appointments from
American Presidents of both political parties. Linda Kelly’s previous books include The Young
Romantics, Women of the French Revolution and Richard Brinsley Sheridan. She is a Fellow of the
Royal Society of Literature and of the Wordsworth Trust.
Angeliki Kottaridi et al.
The “belle dame sans merci”, the seductress who drives men
insane and slowly but surely to their ruin, is one of the myths of
modern culture, pervading literature, drama, figurative arts, and
cinema. In opera the “femme fatale” is an archetype
encompassing the magicians of antique phantasmagorias like
Carmen, Salome and the most representative of all, Lulu. A
painstaking study of the figures of the great singers, carried out
at the most famous opera theatres in the world, assembled in
this book with the most stunning pictures of the enchantresses
in music, who forever will outpour charm and poison, beauty
and perdition, over all those who are fated to love them.
Excavations in the late 1970s in the modern village of Vergina
revealed spectacular royal tombs; one identified as belonging to
Philip II and the others to members of Alexander the Great’s
family. Remarkably preserved, these burials take us on a journey
back from the time of Alexander (d.323 BC) through classical
and archaic times to the early years of the first millennium BC.
The finds do not simply tell us of the wealth and social status of
the deceased: they also reveal the ritual surrounding death. The
extraordinary discoveries will be shown for the first time at the
Ashmolean Museum.

Conceived by a misguided government seeking to quiet the fears
of an anxious public, the concept of the “Family Fallout Shelter”
was Cold War paranoia at its finest, a massive bit of “propaganda

absurd notion of “duck and cover.” Bomboozled lays bare the
buried truths of America’s family fallout shelter obsession.
Welcome back to the wonderful world of Simon Drew! A combination of artist and wordsmith,
Simon combines these talents with an inventive and idiosyncratic sense of humour in his range of
books, this being his twenty-seventh. Gifted with a quirky sense of fun and a lively imagination,
Simon Drew interprets conventional words and phrases, situations and circumstances in pictures
and prose, turning his attention this time to the alphabet.
Simon Drew lives in Dartmouth, England, with his wife, Caroline, and his dog, Rabbit. He works
mainly in pen and ink, making fiendishly inventive drawings of everyday objects, birds and animals
embellished with devious rhymes and word play. His work is widely acclaimed and exhibited, and
is already the subject of numerous books. Drew’s designs are also incorporated into a wide
variety of stationery and accessories ranging from cards and mugs to t-shirts and aprons.

In the Footsteps of Augustine Henry
The Modern Kitchen Garden
Seamus O'Brien
Design, Ideas and Practical Tips
Augustine Henry is one of the most famous of the pioneering plant
hunters to have travelled to China during the latter part of the 19th
century, playing a key role in establishing the basis for our present
knowledge of the Chinese flora. His account of the destruction of great
tracts of China's forests prompted later plant hunters like E. H. Wilson,
George Forrest, Frank Kingdon Ward and William Purdom to venture to
China in the name of plant exploration and introduction. In the
Footsteps of Augustine Henry tells the fascinating story of his life and
work and documents the expeditions undertaken by a dedicated team
of botanists and horticulturalists in the 1990s to revisit Henry's routes,
many of which were in danger of being flooded with the installation of
the Three Gorges Dam across the Yangtze River.

Over the past few years the kitchen garden has enjoyed a
remarkable renaissance as people everywhere rediscover the
rich, epicurean delights of fresh home-grown produce. Although
they may seem like a relatively new phenomenon, kitchen
gardens have been popular for centuries. A longstanding
tradition in France and England, potagers were an important
element of many country homes at the turn of the 20th
century. Today, the kitchen garden movement is continuously
gaining momentum. Smitten by the idea of beautiful, fragrant
garden spaces and an abundance of delectable produce,
experienced and amateur gardeners alike are digging up their
backyards to plant modern kitchen gardens. The Modern
Kitchen Garden shows you how to create such a garden, and eat
it, too. A visual celebration of this mouth-watering concept, the
book presents the history of kitchen gardens, sample garden

Gardens of Europe
After the success of Ikebana Today (9789058562081) and Contemporary Ikebana
(9789058562692), Ikebana Through the Seasons completes the trilogy dedicated to this
ancient art form. Ikebana Through the Seasons goes back to the very heart of Ikebana and
focusses on the diversity of the arrangements through the seasons. Spring, Summer,
Autumn and Winter give rise to a great variety of Ikebana expressions. This book illustrates
the essence of Ikebana: its seasonal diversity, the growth process of the plants and the
interaction between the arrangement and its natural surroundings. For the compilation of
this book and the selection of works, an international team of Ikebana specialists,
representing all major Ikebana schools, worked together to create an invaluable source of
inspiration, not only for Ikebana aficionados, but anyone with a passion for floral beauty.

Moniek vanden Berghe Photography by Kurt Dekeyzer
To define Moniek Vanden Berghe as nothing but a ‘floral artist’
would undermine her multifacted talent.Trained as a sculptor,
painter, ceramicist and graphic designer, Moniek found her true
passion in the ephemeral floral art. Renowned for her groundbreaking bridal designs, resulting in the highly appreciated
Flowers in Love series, this monograph shows Moniek from a
more personal perspective. Meticulously captured by
photographer Kurt Dekeyzer, this monograph is both an
authentic document and a beautiful art book of a highly
personal signature. Text in English, Dutch and French.
The Royal Delft Pottery is the leading producer of authentic Delft
Blue ornamental earthenware and acts and a centre of
knowledge for the production of ceramics. With over 140,000

tourist attractions of the Netherlands. Royal Delft and floral
designer Pim van den Akker join forces for this inspirational book
showcasing the timeless masterpieces of the Delft museum
collection, reinterpreted by Pim van den Akker. The unique floral
creations show a different side to the treasured Delft pieces and
emphasise their age-old beauty. Text in English and Dutch.

David Ragg
Yuko Takagi
Monograph
Monograph
David Ragg Photography by Phil Rowley
Yuko Takagi
David Ragg is a third generation florist; surrounded by flowers
from a very young age, he understands the simple beauty of
one of nature’s most wonderful creations. His philosophy and
view on floral design are uncomplicated. In 2000 David Ragg
became Interflora florist of the year, he was a competitor for
the UK in the Interflora World Cup and in the UK Europa Cup
and is a three-times Gold Medal Winner for Professional
Floristry at the Chelsea Flower show. He travels the globe
teaching and demonstrating his skills. This new monograph
showcases David’s range and creative talent.
Yuko Takagi’s refined floral creations once again demonstrate
how Japan rightly stands synonymous with elegance and
minimalism. The delicacy of Takagi’s works, arranged with
precision and care, showcase the same aesthetics as traditional
Ikebana. Takagi designs impeccable, timeless masterpieces
showing the flowers stripped down to their essence, humble
and frill free. International recognition came when Takagi won
several prestigious floral design contests. This monograph
collects these exceptional works and illustrates the vision of this
flag bearer of Japanese aesthetics.
