Composite and Bonded Structures Olympus Inspection Solution Ready for the Composite Era A Case Study in Improving Aircraft Inspections with Bond Testing Technology Ghislain Morais Olympus Scientific Solutions Americas Eddy Current Product Leader Overview of Composite NDI In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the use of composite materials and structures in the manufacturing of airplanes grew exponentially. Overview of Composite NDI This model shows that 1–5% of the structure of this McDonald Douglas plane is made of composite material. Overview of Composite NDI This model shows that 5–6% of a Boeing 767 is made of composite material. Overview of Composite NDI 10–20% of the structure of a Boeing 777 is made of composite material. Overview of Composite We can see the increased percentage of composite materials in the commercial aircraft industry over the last thirty-five years. 50% Composites 52% Composites 15% Titanium 14% Titanium 10% Steel 7% 20% Aluminum 20% Aluminum 5% 7% Miscellanies Miscellanies Steel 50+% 23% 10–20% 5–6% A310 B757 1980 B767 1985 B787 A350 A380 A318-321 1990 B777 1995 A340 A340-500/600 2000 2005 2010 2015 Overview of Composite NDI 50% or more of the structures of the Airbus A350, Boeing 787, and Bombardier C‐series are made of composite material. Olympus Composite Solution Olympus offers a complete solution for composite inspection using a conventional flaw detector. NEW CONVENTIONAL BONDMASTER 600 NEW CONVENTIONAL ULTRASOUND EPOCH 650 Olympus Composite Solution (Cont’d) Olympus also offers a complete solution for composite inspection with imagery BONDTESTING C-SCAN OMNISCAN MX PHASED ARRAY EPOCH 1000 PHASED ARRAY OMNISCAN MX2 PHASE ARRAY OMNISCAN SX BondMaster 600 solution BondMaster 600 Multimode Bond Tester • • • • • High signal quality Multiple modes Application presets Full-screen display New frequency tracking tool • Complete archiving and reporting solution • 15 languages available BondMaster 600 Disbonding Solution During bond testing inspections, the pitch-catch probe produces flexural plate waves and compression waves, and compares changes in the signal amplitude between the probe’s transmitter and receiver as it passes over the inspected part, detecting disbonds on both the near and far side. Pitch-catch probes RF mode SWEPT mode IMPULSE mode BondMaster 600 Delamination Solution Resonance probes are narrow bandwidth contact transducers, and the changes in probe crystal impedance is represented in the X-Y display of the BondMaster 600. Resonance probes Resonance mode BondMaster 600 Smaller Disbonds and Repair Identification Solution The improved mechanical impedance analysis (MIA) method offered by the BondMaster 600 enables easy identification of smaller disbonds and repaired areas through a simple phase analysis of the MIA signal in the X-Y view. MIA probes MIA mode Application-Specific Modes Simplified Interface The BondMaster 600 features a new Application Selection menu that contains instant, ready-to-use setups. One of the major assets of the BondMaster 600 is its unprecedented ease of use. Frequency Tracking Tool The BondMaster 600 Pitch-Catch Swept mode has a new “Spectrum” representation. This new view displays the live amplitude and phase of the signal compared to the frequency range. Two new frequency markers (called frequency tracking) allow you to observe the behavior of two specific frequencies. This new tool is ideal for developing procedures or new applications. OmniScan MXB Solution The Olympus bond testing OmniScan solution is a big step forward in the field of composite inspection. Now, easy-to-read C-scan imagery is possible using a portable instrument. This OmniScan solution is ideally suited for disbond detection in honeycomb composite, as well as equally accurate delamination detection. Designed for aerospace in-service inspection, this solution is also useful for analysis when disbonding is located near internal brackets or supports. • C-scan imagery • Can drive up to eight different frequencies at the same time • Dimensioning capabilities • Improved POD • Phase/Amplitude display mode OmniScan MXB Solution With the OmniScan MXB solution, large sections can be scanned, and the image obtained will give critical details of the condition of the internal structure. Eddy Current Array Inspection of Composite Eddy current can detect damage in the mesh inside composite. The same module is used for eddy current and bond testing. The SAA112-ENC probe cover: 112 mm (4.41 in.) large Eddy Current Array Inspection of Composite Heat damage caused by lightening strike on composite part Very fast scanning and high POD CONCLUSION Olympus is committed to going beyond the role of a basic product provider; we offer solutions that are tailored to specific applications and problems.
