MARIO AZEVEDO AFRICANA ESSAY CONTEST 2014-15 Academic Year Submission Deadline: March 20, 2015 Africana Studies Department is pleased to announce The 6th Annual Dr. Mario Azevedo Africana Essay Contest ELIGIBILITY The Dr. Mario Azevedo Africana Essay Contest is open to all registered students at UNC Charlotte during 2014-15 academic year. PRIZE 1st Place ($150.00 in value and a certificate) 2nd Place ($75.00 in value and a Certificate) ESSAY GUIDELINES 1. Essay should focus on any aspect of the Africana (African and/or African Diaspora, including AfricanAmerican) experience, past and present, i.e. art, education, history, literature, language, culture, politics, psychology, globalization, international affairs, business, law, and economic, social, and policy issues, etc. 2. All papers must be typed in Microsoft Word, using Times New Roman Font in a 12 font size, 8-10 pages in length (including references), double-spaced with one inch margins-left to right and-top to bottom. 3. Essays will be evaluated on the basis of originality, coherence, content, organization, documentation, and style. Papers that are only polemic or offer only personal opinions, without evidence of research/documentation and analytical reasoning, will not be considered. Deadline for Submission: March 20, 2015 Review: The essays will be reviewed by a committee of professors. Results: The results of the competition will be announced in mid-April. Submission Rules: Only electronic submission will be accepted. Submit the essay as email attachment to: africana_studies@uncc.edu. The electronic file must be in MSWord format and must be arranged as follows: 1. The first page must be a cover letter with the title of your essay, your name, department/major, mailing address, telephone number, email contact information, class status i.e., freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student, and name of your faculty advisor or sponsor, if any. 2. The second page of the essay must contain only the title of the essay. Please do not include your name on this page. 3.
