Local Company Wins Technology Industry Honors

Last week technology industry experts recognized that an
Alameda-based start-up company
is making the world a safer place.
“Liquidity,” which manufactures
water-purification products based
on a membrane technology, came
home from TechCrunch Disrupt in
New York with an impressive trophy and the $50,000 grand prize for
its “Naked Filter.”
The company’s prize-winning
entry is the result of more than 15
years of research and development
at Stony Brook University on the
north shore of Long Island and at
the company’s Marina Village headquarters.
Naked Filter is an electro-spun,
bacteria-retentive membrane that
serves as a portable water filtration
system. According to the company,
Naked Filter is the first product
to offer technology that creates
“naked water,” free of bacteria,
added chemicals and odor.
The company says that the filter “provides high-quality bacterial
filtration at flow rates not possible
in the past.” The filter acts like a
colander that physically removes
disease-causing bacteria like salmonella, E. coli, typhoid, and cholera. The filter also rids drinking
water of cryptosporidium, one of
the leading causes of waterborne
disease, and protozoan cysts such
as giardia. In doing so the filter
provides drinking water that meets
standards that the Environmental
Protection Agency has set for bacteria and cyst removal.
“Our vision is to provide convenient and effective consumer water
treatment products to the billion
people worldwide who currently
lack consistent access to safe
water,” said the company’s founder
and CEO Victor Hwang.
“Alameda is a great base for us
to change the world,” Hwang said.
“It’s a great community and has the
infrastructure we need. Over time,
we hope to grow our operations as
we reach more customers.”

homeless; and enjoyed going to San
Diego Padre games and San Diego
Symphony concerts. Joan was
known for her caring heart; sense
of humor; love of music and dancing; and outstanding Christmas
cookies. She was a great spouse,
mother, and friend, and will be
missed by all.
